I learned it cutting sugar cane
Page 1 Sugar Cane
I spent most of my days growing up in Okinawa. Most of my relatives are farmers and every year from February thru March it was harvest time for sugar cane. So it was pretty much a requirement that we all pitch in and help.

My Grandfather was always the first in the field, usually at the crack of dawn. Then the rest of us showed up about an hour or so later. Most rode jeeps or trucks to the site, but I liked to ride the tractor with my uncle. It made me feel like I was really heading out to do some farming … haha!

We’d all use a Kama (sickle) to cut the cane, then stack and tie them into bundles which can weight up to 45 pounds. My uncle would purposely build the bundles up and make me haul them to the street. He would always say “good for you, you need to build muscles”. He would say that a lot because I was a skinny 11-year-old kid with nothing but skin and bones, but he would also say work slow and steady so you can work all day.
The cool thing about the sugar cane harvest is that everyone in the village would help each other out. At the beginning of harvest season my uncles would meet at the Kominkan (citizen’s public hall ) to discuss who’s farm to tackle Email first. I totally love this style as it kept the community tight. No one was left out sales@hawaiian no matter what kind of past tensions were brewing. Work is work and other southshore.com personal things were set to the side. 808 597-9055
I guess now that I’m getting older and less selfish I am starting to remember the community’s sense of Located on the taking care of one another. Makai side of I’m blessed to have moved to the store Hawaii and be able to make a Sat & Sun small difference in the OK to park on community. Mauka Side

Member of the Month What inspired you to start surfing and when was it? This surfing bug started circa 1982 because the older kids made it look and sound like so much fun! My best friend and I borrowed some boards that were from the early 70’s, paddled out at Empty Lots in Ewa Beach and I haven’t stopped since. Where do you usually surf? I normally surf the early mornings at Oneula Beach Park or more commonly known as Hau Bush in Ewa Beach. But every once in a while I’ll go to other spots around the island with friends. What are your hobbies, what are you into right now? Surfing is what I really love to do as far as a hobby, but I love to spend time with my family, which is my number one priority. My other interests are cool cars, building up my quiver of surfboards and I also love to travel with my wife, Glenda, and my kids, Dorian, Stryder, and Sienna. After surfing where do you like to eat? I actually like to eat at home after a surf session. I usually surf very early on the weekends for about 2 hours then go straight home because by 0830 to 0900, my wife usually has a big breakfast already made. What do you do for work? I am a proud member of the Hawaii Army National Guard located on Wheeler Army Airfield where I am the Quality Control Supervisor. I supervise 2 CH-47F Chinook Maintenance Test Pilots and 3 Helicopter Technical Inspectors. I am also a UH-60M Blackhawk Instructor Pilot and Maintenance Test Pilot. What is a typical day for you? A typical day for me during the week is a 9-hour work day, get home and watch the evening news, help the kids with their homework, eat dinner, and go to bed at around 2230. A typical day for me during the weekends starts with getting to the beach before the sun comes up to be one of the first guys in the water, surf for about 2 hours, go home and eat breakfast, take the kids to where they need to go for their activities, and go shopping with the wife. Anything you want to add? I have been coming to Hawaiian South Shore for years to buy surf accessories. Their products and customer service have always been and still remain top notch. David and his staff are so friendly and always willing to help you with your surfing needs. When I am in town, I also like to just stop in to say “Hi” and browse around to see what kind of new boards they have on hand. This past December I stopped in to the store and saw a board that I just needed to have. It was a 9’0” x 24.5” x 3.5” Stewart Redline 11 model made with EPS foam. I thought that those dimensions suited my weight andstyle perfectly. As I handled the board, I was floored at how light it was! After minutes of drooling over the board, I actually left the shop without the board. On the drive home to Ewa Beach, all I could think about was the Stewart Redline 11. When I got home, I told my wife about the board and how much I really wanted it. With the limited space we have at our rental, she still gave me the OK to get it. She and I returned later that afternoon to buy the board before going Christmas shopping at Ala Moana. I was very anxious to ride this board and when I did, this board did not disappoint. I was impressed with how well the board paddles, but what really got my attention is how maneuverable it is. This thing turns like no other board that I own. This board, by far, is a real gem and one of my very favorites. I highly recommend getting a Stewart Redline 11 and all of your surf gear from David and his friendly staff at Hawaiian South Shore. 320 Ward Ave Tel (808) 597-9055 Open: Mon - Sat 10:30-7:00 / Sun 10-6 www.hawaiiansouthshore.com

Proper Posture for the Surfer By Spencer Chang, MD Sports Medicine Fellowship Trained Orthopedic Surgeon at Straub Clinic and Hospital 2014 ASP/Triple Crown Orthopedic Consultant
Last month we discussed how it is important to maintain your shoulder flexibility to prevent from developing capsulitis of the shoulder, and resultant pain. As mentioned, most of the “impingement” type of pain that surfers experience can be related to having tight shoulders, and simple stretches can really help. However, the tightness often goes hand in hand with improper posture, and the lack of mobility of the shoulder girdle. The shoulder girdle moves at the shoulder blade (scapula) and glenohumeral (ball and socket) part of the joint. Because there is a bone (the acromion) that lies over the rotator cuff, tendons between the ball of the shoulder, improper posture, and tightness in the shoulder can result in pinching of the rotator cuff, which is commonly know as impingement. A hunched over posture often results in tightness in the pectoralis minor, and protraction of the scapula, where the shoulders sit more forward. Certain muscles like the rhomboids and serratus anterior muscles are relatively inactivated and the scapula is not well stabilized. As a consequence, the scapular movement and glenohumeral joint movement are not well coordinated, and the lack of proper shoulder movement can result in impingement. To put it simply, if your posture is bad, your shoulder will often hurt in overhead sports like surfing. Sometimes this requires learning better posture through physical therapy, working through a problem called “scapular dyskinesia.” Chiropractor extraordinaire, Dr. Tim Brown of Intelliskin has developed a compression shirt, which improves your posture by retracting the scapula into proper position. The Intelliskin apparel have been used by Olympians, NFL players, golf and baseball pros, as well as professional surfers. Pros like Kelly Slater, Occy, Lisa Andersen, Layne Beachley, Mason, Coco, Michael, and Derek Ho have all used the IntelliSkin apparel to help maintain proper shoulder posture while surfing.
