This month we talk with a husband and wife team making educational, exciting, and beautiful comic books together. We also talk with a Polk County native living in LA, creating a true-crime podcast. Confection Candy Shop shares their views on the best spooky Halloween movies and what candy to eat while you watch them. We welcome back the Lakeland Public Library, they give their book recommendations for a good scare in October. We’ve added the calendar and the Tampa & Orlando Top Tens back in this month. We removed them for obvious reasons back in April. Please, before you go anywhere, call or check online to make sure it’s still happening. With the uncertain nature of our days, you never know if something has been canceled without much warning. Please #supportlocal whenever you can, there’s never been a more important time. Continue to tag your Facebook and Instagram posts with #lkldhaven and you might find it printed in the November issue. Show us what you love about living in Polk County! Read our Haven magazine as well as the current calendar of events at havenmagazinees.com. Thank you for picking us up & supporting LKLD, have a great month! WILL LAKELAND EXTEND MASK RULES AGAIN?
TERRACE HOTEL RETURNS TO LOCAL OWNERSHIP
LAKELAND CANCELS 40TH ANNUAL CHRISTMAS PARADE
MUTZ: CITY SHOULD EXPLORE POLICE BODY CAMERAS
BARS OWNERS GET CREATIVE, THEN ALLOWED TO REOPEN
Will we or won’t we still be wearing face coverings in public places after Oct. 5? That’s the day Lakeland’s mask rules end, unless they are extended by the City Commission into a fourth month. The majority supporting the mask rules shrunk from 5-2 to 4-3 when commissioners last voted in early September. At that time, Mayor Bill Mutz and at least one other commissioner mentioned a goal that they would like to see before voting to end masking: 14 consecutive days of less than 5% of COVID-19 tests in Polk County coming back positive.
When a former city commissioner and her husband learned that the downtown Lakeland’s landmark Terrace Hotel was up for sale, they decided the 96-year-old institution should return to local ownership. Edie Yates and David Henderson head a five-member investment team that purchased the hotel for $7.25 million from Terrace Properties Partners Ltd., a company led by a Houston investment executive who grew up in Lakeland. The 10-story hotel will be managed by Naples Hotel Group and affiliate with the boutique-oriented Tapestry Collection by Hilton. Plans include enlarging the bar area and updating restrooms in all 88 guest rooms.
Two Lakeland holiday traditions are taking a year off: flocking to the Christmas Parade in early December and setting chairs up along the parade route in advance. The 40th running of the parade, which lines downtown streets with an estimated 30,000 viewers, has been canceled because of coronavirus concerns. The decision was made jointly by The Junior League of Greater Lakeland, which organizes the parade, and the city of Lakeland, which provides substantial support. Applications to participate in the parade were about one-tenth of their typical volume, city officials said in announcing the cancellation.
Lakeland’s mayor said he’s talked with many local residents about racial justice since last spring’s protests and prayer vigils, and two topics always come up: economic opportunity and body cameras for police officers. Because he’s heard a “universal” desire to equip Lakeland police with body cameras, Bill Mutz said, he’d like the City Commission to take a deep dive into the topic early next year. Police Chief Ruben Garcia and his predecessors have been reluctant to adopt body cameras because of the costs of maintaining thousands of hours of footage in order to comply with Florida’s public records laws.
Just as bar owners around Lakeland were figuring out ways to sidestep the state of Florida’s order that they stay closed as a coronavirus precaution, the state gave them the green light to open at 50% capacity. The state action came in mid-September after many bars had obtained licenses that allowed them to reopen as long as they sold food — in most cases, appetizers or quick-serve sandwiches. Still, local bar proprietors say they were treated unfairly. After being closed for nearly three months, they were allowed to open briefly before being shut down again. Meanwhile, restaurants were allowed to reopen at 50% capacity before bars were and didn’t get shut down again.

Tryp Air, a charter flight service that recently started service from Lakeland Linder International Airport will take you pretty much anywhere you want to go — but it will cost. Their focus is on trips to the Bahamas and the Southeastern U.S. The company’s TurboProp Pilatus PC12 will fly you and eight of your closest friends or business associates in luxury. Some of the rates shown on Tryp’s website include $4,100 to Freeport/Bimini; a trip to Key West or Tallahassee costs the same. if you hate the stress of driving on Interstate 4, a flight to Orlando is $2,505. That might seem pricey but when those amounts are divided by nine people they are much more reasonable, said Gene Conrad, Lakeland’s airport director.
Tony Delgado has ended his five-year run as Lakeland’s city manager, and his top deputy, Shawn Sherrouse, is running the show as interim manager while the City Commission decides who to hire to lead the city administration. Sherrouse, a 48-year-old Lakeland native, is one of 119 people who applied for the permanent position. By the time you read this, commissioners will have chosen their top half dozen or so candidates. They plan to interview them via video Oct. 5 and 7, narrow the field down to around 3, and then host the finalists in Lakeland for in-person chats Oct. 12 and 13.
After a spring and summer focused on the uncertainties of the coronavirus, Lakeland Regional Health had some uplifting news to report in September. First, it opened a 12-bed pediatric intensive care unit, which will allow the hospital to “care for virtually any child that becomes ill in our community, keep them here in Polk County” and avoid transfers to facilities in Tampa and Orlando, according to the hospital President Dr. Timothy J. Regan. Then the hospital announced it has reactivated plans for a 96-bed behavioral health center on the south end of its main campus.
Hospital companies in Tampa and Orlando are tiptoeing into the Lakeland market, in most cases making exploratory moves by opening small clinics or free-standing emergency rooms. Orlando Health is making a major move. The non-profit organization is planning to build a health-care campus on 80 acres off Lakeland Hills Boulevard just south of the Polk Parkway. Initial plans call for a free-standing ER and medical offices, but long-term plans include a hospital that will be built in stages — first 120 beds, and eventually 360 beds. City commissioners have approved Orlando Health’s request to annex the property and a general development plan.
Tracy McGrady, a Polk County native and seven-time National Basketball Association all-star, is putting his name, fame and financial backing behind a high-end sports bar that’s all but ready to open at Merchants Walk. However, Tracy McGrady’s HomeCourt won’t admit customers until February, its owners preferring to wait out the worst of the coronavirus. To develop it, McGrady partnered with California-based Salt Partners Group, known for its upscale San Francisco eateries. Amenities include a high-tech golf simulator and a 40seat oval bar topped with refurbished plans from a basketball court.

Hocus Pocus Comics There is magic on the pages and in the minds of Hocus Pocus creators Dwight and Rebecca MacPherson. The Lakeland couple met and fell in love through a comic book – now they make their own.
Rebecca MacPherson, originally from New York, was raised in Los Angeles. She has always had a deep appreciation for music, literature, film, and plays. “My earliest memories have always been of family and music playing in the background. My mom always had the radio on,” she said. Rebecca heard everything from The Beatles and Broadway tunes, to instrumentals and Led Zeppelin. “I had a really eclectic upbringing, and I knew I wanted to do either music, or I wanted to be on stage.” Her mom used to tell her that she would run around the house, acting things out, and writing plays. It wasn’t only the Top Ten radio tunes that influenced Rebecca. Her grandmother had all the classics in her library – Rebecca read them all. “The Wind in the Willows” and other classic literature were influential to her and continue to be. Clive Barker’s “Weaveworld” stoked her imagination to write, she said.
Creative Roots “I love literature; I’m a literature nerd first,” said Dwight MacPherson. “I love the way you can create a movie in a book.” Influenced by the work of Alan Moore and Chris Claremont, Dwight has been interested in comics since childhood. He remembers reading Moore’s “Swamp Thing Annual #1” and wanting to grow up to make comics. He used to draw as a child but soon turned to words. “I couldn’t draw fast enough to get what was on my mind on the paper, and it frustrated me,” he said. Dwight began writing in a stream of consciousness, growing discipline as he got older until he could plot out and complete stories.
With a background as an independent producer of TV, film, and theatre production for 20th Century Fox Studios and Tribune Studios, Rebecca has done everything from work in wardrobe at the Apollo Theatre and many impressive gigs during her seven years as a freelancer in LA. She worked on theatre productions, in PR, and as a personal assistant for Overbrook Entertainment to A-list actors, as well as an Assistant Director. “That was an amazing creative time for me,” she said. “That’s what I always wanted to do from a child, I wanted to be in the entertainment business, and I knew I wanted to be a part of that world that created the magic that I grew up seeing. […] I loved it; it just fed my imagination so much.”
In the tenth grade, he and a group of friends created and published a comic. They Xeroxed the pages and sold it at a local comic shop called Geppi’s Comic World in Clearwater. They printed one hundred copies and sold them all. “Steve Geppi is such a nice guy – he probably bought the one hundred copies,” Dwight said, grinning. Dwight was born in Michigan and moved to Lakeland at age nine, attending Dixieland Elementary. His family moved around Florida, with Dwight leaving the state for the military. He spent 14 years in the Army before being injured during active duty. He then moved with his sons to Tennessee to be near his parents.
Love at First Comic While working at Meltdown Comics on Sunset Boulevard, Rebecca noticed a striking pirate display, with one eyecatching book entitled “Dead Men Tell No Tales.” She bought the book and enjoyed it so much she reached out to its publisher to try and get in touch with the author, Dwight L. MacPherson. The two began corresponding online and over the phone, as Rebecca wished to option the rights to the comic. Bonding over shared interests, the two discussed
The Army sergeant would create the story that would later catch Rebecca’s eye while stationed in South Korea. He used his time to study historical records and research pirates like Captain Kidd, Bartholomew Roberts, and Blackbeard. “I wanted to create a timeline where I could put all three of these pirates together,” he said. Dwight wrote the comic book “Dead Men Tell No Tales” about the three pirates searching for the lost relics of Christ.

“The Twilight Zone,” “Star Trek,” literature, poetry, writing, and art. “I had to keep pinching myself,” Dwight said. “Over the course of a year, we knew we were meant for each other,” said Rebecca.
“What’s really cool about ‘The Imaginary Voyages of Edgar Allan Poe’ is I can also incorporate my love of mythology and epic stories,” said Dwight.
“That’s how we met – through a book,” said Rebecca with a smile.
For his part, Dwight is the President, Publisher, and Creator of Hocus Pocus Comics with Rebecca working as Vice President, Administration, and Managing Editor. The pair work together, joining their genius to create lively stories that anyone can enjoy – whether a comic book fan or not. “This is a marriage of art and literature. It’s a comic book, but it has themes that you can relate to as well,” said Rebecca.
They decided to meet at a comic book convention in Charlotte, North Carolina, called HeroesCon. They eventually got married, and Rebecca moved from LA to Tennessee with Dwight and his sons. After a few years, the family decided to move back to Lakeland. “That’s how we met – through a book,” said Rebecca with a smile.
From Mind to Page
Fueled by Imagination
“We do it the way we want to do it,” said Dwight. “We’re involved in the whole process from character sketches to penciled pages, to colors, lettering, production, and design of the book itself.” Rebecca added, “We get to take our time with it. […] We’re willing to do one book a year, maybe two, to really tell the story like we want to tell it, and have it look beautiful.”
In January of 2017, the MacPhersons launched a new venture – Hocus Pocus Comics. “We decided to do our own thing and tell our stories that we wanted to tell,” said Rebecca. When deciding on a moniker to be the essence of their creative brand, Dwight thought back to J.R.R. Tolkien’s “Lord of the Rings,” specifically, how Tolkien imagined the character Gandalf. “Gandalf doesn’t do magic – magic is part of his nature,” he said. “I’ve always been fascinated with magic in fantasy. Where does it come from? Where does the power come from? To me, imagination is powerful – that’s the source of magic, and so that is the way that I approach magic in my books. Imagination is what creates the magic.” After trying on a few names like Alakazam and Open Sesame, they landed on Hocus Pocus Comics.
When Dwight tells her an idea, Rebecca imagines it as a movie, “That’s how I see things, cinematically,” she said. Dwight and Rebecca use the magic that is their imaginations to develop the skeleton for a compelling story. The comic book creators say the storytelling sweet spot lies between not assuming your reader knows your ideas while also not spoon-feeding them information. The next step is to write it out as a screenplay with detailed direction, which isn’t too tough for the cinematically-minded Rebecca. “Writers are always looking, and we’re always thinking about people’s quirks,” she said. She noted a writer must convey the smallest details and mannerisms of a character, so the reader can imagine just how they might move their hair from their face or scratch their head.
Their eclectic catalog of books includes “The Imaginary Voyages of Edgar Allan Poe,” “Elevator,” “Houdini’s Silver Dollar Misfits,” “Terra Somnium,” “Vampire Squid Boy,” and an upcoming graphic novel, “The Key.” From the minds of the MacPhersons, you’ll find stories both timely and timeless. Dwight described them as “an amalgamation,” and indeed, they are. Many reference historical characters or take a page from a literary classic. In their debut comic, “The Imaginary Voyages of Edgar Allan Poe,” the MacPhersons explore the celebrated storyteller through a tale set in a fictionalized dream world complete with mythological gods and monsters, “created by his genius… and his madness!”
With a graphic novel, these details and directions are equally crucial for the artist. “The artist does not share your imagination,” Dwight said. “He can’t see the screens inside my head, so the more description I can give, the better.” The MacPhersons work with the artist, approving character sketches and panels of sequential art, then have it inked and colored before working with their production manager to send files to the printer. They publish Hocus Pocus Comics through Amazon. - CONTINUED ON PAGE 18 -

Inspiration Through Education
current college professor, set them up with the United States Department of English and Language’s Virtual Exchange Program. The MacPhersons do Flipgrid presentations and workshops on their books, which the department then sends to schools worldwide. “This is our legacy; this is what I’m leaving behind. When I’m long gone, you’ll see my videos, you’ll hear my voice – but you’ll see our words, which is more important to me,” said Rebecca.
Education has been a big piece of the MacPhersons’ focus. “I learned that reluctant readers are far more likely to read comics,” said Dwight. The MacPhersons have a son with autism who was reluctant to read. So, they gave him comic books. “He devoured them and went on to read the classics,” he said.
Before the current health crisis, the MacPhersons were preparing to offer in-person classes. On the advisory board for George Jenkins High School, Dwight will mentor students in English and Rebecca in TV and Film Production when safely able to do so.
Dwight admits he didn’t think about the union of comics and education until a book signing at Barnes and Noble. About 25 teachers came to have him sign their books – books they had been using in their classrooms. Feedback from the teachers lit a fire within the comic book writer. “I want to inspire the next generation,” he said. “I want to
Rebecca put it succinctly during a Department of Education Flipgrid presentation arranged by Smyth. “The future of education is through informative content combining pictures and art. Graphic novels are the embodiment of this concept, and we are excited to be on the forefront of this new wave of education!”
inspire the next generation,” he said.
MacPherson had the opportunity to speak with Special Education majors at Texas Tech University, who were enchanted with his book, “Houdini and the Silver Dollar Misfits.” “All the stars have disabilities, which you would think would be a disability but ends up being a strength,” he said of the book. “I’ve heard it called ‘Scooby-Doo meets the X-Men.’” They now use the graphic novel in their curriculum.
Coming up... Currently, Volume 1 of “The Imaginary Voyages of Edgar Allan Poe” is on sale, with Volume 2 set to be released in December. In the Spring, HP Comics will release Volume 3 and put them together as an Educators Package complete with study guides. These will be available either as physical copies or printable PDFs.
“Comics are being used on the collegiate level so much now and in classrooms as well. That’s where I wanted to infiltrate because the mainstream comic industry wants to make movies and TV shows – that’s their focus. My focus is on education. I want to get my books into classrooms so that they can inspire young readers,” Dwight said. Many Hocus Pocus Comics are based on historical fiction or literature. “Elevator,” for example, incorporates a modernized reimagining of Dante’s “Inferno.” The MacPhersons hope these books inspire children to become more involved in the subject. Dwight added, “Hopefully, it will inspire them to create on their own.”
Their newest project, currently being written, a graphic novel called “The Key,” will be released in the Fall of 2021. Rebecca described the book, whose main characters will be Lucas Hart and Lena Johnson, as “a mystery which touches on interracial issues so prevalent in today’s climate.” Hpcomics.net info.hpcomics@gmail.com FB @hocuspocuscomics IG @hp.comics TW @hpcomics_

Scarlet True Crime Podcast What is it that draws us to the macabre? What makes us peer in from the outside, at a distance, safely removed from events so terrible and tragic, bloody and grim? For the creator, producer, and co-host of the Scarlet True Crime Podcast Sonia Sutton Meza-Leon, it’s all about curiosity, with one question at the forefront – ‘Why?’ Born and raised in Lake Alfred, Sonia went to Auburndale High School, attended Polk Community College to spend time with their theatrical team, and began her career in the entertainment industry around age 18. She moved to Orlando to obtain a communications degree from UCF. Though she has since moved to the Golden State, Sutton Meza-Leon is fond of her hometown, saying, “The people there are lovely. There’s a downhome feel that I really miss, especially being in L.A., it’s a little more fast-paced.” Upon moving to Los Angeles in 1999, she worked in live-action television and film before moving into C.G. animation in 2003. Sutton Meza-Leon is now the Head of Post-Production in the entertainment division for one of the top five toy companies globally, producing popular brands including Barbie and Hot Wheels.
TRUE CRIME CURIOSITY An event in her childhood significantly impacted her intrigue with the true crime genre. Around 7 or 8 years old, a friend and classmate at Lake Alfred Elementary School was shot and killed by his father over Super Bowl weekend. “When you’re little, and it’s one of your friends… it’s really impactful,” said Sonia. “It was strange, and I didn’t understand it. I couldn’t understand how a father could do that, how anyone could do that, he was a little boy,” she said. “It was one of those things that stayed with me through my life, and I kept getting more and more interested in ‘Why?’” As her fascination progressed, she began to watch shows like “Unsolved Mysteries,” “Forensic Files,” and the like. She watched films centered around true crime like “In Cold Blood” based on Truman Capote’s novel of the same name. She watched Truman Capote’s one-man stage play “Tru” when it aired on “American Playhouse” on PBS in 1992, in which he talked about his writings, research, and first-hand experience with the perpetrators. “It was interesting to hear him talk about how close he came to them, how he started feeling empathy for them in ways he didn’t understand.” “Unfortunately, there’s just so much of it to talk about,” she said of the genre. Though crime is much more widely publicized now, there was a time when criminals – serial killers specifically – ran rampant. “There was a time from the early 1900’s all the way into the ’70s where serial killers were… it was unbelievable how many of them there were and how they were undetected.”

SCARLET ON THE CASE Quite a juxtaposition from her day job’s kid-friendly content, Sonia started a true-crime podcast early this year with co-host Brittney Sherman. The podcast aims to examine crimes, their perpetrators, and the aftermath with opinions from the cohosts. The ‘Why’ is especially important to Sutton Meza-Leon, a psychology major. “What drives people [to commit crimes] and what motivates them is really interesting to me.” For their namesake and mascot, Scarlet, Sutton Meza-Leon said, “We mythicized a character that would be named Scarlet, and it was the embodiment of a strong woman, an investigative woman who could – no matter what period of time – live in a man’s world and be successful and carve that area out for her.” Like the fictional Scarlet, Sutton Meza-Leon and Sherman are strong, investigative women in their own right. Their perspectives and experiences as women in the entertainment industry add a unique element to their podcast style. The co-hosts have several show formats, including deep-dives into the crimes and cases of serial killers from Charles Manson and The Family and the BTK Killer to Ed Kemper and H.H. Holmes. The ladies break from the in-depth morbidity of those episodes with their Top 3s format, which includes shows like “Top 3s: Unsolved Mysteries” and “Top 3s: Movies Adapted from True Crime Novels.” Their distinct perspectives as women in entertainment shine through in the Scarlet TCP Companion Episodes. They watch and discuss episodes, series, or films about a crime and examine the content itself, including the offense, perpetrator, and victims’ portrayal. “It’s an interesting look that I don’t see others doing. We really enjoy content; that’s our business. [...] We break it down like we are working on it. It’s an interesting take that you probably won’t find in other places,” she said.
STICKING TO THE FACTS Though the podcast style is conversational, the co-hosts do in-depth research to prepare for each episode, producing fact-based content with their thoughts and opinions sprinkled throughout. “We try to absorb every bit of content out there about the subject matter, including books, documentaries, current series, whether they’re narrative or not. We also talk to individuals who either have been in a similar situation and have had that kind of crime affect them or to the individuals involved,” Sonia said. They spend at least two weeks assessing the events of a case discussing its timeline, evidence, parties involved, proceedings, and early-life factors that could have contributed to what made the perpetrator commit their crimes. Sonia noted the importance of sticking to the facts when talking about true crime out of respect for the crime and victims impacted, making clear that they do not glamourize it in any way.
20
“We’re trying to understand and help others understand why this happens, how it happens, and how someone could do something like this and maybe actually get ahead of it. […] At the end of the day, we all realize that it is a combination of nature and nurture that starts these individuals down the road where they apparently can’t come back from. They become reliant on their addictions, which ultimately are committing crimes, hurting people.” Sutton Meza-Leon will be coming to Winter Haven in the Spring to continue her research for upcoming episodes of the podcast’s “Florida Crimes” series. With one “Florida Man” or another in the headlines almost daily, the Scarlet co-hosts have plenty of madness and mayhem to cover in the Sunshine State. One upcoming episode will cover the Oba Chandler murders, according to Sonia. “I find the Florida crime interesting for a variety of reasons. I feel like there’s a little bit of home there when people talk about locations that I’m familiar with.” The first and second episodes of Scarlet explored the Caylee Anthony case. “It was interesting for me to talk about it. Because if you’re not familiar with the surroundings and how things work there and the environment, it changes the way you look at a crime. That crime still perplexes me on so many levels.”
VAMPIRES, AX MURDERS, AND DARK TOURISM Lock your doors, grab some Halloween candy, and settle in for your true-crime fix with the ladies of Scarlet TCP. ‘Tis the season for frights, and what better way to get into the spooky spirit than with Scarlet? Sonia Sutton Meza-Leon even has a few episode suggestions for your Halloween podcast playlist. One such ghoulish romp is titled “Elizabeth (Blood) Bathory.” According to Sutton Meza-Leon, Bathory was a prolific female serial killer whose proclivities to bathe in her victims’ blood fueled rumors of vampirism. Another October must-listen is the two-part episode “Lizzie Borden’s 40 Whacks” about the ax murders of Andrew and Abby Borden in their home. Andrew’s daughter Lizzie was tried and later acquitted of the brutal slayings leaving the case unsolved. “The other episode that I love for Halloween is Dark Tourism,” said Sonia. “That’s where we talk about the nature of dark tourism and people who pay to go on vacations to visit these macabre locations – which we are of course obsessed with as well. The whole idea of dark tourism for us is fascinating.” Scarlet True Crime Podcast www.scarlet.captivate.fm Email: scarletmurderpodcast@gmail.com IG @scarlet.tcp FB @scarlettcp Twitter @scarletpodcast Available on all podcast platforms, including: Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Pandora, Amazon, Stitcher, iHeart Radio, and more.

CINEMA SCARES & SWEETS “SCOOBY-DOO AND THE GHOUL SCHOOL” (1988) NR “SCOOBY-DOO ON ZOMBIE ISLAND” (1998) RATED G I don’t let a Halloween season pass by without revisiting these childhood favorites. Enjoying gummy eyeballs, spiders, bats & a round of pumpkin soda while watching these movies is the perfect way to recapture a childhood Halloween.
UNIVERSAL MONSTER FILMS These films start it all for me. They never cease to provide comfort and inspiration every time I put any one of them on. If you visit Confection during the month of October you are likely to walk in on the Wolfman in mid-transformation or the Invisible Man delighting in the chaos he has created. In addition to Halloween candy, I’m really excited to be carrying licensed collectibles from Universal Monster and Super7. If you are interested in a spooky treat that has no expiration date, we will have a selection of blind boxes, ReAction figures, and monster trick or treat buckets all featuring the monsters that we celebrate every Halloween.
“THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE” (1974) RATED R If you went trick or treating in the neighborhood that I grew up in, you might remember hearing the sounds of a chainsaw on Halloween night. Every Halloween one of our neighbors would walk around in his yard ripping his chainsaw to frighten (in my case, delight) the people out harvesting candy. If I close my eyes, I can still hear it. I can almost feel how excited that sound made me, it meant that it was Halloween and a bucket full of candy would soon be mine. I begged and begged my parents to let me watch “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” but they did not give in until I was much older. Like I always knew it would... it became a cherished favorite. A box of Brown Butter Bourbon Caramels from Fruition Chocolate or a Brown Butter Nibs & Sea Salt chocolate bar from Dick Taylor would pair perfectly with this gritty classic.

HAMMER HORROR FILMS Hammer Horror Films & British candy… I can hardly think of a better night in. Hammer made 50 films that fall into the horror genre from the 50s to the early 70s staring a revolving cast of horror legends such as Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing, Oliver Reed & Michael Ripper. They are fun & colorful, nearly all of them featuring a bright candy apple colored stage blood affectionately dubbed, “Kensington Gore.” If you like period drama but want something a little spookier to celebrate the season, there is a Hammer film for you. Want to spend some time with Dr. Frankenstein and his monster? Check out “The Curse of Frankenstein” (1957). For werewolves, watch “The Curse of the Werewolf” (1961). Some of my personal favorites are deeper cuts like “Dr. Jekyll & Sister Hyde” (1971) Rated PG or “Night Creatures” (1962). Night Creatures is based on the same material as Disney’s “The Scarecrow Of Romney Marsh” and is another favorite of mine. Now for the candy... importing candy from the U.K was a goal for the store from the start. This year that dream finally came true and I am proud to stock a small but growing selection. Watch these films with a little tray of imported sweets. I think some Jelly Babies, Smarties, Bounty bar, and maybe a few Cadbury Curly Wurly bars would be absolutely lovely.
“CANDYMAN” (1992) RATED R “Candyman” (1992) Rated R, explores the legend and its sociological repercussions of the ghost of an artist and son of a slave who was murdered in the late 19th century. Based on the short story “The Forbidden” in the collection “Books of Blood Volume 5” by Clive Barker, this film is important for more reasons than the obvious love I have for the title. The score by Philip Glass is the perfect accompaniment to the performance Tony Todd gives as one of the most frightening and still very relevant horror icons of all time. If you enjoy this then make sure to check out its direct sequel when it debuts in theaters later this year. Directed by Nia DaCosta and written by Jordan Peele, Win Rosenfeld and DaCosta. This film is sure to be a fitting follow up. Bees play a major role in Candyman, so I think Halloween’s most divisive confections are the obvious choice. Candy corn! One of the main flavors in candy corn is honey. My vote for the best candy corn on the market is made by jelly belly though I’ve got a soft spot every brand & variety!
DRACULA FILMS
GODZILLA FILMS
Dracula never drinks wine but he is very quick to offer a glass of red to his guests and red pairs wonderfully with a good dark chocolate bar. Check out our 72% dark chocolate bar using only cocoa beans from Madagascar from Mirzam Chocolate Makers. I’ve never met a Dracula Film I didn’t like, but I’ve got a few favorites beginning with “Dracula” (1931). Universal’s first Dracula film is perfection. Notice the absence of a horror score and the way it builds eerie silences. The second closest Dracula to my heart is Christopher Lee in the seven films he made for Hammer. My favorite is “Taste the Blood Of Dracula” (1970) Rated R. “Blacula” (1972) Rated PG & “Bram Stoker’s Dracula” (1992) Rated R, are must-see films when planning a night in with the count as well. If you are planning a vampire-themed night for the younger ghouls, I think a pair of wax fangs & a showing of “Hotel Transylvania” (2012) Rated RG would make the count very proud.
If you’ve been to Confection recently, the chances that either myself or my second Candyman in command Ella were watching a Godzilla film. We have bonded over our mutual love of Kaiju (a Japanese genre of films featuring giant monsters) and we just can’t get enough. Ella’s favorite is “Godzilla Vs Mothra” (1992) and mine is Invasion of Astro-Monster (1965). Japanese monsters call for a mountain of Japanese candy! Grab a few rolls of Hi-Chew, Kasugai gummies, Meiji Chocorooms, and revel in the battles fought by the most famous monster in Japan.

“PRACTICAL MAGIC” (1998) RATED PG-13
“THE TWILIGHT ZONE” My love for “The Twilight Zone” goes further than it being just my favorite television show as it’s kind of a guiding force in my life. Episodes of “The Twilight Zone” are varied in theme, tone, and content. At their best, they tell stories that make us look at ourselves and the world we live in with a perspective that calls for empathy. If there is one thing I think we need even more than candy and that is empathy. The good news is, you can have both. The most enduring image from the “Twilight Zone” has got to be Rod Serling giving his episode introduction while smoking a cigarette. Substitute that real smoke for a candy cigarette and enjoy some of the most popular candy from the era that saw, what I believe to be, the greatest television show of all time. Grab a roll of Necco Wafers, Nik-L-Nips wax bottles, Turkish Taffy, and a handful of Zots & get lost in the fifth dimension. A few of my favorite episodes are “The Lonely,” “What you need,” “The Big Tall Wish,” “It’s a Good Life,” “To Serve Man,” “Jess Belle,” “Steel,” “The Long Morrow” and “Come Wander with Me.” Don’t hesitate to mention the episodes you love best when you come in to get candy! I could never get tired of talking about “The Twilight Zone.”

“Practical Magic” is an absolutely gorgeous film about love & sisterhood as well as a beautiful representation of modern-day witchcraft. Making margaritas at midnight is a tradition for the family in this film and it’s always seemed like such fun. Even if you throw this on before twelve o’clock, make a batch of margaritas and enjoy a few sweets from our selection of Mexican candy. Candy from Mexico often mixes salty, sweet, sour, and spicy flavors together to create confectionary delights that are pure magic.

Frightening Florida FLORIDA MAN MAKES A MUMMY The story of German-born Carl Tanzler, also known as Count Carl von Cosel, brings new meaning to the phrase ‘undying love.’ As it would turn out, Carl had more than a few skeletons in his closet – one of whom he liked to dress up and spin around the dance floor.
He lived with Elena’s corpse for several years, buying her gifts and dancing with the dead woman. To combat the increasing decay, Carl-the-corpse-lover “used everything from wire hangers to prop her up to rags to stuff the empty cavities of her body.” The doting grave robber saw to her eternal beauty by using what hair she had left to make a wig, applying wax to her face, and using disinfectants to combat the smell.
Upon abandoning his wife and children, the radiologist made his way to Key West in 1926. According to historydaily.org, “Once in Florida, he presented himself as a count and claimed to be a former submarine captain who moonlighted as an inventor.” Von Cosel also claimed to have nine university degrees, according to Atlas Obscura.
Murmurings of Count von Cosel buying women’s clothing began to circulate, and he was spotted through a window dancing with what looked to be a life-sized doll. Upon confronting Tanzler at his apartment in 1940, Elena’s sister called the authorities to the horrifying discovery. More disturbing details regarding the treatment of Elena’s corpse emerged during the investigation.
The ‘count’ met 21-year-old patient Maria Elena Milagro de Hoyos while working as a radiologist at the United States Marine Hospital. Elena became a point of obsession for Tanzler as he had what he believed to be prophetic dreams of a raven-haired beauty joining him in life in love. He went to great lengths to save Elena from succumbing to her tuberculosis diagnosis, including “tonics, elixirs, and pilfered x-ray equipment that he brought to her home.” The good doc made his love clear to the ill Elena though she did not share his romantic feelings.
He was arrested and tried for “wantonly and maliciously destroying a grave and removing a body without authorization.” During the proceedings, he admitted his plans to use an airship to take his lost love, “high into the stratosphere, so that radiation from outer space could penetrate Elena’s tissues and restore life to her somnolent form.” Whatever that means.
Complications from tuberculosis claimed Elena’s life on October 25, 1931. Creepy Carl paid for her funeral and internment in a stone mausoleum – “a building to which only he had a key.”
Due to the statute of limitations, the ‘count’ was cleared of his crimes. In a final ghoulish act, Tanzler requested Elena’s body back at the end of the trial. The request was denied. Disturbingly, the state of Florida displayed Elena’s mummified body at a local funeral home for viewing until she was eventually laid to rest in an unmarked grave.
Suspiciously, two years after her death, Tanzler stopped visiting the grave of his dark-haired dream girl, something he had done every night. He may not have been visiting her mausoleum, but the two were getting plenty of quality time together. The stuff of horror films, Tanzler transported her corpse with a toy wagon to an airplane he had converted into a makeshift lab. In this airplane of atrocities, Tanzler mummified her body using wires, mortician’s wax, and glass eyes.

I’M SORRY, ROBERT Apology letters routinely arrive at the Fort East Martello Museum in Key West – all of them addressed to one Robert the Doll. The 111-year old doll is well-worn, donning a sailor suit and cap, holding a stuffed puppy of his own, looking at patrons through the museum glass with eyes as dark as the deepest recesses of Hell. That’s right, Robert the Doll is – you guessed it – HaUnTeD! This little demonic cutie can be traced back to toy maker, the Steiff Company, credited with being the first to manufacture the Teddy Bear.
face, sounds of giggling and footsteps, lights flickering, and Robert moving around on his own. Robert the Doll was donated to the museum in 1994. Robert’s reign of terror continues. Museum patrons are encouraged to introduce themselves to Robert and ask his permission before snapping a photo. And don’t dare leave without saying goodbye. Those who find themselves on Robert’s bad side report temporary camera malfunction and repercussions after leaving the museum from a string of bad luck to divorce and even injury.
Before his residency at the museum, Robert belonged to a little boy of the same name, Robert Eugene Otto. As legend would have it, Otto began to blame strange and terrifying happenings on the doll. Otto kept him into adulthood, even placing him in an upstairs window at his home. According to Atlas Obscura, “Schoolchildren swore that he would appear and reappear, and they avoided the house.”

PUBLIC SCHOOL NUMBER 4 A condemned building in more ways than one, the former Annie Lytle Elementary School, also known as Public School Number Four in Jacksonville, looms on the side of I-95. Time has transformed its white pillars from a grand entryway, welcoming children to learn reading, writing, and arithmetic, into the fangs of some dark entity waiting to consume any who dare get too close. The school’s history is marred with alleged blood-shed and specters so terrifying it’s earned the moniker the “Devil’s School.” According to author Charlie Carlson, in his book “Weird Florida,” one such story takes place in the 1960s, “when a furnace exploded killing half the students, a few faculty members, and the janitor.” Restless spirits from that accident were said to haunt the school to the point that teachers refused to work, and a priest was called in to exorcise any evil within its walls. Pupils who needed reprimanding were sent to the principal’s office, never to be seen again. Ghosts from a janitor-led massacre are said to roam the halls of the abandoned building. Because of its gory history and abandonment, Public School Number 4 became a prime spot for devil worship. I’ve got to be honest that none of those stories can be confirmed – but they also can’t NOT be confirmed… so... Source: Weird Florida, Charlie Carlson, pg. 227

Curry Mango Have you eaten at Lakeland’s favorite new restaurant, Curry Mango? This South Lakeland spot offers traditional Indian fare alongside unique American and Indian fusions. You might say their food is like naan other in Polk County. Curry Mango owner, Anthony Mankidiyan, started working towards a degree in Restaurant Management at the age of 17. Three years later, he moved from India to the United States to work in the restaurant industry. He opened small stores and offered catering, but always looked to start something more significant. He worked with California-based partner Salim Mathew to get the Curry Mango concept off the ground with doors opening on December 21, 2019. His passion for food came much earlier in life. Mankidiyan was influenced by his father, a former cook, catering for large events. He can remember being 12 years old, helping his father peel vegetables for large parties, and knew he wanted to be in the industry when he grew up. One thing he remembers making with his father is a traditional Indian dish called Dosa. The rice and lentil crepe is made with mashed potatoes inside along with lentil soup and coconut chutney. “You need to be very skilled to make that,” he said. His father, now 83, lives with Mankidiyan, who is married with three children of his own. Asked how his dad felt about his son following in his culinary footsteps, Mankidiyan said, “He’s proud of me, he’s very proud.”
A DIFFERENT CONCEPT “I wanted to introduce Indian food to everyone in Lakeland,” said Mankidiyan. He also sought to brighten up the bore and gloom of many fine-dining establishments with more of an upscale, casual semi-sports bar feel. “I want to do something different – I don’t want to do the same things everybody does,” he said. A unique way in which Mankidiyan is carving a restaurateur path in Lakeland is with his outstanding food. Merging American and Indian flavors, Curry Mango has offerings you can’t get anywhere else. Wing flavors, including tandoori, mango chutney, hot garlic, and tamarind, speak to Mankidiyan’s different ways of approaching cuisine. Do yourself a favor and try the tandoori wings. These generously sized wings are a bright orange, red – a visual hint to the excitement awaiting you. Guests who aren’t quite as spice tolerant can choose milder flavors. “We customize mild food without losing any flavors. We don’t compromise on the authenticity of the flavor, but people can enjoy it,” he said. Mankidiyan said Curry Mango has customers who have worked their way up from mild food to indulging in dishes with more heat. Just as it takes a while to form a habit, he said, your taste buds also have to adjust to a different spice level. The restaurant’s signature dish and namesake, Curry Mango Chicken Curry (which can also be prepared with lamb curry), is the perfect beginner dish for those who aren’t familiar with - CONTINUED ON PAGE 31 -

Indian cuisine. Describing it as light and sweet, Mankidiyan said, “It’s very flavorful. We make it out of fresh mango.” And flavorful it is. There is comforting warmth to the dish, brightened up by the sweetness of mango. Try it with their piping hot buttery garlic naan – it’ll be the best decision you’ll make all day. Many of their dishes, including their naan bread and lamb chops, are cooked in a traditional clay oven. Fried versions of their Americanized Indian flavors are also available. The owner describes the Curry Mango Chicken Tenders as similar to KFC but with Indian spices. Mankidiyan knows his way around a tasty piece of fried chicken. He has two gas stations, out of which he serves fried chicken. Truck drivers who have eaten around the country would tell Mankidiyan that his chicken was the best they’d ever eaten, and some people even asked him to open it as a fried chicken franchise. Now Lakelanders can get those same inspired flavors and then some at Curry Mango. A version of this cultural cuisine blend is the Curry Mango Fried Shrimp. They have the distinctive crunch of American fried shrimp married to the toothsome flavors of India. Wash down your butter chicken, vindaloo, or chicken tikka masala with a special drink or cocktail from the bar. They offer traditional Indian drinks like the nonalcoholic Indian Iced Tea or Mango Lassi made from fresh mango pulp, yogurt, and sugar. Curry Mango’s signature cocktail is an ode to the dreamy skies of the Swan City. Called the Lakeland Sunset, the cocktail is a delicious mix of vodka, triple sec, grenadine, and sour mix.
THANKING THE COMMUNITY The quarantine was a challenge for Curry Mango only a few months into business. Lakeland so loved their food that they continued to show up and support the new restaurant. “I have to thank the community,” he said. “They have helped us with this pandemic.” In all that time, he didn’t have to close the restaurant or lay off a single employee. “I was paying them, all four months,” he said. “I let nobody go.” “I appreciate that the community here, the Lakeland community, has helped us,” said Mankidiyan. “Florida’s Ghostly Legends and Haunted Folklore, V. 2. North Florida and St. Augustine” By Greg Jenkins
There are plenty of haunts in northern Florida and you’ll find them in abandoned hospitals, ancient springs, and modern apartment complexes from Ocala to Jacksonville, from Lake City to Tallahassee.
“Florida’s Ghostly Legends and Haunted Folklore, V. 3: The Gulf Coast and Pensacola”
by Greg Jenkins
From the ancient to the modern, uncanny legends and eerie folklore abound about Florida’s beautiful west coast, from Pensacola to Naples, from Cedar Key and all along the West Coast.
“The War of the Worlds” by H.G. Wells
Originally published in 1898, this tale of Martian invaders attacking Earth is one of the most influential and popular science fiction books ever written. Presented as a gripping first-hand account, the book taps into universal fears of invasion and assimilation. Each new adaptation (most recently a BBC mini-series) proves that the book’s themes remain as fresh and relevant as they were at the turn of the 20th century.

“Lovecraft Country” by Matt Ruff
“Lovecraft Country” will blow you away with its reimagining of H.P. Lovecraft’s work. These interconnected stories see our characters navigate two very different horrors: unexplained supernatural beings and 1950s Jim Crow America.
“The Corpse Had a Familiar Face” by Edna Buchanan
For eighteen years, Pulitzer Prize-winner Edna Buchanan had one of the most exciting, frightening, and heartbreaking jobs a newspaperwoman could have -- working the police beat for the Miami Herald. “The Corpse Had a Familiar Face” offers her savvy and gritty view of Miami’s cold-blooded murders, violence of passion, and everyday insanity.
“Never Let Them See You Cry” by Edna Buchanan
“Never Let Them See You Cry” is another Buchanan streetsmart exposé of the 80’s Miami crime scene of murdered millionaires, preschool witnesses, walking corpses, and wandering fowl.
“Through the Woods” by Emily Carrol
This one is for those of us who grew up on Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. Starkly drawn and richly colored, this graphic novel presents the reader with five chilling tales of terror. From parasitical possessions to the wolf waiting in the woods, this collection is a dark delight for older teens and adults.
“The Spider and the Fly” by Mary Howitt (Ages 6+)
This classic poem, and cautionary tale, about a smooth-talking spider and a vain fly is made delightfully darker by the dramatic illustrations of Tony DiTerlizzi. In a nod to the silent film era, he pairs black and white illustrations with Mary Howitt’s text to create an eerie visual feast. Leave the lights on and cuddle up as the opening line asks “Will you walk into my parlour?”
“Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark” by Alvin Schwartz (Ages 10+)
Long before the Goosebumps series was a thing, these were the books that kept children awake at night. As if the stories weren’t scary enough, the illustrations sent shivers down your spine. Hotly debated and frequently banned due to the macabre content, this collection of short horror stories has both excited and terrified children for decades.
“Creepy Carrots”
by Aaron Reynolds (Ages 4-8) Is Jasper Rabbit seeing things, or are creepy versions of his favorite food haunting him everywhere he goes? With a touch of color and a lot of emotion, this book is just the right amount of spook for younger readers. 100 Lake Morton Drive Lakeland, FL 33801 (863) 834-4280

WORDS Lisbeth Pacheco Ethos Coffee Roasters www.ethosroasters.com
Deliciously Spooky About 1,400 years ago, in an Ethiopian highland named Kaffa, a goat herder named Kaldi noticed something strange in his goats one fateful evening. His usually calm goats were jumping around and bleating loudly, and refused to go to sleep. This was highly unusual, so Kaldi decided to investigate - he took them back to the same field the next day, but this time stayed close to carefully watch them. He saw them flocking to a group of shrubs with round red fruits… and watched them enthusiastically devour them. He decided to try these enticing fruits himself and was delighted as he began to also feel its energizing effects.
monks disagreed with her, and labeled these fruits as “the devil’s work,” tossing them into the fire. Yet, the delicious aroma that filled the room from the roasting berries (and its seeds!) captured their attention. They removed the remainders from the fire, placed them in a vessel, and added water to extinguish the dying embers. This was the very first cup of freshly brewed ‘black magic,’ whose aroma was so intoxicating, it attracted even more monks. The bravest among them dared to drink it, and once they experienced its energizing effects, realized they had just experienced a miracle - a drink that could keep all monks awake during their prayers!
Excited about his discovery, he filled his pockets with as many fruits as he could carry, and took them home to his wife. She tried them and thought the berries were “a gift from God,” and told him he should show them to the monks in the Abyssinian monastery nearby. Unfortunately, the

Fourteen centuries later, we continue this great tradition of brewing a small miracle in a cup every day - we call it “coffee.”

Join us every Saturday morning to celebrate a healthy and connected community event that supports local businesses. The Winter Haven Farmers Market features a variety of locally-grown food, artisan food vendors, plants, makers & food trucks. The market is located in the BB&T Bank lot on the NE corner of 3rd St and Ave C SW across from Grove Roots in downtown Winter Haven. We have made a few changes in response to COVID. We require our vendors to wear masks and we encourage our guests to do the same. Hand sanitizing stations are set up, please remember to social distance yourself from others. Interested vendors may apply online.

Asthma and COVID-19 People with asthma and other chronic respiratory diseases are at greater risk for severe complications – including life-threatening pneumonia or bronchitis – if diagnosed with COVID-19 (also called coronavirus).
What you need to do… Protection • Take your daily asthma controller medications as prescribed • Check to see if your prescriptions are up to date and not expired • Keep an emergency supply of prescription and OTC medications, including asthma inhalers (but do not hoard medications) • Follow your Asthma Action Plan • Know how to correctly use your inhaler – discuss with your allergist if you don’t • Use a nebulizer in a place where any droplets in air cannot be inhaled by others. • Avoid your asthma triggers • Monitor breathing with a peak flow meter and take note of any changes • Help yourself cope with stress and anxiety – consider stress-relieving activities (exercise, yoga, etc.)
Prevention • Wash your hands regularly using soap and water • Avoid touching your face
6’
• Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces • Practice social distancing (at least 6 feet)
Be sure to check on your loved ones with asthma – especially senior citizens – to make sure they are well.
