Closed Christmas ThanksGiving New Year Day

Why am I doing what I’m doing now? Ever since I can remember, my father told me to work hard and save money for retirement. He always preached to me to do what ever it takes to make it. He would often tell me stories about how he had to take care of his three younger sisters and his mother growing up. Before school he did a paper route with over 200 customers. Growing up in Syracuse. N.Y. meant working the paper route even in snow storms only to come home and have to shovel more snow! When he finally got his license, he found more work parking cars at night. Although I greatly admire my father, I never really wanted to work for someone else like he did. I think my greatest inspiration and reason why I wanted to pursue working for myself was because of my Oba (Grandmother).

Telephone

My Oba had to look out for her entire family as my grandfather passed away during the war. This included taking care of 5 kids on her own! She didn't want handouts and she understood that working at a regular day job would not make ends meet. She knew she needed to do things on her own. One of the first successful businesses that she set up was selling Email used clothing. She would gather unwanted clothing from military Sales@ personnel, wash it in boiling water to kill any bacteria, iron them and Hawaiian SouthShore.com re-sell them on the street corner. Eventually she made enough money to open a used clothing store in Naha City. This slowly expanded and eventually she was providing uniforms to construction companies to rebuild after the war. Her next logical step was to open a hardware store to supply these Parking working workers with not only clothing, but tools and supplies as well! She understood what the needs of the Located Makai community where and she responded the best she could to meet them. It still blows my mind that women side of the during those days would even think about opening a hardware store. When I heard this story I was really impressed with her foresight and hard work. store Sat & Sun Now that I’m in my 19th year of business I really believe that she was the greatest inspiration and drive OK to park on for me to do what I’m doing now. Although I’ve accomplished far less in life compared to what she did, Mauka Side she was a true role model of entrepreneurship; taking care of business, family and community.

Member of the Month Our member of the month is a real cool person who has been a Royalty Rewards member for only a short while. Although he visits the store often, he’s a really quiet person so I was surprised and stoked he let me interview him. What inspired you to start surfing and when did you start? I grew up in the ocean and started body boarding when I was really young. Around 2003/2004 all my friends started surfing so I borrowed a board and fell in love. Where do you usually surf? Hmm ... pretty much everywhere: Haleiwa, Chuns, Lanis, Diamond Head, Kaisers and Tracks. What are other hobbies besides surfing? Cars, hiking, volleyball Where do you usually eat after surf? Poke Bowls are usually my post-surf food favorite. That, or Avocado burgers at Teddy’s. What do you do for work? Satellite communications. Anything you want to add? Can't think of anything, lol! 320 Ward Ave Tel (808) 597-9055 Open: Mon - Sat 10:30-7:00 / Sun 10-6 www.hawaiiansouthshore.com

How to Reduce Your Dislocated Shoulder in the Surf

During the 1st round of the 2013 Pipe Masters, ASP pro surfer Kieren Perrow was navigating a Backdoor Barrel, the foam ball caught up with him, and the wave pulled his arm into an abducted and externally rotated position, dislocating his right shoulder. In extreme pain, he needed help from the lifeguard rescue crew for assistance onto shore where the medical team of Dr. Leland Dao, reduced his shoulder. Unfortunately, this would be his last wave in his ASP career. Most of us will not have the luxury of having a Jet ski team, with the best lifeguards on the planet, and a great medical team on shore to boot to provide care when a shoulder dislocation occurs in the surf. The shoulder dislocates most commonly in an anterior-inferior position, when the shoulder violently gets pulled into an abducted and externally rotated position (with the arm held in a position as if waving to say hi). As in Kieren’s case, his arm got pulled into this position with the force of the wave, which can happen sometimes even with dragging the arm deeply in a powerful wave. Sometimes this will happen when holding onto the board, and the board gets away from the surfer by the force of the wave during a duck dive. With the shoulder dislocated, it becomes very difficult to swim or paddle with the use of one arm. There is a simple reduction maneuver that you can do should you get in this situation. The Boss-Holzach-Matter self-reduction method can be used in the water to put your shoulder back into place. This is best done immediately before the shoulder muscles go into spasm. Grab the same side knee as the dislocated shoulder with your hands clasped on your knee, bent past 90°. While extending the head and back backwards, pull the shoulders down with your knee. The traction created will usually reduce the shoulder back into its socket. A shoulder dislocation will often tear the labrum, requiring surgical intervention to prevent re-dislocations of the shoulder, as in Kieren Perrow’s case. The re-dislocation rate approaches as high as 90% in patients less than 20 years of age. It is important to see an orthopaedic surgeon should a shoulder dislocation occur. NEW at Hawaiian South Shore Skinny Coconut Oil Metabolism Due to its high concentration of MCFAs, Skinny speeds up metabolism. Because they are so easily digested, MCFAs are immediately converted to energy, helping maintain a healthy weight. When looking at cultures that eat a coconut-rich diet, we find they are lean and obesity is rare. Even using coconut oil instead of unsaturated oils, such as corn, soy, bean, and canola can help aid in weight loss.

Brain Clarity

Coconut oil provides an alternative fuel to glucose for the brain. This fuel, known as ketones, encourages the healthy execution of important cerebral tasks. Ketones are highly neuro-protective, which leads to improved memory, cognition and attention. Ketones may also help curb cognitive decline in old age.

Immune System

Skinny is the earth’s richest source of a special fat called lauric acid. Also found in a mother’s milk, lauric acid helps form the immune system and protects the health of newborns. Replacing processed vegetable oils with MCFA-rich coconut oil promotes lifelong healthy immune function. This nutritious MCFA is found in infant formulas, tube feedings, and is commonly used by physicians to help patients obtain optimal health. Heart Health Containing greater than 50% lauric acid, Skinny promotes a healthy cardiovascular system. The healthy saturated fat content has shown to protect heart cells, improve the function of the thyroid and help normalize cholesterol levels.

Blood Sugar

MCFAs in Skinny help maintain healthy insulin and blood sugar levels. Processed quickly by the liver, Skinny provides natural, long lasting energy and is much more effective than sugars, grains, and carbohydrates.
