DAVE’S STORY Merry Christmas, I hope you got most of your shopping done. I’m usually a last minute type of person but this year I planned ahead and did some shopping early! For some reason though, I still feel like I’m missing someone from my list; I hope not. Boy how things change, you have to give more the older you get, but it’s all good. Talk about giving, when I was a kid both parents worked; like most nowadays. During the busy Christmas shopping season, they stepped up their work hours even more! My uncle who was in the Marine Corps took care of me when they weren’t around. During Christmas he would volunteer his time with Toys for Tots. One year when I was really small he brought me along to meet Hobo Kelly. I remember bits and pieces about the event. It was held at Toys R Us and my uncle made me pick out a toy or doll. After I picked it out he told me I had to donate it...I was like...WHAT! According to him he said it took some convincing to make me understand why. I wasn’t the easiest kid to convince but I remember handing it off to Hobo Kelly. Now that I’m older Of course I understand what my uncle was teaching me and I’m glad he did. If you’re not familiar with Toys for Tots, it’s one of the top-rated charities. It started in 1947 as a charity event inspired by Major Bill Hendricks’ wife. She tried to donate homemade Raggedy Ann dolls to needy children but could not find an organization to do so. So with his help she gathered up Marine reservists and collected 5,00 toys for children by placing bins outside of Warner Brothers movie theaters. From that time forward Toy for Tots had been providing toys, books, and other gifts to less fortunate children. If you’re looking to do some good this Holiday season I would like to suggest Toys for Tots. One main reason is over 97% of the donations goes to their mission. So when you open your wallets to them you will know your money will make a difference; and yes you can donate toys too. Just google Toys for Tots. If you don’t donate to Toys for Tots please do something this year to support a cause you believe in.

When and what got you into surfing? Growing up on Kauai you either surf or play sports and I did them in that order.

SPENCER CHANG

Did you have a time period you weren’t surfing? If so when and why did you start back up? After I graduated high school and moved over to Oahu, I got into tennis so I put surfing on hold.

What’s the most fun you’ve ever had surfing? Surfing with my son, Bailey out at Rennicks when it’s 3’ to 4’ and too crowded. Where is your favorite place to surf and why? Probably straight outs and Rennicks in 2nd because I like the crowd…every body is pretty mellow.

There’s been seven shark attacks in Hawaii in 2015, with three in the month of October. One involved 25-year old surfer Colin Cook at Leftovers another, 10-year old bodyboarder Raymond Senensi at Makaha. Some attribute the increase number of attacks to the fall Tiger Sharks’ pupping period since there are more hungry sharks in the water. Some say maybe it’s El Nino and the warm water, the brown water, or a combination of the two. Take into account the highly publicized Great White shark attack on Mick Fanning in the final of the 2015 J-Bay Open, and it is no wonder surfers have been a little more apprehensive about entering the water. I’m not a shark expert, but perhaps we should look at what to do in the event of a shark attack.

Outside of surfing what do you do for fun? I love to golf and go to movies. What do you do for work? I am an U.S.P.T.A. professional and I have my own business called “Tennis advantage”. I coach a lot of tennis players, both adults and joiners on Oahu. A little about me: #1 player in Hawaii 1981. Hawaii U.S.P.T.A. Pro. player of the year, 89, 90, 91. Private coach to many junior state champions.

It is important to remember that the number of shark attacks will go up. This is a factor of more people in the water. However, experts say that the risk of shark attacks per individual will not go up, or maybe even go down because there are more people in the water. The following excerpts are from the book Shark Survival written by my partner, Sports Medicine physician and Surf Doctor, Clay Everline, MD, and Doctors Andrew Nathanson and Mark Renneker.

“Fortunately for us, sharks do not regard humans as attractive food items and attacks on surfers are extremely rare. In fact in US waters, with an estimated population of 2.5 million surfers, there are an average, of only fifteen shark attacks on surfers annually, and on average there is less than one shark-related fatality per year… 90 percent of surfers survive shark attacks, and the majority of those attacks involve only a single bite. It has been estimated that your chance of being attacked by a shark while entering North American waters is one in 5 million. You are ten times more likely to be killed by lightning.”

“Attacks are most likely to occur to isolated surfers near dawn or dusk in murky water. If a large shark is spotted, it is best to leave the water calmly and slowly, as sharks are attracted to splashing and commotion. If attacked, do not react passively; aggressively fend off the shark by striking it as hard as possible on their sensitive snout, eyes, or gills. Although many shark-repellant systems for surfers have been developed, none have proven to be practical and reliable.”

This is a cool section I call, “yes you’re supporting local” when you buy from Hawaiian South Shore. Not only because you’re buying from us a local company but because most of the brands we carry have a local rep that services us. So feel good when you buy from us, because it does come back into and support the local community.

“The victim of a shark attack should be assisted to shore immediately. Rescuers are almost never attacked. When rendering assistance, lay the victim flat with the injured body part elevated, and apply direct pressure to any area that is bleeding. This is best done using the heel of one’s palm covered with a towel or wet suit. Ten to fifteen minutes of continuous direct pressure will almost always stop bleeding, even if it is squirting out of an artery. For an extremely large bite, bigger than

of the cofounders for Vertra sunscreen and he’s been involved with so many other cool projects but I will leave that up to him to reveal all that information. Right now he is the sales representative for Vissla, which is one our best selling clothing brands in the store. It’s very comfortable and functional. The rash guards have a very good fit. The size is just in between a tight fitting and a loose fit rashguard, so it hugs the body just enough. For bigger surf I always suggest wearing one size smaller. The boardshorts are very innovative and cool. It’s made with a mixture of plastic bottles and coconut husk. The coconut husk offers the benefit of natural antimicrobial properties. So if you’re like me and you surf in the morning then place your boardshorts into the bag wet for the rest of the day, no worries because it won’t stink.

As a last resort, a surfboard leash, strap, or belt can be used as a tourniquet, but bear in mind that use of a tourniquet for more than two hours can potentially result in a loss of a limb from lack of blood flow. Any exposed organs should be covered with a clean moist towel. The victim should be transported to the nearest hospital as soon as possible. Shark bites are at high risk of infection and require professional medical attention which includes: generous irrigation of wounds, repair of tendons, nerves, and blood vessels; as well as loose closure and appropriate antibiotics.”

SURF-SURVIVAL TIPS:

Anyways this is not what the section is for, so I’ll have Keoni through the conversation we had earlier this week give you some background about himself and what he’s doing now. “As you said earlier Dave I did work with Billabong for 17-years,” Keoni said. “I saw the brand transition in 1999 and worked through some exciting times for them and the industry as a whole.”

• B e wary of surfing at dawn or dusk; sharks feed during these times so you may not be the only one on dawn patrol. • Avoid murky waters; they may mistake your hand or foot for a fish.

Following time with Billabong Keoni saw more opportunities open up in other spaces around surfing. “About two years ago I was offered an incredible opportunity to get in on the ground level of a group of brands,” Keoni said. “ in 2014 Stoke-House unlimited launched Vissla, Amuse Society and D’Blanc and along with a few other new brands changed the way retailers are looking at the surf industry landscape.” The success Far Left: David Kelly Second from right: Shane Doran Keoni has had repping these Far Right: Keoni Watson brands, especially Vissla has been incredible. His success according to him stems from lessons learned a long time ago. “I was lucky to have Rell Sunn point me in the right direction at a young age with regard to acquiring sponsors, having competitive success as as surfer and even finding opportunities in life beyond surfing.” “She showed me that you could carve out a living in the sport we loved so much with a combination of the

• A void surfing in river mouths or near sewer drains or in groups of seals or other marine mammals, particularly rookeries; sharks often feed in these areas. • A void bleeding into the water; most of a shark’s brain is devoted to smell (though it has never been shown that menstruating women are at increased risk of shark attack). • B e wary if you see schools of baitfish jumping out of the water and gulls squawking for leftovers. The big fish eat the little fish. And be wary of surfing near a floating seal or whole carcass. • Surf near other surfers, as sharks are more likely to attack isolated individuals. • I f a large shark appears, leave the water with calm slow movements – do not splash. • D o not wear shiny watches or jewelry or bright colors in the water – sharks are attracted to bright, shiny objects. • If attacked, try to repel the shark with sharp blows to the eyes, gills, or snout. right attitude and work ethic.” “These and other values were instilled in me growing up on the Westside and they are key to my success today.” Vissla has been nominated for 5 SIMA awards which will be given out at the Watermans Ball later in the year. “I Think ultimately the most rewarding part of our business is the success of our retail partners with our brands.” “While I can honestly say I’ve never worked harder in my career than I am right now to help get these brands off to such great early success, we do it for the guys and girls who live and breath the best sport on earth and I’m just as stoked now as I was when I was 11-years old just getting started as a surfer.”

The Monsta Chief came about 4-years ago from a conversation with a good customer Raul who owns a Pizza truck on the North Shore. He was picking up his Al Merrick. We were discussing the rails of some of his boards and I ask him, “don’t you want a board that has thinner rails?” His reply was “heck yeah!! all the boards I get the rails are so thick and they don’t understand, us big guys want thinner rails for better performance.”

THE REVIEW SECTION How was the Board

At the time we just started working with Proctor Surfboard and I suggested they take their best selling shortboard and blow it up..but make sure the rails are tapered and thin out the tail. I thought the big guys and even the smaller guys would that want some serious float would be stoked to ride it. In a matter of weeks the first board came in and Rual snatched it off the rack right away.

This is our Review section. I want your feedback it matters to us and it helps us let us know how we are doing. So if you purchased a board and received an email from me and you didn’t fill out the questions please help me out and fill it out. We like to use the reviews in this section and on our website. It helps others that are on the fence about getting a board.

The board is now one of Proctor’s best selling models and with an updated deep concave it’s faster and better performing than ever.

I’ve been surfing the Libtech Lost Puddle Jumper, for over a month now and I’m stoked. I usually don’t care for the rounded nose boards. One of the main reasons is when the surf gets better I like to ride a performance shortboard and when I go from a rounded nose board to a performance one I have a hard time transitioning. I end up being heavy footed on my front foot after surfing a round nose board so when I get on my shortboard I can’t turn it and end up digging the rails. But with the Puddle Jumper I haven’t had any issue transitioning, I really like the board, I can see why it’s our #1 seller. -David Kelly (owner)

Oh just in case you’re wondering Raul is 6’3 230 lbs he now rides a 6’8” X 21 7/8

Below is a review from our good customer Gary S. about his Libtech Puddle Jumper The board goes REAL good. Ran it with a set of FCS Thruster GMB’s on a kinda smallish onshore day out at the beach park. Paddles like dream probably because of all that volume this thing has. Easy to stroke into waves with this thing too. Once up, board had lot of drive, pop, and snappy-ness off the top. It even didn’t mind being put on rail either. I wanna get my quad GMB’s on there and see how that goes. Just 1 session on this thing and I like it already. - Gary S.

X 3 3/16 48L Thumb tail. With all the weight you would think the board would get totally trashed but it has heavy duty glassing so it’s been holding up. 6’6” x 21 3/4” x 3 1/8” 47L MonstaChief thumb tail...by far the best & most versatile board I’ve ever owned - Lance | 230 lb | San Clemente, CA - Proctor website.
