About Lost Surfboards Matt Biolos began shaping surfboards at Herbie Fletcher Surf Shop fresh out of high school in 1987. He shaped his first surfboard at this time and called it a "Ratz Ass" like in "I don't give s*!%." His second surfboard was labeled "Mayhem;" named after his high school punk band - obviously not taking things very seriously. This name, for better or for worse, stuck. Biolos shaped 20 Lost surfboards the first year. Not too many people were ordering surfboards from him yet, so to make money Matt Biolos continued to sand surfboards and began to paint wild designs on them and adding a handwritten Lost Surfboards logo wherever he could. Surfers like Christian Fletcher and Matt Archbold were getting painted surfboards from Matt Biolos. The Headquarter of Lost is based in San Clemente, California and is deeply rooted in the surfing and skating lifestyle of southern California. The brand is an authentic surf brand reaching over 35 countries around the world. “I Caught The Surfing Bug In The 80’s As A Skinny Young Kid…” My mom would take me to the beach as a grom and once that stoke hit, I surfed pretty much every day all day. I grew up surfing California’s point breaks in northern L.A. County, Ventura and Santa Barbara. After high school, I spent some years on the road traveling; surfing all over Australia, South Africa, Hawaii and Mexico. Shaping grew out of my love for surfing. No matter where I happened to be, when the swell dropped off, I would manage to find myself at all the back woods shaping rooms hanging out and seeing all about boards and what makes ‘em tick. I shaped my first boards in a shed in my grandpa’s back yard in 1991 and shortly after got my first job finishing off pre-shapes for McCrystal Surfboards in Oxnard, CA. I started my own label on the side in ’92 shaping boards for friends, people I surfed with and friends of friends. I was offered a job shaping full time in San Clemente with Lost Surfboards in ’94 where I would get my own shaping room and have the freedom to hand shape… as many boards as I want… and get to keep my label on the side! “Oh boy!” I thought, what could be better than that? So I packed up and moved. Working on different design ideas with Matt Biolos and shaping boards for various tour and team riders helped to hone my design and hand shaping skills… and it was a lot of fun.
New LOST Surfboards!
"Minnie Driver" (((new))) - while preparing a quiver for last months indo trip kolohe asked for “a short, fast (flat rockered) little 5 fin tube rider." I recommended the rock up, but he felt it had more tail rocker than he liked and wanted something really, really flast that he could take off extremely deep and pump through tubes from way back. We started with the 6'0" driver, took note of the nose rocker and outline measurements at 4" and 16" back from the tip, then shrunk the board to a 5'8" and lowered the nose rocker at the tip and 12" back till it matched the 4" and 16" marks from before. We widend the nose till it matched up the same way. This gave us a screaming fast low nose rocker with a forward placed outline, both attributes give tons of drive. We then rounded off the tail, but left the width at 12 inches the same. This gave us a very clean and eliptical outline that we expected would move free and easy inside the tube...The "minnie driver" performed as hoped. Interestingly enough, one of kolohe’s buddies (taylor clark) grabbed it, after it came back from indo, and used it in the us nationals event in huntington beach. He surfed it in 2' slop all the way to a second place finish in the open mens division. The board worked in everything!

A board that feeds and thrives off the bottom end of the wave spectrum. I was feeling held back a bit by the wide noses on the plank and uber plank, and wanted to make a board with more outline curve and no wings, something more eliptical. This board has a lower entry rocer than I have ever done and uses rolled belly to keep it from catching. The belly continues through the center but features a double concave sitting inside it , which creates a tri-plane hull featuring a soft chine in the rail. This feeds water through the hull and gives it a feeling closer to a concave bottom board. The tail features enough rail rocker and hip to allow aggressive direction changes in tiny surf without losing speed. I am feeling outlines that are more and more clean, with less wings and fancy, trendy tail shapes. This board showcases that concept. It's designed as a quad, but it can be made as a 5 fin as well. Dangers of Teflon When Teflon, a nonstick surface, was introduced, it was thought to revolutionize cooking. Fifty years later, it is the subject of much debate among health researchers and environmental activists. Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), an ingredient used to make polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)--the chemical in Teflon--as well as most other nonstick coatings is the controversial component. If you're buying any type of non-stick cookware, you can assume PFOA was used unless a pan's label specifically says it's made with alternative green coatings. The Dangers PTFE was picked for coating pans because it is almost completely inert. Almost. Back in 2003, it was revealed that PTFE gives off toxic fumes when heated over 500 degrees Fahrenheit, according to “How Stuff Works.” The Environmental Working Group (EWG) cited cases of PTFE fumes killing pet birds and causing flu-like symptoms in humans; this illness is known as polymer fume fever. In addition to the risk of polymer fume fever, there are also concerns over the safety of PFOA in general. According to the EPA, PFOA is ubiquitous in most Americans' blood and in the environment. Plus the substance, which has been shown to cause cancer in lab animals, remains in the human body for a very long time (some sources say 10 years). Mothers working at a Teflon plant in the 1980s also claimed that especially high PFOA exposure caused birth defects. As such, the EPA has deemed PFOA as "likely to be carcinogenic" and, in 2006, worked with eight major companies (including Teflon's maker, DuPont) to draft a plan to reduce PFOA-use by 2010 and eliminate it by 2015. However, despite these reports the EPA maintains that PTFE in nonstick cookware does not pose a risk to consumers and the American Cancer Society does not suspect Teflon to cause cancer. Should You Be Worried? The short answer is "maybe." Consumer Reports has performed real-world tests on nonstick cookware and found no significant amount of PFOA in the air after cooking. "The highest level was around 100 times lower than published animal studies suggest are levels of concern for ongoing exposure," they say. As nonstick pans age, the amount of PFOA released is even lower. It's easy to understand why Consumer Reports results are so low. The temperature at which PTFE releases toxic fumes, 500 degrees fahrenheit, is a much hotter temperature than most of us regularly cook. In fact, Treehugger.com points out that at temperatures that high, grease fires and the smoke from denatured cooking oil would be a much greater threat to your health than PFOA. Still, the EWG presents a valid argument in its tests of pre-heated pan temperatures. An empty generic nonstick pan over high heat can reach almost 700 degrees fahrenheit in as little as three minutes and Teflon pans took five minutes. If you decide to continue using non-stick cookware, you'll want to take some precautions: Pre-heat empty skillets over low-to-medium heat; do so for a couple of minutes; and avoid leaving the pan empty over the flame to prevent the release of fumes. Most experts don't recommend cooking on chipped nonstick. As we move towards the 2015 PFOA-elimination deadline and nonstick coatings continue to improve (and become even tougher), the likelihood of ingesting PFOA from nonstick coating may grow smaller.
