Boo! Welcome to the “Spooky Edition!” In this month’s cover story we have a little fun with two of the more famous Florida legends! We talk about the Skunk Ape, which we also featured on our tongue-incheek cover. Did I actually catch a photo of the mysterious Skunk Ape...or was it a guy wearing a costume I ordered off of Amazon? You’ll need to read the story and decide if you’re a believer. We also take the infamous Spook Hill challenge, take a ghost tour in Orlando and eat at a supposedly haunted restaurant. We have some fun with Halloween this month, travel along with our adventures! On a more serious note, we meet some incredibly talented people from Polk County. Derek Menchan is an absolutely amazing and talented cellist. Check him out on YouTube, he’s impressive! He also has a new album, so keep your eye out for it. Andrew Allen has big plans for the Lake Wales Arts Council. In fact, Allen is so interesting that we will get the rest of his story in our November issue. Learn about this talented jazz musician and what he’s bringing to the kids of Polk County.

Winter Haven Downtown CRA Board voted 4-2, in part, to authorize an additional $300k be spent on the proposed skate park on the west side of Lake Silver. A few months ago the Downtown CRA committee voted to recommend building a more robust park. The city staff are also applying for a state grant to help improve land surrounding the skate park.

A couple of hundred area residents converged on Central Park in Winter Haven on Sept. 11 to honor active duty military, veterans, and past and present first responders who volunteered to serve their country.

County EMS Fire department spending new & LWHS team up cash LWFD have cut up sections of old, unused fire hose and donated them to Lake Wales High School. The hose portions can be fit over the pneumatic closing mechanisms on the inside of the classroom doors, making them nearly impossible to open if there is an unfolding problem at the school.

Polk County commissioners recently voted to implement $100M in additional property taxes over the next 10 years mostly to benefit Polk County Fire Rescue emergency medical services. A few days prior, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced a $547,842 federal grant, also to benefit PCFR. They plant to purchase around 40 new ambulances, hire around 200 more EMS staff and fund some new EMS stations and a scholarship program.

Skunk Ape: Legends from the Florida Swamp You’ve heard of the Yeti, an abominable snowman type creature covered in hair as white as the snowy mountainous landscape they’re said to roam. And Bigfoot, the elusive giant ape-man that traverses the backcountry of the Pacific Northwest only to be caught in a blurry photo or two. Florida has its own legendary creature – the Skunk Ape. In the heart of the Everglades, about three hours south of Polk County within the Big Cypress Preserve, past a speckling of airboat tours and the tiny Ochopee post office is The Skunk Ape Headquarters. After a selfie with the Skunk Ape replica or the 28-foot fiberglass cougar statue out front, tourists can enter the small gift shop and purchase a magnet, hat, t-shirt, mug, or their very own copy of the Everglades Skunk Ape Research Field Guide. For a fee, visitors can step through a door in the back to see a collection of animals – different species of snakes, including a massive Reticulated Python, baby alligators, turtles, and birds to name a few. A part of the Trail Lakes Campground, this one-stop-Skunk Ape shop and research headquarters was started by Dave Shealy, an authority on the creature and a self-described Skunk Ape expert. Shealy is a generational gladesman. He claims his family can be traced as far back as the 1890’s in the Florida swamplands. The property where the research center is located was purchased by Shealy’s father around 1960 before the preserve even existed. “I believe we’re the only privatelyowned campground that’s within the boundaries of a national park anywhere in the country,” noted Shealy. Home to an estimated one million alligators, the remote area, “is the largest wilderness area east of the Mississippi in the United States.” havenmagazines.com

This desolate swamp scene makes a prime home for a creature as elusive as the Skunk Ape. Having heard tales of the Skunk Ape growing up, Dave became obsessed with the cryptid when he first encountered it at age ten. Dave and his older brother Jack were hunting in the glades when Jack saw something walking in the distance. Only about 100 yards from the boys, Dave couldn’t see it over the tall grass. “He picked me up and I looked and there it was,” said Dave. They agreed that it looked exactly as it had been depicted in the stories they’d heard growing up. An even earlier memory involved coming home from the store with his dad. There used to be a chain across the dirt road to their property. His dad got out to unhook the chain and found Skunk Ape tracks on each side of the road. “Although ten years old is when I actually saw one,” Dave said, “I was really young when he showed me the tracks. It’s pretty much been a lifelong thing, as far back as we can remember as children.” Now in his fifties, Dave has dedicated most of his life to researching the Skunk Ape. He’s taken multiple photos and a video of the creature. He has been featured on The Discovery Channel, The Travel Channel, TLC, Inside Edition and other national and international media outlets. Shealy described the Skunk as being bipedal, meaning they walk on two legs. The males stand up to seven feet tall, weighing in excess of 350 pounds and females notably smaller in stature between five and six feet tall, weighing between 180-250 pounds. Through his research, the Skunk Ape expert has found them to be omnivorous, eating plants and animals. The Everglades Skunk Ape Research Field Guide, a - CONTINUED ON PAGE 20 -

Skunk Ape blueprint of sorts penned by Shealy, details their diet to include fish, reptiles, and large mammals including deer and wild hog. Sightings of the tall, hairy animal with reddish-black fur are almost always associated with a strong odor similar to rotten eggs. Shealy attributes the smell to where they choose to make their dens during the dry season. “When it’s the dry season in the Everglades and the swamps are dry, that’s when I do most of my research where I can get out into the swamps and the ground is tacky and mucky and holds the tracks,” said Dave. “The alligator caves have an air pocket in the back and they’re quite large and there’s a lot of available food. Many times, I’ve found tracks going into the alligator cave and coming out of the larger, older caves.” He said the caves are full of methane gas which could be the cause of the stench.

During the wet season, Dave said Skunk Apes make their homes in the treetops. He compared their nests to that of an orangutan with branches laid over each other in the fork of a tree.

Shealy isn’t the only one to spot the Skunk Ape across the swampy landscape. Tourists and locals alike claim to have seen the elusive beast. “The majority of the sightings here in the Big Cypress Preserve have been within three miles of my place here,” he said.

“Right now, based on the research that I’ve done over the past twenty-five years, there’s a really good possibility that here in this three-million-acre area which encompasses the south side of the lake and down, we could have as many as seven to nine skunk apes that live here,” said Shealy. He bases this estimate on the differences in track sizes he has found.

A notorious sighting spot and Skunk Ape crossing is down Turner River Road. “Several tour buses operate out of Naples and Marco Island that bring visitors out here to the preserve to see the alligators and go on an airboat ride. One of the things they do is they go up this Turner River Road,” he said, beginning a story that takes place in the late 90s.

Differentiating from the infamous fivetoed Bigfoot tracks, all the Skunk Ape tracks Dave Shealy has found have been four-toed.

During this time, over the period of several months, there was a rash of sightings by these buses. “They saw Skunk Apes right there while they were viewing the alligators, either on crossing the roads or on the far bank in the trees.”

According to Shealy, “This is not the only area in Florida you’re going to find Skunk Apes.” A little closer to home in the Green Swamp, is a hotbed area for Skunk Ape sightings, as is the Ocala National Forest.

Several of the sightings were reenacted on an episode of Unsolved Mysteries, along with an interview with Shealy.

Thinking of planning a Skunk Ape expedition? If you’re going to visit the Everglades, Shealy suggests one of the pole boat or eco-tours they offer as the best way to experience Florida’s nature in the hopes of spotting wildlife (Skunk Ape and otherwise). A few pro tips from the Skunk Ape expert include wearing appropriate clothing such as snake boots, and to dress for the weather during the season you’re going. Also, be sure to keep an eye out for Florida’s many predators like the black bear, panther, and of course, snakes and alligators. You can find everything you need to know in the research field guide including an expedition checklist. One rather unusual item on the list was lima beans. Posted on a sign just before the hill is the legend of Spook Hill. The sign reads:

We decided, for research purposes, to try it out for ourselves.

“Ages ago an INDIAN TOWN on Lake Wailes lake was plagued with raids by a HUGE GATOR. The town’s GREAT WARRIOR Chief and the gator were killed in a FINAL BATTLE that created the huge swampy depression nearby. The chief was buried on its north side. Later PIONEER HAULERS coming from the old ARMY TRAIL atop the ridge above found their horses LABORING HERE… at the foot of the ridge … and called it Spook Hill. IS THE GATOR SEEKING REVENGE,

Continue Rod Serling voice: Instead, we entered The School Zone (doodoo-do-doo, doo-doo-doo-doo)! We arrived just as the adjacent Spook Hill Elementary was releasing students for the day. This meant extra traffic and lots of spectators.

Then it states simple instructions: Stop car on white line, place in neutral and let it roll back.

First, we watched as another car attempted it. It appears that they didn’t have any luck. They graciously moved out of the way for us to give it a go.

All I could think as we approached the hill was, “There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man’s fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call the Twilight Zone.” I, as is only right, thought it in the voice of The Twilight Zone’s Rod Serling.

We stopped on the white line facing the Spook Hill sign, put the car in neutral, and sure enough, it rolled back. Which is kind of what we expected to happen. We all agreed that we just weren’t getting it, maybe we were doing something wrong? We tried it going the other way down the street. That time we rolled

forward, which is what we expected would happen. I’ve heard that Spook Hill is an optical illusion, a trick of the eyes, but we weren’t seeing what was so spooky about it all. The only thing we collectively conceived was that maybe there was a smaller hill at the bottom which made it an optical illusion. In the end it was just us and another car turning around a few times, driving around like crazy people while I’m sure parents in the car line laughed heartily at the spectacle. Though we didn’t see the chief or the giant gator, it was fun to try out. I give Spook Hill, three out of five Exorcist head spins, since it was not very scary, but made for a fun trip with plenty of laughs!

INTRUDER ALERT It’s 3 am pitch dark. Nando and I are driving on this winding, wooded, mountain road in the middle of Upstate NY. It’s the beginning of our work day and bats are still circling us on the way to the film set. We feel like a couple of zombies having worked crazy 16 hour days for the past four weeks. We’re chugging over-roasted black coffee trying to wake up. Nando’s flipping through AM radio stations constantly changing them, because they do weird things in the middle of the night. Facing our current situation, Nando said, “Sally, we need to get back to Polk County.” I said, “Yeah… that or we should be sipping Champagne in Paris with Sebastien instead of this crappy coffee.” There’s poor reception on the radio because we are so rural. Suddenly, through the static we hear “Polk County, Bok Tower, Lake Wales, FL” and we look at one another like – are we losing it – or did they just say Lake Wales on the radio in the Catskill Mountains? Author, Mark Muncy was being interviewed on ‘Coast to Coast AM’ about his book called “EERIE FLORIDA.” He was speaking of his favorite story, The “Little Man.” A tale about a tiny man that stole oranges from an orange grove in Lake Wales. We were captivated. Nando knew a version of the story from his childhood. Then we got to talking about our own ghost story that happened on the farm in Winter Haven.

This is the tale of Tío Perucho... Nando’s Uncle from Colombia. Perucho was a big politician in Cartagena with a grand personality, but small in stature. He was well loved by the people. As much as the people loved him, he loved the Casinos, staying out until the wee hours of the night with the other politicians; gambling, living it up, smoking cigarettes and whatever else they did.

“That’s the man I just saw in my room.” Perucho and his wife Maria came to Winter Haven often to visit the farm. One trip, Perucho fell ill and had to go to the hospital. He and Maria spoke no English, so Nando’s mom found herself having to translate for them. She was crushed when she had to deliver the line that Perucho had throat cancer and needed surgery. Maria being very religious set up a shrine in the hospital room to Saint Mary, the mother of God. She lit candles and the hospital staff went wild blowing them out with smoke everywhere as Perucho was sitting calmly breathing oxygen. Her prayers worked. He made it through surgery and back to the farm to heal so he could go back to Colombia. - CONTINUED ON PAGE 24 -

Shaking, Janet ran and got a dusty photo album and passed it to the girl’s trembling hands. Upon flipping through the album Teresa pointed directly to a picture of Perucho. “That’s the man I just saw in my room.” Perucho’s body made it to Colombia but perhaps the rest of him wanted to stay in Winter Haven. When I finally met Teresa, she told me this story, which reminded me of when Nando proposed to me in Cartagena, Colombia. Maria was there. She came to meet me. As if with instruction, she removed a shiny gold wedding band from her finger and put it on mine. Maria said, (in Spanish) “This is my ring from my marriage to Perucho, may he rest in peace. He loved Nando and would have wanted you both to have it. May your marriage and faith be as strong as ours. Do not be afraid.”

Every morning Perucho would sit in a big arm chair in the guest room. Maria would delicately dress him in his native uniform-white shirt and white pants. She would put on his shoes, shine and tie them and complete his look with an Ascot to cover the stoma. Perucho’s new voice sounded like a robot coming out of a box attached to a tube. It reminded Nando of a video game at ‘The Barrel Of Fun Arcade.’ He taught Tío Perucho in English how to say “Intruder Alert! Intruder Alert!” over and over again. He still smiles today thinking about that. Early one morning while sitting in his armchair after his usual dressing ritual, Perucho looked out toward the placid Eagle Lake and saw a fox run across the pasture. He had an initial look of excitement and then immediate defeat knowing he was not going back to Colombia with Maria. He would be joining the Saints very soon.

He stopped breathing seconds later and collapsed. The house was silent. The fox was gone. Family came from Colombia to escort Maria with Perucho’s body home to Cartagena for burial. Years later, a young Venezuelan girl named Teresa came to stay and work the racehorses on the farm. One morning, Nando’s mom was having coffee and a hysterical white faced Teresa flew into the kitchen screaming and shouting, “Janet, there is a little man sitting in the chair in the my room!” He is wearing all white, shiny shoes and some cloth around his neck. Take a tour of Oak Hill Beginning in November, the Polk County History Center will offer a onehour guided tour of the historic Oak Hill Cemetery in Bartow. The idea of touring a graveyard may seem a little scary, but don’t let that stop you. The markers feature beautiful carvings and funerary art dating back to the 1800s. In Southern cemetery tradition, markers offer insight into their family and community life. Oak Hill is the final resting place for several of Polk County’s founding families, and their history will give you an appreciation for all that they’ve done to create what we now call home. The cemetery itself, is peaceful. It’s next to a road and a neighborhood with very little traffic. It’s so quiet, I could hear the birds chirping around me. There are several very old, large trees with moss hanging low, and the markers are arranged in a “Transitional Cemetery” form. This was developed in the mid to late 1800s and it features bordered family plots covered with grass and the

occasional flowering plants. Religious and military symbols, especially the Confederate Cross, started appearing on markers around the same time. It wasn’t until after WWI that markers were arranged in straight rows. This would be known as the “Modern Cemetery” form that we see today. I spoke with Cintia Ally, the Curator of Education and Programming at the Polk County History Center to learn more about the monthly tour. “We learn about the different type of funerary art, the different headstones and the more notable people that are buried there.” Some of those families include the Blount, Summerlin and Parker descendents, just to name a few. You will learn the history of these families, and their contributions to making Polk County what it is today. At the start of the tour, you’re given a handy little guide to the symbols on the markers and their meanings. Histories of 10 families that are interred are also given.

Cintia walked me throughout Oak Hill pointing out various markers and the history of the people interred. It is a cemetery, so for me, it was easy to get a sense of sadness walking through. There are children buried and the mysteries about their past remain. However, there are parents, soldiers and other prominent people that had a vision for this area and worked to make a better life for others. Learning the history of these people is fascinating. If you like history, you’ll appreciate this tour. It’s an in-depth look at the founding families of Polk. Oak Hill began, informally, back in 1860. It is the oldest existing manmade construction in the city of Bartow. In February of 2003, it was added to the US National Register of Historic Places. Tours of Oak Hill begin in November and are only one day a month, so plan ahead. A few tips: Bring water, wear sunscreen and bug spray. Wear comfortable shoes that are

appropriate for walking through grass. The tour meets at the Polk County History Center and then everyone drives to Oak Hill, approximately one mile away. Polk State College to host Voctave in concert on Oct. 13 Polk State College will host Voctave in concert on Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. in the Winter Haven Campus Fine Arts Theatre, 999 Ave. H N.E., offering a one-of-a-kind opportunity for students and members of the community to experience the world-renowned a cappella group. Derek Menchan Derek Menchan considers himself a retro kind of cat. Yes, cat, as in 1960s hip to the jive slang used by other cats, many long gone from this earth. Menchan is a smart cat, a professor of humanities at Polk State College. He’s also a highly respected cellist, who composes music from his studio in his home that overlooks a lake in Winter Haven. His studio and living room are appointed with mid-century modern furniture and funky finds he’s accumulated over the years. Most of his social media savvy students who tweet, text and play Fornite all night, know little about their professor’s throwback style and comeback life story. They will this fall, as Menchan is set to release his debut album, an eclectic mix of genres, sounds and styles. An eclectic representation of his life’s work, the new album pays homage to generations of greats like Quincy Jones, Frank Sinatra, Count Basie and Duke Ellington. Menchan fuses the sounds from these iconic music giants with 80s club and dance music, the soundtrack to his high school and college years. There’s some Johann Sebastian Bach in there too. “It is a paean to genreblurring postmodernism,” said Menchan. Menchan is such an old-school cat that he insists on releasing the album on vinyl and CD, as well as on internet music sites such as iTunes and Spotify. He’s excited about finally completing a project that began in 2006. He put it on the backburner and decided to resurrect the project earlier this year. With equal parts irreverent tongue-in-cheek humor and soul-stirring atmospheric orchestrations, Menchan shows off his chops as a musical arranger, something he’s aspired to since he was in grade school. Menchan started playing the cello in the third grade. His father, Herbert Menchan, was one of the first black school principals in Polk County. While a student at Winter Haven High School, Menchan was a background singer and bassist in a funk band. After college, Menchan performed as a solo cellist in several orchestras and ensembles in New York and Houston. “I’ve always been fortunate enough to be in right places, at right times, which made it such that I could meet luminaries in various artistic mediums,” said Menchan. He’s worked with Kanye West’s hand-picked musical arranger and engineer, producer Mike Dean and other industry heavies.

The son of educators, Menchan takes a studious approach to music. “When I was a teenager I would collect all the interviews and magazine articles and recordings I could of the two greatest cellists of the time—the passionate and volcanic Rostropovich and the aristocratic and eloquent Janos Starker.” Later in life, Menchan got to know Starker, who referred to him as “an old friend.” Menchan went on to study at the Manhattan School of Music with Olga Rostropovich, Slava’s daughter. After polishing his skills and earning a solid reputation in New York, Menchan decided to return to Winter Haven. In New York, he was building a reputation but struggling to stay afloat. In 1993, Menchan called his mother, who had been widowed since the 1970s. He felt a little lost about “what to do next?” When he called her back then, he sought direction, a way forward. “I had never struggled before,” he said. She encouraged him to move back to Winter Haven and pursue a career here. He did. “It wasn’t a good idea. I went through some real hard changes. Went off the beaten path,” he said. This included a bout with drug addiction. “So, after going to Manhattan School of Music and being first cello and beating out known cats, I come home to Winter Haven and I’m a teacher’s aide at Westwood Middle School. Obviously, being a middle school teacher is an honorable tradition but that wasn’t exactly what I thought was in my purview when I left the Manhattan school of music.” He never stopped playing and producing music. He took gigs when possible and kept in touch with colleagues who were going places. “I got tired of being a teacher’s aide. The next step was for me to figure out what to do,” he said. “Then when I got my head out of my you know what and went out to Houston,” he said. In his late twenties and early thirties, Menchan played cello as part of an orchestra for Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, Diana Ross and other big names. These acts would come to town with Menchan called their core band and backup singers. But they would hire strings and brass instrumentalists locally. He remembers being seated so close to Ray Charles that he could see his fingers at work on the piano. “If you had a good reputation you’d get the call,” he said. Once hired, he’d arrive with other local musicians and work from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. rehearsing music without the presence of the

star performer. Later, just a couple of hours before the concert, the star might arrive and do a quick run through. “It was a high-pressure situation but right for me at that time.” Menchan has friends who still play with big names, including Beyoncé. “But they don’t get any spotlight. It’s all about Beyoncé.” At this stage in his life and career, Menchan feels he’s grown beyond backup status. “ I am at the height of my artistic abilities and at the peak of my musical vision; I feel I have something unique and relevant to say with and through this project and the time feels right to do so,” he said. “I am an old school cat in every way and people seem more and more every day to be intrigued by retro styles in fashion, architecture and music, and so I find myself quite at home contributing something to that arena.” He’s also comfortable in his own creative skin. He admits that his desire to explore Basie, Bach and Biggie might not appeal to the masses. “It’s niche. Not for everybody.” In October, he’s performing alongside fellow Polk State professor Holly Scoggins, who teaches art. Menchan will paint while Scoggins paints. “One thing I really appreciate about Derek is that when collaborates he is so open to other’s ideas and encourages individuality,” said Scoggins. “It is truly a collaboration and never a dictated partnership. I look forward to painting alongside him this fall.” Scoggins admires Menchan’s commitment to bringing world-class artistry to Polk County. “Derek is an inspiration, not only is he an accomplished professor, but he equally dedicates himself to his music and performances,” said Scoggins. “He is an asset to Polk County because he tirelessly collaborates, promotes the arts, and continuously works to provide world class events for residents of Polk County. There is no need to travel to New York, or LA, top-notch performances are being scheduled annually by Derek’s Voices of the people.” Menchan has performed all over the country, in Canada and Europe. “What I do, in all aspects of my life, is bring things and people together, often from disparate quadrants, and meld them in new and hip ways. That is what I do on this album: I call them “re-imaginings;” I take a tune and cast it in a totally different light that what is the norm. And guess what? Sometimes it works.”

Anne McDonough Anne McDonough has made a career helping people connect with passed loved ones and through intuitive life coaching, out of her Windermere based Tranquiliti Wellness Center. An International Medium, Intuition Life Coach, and Reiki Master, Anne’s spiritual gifts made themselves apparent early in her life. As a little girl, Anne says she didn’t grow up in the best environment. “I was always directed to hide in certain places and know that I was out of harm’s way,” she said. Her grandmother whom she was very close to, passed away around the time she was in second or third grade. On a particularly bad night after her grandmother had passed, her step-father was abusing her mother. “A big angel appeared at the end of my bed and basically said, ‘You’re going to be okay, but you need to help your mom.’” She got out of bed, shaking, crying, and intervened in the situation between her mom and step-father. She feels that if she hadn’t, he would have killed her mother. “That was the first revelation that something was different about me,” remembered Anne. Anne explained the energy in her life really turned up when her second child was born four months premature, causing her to quit her job in order to care for her daughter. “She left the hospital with seven doctors and we didn’t know if she’d live. I had to channel a different energy than I was used to because before that. I was in finance and accounting with Bank of America as a commercial lender, but when I left my job, my whole focus was her.” “I think, the Universe, or however you want to look at it, was showing me where I was going to be going, but channeling me in one energy which was healing energy and helping my daughter heal,” Anne said. To help her daughter, she began to learn more about wellness, not knowing at the time that she would be led to eventually do it as a career. Ten years ago in July, Anne felt led to the building she’s in currently. She started her business without any money

or a name for it, just going as she felt guided. “I started listening to what they gave me,” she said about the what she refers to as the Trinity. To Anne, the Trinity isn’t so much a religious idea, but the concept of God’s energy in general.

With no experience in putting an art show together, Anne jumped in with both feet and is now going on her fourth year. In June, she was asked to open the gallery in the back of her wellness center. “It’s all very synergistic,” she says.

Listening to this guidance paid off for the medium, “I’m still here ten years later and I just renewed another fiveyear lease.”

By January, she hopes to start Healing Through the Arts in which people will be able to use art and the spiritual aspects of what Anne does to heal and transform.

Listening still to what she was meant to do, she began practicing energy work. “In the energy work, loved ones would start coming in, helping facilitate the healing of the person whether it was a trauma that they had been through when they were eight or a car wreck or the loss of a loved one.”

Anne explained, “I’m always telling my clients that they need to connect more with the right side of their brain because that’s where all your creativity and your artistry and your relaxation resides.” Because of the easy access to technology and the fast-paced, urgent immediacy of connecting on technology, Anne says it’s important to have balance in life. She’s currently writing a book, Balance is the Key. On her YouTube channel, she is uploading videos about each key and then plans to release her book.

About five years ago, she went with a client of hers to Cassadaga for a session with a medium. The medium told her that she would not be able to get into the college she wanted to attend in England because they were booked up for a year. She got in in two weeks. Once there, she trained at the Spiritualist College in the advanced course. “I was already doing it, I just didn’t realize I was doing it.” Now, Anne does what she calls Messages of Love from Above. She uses her abilities to give people detailed messages from passed loved ones. She’s even created a YouTube channel to teach people about how to connect to their spiritual side. Can anyone do what Anne does? “I believe that everybody has intuitive abilities. It’s just a matter of tapping into them and that is what I teach.” “I do believe we’re all one and we all are linked in every way and we’re all equal, nobody is better than anyone else, but I do feel it requires a certain person to be able to do mediumship,” she said. “It’s all about paying attention to your thoughts and what you say and just really focusing on the things that matter in life.” Another aspect of what she does is healing through art. About four years ago, she was asked to do an art show for the town of Windermere as she was on the Downtown Business Committee.

An Interview with Andrew Allen, Lake Wales Arts Council Executive Director: Part I Jazz Musician and self-professed nerd, Andrew Allen may be new to the Executive Director position at the Lake Wales Arts Council, but the arts council has almost always been a part of his life. A thirdgeneration Lake Wales resident, Andrew attended Spook Hill Elementary and McLaughlin Middle School. He went to Lake Wales High School where he switched his musical focus from piano and trumpet to drums and classical percussion during his sophomore year. He was the Drum Major during his senior year of high school and later enrolled at the University of South Florida for classical percussion. When a timpanist from a local orchestra spoke to his class about the limited number of jobs in their field (only twelve full-time paid timpanist positions at the time, in 2007), Andrew said, “I realized at that point that maybe I should re-adjust,” he laughed, “and explore other career fields that were in music.” He took a jazz piano class and fell in love with it. “When I took that class I realized that I could either play Chopin my whole life, or I can try to be Chopin,” he said regarding his inclination toward composition. He switched his degree to jazz studies which was a difficult transition for the musician. From age five to 18, Allen played classical music, so he had to work twice as hard to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Jazz Studies in the three remaining years of college in order to graduate on time. In 2011, after graduating, Andrew signed to a record label. From there he went on to record multiple jazz albums doing renditions of themes from Star Trek, Star Wars, Nintendo, Blizzard, and Marvel Comics. “I’m a huge nerd, that’s just the way it is,” he said with a smile. Fast forward to last year when he and his wife, Brooke Allen, moved to Tallahassee. She had a job with Keller Williams and he was writing music for CBSI, Discovery, and radio station 104.1 in Orlando. In January 2018, Andrew was told about a possible job opening at the LWAC and he knew he wanted to apply for it. “I used these services for a long time when I was growing up, I did the summer arts camp here in the early 90’s,” he said. More recently, in 2016, Andrew headlined their Jazz Festival.

He explained, “Through all those experiences, I knew this was my best opportunity to affect change in the Lake Wales area for all of the students that need the arts – that don’t just want them, but for their lives, they have to have them.” Andrew went above and beyond when submitting his resume, including a 30-page plan for their upcoming season. He programmed all of their exhibits, concert series, and classes, even writing a curriculum for all their classes. “I wanted to prove that I was serious about it,” he said. And LWAC did take him seriously. He was announced as the new Executive Director during the last week in February at the Arts Festival. That original plan he submitted though ambitious, is almost exactly what they’re doing now with 40 programs including ten education programs servicing almost 200 students, a nine-part concert series, and five-part exhibit series. They’ve also created partnerships with local programs like the Family Literacy Academy where they send teachers once a month to work with parents and students. Cultivating the arts in students is especially important to the Executive Director. He spent a year and a half as a band director which he says was one of the most fulfilling and stressful times of his life. “That’s when I realized that if I wanted to do a service to these kids, that I had to go get my Master’s Degree and I had to become a better version of myself,” he said. Which he earned about seven months prior to starting with the arts council. “By offering these programs we’re keeping kids out of trouble and giving them an opportunity to better themselves creatively,” he said. “I think that fine arts with kids teaches them about respect, it teaches them about discipline and expectations. There’s a lot of life lessons happening in our classes maybe these kids aren’t getting anywhere else.” Where would Andrew Allen like to see LWAC in five, ten years down the road? Something he’s put plenty of thought into, he named off programs he envisions – youth symphony, youth chorale, youth jazz band ensemble, adult brass choir, adult woodwind choir, and a community band.

“I would love for our exhibit series to grow, I would love for our concert series to really take off and to sell out season tickets months ahead of time,” he expressed. Ghost Hunting in Downtown Orlando It’s hard to imagine Orlando in the days of hoop skirts and top hats, ladies of the night and wild west justice. Now, though the skyline is staggered with impressive architecture both new and old, lights, music, restaurants, the heartbeat of a city, and I-4 buzzing steadily nearby throughout the day and night, there are still haunts from times past that call downtown Orlando their home. If you’ve ever found yourself peeking through your fingers while you binge on ghost hunter reality shows and wanted to know what it would be like in the action, well, you can. American Ghost Adventures is an Orlandobased ghost tour company that hosts a two-hour walking tour delving into the history of the area, ghost stories, and paranormal investigations inside some of the haunted buildings. This “not just a walk in the dark” ghost tour has been voted one of the top ten in the world by TripAdvisor and guests, and is listed in USA Today’s 10 Best Tours for Orlando Visitors. We started our spooky evening at 8 pm on a warm September night at the Hairy Buffalo downtown. There we met our Ghost Ambassadors, Ting, founder of AGA and full-time Firefighter/ EMT by day, and Karleena who moved to Orlando from Seattle and has been in the ghost biz for a year now. First, they explained what we’d be doing and that the tour is not meant to convince you that spirits exist. They present the evidence and it’s up to you whether or not you come away a believer. It was also important for us to learn about the three different types of haunts we could potentially encounter on the tour. One, a residual haunt – a ghost you cannot communicate with, one that seems to be caught in a time loop, like a broken record Ting said. Two, the intelligent haunt – this ghost can interact with you. They can move objects and even touch you. According to Karleena, they’re aware that you are there and sometimes try to communicate. And three, an object haunt – a ghost that is attached to an object. This could be a piece of furniture or jewelry, a doll, a family heirloom. Next, we needed the proper investigatory equipment. Each of the members of our group was given a K-II Meter, which Ting explained is an electromagnetic finder, measured in MilliGauss (mG). It has a range of lights from green to red. The green light is always on, letting you know the equipment is working. The bigger spectrum and the brighter the colors lighting up on the meter, the stronger the energy. This means electricity from light fixtures and other electronic devices can make it light up. If you are able to replicate it, it’s just electricity. If it cannot

be replicated, the energy passing by you may have been a haunt. We all put our cell phones on airplane mode to avoid any interference from them as well. “Spirits are made of energy,” said Ting. “We know that energy can’t be destroyed, it just becomes another form. For people that can’t see ghosts, this helps them out a little bit.” We went into our first building – the Bumby Arcade which has been a part of the city since 1886. As our ambassadors told the history of the building and the Bumby family, we walked the arcade looking for spikes on our K-II meters. We did get some activity from light fixtures and such but discounted it as soon as we were able to replicate it. The group got pretty excited when we saw the first real action on our meters. We found ghosts! Ting and Karleena brought out the next pieces of equipment that would be instrumental to our investigation – flashlights. They turned the flashlights on, leaving a gap between the battery and the spring, shaking them so we knew they weren’t rigged. They placed them in different areas. Flashlights are used to communicate with any spirits in the room by asking them questions and letting them respond by turning the lights off and on. At every building we investigated, we each introduced ourselves to any potential haunts. At the Bumby Arcade, we didn’t get any communication through the flashlights. As we walked out and passed Hamburger Mary’s, which we had eaten dinner at before the tour, we asked Ting and Karleena about the rumors of it being haunted. The purported haunt is a little girl that has been seen by staff in and around the restaurant, as well as tapping and knocking on the walls. Our ambassadors explained that the area is haunted and that a woman dressed in white Victorian garb has also been seen, though restaurants and businesses aren’t quick to admit that they are haunted. We stopped in front of Ferg’s Depot where Ting told us more about the Victorian woman in white, whose name they found out, is Annabelle. At the depot, they’ve also captured photos of a man in a tophat thought to be the late train conductor, Earnest Mills. Next, was the Elijah Hand Building. Hand was the second undertaker for Orlando, the first person in the southeast to practice embalming (which he did on the second floor) and ran a furniture shop in the same building because, according to Ting, “Who better than the furniture maker to make your coffin?” The building would go on to host a series of failed businesses. At one 68

point, it was a nightclub, The Blue Room, named from the leftover blue velvet casket liner the owners used to decorate it with. We got to stand at the most haunted street corner in Orlando, the corner of Pine and Magnolia. According to Ting, the reason it is so haunted is that it’s where the ley lines cross. “Ley lines are the longitude and latitude lines that run naturally through the earth and when they connect, it creates what a field that is so powerful it causes a burst. That burst will create a vortex or a corridor for the dead to walk through,” she said. They explained that there are always three things that can be found at a vortex: a place of worship, ghost sightings and hauntings, and a place of burial. Ting and Karleena continued at each stop to relay these compelling historical events and ghost stories like the site of the first Orlando bank robbery and a haunted cinema. Throughout the two-hour tour, I can’t think of a single moment I wasn’t engrossed in their stories and the experience. The crescendo of the tour came when we had circled back around to Church Street. We made our way up the creaky stairs that lead to the top floor of the Hairy Buffalo. The ghost hunting was about to get real. We got to an eerily silent, pitch black room so dark it took a few moments for our eyes to adjust. With flashlights set up and K-II meters in hand, we were ready to communicate with some specters. After a few questions, the light came on. Another question, off. Another, on. The hairs on my arms stood on end as people from our group continued to as questions… and get responses. We made our way to another room, this one for children (ghost children), and again we got activity. This night was a singular experience. This informative, thoroughly spooky, and fantastically entertaining tour is definitely worth doing and I plan to do it again.
