Wave Pool Battle Given the recent destruction in Japan, it’s hard to believe any project involving the creation of man-made waves could still be on the table - let alone three of them. Australia, America and Europe are currently squared-off in a ‘Space Race’ style battle to unlock and perfect the ultimate artificial wave for surfing. All the while keen investors from around the globe are looking on with great interest. While Australian surfboard shaper Greg Webber represents the Aussie charge with his patented wave-generating technology, it’s the emergence of surfing’s biggest player of all, with his strikingly similar - Kelly Slater Wave Company (KSWC), that has many eyebrows raised. Did the American and 10-time World Champion Kelly Slater conveniently borrow Webber’s idea? And with the sport’s biggest name behind such technology, what implications will these ‘Franken-waves’ have on the future of surfing as a sport? Despite the ‘Space Race’ comparisons, Yamba’s Greg Webber assures, “We’re not sending someone to the moon. All the science is really well proven.” Webber has been working with scientists at Australian Maritime College in Tasmania to produce a giant circular wave pool with an island in the middle around which, peel multiple, continuously breaking, waves (see artist’s impression above). The waves are generated by five hulls driven along the outer wall of the pool, displacing water in the same way that a boat generates a wake. The hulls run along standard roller coaster tracks, driven mechanically from outside the pool.
Webber says they’re now on the verge of making his grand vision a reality. “By the end of June we should be ready with a product to present to potential investors – which number over 50 at the moment, from all over the world – some are water parks, some are developers interested in a stand alone feature, some are retail orientated like malls – which have water parks within the malls. Given the university and the engineers can guarantee being able to make two metres waves – then hopefully those potential clients will be able to step over the line and start ordering.” It all started back in 2002 when Webber began experimenting with breaking waves produced by boat wake in a river. He pondered how he could capture these waves, increase their size and ride them. In April of 2003 Webber and his brother Dan lodged a Patent Application for his circular wave pool. Two months later an American named Michael Roberts lodged a patent application for something called the ‘Surfing Ring Wave Pool’ – “a circular ring wave pool having an island in the centre .. wave generators are synchronised in their action to produce waves that travel around the circular ring shaped pool in an endless loop therefore creating a travelling surfing wave that never ends.” Sound familiar? Not long after, it was rumoured a well-known pro surfer has invested in Roberts’ concept. In November 2003, Greg and his other brother Monty released a surf film featuring perfect tubing waves, created by boat waves, breaking along the bank of a river. It was then that Kelly Slater had his first contact with Webber regarding the Australian’s project – a simple email from the surfing legend conveying admiration for the idea and the film. Some half a decade later, in December 2010, Kelly Slater launched the Kelly Slater Wave Company [KSWC]. The press release stated the following: After five years of research and development, champion pro surfer
Kelly Slater has launched the Kelly Slater Wave Company [KSWC] — a company devoted to making a worldclass surfing experience accessible to the sport’s enthusiasts across the globe. KSWC’s pioneering wavegeneration and control technologies feature the world’s first natural, deep water, world-class wave. The wave is generated on the outside of a large circular pool, propagating onto an inner island where it breaks endlessly. Instantly Webber had heavyweight competition – not that he minded one little bit. “As Kelly’s (wave pool) came up we had a tripling of interest (in our product),” says Webber. “I’ve been pushing mine for quite a while and I’m a surfboard shaper and people might know me as one of the most well-known surfboard shapers, but I’m certainly no Kelly Slater. When he (Slater) came on board there was a huge jump in interest by the money market and the developers – a huge jump in interest in general – so he’s added value to our company indirectly by just creating viability and credibility for our industry.” When asked whether he thought Slater had copied his cylindrical wave pool idea, Webber said, “It’s possible. Even Kelly himself said to me in an email – “wow I loved your videos!” - so I know he’s seen this kind of stuff before. Maybe he’s been secretly experimenting in the same realm, but I’ve made it publically known that I’ve been doing this kind of experimentation. We made a film about it so most of the surfing world has seen what we’ve been doing as a system of generating an unending wave. I don’t want to say that he copied me completely – ‘cause I don’t know – he could have come up with these things – he has a patent, I have a patent, they’ve got different dates so if anyone wants to look up who’s date was first – that will put some relevance on it all.” Read more on next page...
Wave Pool Battle Cont... At the time of publishing, the Kelly Slater Wave Company could not be contacted. Their website remains dormant and incomplete and has-done since it’s launch in December – suggesting KSWC is a ways behind the progress of Webber’s product. “I’ve only seen Kelly’s teaser videos, but I’m guessing he’s going to go down the same pathway as we have,” says Webber. “I really have no idea what level they’re at. Look, he’ll get the right people around him. If Kelly’s got the same mode (as me) that’s fine – we’ll be in competition but there’s plenty of market out there.” Traditional wave pools have failed in the past due to short-lived inferior waves and high running costs, in addition to there not being enough waves to go round and high charges to the user. “The circular wave action is the most viable business model because you can have numerous people riding several continuous waves at one time,” says Webber. “Models in the past have failed because if you don’t have a lot of waves you’ve got to charge a lot per unit per ride. With my cylindrical model you can give 2000 people 10-12 perfect 30second waves in a day - that’s how it will be a money-maker.” Slater and Webbers’ circular systems aside, there has recently been a third wave-pool player to enter the market. Just last month, Europe threw it’s hat in the ring with something called Wavegarden. Wavegarden is a company born out of San Sebastian in Spain that promises customers an ability to create new surf destinations anywhere in the world, regardless of how near or far from the ocean they are. They just need a body of water or lake that is at least 150m by 50m. In the case of Wavegarden, there are few similarities to Webber’s design. For starters the waves run in the one same direction and not in a continuous circular motion, plus Wavegarden requires an existing body of water to work with. We are a technology
company that develops and sells 20-20 Cricket. The Webster’s Dictionary wave generators. We will not run defines surfing as, “Riding the waves of any facilities ourselves,” explained the sea with a surfboard.” Sure these Wavegarden Spokesperson, Felip wave pools will still use surfboards, Verger, yesterday. but without the sea, can it really still be Webber has noted differences called surfing? Either way, a professional in the European model. “Wavegarden surfing competition is certainly not have a very different system. It sees a something you ever expected could be big hydraulic jump at the back of the held in a shopping mall. wave, which sends a mass of whitewater following after the wave. This - Michael Bellamy means a significant settling time after each wave – which can potentially decrease the amount of waves being ridden in a given time” Even still, Wavegarden is the only one of the three groups to have proper footage released of someone actually surfing their model – albeit at this stage the waves in their video are still at the testing stage and are not as WAVES OF THE FUTURE: An artist's big as is planned by the company. impression of Greg Webber's wave pool. Whether we like it or not, wave pool technology is at our doorstep. So what impact will this technology have on surfing as a sport? Webber believes it will revolutionise competitive surfing. “Competing will be really exciting because it will be all down to the manoeuvrers and the performance of the surfer as opposed to waveselection or whether one guy caught the better waves. Too many heats have been won and lost on the basis of the other guy not getting enough Familiar: Kelly Slater's proposed wave pool. good waves – the uniformity and regularity of my waves will change the way we compete.” Slater revealed his thoughts on the subject in April of 2009 when he told America’s ESPN, “we need to make wave pools good enough to compete in. Eventually, I’d love to see a Tour (World Tour of Surfing) that incorporates a couple of stops with these waves.” It’s hard to argue the point with the greatest surfer to ever wax up a board, but isn’t all this wave pool stuff just a novelty sideshow to the actually sport? Sadly for the purists, I Wavegarden wave pool believe the same thing we said about
Hawaii Could See Debris From Japan In 18 Months....
It should be noted that the North Pacific Subtropical High is not a stationary area, but one that moves and changes. This area is defined by the NOAA National Weather Service as “a semi-permanent, subtropical area of high pressure in the North Pacific Ocean. It is strongest in the Northern Hemispheric summer and is displaced towards the equator during the winter when the Aleutian Low becomes more dominant. Comparable systems are the Azores High and the Bermuda High.” The High is not a stationary area, but one that rotates, moves, and changes. Marine debris is a historical problem that continues to grow. The world’s oceans and waterways are constantly polluted with a wide variety of marine debris ranging from soda cans and plastic bags to derelict fishing gear and abandoned vessels. Many animals, such as sea turtles, seabirds, and marine mammals, have been known to ingest marine debris, which may lead to loss of nutrition, internal injury, intestinal blockage, starvation, and even death.
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 19 March, 2011 : - - It is uncertain how much debris from the devastating earthquake & tsunami in Japan will reach Hawaiian shores, but University of Hawaii scientists have created models tht predict the first waves of debris to arrive in 18 months. The “garbage patch,” as referred to in the media, is an area of marine debris concentration in the North Pacific Ocean. The name “garbage patch” has led many to believe that this area is a large and continuous patch of easily visible marine debris items such as bottles and other litter—akin to a literal blanket of trash that should be visible with satellite or aerial photographs. This is simply not true. While litter items can be found in this area, along with other debris such as derelict fishing nets, much of the debris mentioned in the media these days refers to small bits of floatable plastic debris. These plastic pieces are quite small and not immediately evident to the naked eye. Eastern Pacific garbage patch - Concentrations of marine debris have been noted in an area midway between Hawai‘i and California within the North Pacific Subtropical High, an area between Hawaii and California. Due to limited marine debris samples collected in the Pacific it is still difficult to predict its exact content, size, and location. However, marine debris has been quantified in higher concentrations in the calm center of this high-pressure zone compared to areas outside this zone.
Derelict fishing gear, such as fishing nets and lines, poses entanglement hazards for marine life, can smother the living substrate upon which it settles, and can serve as a vector for the international concern not only because it washes up on beaches and shorelines worldwide, but also because debris can be transferred from one country to another via ocean currents and because it impacts commercial fisheries throughout the world. International cooperation is needed to create public awareness while developing ways to decrease the amount of debris in oceans around the globe. The Fifth International Marine Debris Conference will take place March 20-25, 2011, in Honolulu, Hawaii. NOAAand the United Nations Environment Programme are co-organizers of the conference, which will bring together international marine debris researchers, natural resource managers, policy makers, industry representatives, and the nongovernmental community. This conference will highlight research advances, allow sharing of strategies and best practices to assess, reduce, and prevent the impacts of marine debris, and provide an opportunity for the development of specific bilateral or multi-country strategies. Cooperation and coordination among many countries was fostered through four international marine debris conferences held between 1984 and 2000, as well as through smaller international agreements, meetings, and workshops. Each conference developed a suite of recommendations on how to move forward. Some recommendations were implemented, and many others showed up repeatedly at multiple conferences and meetings over the course of the past 25 years. This conference will allow the sharing of information on the implementation, progress, and obstacles to these recommendations and reviewing their effectiveness.

The History Of About Stewart Surfboards Bill Stewart, the true father of the modern longboard, founded Stewart Surfboards over 30 years ago in a tiny shop in Laguna Beach, California. Originally offering a small selection of custom boards and hand-painted airbrushed hats, the business quickly grew and moved to San Clemente. At that time, Stewart boards were best known for their eye-popping airbrush artwork, hand-painted by Bill himself. Over the years, Stewart Surfboards has become synonymous with high-quality, hand-crafted custom boards, especially performance longboards. Stewart boards have been seen on TV and in movies, such as “The Heartbreak Kid”, “The Net”, the MTV Beach House, “Vegas” and many more. CNN commemorated the end of the Cold War in 1990 by presenting Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev with a Stewart Surfboard decorated with airbrushed Soviet and American flags. As the exposure and world-wide presence has grown, so has the Stewart product line-up, which now includes a full range of boards including shortboards, the world-famous Hydro Hull longboard and the revolutionary new S-Winger as well as apparel, hats, mugs and more. Handmade in the San Clemente, California headquarters, custom polyester and E-Type Stewart boards offer the ultimate performance for surfers of all levels. And a Thermal Epoxy Compression (T.E.C.) version of the Stewart lineup is also available through Boardworks. About Bill Stewart – Surfer/ Artist / Shaper For over four decades Bill Stewart has been creating one of a kind custom surfboards. An early backer of the longboard resurrection, Bill is the inventor of the 2+1 fin configuration and Hydro Hull beveled rail, as well as co-inventor of the Future Fins System box.
Born in 1951 in Bowling Green, Kentucky, Stewart grew up in Hollywood, Florida where he began surfing in 1963. He quickly realized that he could combine his passion for surfing with his artistic talents and started shaping boards in 1967. In search of better waves, Bill moved to Southern California in 1971 and started working for Hobie, Rick James and South Shore. After gaining some much-needed knowledge and experience behind a planer, Bill opened Stewart Surfboards in Laguna Beach in 1978. Bill was the second person to ever airbrush on a surfboard and was voted Best Airbrusher by Surfer Magazine in 1980. In 1984, Stewart developed the Hydro Hull, a double concave design he used on longboards and shortboards. The same year he invented the 2+1 tri-fin configuration, the standard in performance longboards. In 1994, Office Depot featured Bill and Stewart Surfboards in a national TV ad, with shots of Stewart surfing at San Onofre, which aired during 60 Minutes, the NFL playoffs and after the Super Bowl. Late in 2008, Stewart developed the S-Winger, a 5 fin double wing pin shortboard. After the immediate success of the S-Winger, the LSW Longboard S-Winger was developed and has become the most anticipated board that Stewart has released to date. No doubt Bill is cooking up some more great ideas right now. Stay tuned for the latest inventions and innovations.
