Letter From the Editor

Here’s to a Happy, Healthy New Year!

ON THE COVER: Mural by Gillian Fazio on the corner of Stuart Ave and Scenic Hwy in Lake Wales. Painted in 2020.

Happy New Year! We begin this year with a curated list of 50 interesting things to do in Polk County in 2021. We’ve even included a checklist at the end, so you can mark them off as you go. We also talk with a high school senior who was born in Latvia and is now thriving in Winter Haven. Learn how she made that journey and overcame so many obstacles. She’s a pretty amazing young woman. As we begin this new year, I challenge you to think about what you’re grateful for. Is it a person? I challenge you to TELL them. We could all use more kindness, be the person who spreads it. I found the poem below and wanted to share it. I can so easily fall into a dark place and convince myself that I’m doing everything wrong. I am my own worst enemy. I’m going to keep this next to my desk this year, so I can reflect back on it. I hope you find inspiration from it too. Thanks for picking us up every month & I hope to see you around town! Read our current magazine and past issues at havenmagazines.com. Keep tagging your posts with #kindachill and you might find it in the February issue!! By Katie Worthington Decker, President/CEO of the Greater Winter Haven Chamber of Commerce

This picture reminds me of what a new year means – still waters ready for us to make waves in, in the most positive sense. And with that there is much to look forward to in the coming year. Your Greater Winter Haven Chamber of Commerce is a non-profit made up of over 740+ businesses ranging from one-person shops to our community's largest employers; all invested in advancing commerce and community in the greater Winter Haven area and in Polk County.

Dining Passport

In a normal year, the Winter Haven Chamber would be planning our in-person 2021 Taste of Winter Haven one-night dining extravaganza. But I think we can all agree that over 500 people in an indoor space in early 2021 would be a challenge. However, there is no more important time for us to drive traffic to our local restaurants, bars and caterers than now as they were some of the businesses most affected by pandemic mitigation regulations. That is why we are proud to present to you our 2021 Taste of Winter Haven "Eat Out to Help Out" Dining Passport. For just $50, you can receive a booklet filled with $10 off coupons to area restaurants, bars and caterers. Coupons will be good until December 31, 2021. The list of participating restaurants as of this publication is: Arabella's Ristorante Culver's Duke's Brewhouse Winter Haven Elite Catering Company Fire Eatery + Bar KFC Auburndale Mediterranean Fresh Grill

50 things to do in 2021 Let’s always remember and embrace the hardships, the lessons learned from last year while leaving its anxieties behind. We’ve gathered a list of 50 things to do this year – for yourself and others, some heart-pounding, some heartfelt – to perhaps find a semblance of normalcy. Let your happiness blossom and your worries wilt as you reacquaint yourself with the beautiful community we’re all a part of. This year and all that follow, remember that kindness to yourself and others can change the world, so there’s a bonus listing for you – #51: be kind. Whether you check off each box or only a few from our list, I hope 2021 brings you fulfillment, joy, creativity, and clarity in the process. Happy New Year! *When checking these off your list, be sure to wear a mask, social distance, and follow guidance from the CDC and local health officials. We want you to stay safe and keep others safe and healthy too!

shop a farmer’s market Familiar faces and fresh fruits and veggies – what could be better? Shopping at a farmer’s market is a great way to interact with the community’s vibrant businesses, farmers, and makers. Every Saturday from 9 am to 1 pm in the BB&T parking lot across from Grove Roots, the pet-friendly Winter Haven Farmers Market draws crowds to its collection of vendors who offer fresh vegetables, freshly-baked bread and pastries, jam, coffee, plants and more. The Lakeland Downtown Farmers Curb Market is another must-shop. Stroll Kentucky Ave. for produce, food vendors, kombucha, and other odds and ends every Saturday from 8 am to 2 pm (closed during the month of August).

find your perfect coffee spot

polk museum of art living wall

A cup of coffee is a convergence for friendships, business meetings, and ideas. Grab your laptop and get some work done or take a minute to sit and finish that book you’ve been meaning to read. Explore a few of the local coffeehouses, try them all out and settle on your ideal coffee spot, maybe even down to the perfect table. A few of our favorites are Black & Brew, Concord, Mitchell’s, Unfiltered, and Hillcrest. If you’re on the east side, check out Amonie Jo’s, N+1, and Richard’s! What’s your favorite place to sit and sip?

Polk Museum of Art consistently presents rich and interesting exhibits for patrons to experience – and admission is free. Breathing new life, quite literally, into the Polk Museum of Art’s outdoor sculpture courtyard is their Living Wall. If you haven’t been yet – go. A once blank wall now drips with lush shaggy greenery making for a tranquil piece of living art. Admire it, breathe it in, take a selfie.

flutter over to the auburndale rotary butterfly garden Take a peaceful outing to this butterfly garden featuring over 30 different types of Florida-Friendly plants (native and non-native). According to their website, “The plant selection has been designed to attract a wide range of Central Florida butterfly species to feed on the nectar of our flowering plants. There are also several species of flora that serve as host plants to particular butterflies. For example, Milkweed is the exclusive breeding ground for the popular Monarch Butterfly. Similarly, the Florida State Butterfly, the Zebra Longwing, uses Passion Flower to lay its eggs.”

unBEERlievable options Beer… beer as far as the eye can see. Cheers to the many fantastic breweries and taprooms around! Polk County has some heavy hitters when it comes to craft brews. take a culinary trip around the joinery

pints and pinball

This upscale Lakeland food hall gives us all the flavors and feels. Make it a priority to get to each of their vendors this year (we bet you’ll do it more than once). Bite into a sushi burrito from Ato, a Neapolitan wood-fired pizza from Ava, or a Mediterranean-inspired bowl from Plenty. Give in to a puffy taco or two from Gallito Taqueria and a scoop of Mayday’s handcrafted artisan ice cream. We know you’ll be raving about the ramen and Japanese street snacks from Sabu and the killer burgers from Super Duper Spot. Imbibe with a craft beer or cocktail from The Bar and your day is complete.

There’s nothing like spirits and skeeball to take your mind off things. But where can you drink AND play fun games? The Rec Room and Galaxy Bar, of course. The Rec Room is a bar boasting video games, arcades, and other recreational pastimes. Shoot some hoops, tee up at their golf simulator, or play a round of tipsy skeeball. Another stellar stop is Galaxy Bar, a blast from the past retro arcade bar. Galaxy Bar has it all – cocktails, tunes, pinball, and over 25 classic arcade games.

go skydiving Ah yes, the old proverb: “If at first you don’t succeed, skydiving is not for you.” But that’s not the right ‘altitude’ to have! At Jump Florida Skydiving in Lake Wales, you can take a tandem leap from an airplane from 11,000 to 18,000 feet in the air. Take the plunge and opt for photos and video to commemorate your adrenaline-inducing dive.

get thrifty Thrifting is kind of like mystery shopping. You don’t have to have an idea of what you want, to come out of the store with something special. Shop for a stylish outfit, funky furniture, or odds and ends that speak to you. Stop in a local Goodwill, Salvation Army, or Habitat ReStore for some treasures. Also, check out Saint Matthews Thrift Shop, St. John’s Thrift Store for Missions in Winter Haven, and Peace River Center Thrift Shoppe in Lakeland, and Top Buttons in Winter Haven, Lakeland, and Bartow.

donate Consider donating to a local nonprofit like Polk Pride, food pantries or the SPCA if you have a little extra to give. Provide opportunities for local youth by making a monetary donation to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Polk County or Girls Inc., or drop off supplies to pet shelters, Talbot House Ministries, Women’s Resource Center, or kidsPACK to name a few.

go antiquing

coffee + axes

Antique stores abound in Central Florida. Find that perfect retro couch or funky knickknack for your bookshelf at one of the too-many-to-name antique stores around the county. Try out Treasure House Antiques or Central Avenue Antiques in Winter Haven or Dixieland Relics and Lakeland Antique Mall on the west side. Find something old or something new at The Barn Antiques in Lake Alfred. The Barn opened in 1969 and is open seasonally from October through May. The Stable Gifts & Crafts, The Back Yard Garden Shop, and The Back Porch Tearoom are open yearround. Shop until you drop and then have lunch at The Back Porch.

Give boredom the axe at Ax-Caliber Axe Venue and Coffee House. Picture this: you drink a cup of coffee; you’re freakin’ jacked on caffeine. Next, someone gives you an axe and it’s all completely legal. But really, it sounds like a good time. Ax-Caliber is Polk County’s first axe venue and coffee house, boasting food, beer & wine, locally-roasted Caliber Coffee, 14 lanes for axe throwing, pool tables, games, and big screen TV’s. AND, Military and first responders get a free cup of coffee and half off on meals when in uniform.

ride the van fleet trail

snap a photo at southgate

Since we spent the entirety of last year being couch potatoes, let’s get some sun, fresh air, and exercise! Take a leisurely (and socially distant) ride down 29.2 mile, 8-foot wide Van Fleet Trail. The General James A. Van Fleet State Trail will introduce you to a medley of landscapes to take in from pine flatwoods, cattle ranches, former citrus lands, swamps, and bottomland forest. A few more trails to do sick wheelies on are Circle B Bar Reserve and the TECO Auburndale Trail.

This is one for the scrapbook. If you don’t already have a selfie with the nifty Southgate Shopping Center arche, grab your polaroid. The South Florida Avenue shopping center was built in 1957 and is famously known for appearing in Tim Burton’s 1990 cult classic “Edward Scissorhands” starring Johnny Depp and Winona Rider. The Southgate sign is retro in all its glory and perfect for the gram or to send to Gram Gram if you’re here for college or just passing through.

Our area is abundant with inspiring murals, sculptures, fountains, and gardens. Create a map with all the public art you’d like to admire and make a day (or several) of it. adopt a pet or help a pup find its furever home

tee off Though I’m more of a putt-putt girl myself, Polk County has its fair share of beautiful golf courses. Enjoy a bit of luxury at Streamsong Golf Resort, practice your drive at Dundee Road Golf Range, or play a few holes (or fore!) at Cypresswood Golf and Country Club, or the Cleveland Heights Golf Course.

If you’re looking to expand your family by roughly four paws, consider adoption. SPCA Florida, The Humane Society, The Polk County Bully Project, and other area shelters are full of sweet animals looking for a good home. If you already have a full doghouse, try a Doggy Date at SPCA Florida. Through this program, you can take a dog to hang out for the day. Not only do they make the best company, but it also allows adoptable dogs to interact outside of SPCA and exposes them to potential new best friends.

take an orange grove tour If you haven’t done this at least once, we might have to take your Florida card away. The sights, the smells, the tasty citrus, Ridge Island Groves offers grove tours at their Haines City location where you can pick an orange right from the tree. Take a drive through Babson Park and Frostproof for stunning hillside grove views. If you take Highway 27 through Lake Wales to get there, you’ll notice the Florida’s Natural plant. Fun fact: Florida’s Natural started 85 years ago, and is one of the largest co-ops of citrus growers in the world, according to their website. You can even take a trip to their visitor’s center, The Grove House, to learn more about their citrus history, sample juice, and pick up a keepsake!

write a letter A handwritten note can be just the thing to brighten someone’s week. Checking on friends and family via social media, email, and Zoom is nice, but there’s an extra touch of humanity and kindness attached to a physical letter. Strike up a correspondence with a pal or let your grandma know you’re thinking of her. You can even support local businesses with your snail mail endeavor by purchasing stationery, note cards, and stickers at local gift shops. havenmagazines.com

go ice skating Pull out your warm clothes and go to a public skate at Lakeland Ice Arena. A friend of mine who moved to Winter Haven from up north said she loves it when Florida gets a cold snap. Not because of the change in weather, but because of the change in wardrobe. Most Floridians don’t so much have a “winter wardrobe” as a bunch of warm, sort of mismatched items of clothing we pull out in a panic when it drops below 70. She loves to see what sort of wacky winter wear people step out in. And really, what better place to outfit watch than a Central Florida ice rink during a public skate? 41

WORDS Tara Crutchfield

Laura is Limitless Laura Prazdnicane, 18-years-old, is a senior at All Saints Academy. She transcends academically and socially, earning high marks in her honors classes. She speaks three languages, has a part-time job, is involved in extracurricular clubs, and was crowned homecoming queen this year. “Laura has a heart… there’s something special about her. She’s an old soul,” said Ashley Bell Barnett. A quiet confidence radiates as Laura speaks about the life she’s had – the one that brought her to America from an orphanage in Latvia.

“They asked me if I would want to come here for school, and I said, ‘Of course!’… I never thought I would have a chance like this to have a good education and family.” Laura has been here for three years now, living with Ashley’s parents, Melony and Robbie Bell. “They are like my family,” she said of the Bells and Barnetts. Much of Laura’s recent life is colored brightly with memories of school, friends, and family, but almost two years ago, her dad passed away. She was in the United States when he died and traveled back to Latvia to attend his funeral.

“I grew up in Latvia in a town called Jelgava,” she began. Laura was just two when her mother passed away. She and her younger brother lived with their father after their mother’s death. Her father struggled with alcoholism, and at six-years-old, she and her brother went to an orphanage. Two years later, Laura would meet Wesley and Ashley Barnett, changing each other’s lives forever.

As with every other traumatic circumstance dealt her by life, she continued to stay positive and work hard. “She’s been through so much trauma in her life, but she’s still so compassionate, and so loving, and so caring, and wants to do more for herself than what her circumstance would behold. [...] Instead of being bitter about circumstance, it’s made her better and more understanding and more compassionate. She sees the world through a better lens than I could ever perceive the world,” said Ashley.

The Barnetts worked with an organization based out of Texas called Orphan Outreach to go on a mission trip to Latvia. They visited an orphanage on the Russian border and another in Jelgava.

Last fall, donning a sparkly black dress, Laura Prazdnicane was crowned All Saints Academy’s 2020 Homecoming Queen. “I felt really honored to be crowned homecoming queen. I honestly was not expecting it because this is only my third year at ASA, and I’m a foreigner. Most of the other kids that were running for the king and queen have been here since the pre-k,” she said. “When I lived in Latvia and when I would watch the “American movies,” I always wondered what it’s like to be chosen by the student body. We don’t have homecomings or proms in Latvia. Therefore, I thought that something like that would never happen to me. Girls in the movies usually are popular, but I’m not like them at all.” She described winning the homecoming court with her boyfriend, Kyle Meadows, as an “amazing experience.”

In the Jelgava orphanage, the Barnetts met 8-year-old Laura Prazdnicane. Laura remembers meeting Ashley for the first time. “She came on a mission trip to help kids with family issues and to talk about Jesus,” she said. “I met her, and we kind of just got really close. […] I think I saw her for only about two days. I didn’t know much about her, and I didn’t speak good English, so it’s funny that we got attached.” “We did have a connection,” said Ashley. “Laura was so innocent with her little smile, and regardless of not speaking the same language, you could feel the love between us in those days that we served. [...] When we left, my heart just broke. Wesley and I were on a little charter bus to leave the orphanage and I can remember her little handprints were up on the window. She said, ‘Don’t leave, don’t leave.’”

Though she is All Saints royalty, Laura doesn’t let the crown get in the way of her activities with Key Club, National Honors Society, as a backstage manager in the theatre program at her school, and her job as the babysitter for three young boys. She plans to start playing tennis this year too.

“I don’t know if we knew we needed to do more or if God planted a seed in our heart,” Ashley continued. “I feel like her story was already written before we were even involved. She was just a special girl. […] We didn’t find her; she found us.”

Laura is uninhibited in the pursuits of her interests, be them art or academia. Last year, she and a friend created a sculpture project in their NuVu class. “Our project got chosen for the upcoming park “Bonnet Springs Park” in Lakeland. We got to work with professionals to make the sculpture real. It was an amazing experience, and I’m super excited to see my sculpture in a park,” she said.

Laura and the Barnetts stayed in contact, and Laura would come to Winter Haven and stay with them during Christmas and summer breaks. She eventually met her biological aunt, who then became her guardian in Latvia, before being given the opportunity to move to the United States for school.

Bolstered by her accomplishments and exemplary grades, Laura was accepted to Florida Southern College. The high school senior is still exploring her career options. “At first, I wanted to be a doctor because I wanted to help people,” she said. “I want to help people because Ashley has helped me so much, and I want to do the same thing for others. […] Now I feel I want to go into business because I want to be

“In Latvia, I went to a boarding school. It was a good place, it was just away from my brother all the time and my grandparents, and it was a really small school,” said Laura, noting the added difficulty of finding a good college to attend there.

really successful. I want to be the opposite side to my family – I want to do well.”

have a real family, somebody that cares for you,” she said. Laura says her family has helped her beyond measure. “And that’s what I want to do in the future – I want to help people because they’ve shown me what it’s like when somebody helps and cares for you when nobody was. They opened my eyes.”

Surrogate sister Ashley Bell Barnett believes Laura is limitless. “Her confidence is definitely one of her brightest qualities, and I think she’s destined to do wonderful things whatever she chooses in life.” Opportunities have undeniably propelled Laura, but it is something innate which navigates her future and her past. Internal forces of courage and unrelenting work ethic – the courage to leave Latvia and move across the world, the courage to pursue things that interest her and excellence in her studies, and the drive to achieve it.

Though loss and trauma lace through the fabric of her life story, Laura uses these threads as motivation to remain thankful for everything. “You never know what’s going to happen tomorrow,” she said. “One day, I was happy, outside, playing with my brother. We were always alone, but it was still fun. The next day, police came and took us. You never know what’s going to happen. But also, now I’m here, and I never knew that would happen,” she smiled.

Complimenting these traits of strength and resilience are humility, gratitude, and a giving heart. “I’m really thankful for my family that I have now. They show me what it’s like to

Check Me Out ;) Books inspired by Polk County. Homeland: WEDDING BEES by Sarah-Kate Lynch My son and I have a tradition of driving through backroads to get to Homeland to restock our honey. So, my recommendation is to head to the Homeland Historic Heritage Park and find a sweet spot in the sun to read Wedding Bees. The novel is folksy and fun – a story filled with magical realism, love and lots of bees and honey. Think of it as a fairytale for grownups. Florida Southern: LOVING FRANK by Nancy Horan Florida Southern College is home to the largest single-site collection of Frank Lloyd Wright’s architecture – and it is a marvel to experience. “Loving Frank” is a fictional account of the scandalous love affair between Frank Lloyd Wright and Mamah Borthwick. Although this book is about Mamah, not Frank – it does bring an interesting sense of who he was (flaws included) to the beauty of his architecture. Circle B Bar Reserve: THE HIDDEN LIFE OF TREES by Peter Wohlleben Sitting under the live oak canopies of Circle B Bar Reserve is the perfect place to read “The Hidden Life of Trees.” The book is an engaging look at how trees communicate, support, and learn – yes, trees do all of these things for survival! This book brings attention to the wooded world around us and how much more is going on than we ever imagined. Mind blown. Bok Tower Gardens: UNDER A GILDED MOON by Joy Jordan-Lake The Pinewood Estate at Bok Tower Gardens reminds me of the novel, “Under a Gilded Moon.” Both invoke that time period where American Industrialists were building beautiful homes and gardens that celebrated American ideals of innovation and conservation – while at the same time the Country was reeling with inequities and radical change to traditional ways of life. “Under a Gilded Moon” takes place at the Vanderbilt’s North Carolina mansion, Biltmore. It weaves a suspenseful tale of mystery and romance while navigating the worlds of extreme wealth and poverty during the turn of the 20th century.

Downtown Winter Haven: MISS DREAMSVILLE AND THE COLLIER COUNTY WOMEN’S LITERARY SOCIETY by Amy Hill Hearth Winter Haven’s quaint downtown is a perfect strolling destination and the book it brings to mind is “Miss Dreamsville and the Collier County Women’s Literary Society.” Although set in a different part of Florida, the novel depicts small town life in 1962, and it brings alive that particular period in American history when cultural change was around every corner. The book centers on a group of misfits who form a book club whose daring selections open the novel up to themes of identity, race and gender. Although it deals with heavy themes – the book is actually a funny, quick reading escape. Van Fleet State Trail: SWAMPLANDIA! by Karen Russell Take a bike ride through the Green Swamp on the Van Fleet trail – at the Green Pond Picnic Pavilion pull out a copy of “Swamplandia!” and enjoy this atmospheric coming of age tale of an alligator wrestling dynasty set in the Everglades. Of course, watch out for those gators on the bike ride back! Hickory Lake Scrub: THE DRUNKEN BOTANIST by Amy Steward Hickory Lake Scrub is known for its rare and diverse flora and fauna – so, what comes to mind for me is the non-fiction book “The Drunken Botanist.” Booze and botany – what a combination! The book is an exploration of all of the ways humans have turned the horticultural around them into intoxicating libations. Part history, part science, part recipe book = perfect fodder for cocktail conversation. Sitting on my front porch: FLORIDA by Lauren Groff I love watching storms come in over the lake while I sit, semisheltered, on my front porch. “Florida” by Lauren Groff has that same intense energy of a summer storm. As anyone who has spent any long amount of time in Florida knows – it is both a place and a mood, and the book somehow captures the gothic darkness of the Sunshine State perfectly. The stories in “Florida” quickly pull you in and then deliver a slow burn all within a handful of pages. The stories stay with me long after I have closed the book.

100 Days of Giving As part of their 100-year anniversary celebration, Citizens Bank & Trust announced 100 Days of Giving, an opportunity for qualified Polk County non-profit organizations to apply for part of a $100,000 grant fund. Since 1920, Citizens Bank & Trust has been a stable and loyal partner with the communities they serve. This grant fund, designed to address local community needs, continues their commitment of giving by helping organizations that are making a difference to improve the lives of Polk County citizens. We asked President and CEO Greg Littleton about the initiative.

GL: No one could have expected what 2020 has brought us, especially nonprofit organizations that rely on a consistent stream of funding to provide badly needed services. Many nonprofits are people-facing, and when social distancing was put into place, this took a huge toll on the services they could provide. When you hear of the struggles our local residents were facing – needing food, shelter, and medical help, it wasn’t a question of should we help; it was a question of how we would and how we could best assist.

Q: Citizens Bank & Trust has chosen to celebrate its 100th anniversary by celebrating local nonprofit organizations. Why was this form of celebration important to Citizens Bank & Trust?

Q: As you reflect on your time with Citizens Bank & Trust and its role in the community over the last 100 years, what are you most proud of? What qualities or business practices do you think has made Citizens Bank & Trust such a cornerstone institution in Polk County?

GL: Supporting the communities that we serve has always been very important to our bank and at the very core of our mission. These locally-based organizations are the driving force in helping those in our own backyard. These local heroes are perfect examples of care and compassion, giving back and lending a hand to those in need. As local bankers who work for, live in, and support this wonderful community we all call home, each and every one of you are the reason we’re able to celebrate our 100th year in business. We’re humbled and thankful, so we thought the best way to express our gratitude was by giving back!

GL: Being a 100-year-old, family-owned, third-generation business based entirely in Polk County means we truly understand our community. We believe in putting people first, from our loyal family of customers to our Citizens Bank & Trust work-family. I really believe that if you consistently try to do the right thing, people will take notice and appreciate that philosophy. We also believe that if employees enjoy what they do, that it is passed along in each customer interaction and experience. I am proud of our bank and its accomplishments. I am proud of the countless families and businesses we have had the pleasure of serving, and at times helping, over the years. I am proud of our history and our legacy, and I am proud of the support we are able to give to our community.

Q: During any year, $100,000 worth of grant funds would mean a great deal to nonprofit organizations within our community. Perhaps this year it means more. What difference do you hope 100 Days of Giving makes to those organizations and the community at large?

Q: The 100 Days of Giving celebration will likely inspire other businesses and regular citizens alike. How would you encourage those businesses and community members to make “giving” a priority in their work and lives?

GL: Our hope is that the funds can assist these organizations in continuing to serve those who need it the most. We’ve seen the financial impact 2020 has had on many of our local nonprofits and, in turn, see the great need to step up and help them just like they help others every day. The needs of our local residents come first and foremost, and whether it’s 1920 or 2020, this is the vision and mission we have sought to carry out daily as Polk County’s community bank.

GL: We truly hope the 100 Days of Giving initiative will inspire others to take the time to volunteer, make a monetary donation, or even simply spread the word about organizations that are in need. I encourage everyone to take a moment and reflect upon your life. If your basic needs are met, it’s important to be thankful for all that you have and then work to try and help others. Once you, or a business, establishes this mindset, it’s much easier to give back to those who might not be as fortunate. All of us here at Citizens Bank & Trust urge our local businesses and community members to remember those in need even during the best of times. Every person in our community deserves a happy, healthy life. We’re grateful to be here 100 years later, and as always, we’re proud to be your bank.

Q: What are some of the stories or sentiments you’ve heard or seen from area nonprofits this year regarding their struggles and needs that sparked such a sizeable give-back initiative?

Here we go again Don’t hold your breath It’s coming A new year A new moment to change A new chance to make things right Opportunities will be endless Yet, still Time will be unforgivable Keep going Keep breathing Keep trying For this year will be different We’ve been through the worst But that doesn’t mean you’ve experienced the worst So don’t stop when it hits Take what you’ve learned What you’ve experienced Grow from it Accept it Love it Just remember A new year doesn’t wash away the sins It just marks the time to start some thing new

Balancing Work and Life The Andreasen Group Monthly Newsletter

As my family begins to plan our own modified Holiday celebrations for winter, I’ve been thinking about how to make this Holiday season special for my team, even as old modes of connection are limited. Professionals — especially those who work independently or run small real estate agencies — may feel the lack of in-person connection keenly at this time of year. The camaraderie and collegiality of sharing a laugh is different over a Zoom call, but you can still capture some of this joy and find space for your own celebrations without hopping between a different Holiday Zoom cocktail hour every night. Here are a few tips to help professionals navigate their work-life balance during this socially distant Holiday season. HOWEVER YOU CHOOSE TO CELEBRATE THIS YEAR, PRIORITIZE SAFETY As COVID-19 cases continue to spike in many states this month, encourage your team and family to keep local health restrictions in mind when planning Holiday travel and visits. It’s critical to encourage safe behavior in the office today, and this can be especially challenging for those who are traveling to see family when they want to return to work. • Clearly articulate the health protocols and safety standards for your office space. • Model diligent mask-wearing in your own office and if you travel, follow local quarantine guidelines on both sides of your trip. • Plan ahead and share your plans. Let your colleagues and clients know why you can’t meet face-to-face to help uphold a high standard of safety and precautionary measures. It’s important that everyone has time to relax with family and friends, and it’s critical that your Holiday plans don’t have a negative impact on the safety of everyone else in the office. To find this balance, communicate clearly and demonstrate the kind of behavior you hope to see in colleagues. For many companies and organizations, this means that your Holiday gathering may be another video call, but with the right attitude and a round of deliveries, you can still come together for an hour of cheer.

TO GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR CONNECTIONS, PLAN HOW YOU WILL DISCONNECT Heading into the Holiday season, as with

67

any time off, make a careful plan that will allow you and your team to disconnect from work to enjoy quality time with family and friends. • Set clear expectations for the whole team. Establish clear guidelines for what turnaround times are going to be and create a clear plan of action for what should happen if something goes wrong. This means establishing a communications plan. Ensure that everyone knows whether to text, call, or email in the event that they need urgent support. • Make a plan to cover client accounts and to give everyone a break. Our team aims to keep everyone offline as much as possible during the Holidays, and this takes careful coordination between team members to ensure that our customer support desk remains covered. • Micromanage your push notifications. What you choose to mute or leave on will be highly personal, but I typically mute my email program so that I can really finetune what I need to address and when. In most industries, real estate included, business tends to slow down for a few days while everyone takes a pause to spend time with loved ones. Even if you’re running your own company or independent firm, don’t fall into the trap of working through the Holidays. A key part of being your own boss is knowing when it’s time to clearly communicate your availability, put down your phone and spend quality time with family and friends. DEEP WORK REQUIRES PLANNED REST Maybe you get to dictate when and where you work. You can take a couple of days off, and you play an integral part in establishing your firm’s culture from the top down. The Holidays are a great time for you to ensure that you and your team are taking time to rest and recharge. And as you know, time off is critical to maintaining your ability to dial in and do deep work on a regular basis. As you look at the months ahead, you have a fresh opportunity to ensure that your time-off policies accommodate all your employees’ needs — leadership included. With the right policies in place, strong communication and a well-made plan, everyone on your team can get the rest they need to return to the office on Jan. 4 feeling refreshed.
