Happy Valentine’s Day! Here in the US, the holiday is usually associated with romance. Both men and women give each other gifts and enjoy an evening out. In Japan, women give the men chocolate and a range of other gifts. The chocolate gifts are divided into three types: Giri Choco (obligatory chocolate), Honmei Choco (chocolate for the man she is serious about), and Tomo Choco (for friends). Giri Choco is given to a woman’s superiors at work, and to other male co-workers. It is not unusual for a woman to buy 20 to 30 boxes of this type of chocolate for distribution around the office. Tomo Choco is a relatively new concept. A woman will typically purchase boxes of Giri Choco in the couple hundred-yen range. Expensive boxes are reserved for the Honmei Choco and other gifts like a necktie for her “special someone. For her female friends, she generally chooses something in the medium price range that she would enjoy eating herself. One month after Valentine’s Day, right on March 14, is White Day. The reverse happens on this day, and men who received Honmei Choco or Giri Choco on Valentine's Day are expected to return the favor by giving gifts of their own. Popular gifts include cookies, jewelry, white chocolate, white lingerie, and marshmallows. Sometimes the term sanbai gaeshi is used to describe the general rule for men that the return gift should be about worth three times as much as the Valentine’s gift. Haha — I bet you thought the men always have it good in Japan. In 1977, a Fukuoka-based confectionery company called Ishimuramanseido marketed marshmallows to men on March 14, and called the day “Marshmallow Day. Then, in ’78, the National Confectionery Industry Association said that men should do something nice for the women who gave them chocolate and other gifts on Valentine’s Day — and so began the sanbai gaeshi gift giving. Eventually, this practice spread to the neighboring East Asian countries of South Korea, China, and Taiwan. In those cultures, White Day is for the most part observed in the same manner. Happy Valentine’s Day!!! DO YOU WANT A FREE HAWAIIAN SOUTH SHORE T-SHIRT? We want to give you a HSS Tee, but we want some love back, so here’s what we came up with. Buy a HSS T-shirt, take a picture of yourself in the tee, and we will hook you up with a HSS gift card worth the amount you bought the tee for. This was a very cool idea one of our members came up with — I guess he wanted a tshirt too. Haha, nah, he always gives us suggestions, and we’re super-stoked. Holly Greenwell

When and what got you into surfing? I grew up on Oahu, and so have been in love with the ocean from my earliest days. I started surfing with a friend of mine in about 1982 when I was 14 because I finally had enough money to buy a used surfboard. My first board was a 5'6" banana yellow Town and Country thruster. I guess my primary motivation was the ocean itself. It always seemed so mysterious and inviting, and a little bit scary and unpredictable to me as a child. So I was curious about it, wanted to know more — immerse myself in it somehow, feel its power. Was there ever a time you weren't surfing? If so, when and why did you start back up? I didn’t surf much during the years I was getting my bachelor’s and higher education degrees. I lived east of LA during my college years, landlocked without a car, so I couldn't get to the beach. Then I lived in Massachusetts, which for a girl from Hawaii felt way too cold to even think about getting in the water, even in the summer. Though there was surf within driving distance up around coastal New Hampshire, and I did have a car, I didn't surf at all. I think in part it was because of the cold, and also because it seemed like it would not really be surfing as I knew it, so I wasn’t drawn to it. I know that’s not exactly fair, and that there can be some fun waves there. But I grew up pretty spoiled in 75degree water, with bare feet in the wax and in such close proximity to the ocean, so I think it just didn't seem like real surfing to zip up in a thick suit and wear shoes in the water. Again, that's not fair, but it’s how I felt at the time. I’d go now for sure if I moved back there. I think I have more drive for it now than I did when I was in my 20s.

generally head right home to eat. Home-cooked eggs with rice and shoyu always hits the spot. Outside of surfing, what do you do for fun? I love to bicycle, or run long distances on weekend days. I have two dogs that keep me entertained. They love runs on the beach and time at the park. What do you do for work? I'm a high school teacher, and have been for 25 years. I love it. I think it’s probably the best place for me to do what I can to help the world be a better place. Why did you decide to get a Hayden Hypto Krypto? What size is it? How does it surf, and what do you like about it? I saw it in the store, and you know when you have surfed a lot of different boards and you can just sense that a shape will work for you when you look at it? I knew it would be fun when I first laid eyes on it. I had also heard a lot of good things about this board and wanted to try it. Once I had it in my hands and felt the weight and volume of it, I knew it would work very well for me. It has great balance, smooth flow, and is very responsive. It’s also easier to get into waves — somewhat wider on the front end than my other shortboards, and the fact that it floats me well makes paddling easy. Once I’m up, it makes me feel like I’m a better surfer than I really am! It is forgiving in ways that other shortboards aren't, so it's easer to stay in the flow, even on bumpy days. I ride a 5’6”, quad setup.

We first got the Hypto Kryptos 5 years ago. Not many people knew about this board, let alone who Hayden was. But we had a feeling that these boards would blow up, and we were right. The shape is something most people can ride with ease, and it handles some good-size surf. At the time, only Thrusters were available, but after 3 years of testing fin placement the 5-fin model came out. During that time, the Hypto became the world’s Where do you surf the most often and why? bestselling board. When you consider how good of a shaper Billy Tolhurst is, and how good of a surfer Harley Ingleby is, it’s no surprise that the two have been collaborating for more than 20 years. But Tolhurst’s career started long before he started building boards for the two-time world champion. Tolhurst scraped his first board out of a slab of timber back in 1964, and since then has led the progression of Australian shaping through various eras, including the shortboard revolution, the transition to polyurethane foam and fiberglass, and eventually the progression to high-tech epoxies and carbon fiber. When Tolhurst teamed up with local rider Ingleby a little over two decades ago, he never could have known where the collaboration would take them. Both surfers hail from the Coffs Harbour region of New South Wales, and both share a distinct interest in longboards. Tolhurst had been shaping them since the beginning, and gained a renewed respect for longer shapes after injuring his shoulder in the 1970s. Meanwhile, Ingleby was a standout on all types of boards, but decided to focus on high-performance longboarding, and has grown to be one of the most successful Australian competitors of the past 10 years. Working together, Tolhurst and Ingleby have taken a number of Tolhurst’s proven designs and tweaked them to create a signature line of longboards and mid-lengths. Utilizing Carve Sports’ Thunderbolt/epoxy matrix technology, Tolhurst has developed a quiver of the most high-tech and high-performance longboards available today, designed to handle everything from draining overhead barrels to rippable performance waves to small, lined up points perfect for noseriding. Whether you are a two-time world champ, two-time Australian champ, and multiple medalist at the World Surfing Games like Harley Ingleby, or a recreational surfer looking to improve his game, Billy Tolhurst’s boards are the answer. Harley Ingleby is a name that might not be too familiar in the US, but for anyone from New South Wales in Australia—or anyone who rides a longboard—there is no mistaking who Harley is. One of longboardings greatest competitors over the past decade, Harley won the 2009 and 2014 world championships, the 2005 and 2007 Australian longboard titles, an individual bronze and team gold in the 2006 World Surfing Games, an individual silver and team gold in the 2008 World Surfing Games, and two other podium finishes at the World Surfing Games in 2009 and 2010. That is what you call competitive dominance. Harley is equally comfortable on the nose, bashing a lip, or packing meaty barrels, and can be seen ripping his local beach breaks near Coffs Harbor in central NSW when he isn’t in a jersey or hoisting trophies at longboarding’s most prestigious events. The incredible versatility that Harley demonstrates means that he needs boards that can do just about anything—ride the barrel, perform progressive maneuvers, and be ridden in a traditional manner. Harley has been having his boards shaped by local designer Billy Tolhurst since he was 12, and recently the two teamed up with Carve Sports to create a line of boards that draw on Tolhurst’s years of experience, Ingleby’s informed feedback, and Carve’s proven high-performance technology. Blending traditional glide with modern design aspects and the lightweight strength of Thunderbolt/epoxy matrix technology, these boards represent the best in high-performance surfing, yet do so without sacrificing the flow that longboarders have been enjoying since the sport began. For those looking to up their performance level on mid-lengths and full-length longboards, and to draw on the inspiration of one of the greatest competitors of the past decade, the Harley Ingleby/Billy Tolhurst boards developed through Carve Sports are the obvious choice.

CRUISER PERFORMANCE - 9’1 x 22 3/4” x 3 1/8 and 9’5” x 23” x 3 3/8” 4+1 set up. Harley’s Cruiser shape was built with the average surfer in mind—guys who want a high-performance board, but aren’t looking for a hyper-sensitive pro model. This board is user-friendly and fun for the average surfer, with a forgiving template and rails, but still able to be carved and nose-ridden. It handles both small, weak conditions and juicy double-overhead bombs, making it a diverse and well-rounded surf craft. The board’s flex is one of its defining characteristics. Lightweight, maneuverable, and features the flex of Harley’s most successful competitive board. Usually a board built with this much flex will break easily, but the Cruiser’s THUNDERBOLT technology makes it one of the strongest boards on the market today.a The pinched in 60/40 rails work with a wide variety of fin setups, from single to 2+1 or quad. The Cruiser even works as a twin-fin, one of Harley’s favorite. 320 Ward Ave Tel (808) 597-9055 Open: Mon - Sat 10:30-7:00 / Sun 10-6 www.hawaiiansouthshore.com
