Polk County’s Rental and Utilities Assistance program application deadline has been extended until Sept. 30. The Board of County Commissioners allocated $17 million for the program earlier this year and the county began taking applications June 1. The application deadline has been extended to give those who need it more time to apply. This funding can provide up to $12,000 in assistance directly to landlords, property management, and utility companies on behalf of qualifying Polk County residents. Information about income restrictions, the paperwork required to apply, and other program eligibility requirements can be found on the county website at www.polk-county.net/ covid-19/rental-and-utilities-assistance-program.

RIDES ANNOUNCED
Polk County Waste & Recycling’s residential customers may be experiencing collection service delays. This may not end soon, Polk’s contracted residential haulers are experiencing a shortage in labor supply. Polk County contracts with Advanced Disposal Services and FCC Environmental for residential curbside collection. With recent spikes in COVID keeping employees out of the workforce, the two hauling companies are running daily routes with about 12 less truck drivers than normally scheduled. If residents need to report a missed collection or request bulk pickup service, please submit a service request on polkwastewise.net.
Polk County’s Development Review Committee followed the proper guidelines and allowed for due process when approving a 28.5-acre development off Crystal Beach Road in May 2020, according to an order from Circuit Judge Wayne Durden. The order denied all claims made in the petition by residents challenging the approval of the Winter Haven development. The proposed development from Heritage Investments of Polk LLC had already been denied when it was originally proposed as a 94-unit development in 2017. The company challenged the denial in court and lost in a 2019 ruling. The development was later approved as an 87-unit residential infill development. The DRC provided more than 70 comments to the applicant regarding the application. Following a May 14, 2020 hearing, the applicant submitted a revised site plan and addressed the numerous comments. The DRC ultimately approved the plans on Aug. 10, 2020.

FOOD & DRINK You voted – we counted!
Every year for our Best Of Haven issue, we put out a list of categories for our readers to vote on from June through the end of July. At the end of the voting period, the votes are tallied, and winners are announced in the September issue. This issue is important to us for many reasons. Mostly because we love to hear from YOU! Live like a tourist
We live where others save for months to vacation. That's right. We said it. Look around you. While visitors book their plane tickets, reserve their hotel rooms and make their itineraries, we get to be surrounded by the Florida vacation life daily! But as locals, we can tend to go blind to the fact that we live in a vacation destination. We lose the bright-eyed wonder of exploring! So we at the Chamber are here to encourage you to take the time to live like a tourist! Here are a couple of ideas to get you started: 1. Paddleboard - Get up close to natural Florida with a Paddleboard Winter Haven tour (or yoga) on our Chain of Lakes (paddleboardwinterhaven.com) 2. Boat Tours - Forget the exercise and sit back and relax with a pontoon boat cruise of the Chain of Lakes with Living Water Boat Cruises or be your own captain with rentals from Marine Supply - The Boat Center (livingwatercruises.com and marinesupplyboats.com) 3. Explore Natural Florida for FREE - Who needs to buy a ticket to a land of gators when you can see them in their element at Circle B Bar Reserve? If grabbing the binoculars, camera and sunglasses doesn't make you feel like a tourist, we don't know what will. (polknature.com) 4. LEGOLAND Florida Resort - We have the most AWESOMEST theme park and water park for kids age 2-12 and coming in 2022, Peppa Pig Theme Park, for the preschoolers. Annual passes come down to dollars a visit if you take advantage of this being in our own backyard! (legoland.com/florida) 5. Bok Tower Gardens - Find your zen at the most beautiful garden in Florida and take in the tunes of the 60+ bell carillon tower. (boktowergardens.org) 6. Game Night - Tourists love indoor fun too. From arcade games, to VR to laser tag (and throw in a round of bowling too) at Cypress Lanes. Or reminisce with old-school pinball games and art at the new small business Artcade. Best Retelling of a Classic:
Best Culinary Cozy Mystery:
THE CHOSEN AND THE BEAUTIFUL By Nghi Vo Best New Take on a Classic Trope :
A mystery served up with laughter, family, and lots and lots of yummy Filipino food! Lila Macapagal moves back to help with the family restaurant and soon is the main suspect in the murder of her ex-boyfriend turned food critic. Lila has to turn into an amateur sleuth to clear her name and solve the puzzle. Manasala proves that mysteries don’t always have to be violent and dark.
What if the horror films we grew up with were based on actual events? And the final girls (the “good girls” who survive the killer in the end) are real heroic survivors, now middleaged and in a support group? “The Final Girl Support Group” is a fast-paced thriller full of twists and turns. It is funny, over the top, and wonderfully subversive.
“The Chosen and the Beautiful” is a retelling of the Great Gatsby - this time told through Jordan Baker’s eyes instead of Nick. It is faithful to the main story and incidents in Gatsby, but by slightly shifting perspective - readers are taken down a new path even more beautiful and ephemeral than the original. However, this retelling also kicks up the biting social commentary - adding new threads of context to the story. It is the rare kind of book that doesn’t try to recreate the original source but rather adds a new element to it - elevating both books in the process.

THE OTHER ME By Sarah Zachrich Jeng
PROJECT HAIL MARY By Andy Weir
THE VIEW WAS EXHAUSTING By Mikaella Clements and Onjuli Datta
On the night of her 29th birthday, Kelley, a single artist living in Chicago, goes to the bathroom to find a little peace and quiet. But she opens the door to a whole alternative life instead. One where she is married with children and living in the small town she grew up in. “The Other Me” is a genre-bending science fiction/mystery/thriller, a fast-paced page-turner with a thought-provoking take on technology and time travel.
Ryland wakes up and doesn’t remember who he is or where he is, and to make matters worse, he is all alone in a spaceship. Interweaving past and present, the reader is pulled into Ryland’s POV as he starts to realize he, alone, is on a mission to save Earth. Although written with a good deal of scientific detail, Weir adds enough humor, danger, and thrills to make this an engaging read.
British Indian actress Win and rich boy Leo have a decade-long fake relationship built to help bolster their reputations, but things become more complicated as time passes. A faux romance with real feelings could come off as a tired cliché, but the story is imbued with glitz and glamour, depth, and warmth. “The View was Exhausting” is a fun, clever escape you won’t want to put down.

Best Book About Sweat: THE JOY OF SWEAT By Sarah Everts Mmm...a book about sweat? Yes! Everts has written a book where sweat takes its place as an unsung superpower. Thoroughly researched and full of entertaining insight, “The Joy of Sweat” takes us around the world, through time and cultures, to learn about the science of sweating. Wholly unexpected and surprisingly educational.
Exploring the history of London through the unique lens of mudlarking - a form of scavenging the mud of the Thames river during low tide. From Roman weapons to Tudor goblets to brightly colored Victorian toothpaste pots to human remains - Maiklem has found so much treasure in the tidal mud of the river bank. Maiklem weaves a unique narrative history of London by combining the social history of the treasures she finds discarded in the river bed with a broader historical context. She also adds a lot of personal musings on the art of scavenging and the peace it can bring.

Sacabo conjures a world of mystery and mysticism in her work, excavating stories about lives lived in secret struggle or without inhibition, reviving traditional processes of photography like photogravure and tintypes, and giving much-needed voice to women of the past whose legacies still inspire and haunt the artist to this day. 863-688-7743 Schedule your visit online.

to experience the chain of lakes “We just became members last week and we’ve already been out 4 times.” Holley Townsend is a new member of Freedom Boat Club of Winter Haven along with her husband and kids. The family joined the club to take advantage of the last few weeks of freedom before school started. But it was only after getting access to a fleet of boats for less than the costs of one that she realized how much freedom she really gets with the boat club. “The staff in Winter Haven help make this a great experience for our whole family. Everyone there has been very kind and helpful,” says Holley. When you have a team of professionals who clean, maintain, and house the boats for you, you can really relax and enjoy the water more than ever before.
A membership with Freedom Boat Club provides even more than just the boats. In her first few weeks in the club, Holley won a social media Member Contest, received a giftcard to Tanner’s Lakeside Restaurant & Bar, and participated in a Fishing Clinic for members with Big Bass Fishing Guide. Freedom brings entrance into a boating lifestyle and a new community of friends, social events, and fun, exciting opportunities. Holley sums up her experience - “We’re looking forward to making many memories on the water!”
Freedom Boat Club gives you more time on the water & helps you enjoy the boating lifestyle like never before.

boating made for everyone
Freedom Boat Club was founded to make the boating lifestyle easier and more affordable for everyone! The club takes care of all the cleaning, maintenance, and overhead expenses, while the members simply pay a one-time up-front cost and monthly membership dues. The club handles the responsibilities of boat ownership and the members get to enjoy all the freedoms and benefits of the boating lifestyle without the hassles. That means our members get a fleet of boats fit for any occasion - pontoon boats for family day, deck boats for tubing and touring the area, fishing boats for the anglers, and so much more.
the Freedom Boat Club story
Freedom Boat Club of Winter Haven is one of more than 285+ FBC locations across the US. Our local franchise was established in the summer of 2018 when Richard and Janet Hicks had a vision for bringing hassle-free boating to the Winter Haven area. At the former location of Bebo’s Marina Restaurant, and the Rainbow Boat Basin and Trailer Park on W Lake Eloise Drive, the renovated property now offers vacation rental units, private wet-slip boat storage, and is the home of Freedom Boat Club. The first year of operations, the club grew to own 5 boats and welcomed its first 30 members. In July of 2019, Edward Allen was brought on board as the new general manager, and since then the club has doubled in membership about every 8 months. FBC of Winter Haven now has 20+ boats in the fleet and more than 240 total members.
Not only that, they get all the fun without the headaches. Because our dock staff clean and prep the boats, members just reserve a boat, show up, take the boat out for a relaxing, fun day, and bring the boat back to the dock. Now, boating isn’t a 3-day commitment of prepping, trailering, launching, going out, and then having to clean up after. All the time on the boat is adventure time!
The club is growing fast because of the amazing value and lifestyle experience offered through membership. Freedom Boat Club of Winter Haven is preparing to add two additional launch locations on the Chain of Lakes in 2022 and has ordered an additional 30+ boats for replacements and additions to the fleet. Our members are especially excited to have better access to the northern chain with our new Lake Hartridge location off Havendale Blvd, opening very soon! We love serving the Winter Haven community!

The best part is, you can join the club even if you’re a boating newby or have never even been on a boat before. No matter what level of experience or expertise, our members get free 1-on-1 training to feel confident behind the helm. Our licensed captains train members when they join the club and are available for ongoing training, so you can always have peace of mind that everyone on the boat is safe. Plus, with exciting member socials and events every month, as well as contests, giveaways, and opportunities to give back to the local community, Freedom Boat Club of Winter Haven members really become a family.
Let us make boating simple for you!

Radiation Therapy Dosimetrist “I moved in six months before the pandemic changed our world. I was so glad I was here during the lockdown because I wasn’t alone. I felt safe from unnecessary exposure from outside sources, my meals and packages were delivered. I had everything I needed – including love and support from a truly wonderful staff. Also, during the pandemic, I had a knee replacement. I didn’t even have to leave the community for rehab because rehabilitation was right downstairs.”
“Moving to The Estates was one of my best decisions. It has everything I need – and want: a beautiful home, a convenient location, friends who share my values and the promise of Lifecare should my health needs ever change. Each day brings new opportunities for me to enjoy something new and fun … I’ve joined the choir, I volunteer, I go to Bible Study, I work out, I’ve even played bean bag baseball and used a stationary Cypress bike to take a road trip… 2 Bedrooms | 2 Bathrooms 987 sq. ft.
I also appreciate that, like me, The Estates is prepared for the unexpected. No matter what Signature Cypress happens, The Estates has a 2 Bedrooms | 2 Bathrooms 987 sq. ft. plan that will help the staff deal with anything life throws its way and that brings me tremendous peace of mind.”
