Everyone called it Seven Three Zero “Nana San Maru” Growing up in Okinawa was something really different. I guess the older I get the more I realized I’ve experienced things most people have never experienced or only read about in history books. One huge event that I remember to this day is July 30th, 1978, hence the Seven Three Zero.

After Japan lost the war, Okinawa was under the control of the United States. During that Mon - Sat time Japanese needed a passport to 10:30-7:00 come into Okinawa, the currency was Sun the US Dollar. Everything about 10:00-6:00 Okinawa was looking more like the Closed United States. The military built housing all around Okinawa that Christmas resembled homes New Year Day straight out of California style with Telephone huge back yards. 808 All the cars 597-9055 suddenly drove on the right side of the road now too. It’s strange, but I really didn't notice this until I visited Japan, I only knew Okinawa sales@hawaiian and I thought it was the same everywhere southshore.com and I was shocked to learn things were so different compared to the rest of Japan. I was shocked at the amount of Japanese that Parking even didn't speak English. All my relatives and Located on the others who were Okinawan all spoke just Makai side of enough English to get by. the store in May 1972, Japan took back the control Sat & Sun So of Okinawa, without switching the right of way OK to park on back to left-hand traffic due to the delays in Mauka Side the handover. One major delay was the Expo

’75. I remember several times going to Expo. It was a huge World’s Fair. The theme was oceans, and things focused on oceanographic technologies, marine life, and oceanic cultures. . Thirty-seven nations participated, along with eight domestic and three international organizations. The keynote speaker on the opening day was American author James A .Michener. The centerpiece of Expo ’75 was the Aquapolis — a floating city designed by a Japanese architect. So after this big Expo ‘75 settled down the big change in driving on the left side of the road was coming. I remember everywhere I looked new traffic lights were being erected all over the place and covers on them with the logo 730. Well, the time came at midnight we all went down to the main highway, which was about a 15 min walk from our house, we watched all the covers on the traffic lights and road signs being uncovered and it just so happened we were standing where the bus company headquarters was located. So all the new buses with doorways on the other side drove out onto the streets driving on the other side of the road. It was something to see. I remember the very next day and for several months after I swear we must have had more accidents than any other time. Cars, Bikes and Trucks make the mistake of turning onto the road ways facing the wrong direction. Can you image one day you wake up and you have to drive on the other side of the road??

Hawaiian South Shore Your Surf Boutique For the Finicky Surfer and Clothing Junkie though. I’ve been to a couple local and big surf contests, and it’s always exciting to see guys ripping different breaks around the island. I also paddle and kayak for school. I got into it

Member of the Month This month I’d like to introduce a VIP member who comes in often, his name is Roy Lim. We have a large number of members who are 35 yo and older but we are getting more and more younger members coming in so this month I wanted to interview Roy, who’s 17. I’m always impressed at the way he’s so respectful to his mother in the store. So I reached out to Roy and asked him a series of questions and asked him for some pictures. Roy Lim Age: 17 Punahou School I’ve been surfing for 5 years. I usually surf the breaks in front of the Ala Moana and Concessions areas. There's three completely different waves to choose from. So even if one spot gets too crowded I can paddle over to the next spot. When the swell picks up, I usually surf Suicides or the Hawaii Kai breaks because Concessions tends to closeout and get crowded. I haven't surfed any contests. I like to surf for recreational purposes only. I know a lot of friends that compete, and I don't think I can keep up with guys my age, I like the idea

because of surfing, I guess. I never really liked the ocean when I was young. I met someone from church that taught me how to surf at Waikiki, and picked it up from there ever since. Surfing’s got me into a lot of different water sports and activities like kayaking, paddling, bodysurfing, and free-diving. Through those sports, I have met a lot of new people and it pretty much redirected my life in the best way possible. If I were to look back on my life, I would never have guessed I would be surfing because I thought I was only capable of picking up a pen or pencil. I usually go to the Outrigger Canoe Club for food if I'm out of money, because they run on sort of a credit system so I don't have to pay for it. But when I do have a little bit of cash, I usually go Zippy’s and Pa’ina Cafe.

What To EAT? I like to eat fruits and … some vegetables that are in season. … haha LOL… I’m not much of a veggie person but I try to eat my greens. Eating things that are in season is important and to be honest, I really never gave it much thought until my wife, Keiko, said that she was thought it’s best to eat food that was in season because it is much healthier. Being in Hawaii it’s really hard to tell what’s in season. Our food come from so many different places and our seasons doesn't change as drastically like other places. I guess one way to tell is when there’s lots in stock and it’s on sale. We like to shop at a Korean Market called “Keeaumoku SuperMarket” on Keeaumoku. It’s real inexpensive and most of the fruits we get there are

local and it’s real good. The buyer for the fruits is doing an outstanding job!! I eat a lot of fruits especially in the morning. My breakfast for the past 5 years has been salad, one over med egg, plain yogurt with a fruit that’s in season. The yogurt thing I started because of my friend Marc Lambert telling me he’s been eating plain yogurt for a long time and he explained that having all the good bacteria in the system and load it every day helps the body fight any bad stuff that tries to come in. So I took his advice and it seems to work. I’m on immunosuppressant drugs and I’m not sure if it’s the yogurt that’s helping but 5 years ago before I started loading up daily with yogurt I was sick often. So I’m sticking to what seems like it is working for me. Thanks Marc…I bet you’re surprised I remember that conversation and I’m still following your suggestion.
