Your Royalty Reward Member Newsletter Jan 2014 Welcome to 2014, I can’t believe it flew by so fast, I hope you had a good New Years Celebration. Usually during the winter months just about everyone battles a cold at least once. How do you battle your cold? I am real susceptible to colds because I have to take immunosuppressants so my body does not attack the kidney my father donated to me Over time I figure out a couple of ways to keep the bug away with out taking any more meds than I have to. Every year my Nephrologist suggests I get a flu shot, but for the past 5 years I opted out. I personally, don’t think getting a flu shot with a strain that is supposed to be prevalent on the Mainland is going to help me here in Hawaii. We have people from all over the world that visit the store, Japan, Korea, Tahiti, Australia and Europe, so you can image all the cold virus strains that we may be exposed to. When I feel the slightest sore throat, that very night I eat a super hearty meal that includes lots of roasted or minced garlic. Usually I eat a Japanese meal called “Nabe”, its a stew and soup served during the colder seasons. In Japan, nabe is kept hot at the dining table by portable stoves. The dish is frequently cooked at the table, and the diners can pick the cooked ingredients they want from the pot. It is either eaten with the broth or with a dip. I add minced garlic to my dip. Or I have Yakiniku Korean style and on the open flame I place tin foil in a shape of a cup. In the cup is sesame oil with garlic cloves. Once the oil boils and the garlic gets soft we eat it. The next day usually I’m over my sore throat and I’m all good to go. Hopefully these suggestions will help you too. Have an Awesome 2014 and I am looking forward to seeing you in the water or in the store. David Kelly

Are you Down sizing your board?
More people now than ever are going smaller and smaller, they want maneuverability with out sacrificing paddling power. No matter what, when you down size you’ll have to paddle a little harder but if you’re able to find a board with good volume, I’m sure you’ll have a lot more fun when the surf is good. When we help people down size one of the things that we discuss is volume. Most boards now a days have volume written somewhere on the board, usually right after the dimensions of the board. This really makes it so much easier to help people choose the right board, It’s not 100% perfect so make sure you don’t just rely on volume alone, that’s because not all boards are made the same. *Low Volume, with narrow Outline, thin Nose, Tail and Low rails. *For Advanced to Pro Surfer *Good for reef and beach break, where you don’t have to do a lot of paddling
HOW VOLUME IS CALCULATED Volume calculations comes from the Software program most shapers use. It measures the displacement volume and surface area. You can not get the volume by the sum of the Length x Width x Thickness. I found something online that shows three different boards that are all the same dimensions but have different volume.
HOW CONSTRUCTION EFFECT FLOATATION *StandardVolume, Medium Rails, Std Board construction methods will give you different floatation. EPS/Epoxy boards can have 15% - 30% Outline & everyday Rocker more flotation with the same volume and *Advanced riders choice *Best choice for all round everyday high displacement as a PU Style board. So the volume chart I have is just a recommendation base on PU performance surfing boards.
*High Volume, wide Outline, full Rail with Thicker nose & Tail. *For Beginner & average Surfers *Best for small to average surf
This is an example of how boards have the dimensions and volume. The volume on this board is 31.3 liters.

More New Styles and Awesome Reviews from our Local Customers Thanks to all of the reviews that we received for the Straw Hat Wetsuits we decided to expand the line. Not only do we have the all Smooth Skin Wetsuits that cut the wind, but now we have the Neoprene Jersey type suits, and yes these are made in japan also! The neoprene is lighter than the ones made in Taiwan or China. They don’t absorb water like other suits, so it keeps the suit light when you’re in the water and they dry super fast. They come in the popular front zip and pull over type suits. The front zip suits come with a board short connector so it wont ride up when you get tossed in the surf, and they all have an extra soft rubber nonskid on the insides of the sleeves, so the sleeves stay put. We also now have ladies LongSleeve Spring Suits that have a smooth skin top to cut the wind and neoprene bottoms for max stretch.
This suit had the softest feel ever. Super warm in the coldest wind and water. Broken in feel from day one! Little expensive but worth every penny! Plus had a few issues with the seam at first but ( it think was probably my fault) when I brought the suit back they repaired it at no charge. ( talk about customer service) If you can buy the best (Strawhat) I am sold. - Marcus O Don’t let the name fool you. Fits snug to minimize cold water intrusion. No wrinkles or pinch points. Keeps my surfing SMOOTH! - Mahalo, Morris M I love my zipper-front, long-sleeve wetsuit top. Its a little tight in the waist, buts thats more because I’m a little wide in the waist rather than any defect on the top. I also like to wear it with the zipper open if I get too warm while I’m out. - Anna M It is the best wetsuit ever. No break-in period, super comfortable, very warm and High Quality. You get what you pay for and then some. I stay out longer with no rash problems. Best warranty ever, hands down. Thanks Guys, - Elton Y The Straw Hat is the best surfing wetsuit I have ever bought. No chafing, no binding (especially under the arms). Makes paddling much easier. At first I was worried about the front zipper, but you can’t even feel it when paddling! Plenty of room at the throat area. Nice work South Shore! - Thomas K I would say, ‘freeze your butt dude, cause it keeps me warm on the coldest mornings!’ Thanks for the tips, guess I gotta take it out of the car. - Sal P 320 Ward Ave Tel (808) 597-9055 Open: Mon - Sat 10:30-7:00 / Sun 10-6

The 7 natural minerals and gemstones including Germanium and Tourmaline are unique in their ability to generate anions (negative ions) without an external power source. “Generally speaking, negative ions increase the flow of oxygen to the brain; resulting in higher alertness, decreased drowsiness, and more mental energy," says Pierce J. Howard, PhD, author of The Owners Manual for the Brain: Everyday Applications from Mind Brain. Columbia University studies of people with winter and chronic depression show that negative ions relieve depression as much as antidepressants -Source - WebMD
