I’m fortunate to have the opportunity to travel to Japan often, usually work in Sendai, but this time we took a little time off because a good friend offered to take us to the 3 Main Festivals in Northern Japan. He Drove us from Sendai to the first festival, about a 4 hour drive, to Akita for the “Kanto Festival”. It’s held annually from August 5 to 7, the Kanto Festival is used to ask for an abundant grain harvest. It’s become a symbol of Akita, a leading rice-growing area. During the festival, 1.3 million people come to the city. The “Kano”, a 110 lbs. bamboo pole with 46 candle lit lanterns suspended, is raised 39 ft into the air. A view from the bleachers They balance them on their palms, raising them we were sitting at above their heads, also they show their strength and balancing skill by placing them on their shoulders, lower backs and their foreheads. It was amazing. Their are 10,000 lanterns with 3,000 supporters, including performers sounding the flute and drums to cheer on the balancing of the Kanto. We were seated on the median in the middle of the street in bleachers, during the event the DJ would announce that you need to keep your eye on the Kanto because the performers can lose their balance and when it falls you can get injured. We had one that fell right above us but a wire line stopped it a couple feet above us. The performance lasted for about 2 hours.
The next day we traveled to Aomori about 3 hours North. Its the most Northern prefecture on the main island of Honshu. 320 Ward Ave 112 The “Aomori Nebuta Festival” was just as amazing. Honolulu Hi 968214 The 50 performers would pull these Large Floats that are 26 Parking Located feet high and 49 feet wide. During the festival they would run on the Makai side of full speed towards the audience and stop just a couple feet to the building next to supercuts give the effect the creatures are attacking you. It takes an entire year to design and construct the float. There made with “Washi”(traditional Japanese Paper made with bark and shrubs) over a wire frame. The floats often depict Gods, historical or mythical figures from both Japanese and Chinese cultures, Kabuki actors and characters from historical TV series.

Followed by the floats with large Taiko Drums on them. It takes 8-10 people to pull the large float with Taiko players walking from behind playing the Taiko Drums. The ones I saw had one huge Taiko in the middle with 3 smaller ones on both sides of the large Taiko. Right after the Taiko Drums is 30 flute players then a big group of 30 to 50 dancers, all Yelling and dancing. In one of the groups they had a Huge Taiko drum. The Drum 8 people pulling and 6 drummers with was so big they had two guys sitting on top and three people at the bottom all playing in sync. relief drummers walking behind The Festival started from 6:30 and ended at 9:00. I was really impressed with everyone’s performance. They just didn’t let up on the rhythm, especially the drummers. It was like watching a finale of a concert, with the drummer just giving it their all and they would do this just about the whole time. Of course they had reliefs in the back switching with out missing a beat. The next day we headed back to Sendai. My friend had a early morning meeting so he drove himself back leaving at 4am to make his 9am board meeting. The rest of us took the Shinkan Sen (bullet train) back it took about 1 1/2 hours. Once we Huge Taiko arrived into Sendai it was raining hard, we were worried because this was the last festival we were going to attend and if it rained too hard the fireworks could be canceled. The fireworks have been going on for over 40
years and its never been canceled. It was set to go off at 7:00 pm so we still had 6 hours to go. At around 6:30 Keiko and I headed to my friends house and the rain was still going, but according to my friend they were going to still have the festival and show the fireworks. Well after setting up our table and 5 minutes prior to the fireworks it stopped raining and we were able to view an awesome fireworks show!! If you like to travel to Japan and have never been to any of the festivals I highly recommend checking it out. The food and people from the North are totally different then the South. Especially the food.

Customer Profile of the Month Manny M. David: I know you own your own business what is the business called and how long have you been doing what you’re doing? My business is called Visualized Flooring, Inc. I started in the flooring business when I was 21, a good friend invited me to work on a project for his cousin's flooring company and the rest is history. Since then, I've been involved in some very cool projects, traveling and installing some beautiful floors for some great people. In the past eight years we've been specializing in custom hardwood flooring, that is where my passion is right now. David: So owning a business I know takes up a lot of time, how often do you get to surf? Yes, owning a business is hard work, but I wouldn't have it any other way. It allows me to do what I love to do. I surf pretty much whenever I want. Even though my clients come first, I always manage to get my share of waves. But I must confess I have been known to schedule work around surf from time to time. David: How long have you been surfing? Do you remember the first wave you every caught? I've been surfing since I was around 12. I do remember that day clearly. I saw some kids bodyboarding one day, so I grabbed an ice cooler lid that was laying around since I didn't have a bodyboard, jumped in the water, got super rashed out, but I've been hooked ever since. Shortly after that day my parents bought me my first board. David: Do you do a lot of traveling? Surf trips?
I do. I need to travel. We travel at least three times a year, whether its surfing, snowboarding or just a trip with my beautiful wife. We recently got back from Bali and Kandui in the Mentawais, one of the best surf trip of my life! I love seeing new things, places, meeting people, eating different kinds of foods. I think it makes you a better person, widening your perspective but at the same time making you appreciate what you have. David:
If could meet any one in the world that is either Dead or Alive who would you want to meet and Why?
Wow, that's a heavy one. I don't want to sound preachy or to religious, but I would say Jesus. I think he's the greatest man who ever lived. This world can get a bit crazy at times. I thinks a lot of people would benefit if they only tried imitating him once in a while. Thank You Very much Manny for taking the time for this interview!! We appreciate the support from you for sure!!

Hawaiian South Shore Your Surf Authority Expert Advice & Friendly Staff The Reviews from our Members David & Kyle, Hey guys got to tryout my brand spanking new Weirdo Ripper for the first time this morning (remember my deal with my wife..today is my birthday!!). Park was 1-3 feet clean, glassy and calm conditions small but hollow on a medium tide. Board worked GREAT real easy to catch waves, once on the board flew so much so that I ended up constantly trying to cutback so I wouldn't lose the wave, even got barreled a couple of times. Positive on the bottom turns but I haven't had the chance to really punch it due the small wave conditions nor really crank it off the top. So far the board is great it rides really well, gets waves real easy and floats me with no problem. As I get more used to the board I will switch-out different setups thinking MR twins with K2-1 trailers on a quad without the nub. Right now I'm using recommended K2.1 PC with nubster only used it once so far but it was really fun. Thanks for the help in getting me setup with this board. Glad I got it when I did cause I've heard there is an 8 month back order wait, oh well I got mine and that all that counts!!! Chee Hoo! Aloha, Matty H. Hawaiian South Shore Your Surf Authority Expert Advice & Friendly Staff Want to Get your Winter Board? We have several members that already got their winter board orders in but It’s not to late. For customer orders it usually takes 8 weeks so if you get your order in now you’ll be getting your board at the beginning of the season. With so many options about their its so confusing. So I emailed a couple of the Shapers and asked them what board would they recommend. Here is some of the replies we received. I sent an email to Paul who is in charge of the Surfboard orders at Lost. Here is what I asked Paul, can you give me a list of what boards you recommend for the winter for the for guys that are Small guys 150 below, the Med size guys 150-185, the Large guys 185-200 and the Big Dude that are XL 200+ for up to 6' waves (Hawaiian size).
Stock Dimensions 5’8 18.75 2.18 (25.0cl) Probably go with Rock ups and Mini Drivers 5'8-6'10. 5’10 19.00 2.25 (27.0cl) That should cover all the guys sizes. The Rocket 5’11 19.13 2.32 (28.5cl) If a Rocket (or other hybrid) has become your favorite daily board, and 6’0 19.25 2.38 )29.8cl) you find it frustrating switching back to a traditional, pointy nose step-up 6’1 19.38 2.38 (30.5cl) board on bigger, crowded days …then this board is for you. Designed to be ridden 2-4” longer than you would a Rocket. The low entry rocker, flat 6’2 19.50 2.44 (31.9cl) deck and tapered rails (with a full forward outline) paddles through 6’3 19.75 2.50 (33.5cl) crowds and moving water, and catches waves with ease. The pulled in 6’4 20.00 2.63 (36.1cl) tail, combined with the aggressive tail rocker and a smoother, shallower 6’6 20.50 2.75 (39.8cl) concave, allows controlled maneuvers at high speeds on chest high to double overhead waves. Chris Ward’s one board quiver these days. Here’s his reply -
Stock Dimensions 5’4 x 18.25 x 2.18 (22.5L) While preparing a quiver for an Indo trip Kolohe asked for “a short, fast 5’5 x 18.38 x 2.18 (23.1L) (flat rockered) little 5 fin tube rider”. I recommended the Rock-Up, but 5’6 x 18.50 x 2.25 (24.3L) he felt it had more tail rocker than he liked and wanted something really, 5’7 x 18.75 x 2.25 (25.0L) really fast the he could take off extremely deep and pump through tubes 5’8 x 19.00 x 2.32 (26.4L) from way back. We started with a 6’0” Driver, took note of the nose rocker and outline measurements at 4” and 16” back from the tip, then 5’9 x 19.25 x 2.32 (27.2L) 5’10 x 19.50 x 2.38 (28.5L) shrunk the board to a 5’8” and lowered the nose rocker at the tip and 5’11 x 19.75 x 2.44 (30.0L) 12” back till it matched the 4” and 16” from before. We widened the nose until it matched up the same way. This gave us a screaming fast 6’0” x 20.00 x 2.5 (32.3L) low nose rocker with a forward placed outline, both attributes give tons 6’1” x 20.25 x 2.63 (34.8L) of drive. We then rounded off the tail, but left the width at 12” the 6’2” x 20.50 x 2.75 (37.1L) same. This gave us a very clean and elliptical outline that we expected 6’4” x 21.00 x 2.75 (39.1L) would move free and easy inside the tube. The Mini Driver performed as hoped. Interestingly enough, one of Kolohe’s buddies (Taylor Clark) grabbed it after it came back from Indo and used it in the US Nationals event in Huntington Beach. He surfed it in 2’ slop all the way to a second place finish in the Open Men’s division. The board worked in everything. Mini Driver

A trusty, versatile, all-around performance shorty with some new upgrades…slightly heavier concaves for grip & a touch of tail rocker flip off the back fin for controlled release. A predictable drivey board for waves waist high to well overhead; turns on a dime at will. Big Chief Developed specifically for heavier surfers and/or those that surf more off their rail; this is the shortboard you can rip on and not sink on. Heavier surfers and those that grew up surfing during the 80’s era tend to surf more with their rails then off their fins. So the fuller rails of this design are essential for a board that “pushes back” and drives through turns. Increased volume, especially under the chest, affords ease in paddling.
