Are They Over Medicating?

Mon - Sat 10:30-7:00
 Sun 10:00-6:00

The older I get the more the doctors want to put me on medication and I refuse to take anything I don’t have to. My father whom I think is pretty health is in his 70's, plays racquetball an activity he's been playing for 30-years and was Far East Champion back in the day. He also still carries and Closed walks all 18 holes when he plays golf, was getting over Christmas medicated. It started out with high blood pressure followed by all ThanksGiving kinds of stuff. The doc gave him meds for all of it. Then he New Year Day started to feel ill and they said it’s a side effect on one med and suggested he take something to combat that. Telephone He had a long talk with the doc and totally stopped his meds and started to really eat 808 healthy and now I'm stoked to say that he is on a very small dose of high blood pressure 597-9055 meds. As most of you may know, I've had a kidney transplant and I have to take all kinds of Email meds but my doc wanted to me to take additional meds to combat an issue that was Sales@ arising from one of the meds and I refused to take additional meds. So I suggest we Hawaiian SouthShore.com lower the one that was causing the issue and I promised to eat better. After 6 months…I was all good. Believe me I am not a going extreme on healthy food but I believe a few Parking things that I do that has helped me is eat a solid health Breakfast every morning, and Located Makai eat sensible at night. side of the Oh one thing that I recently started to eat every night is "Natto" If you don’t know what Natto is, it's fermented soy beans. You can purchase it at most Japanese grocery store Sat & Sun stores here in Hawaii. OK to park on I started eating it religiously after my friends father was diagnosed with diabetes. He started eating "Natto" and after six months of eating at the swelling went down . So now Mauka Side everyone in the family eats it on a regular basis. Member of the Month Lisa Senaga This months member of the month is Lisa Senaga. Her husband comes in often to buy a gift for her and I see her often surfing Kewalo’s. Always laughing and smiling. She’s one of those people you look forward to seeing in the water because of the awesome positive vibes. Q: How long have you been surfing and where do you like to usually surf? A: I started surfing after high school, I like surfing at "benches" aka shallows. Q: What other hobbies do you like or what is something new that you just started doing. A: I love outdoor activities such as hiking. However the ages of my children are wide spread that their activities are my activities. Q: Anything you want to add? A: When I was a single parent I wanted to teach Keoki how to surf but it was hard by myself. He must've been around 8 years old and I used to take him to Waikiki. Afterwards we would head it to eat at Rainbow Drive Inn and share a hamburger steak. Then as a reward I would go to Dunkin Donuts and he was able to pick one or two donut holes (25 cent one) depending how well he surfed. Dunkin donuts is where the new big Safeway is on Kapahulu. This was a weekly ritual for us. Now that my husband Gary and I’s 5-kids are getting older we are busy in soccer, flag football, baseball, and hula. Trying to juggle all their practice and game schedules is a challenge but we somehow survive and still make time to SURF! 320 Ward Ave Tel (808) 597-9055 Open: Mon - Sat 10:30-7:00 / Sun 10-6 www.hawaiiansouthshore.com

Sports Medicine Fellowship Trained Orthopaedic Surgeon at Straub Clinic and Hospital 2014 ASP/Triple Crown Orthopaedic ConsultantThis month will be a plea to surfers to maintain your health, get regular check-ups, and if you don’t have medical insurance, please get some. In September of 2013, I was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. I had an enlarged lymph node on my neck which seemed to start after I had a prolonged cold. I let it go for about a year, thinking it was similar to a lymph node I had on my neck in 2005, that was biopsied, and turned out to be benign. Although I had no symptoms, the lymph node didn’t go away, and so I finally had it biopsied. It turned out to be cancer. Fortunately, we caught it early. Had I waited any longer, it may have metastasized to vital organs, and maybe I would not be alive to write this column today. After chemotherapy and radiation treatment, I am currently in complete remission… and surfing again. (I adopted the bald look after losing all of my hair from chemotherapy, and not to look like David Kelly). A lot of our friends have not fared as well. Take Buttons Kaluhiokalani who recently passed from Lung Cancer. As Surfers, we tend to think of ourselves as invincible, and lead our lives day to day, not prepared for when a rainy day might come. There are quite a few professional surfers, who perhaps are not in the top 34 and don’t have medical insurance. I can tell you that Surfers can and will get hurt, or sick. We are also not invincible, and may even get cancer or other medical problems. I think in general, as a group of people, we surfers are living healthier. But we do tend to treat ourselves, or neglect injuries or medical issues that we might attribute to being “minor”. I encourage you all to take care of your bodies. When you get a reef cut, treat it and clean it, and consider seeking medical attention, so that it doesn’t become a serious infection. Have your MCL injury checked out. Get that lump assessed. Get that shoulder fixed. The bottom line is, if you aren’t healthy, you can’t surf. And many of us feel that if you can’t surf, you really aren’t living. As former World Champion Dino Miranda once told me, “Doc, you saved my life. Thank you for fixing my ankle.” The bottom line is, if you aren’t healthy, you can’t surf. And many of us feel that if you can’t surf, you really aren’t living.

Surf Board Construction Is EPS Stronger? I get this question a lot especially when people are ordering a custom order board. The Short answer, hand shaped Epoxy boards are not as strong as traditional fiberglass boards. The reason why people think epoxy board are indestructible is because they associate epoxy boards to“Surftech” and “Board Works.” These boards use PVC material for strength and that’s one of the reasons for their plastic feel and look. The Epoxy board at look like a traditional foam board pressure dings easier because the foam is less dense and that’s why the board is lighter. It’s mostly just cosmetics the pressure dings you get do not effect the performance. Regular foam boards are usually heavier and don't pressure ding as easy because the foam is denser. Personally I like to surf Regular foam boards because of the weight. The weight helps the board glide and on windy days and offers better control. But…I recently purchased a 5’10” Hayden epoxy board and I rode it on this last swell with winds whipping at 25-30 and it handled the surf. Im still fence…once I get back on a poly board, a Pyzel, I’ll have a better idea if I like my New Hayden Epoxy “Love Buzz” model. 320 Ward Ave Tel (808) 597-9055 Open: Mon - Sat 10:30-7:00 / Sun 10-6 www.hawaiiansouthshore.com

Who is Access Surf? In 2006 when Mark Marble, Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist, would ask his patients who were suffering from an illness or had a disability if they go to the beach and he would get a heart breaking response. “I would give anything to go back in the water but its too hard on my family so I stay home. It has been years since I have been in the water.” As a waterman Mark realized this was the sad reality for many people with a disability and that is when he decided make a difference. Along with the help of some other therapists, doctors and surfers volunteering he set a goal to find the funding to start AccesSurf. Nine years later AccesSurf has grown with the demand to continue to offer their free programs to anyone with a physical or cognitive disability to enjoy Hawaii’s greatest resource. AccesSurf has become more than just about surfing, it has created a community of people passionate about sharing the healing power and freedom of the ocean. It is best described by an AccesSurf participant who once told Mark when expressing his gratitude for the ‘Day at the Beach’ days what AccesSurf means to him “I come to AccesSurf to recharge my batteries and see my friends. It's the one time of the month I can just be at the beach and in the ocean, out of my chair. Being in the ocean is the ultimate feeling of being alive”
