Christmas Thanksgiving New Year Day

What!! I would have never thought I’m sure you know that the food is just “ono.” Even if you’ve never been, I’m sure you’ve heard people talk about it. Even the bentos sold at convenience stores are good. (Personally, my favorite is 7-Eleven.) Most of the bentos in Japan come with “waribashi” (disposable wooden chopsticks) and a toothpick. I tend to forget that you need to be extra careful, because if you forget and crumple the paper, the toothpick might poke you. Have you ever noticed that most waribashi have directions written on them? I’ve see some on how to use chopsticks, and I’ve noticed some on how to break them apart. Wait, what? I didn’t think you needed directions to pull apart chopsticks. I always ignored them, thinking that they didn’t matter. But on my last trip to Japan, I was eating a bento and my waribashi splintered. The friend I was with said that I needed to pull them apart while holding them in a horizontal position, just like it says in the directions. What? I told him that I didn’t think it would make a difference whether I held them in a vertical or a horizontal position. Nonetheless, I took his advice for the next set, and my waribashi didn’t break or splinter. As a matter of fact, it seemed easier to break apart. Hey, don’t ask me how I did it — all I know is that it seemed to work. So, I guess the instructions on the package really mean something…haha!

After that, we started discussing chopstick manners, I’m sure that most people in Hawaii grew up with chopsticks, but weren’t aware of chopstick etiquette, so I thought I’d share some chopstick manners with you for your next trip (or for the next time you share a meal with Japanese folks). Do not stick your chopsticks upright in your rice. This is an absolute no-no because it’s the way a bowl of rice is offered to the spirit of a dead person, either on their deathbed or in front of their photograph on the household Buddhist altar. Spearing your food with one chopstick is seriously frowned upon as well, but even doing so with two is not considered very polite. Passing food from chopstick to chopstick is prohibited because, when a person dies and is cremated, their bones are passed from chopstick to chopstick as a part of the Buddhist funeral ritual. My grandmother would always scold me when I did this. And make sure not to rub your waribashi together when you are at a nice restaurant — it’s insulting and conveys they are using cheap chopsticks. Last of all, don’t point at people or things with your chopsticks. This is considered even more rude than pointing with your fingers. You probably didn’t know there were so many rules, and these are only the main ones. Happy chopsticking! — David

What got you into surfing? When did you start? I started surfing later than most people because I was born and raised in New Jersey (far from the beach). I moved to Oahu about 15 years ago, after college, and I was actually scared of the ocean when I first got here! Luckily, I met some awesome people who introduced me to the world of surfing shortly after I moved to Hawaii. I started taking surf lessons with the beach boys in Waikiki, and eventually I was given a big waterlogged board that I lugged around all over the place. Then I entered medical school and met a group of amazing chicks who ripped, and who inspired me to stick with surfing. Was there ever a time you weren’t surfing? If so, when and why did you start back up again? Yes, after I started surfing, there were some big gaps I spent out of the water. It was tough

finding time to surf, especially during certain parts of medical school and pediatrics training, so surfing took the backseat for about 5 years. After I completed my pediatrics training (about 6 years ago), I finally had time to get back in the water. My husband loves to surf too, so we would check out different spots together. My partner in crime Sheri has always been down for everything as well. It always helps to have a surf buddy! Where is your favorite place to surf and why? Rockpiles! It’s a really fun wave and the morning crew is the bomb! But really territorial…lol. Where is your favorite place to eat after surfing? What do you usually get? Pioneer Saloon — I love the Wasabi Halibut! And the shaved ice next door is awesome. Outside of surfing, what do you do for fun? I like to spend time with my husband and my 2 boys. (They're 1- and 3-years-old.) I also love to snowboard, cook, paint, garden, exercise, and play lacrosse. What do you do for work? I’m a pediatric hospitalist. In other words, I’m a pediatrician who takes care of kids when they stay in the hospital. Anything else you want to add? I’m sorry that my boys tear up your store every time I bring them in ... haha!

Jim Anderson came in a couple months ago talking about all the’ fins hes tried on his board and nothing seemed to be working the way he wanted it. So we recommend a set of Quads from Halo Fins. 4 3/4” side and 4 1/2” rear. Here’s what he had to say. Dave, Jim Anderson here. You recall I’ve used the M7 quads, M5 quads, SF4 Stretch quads, B2 Bonzer quads, and now the Halo quads on my Walden Mini Mega Magic (6’ 10” x 23 ” x 3 ”). These are by far the best! Past 3 mornings I have experienced excellent drive, no sluggishness at all in flat areas, and absolutely no prob on the pivots! Very happy with this set up! Thanks for turning me on to these guys. Now I can stop spending money on fins for a while. — Jim 320 Ward Ave Tel (808) 597-9055 Open: Mon - Sat 10:30-7:00 / Sun 10-6 www.hawaiiansouthshore.com

New!!! At Hawaiian South Shore and the First to get it. The Channel Island Surfboard made in the molded epoxy. Molded epoxy is something like the Surftech’s and Board Works. Currently it only comes in one model which is the board Kelly Slater designed in 2000 called the Pod, but with slightly modified bottom and tail, hence Pod Mod. It designed to be ridden six inches shorter then your standard shortboard and Kelly started a revolution of shorter wider boards. Lost was dong back in late 80’s but it took Kelly Slater in 2000 for everyone to understand what Matt Biolos knew already. The Pod Mod design is a heavily modified Pod, designed to be ridden even shorter and wider than the original, catering to the surfer that wants a little more volume forward to catch waves but doesn’t want to sacrifice performance. The tail has been widened for small wave glide, and the original single to double concave has been replaced with a flat entry to concave vee for quick rail to rail transitions. Boards come in 3 sizes and two colors 5’6” x 20 3/8” x 2 1/2” Volume 31.3L $520 5’10” x 20 7*” x 2 5/8” Volume 35.71 $530 6’2” x 21 3/8” x 2 3/4” Volume 40.51 $540

Don’t Demo This Surf has been small … but I’ve been having fun. The Funline11 8’0 demo has been making it fun for me. I normally shortboard and usually have a hard time maneuvering a longboard and fat oversized funboards but this Funline11 can turn with ease. It’s 8’0” x 23” x 3 1/2”. It feels like I’m paddling a 9’0 but it surfs and turns like a 7’0 fun board. On my recent session I traded boards with Keoki who said, “Me and longboards don't get along. I cannot turn them for the life of me.” I challenged him to try it out. After a few waves that were knee to waist high he was trying to walk the nose. when he returned the board he said, “I’m surprised at how well it turns and I even walked to the nose and it didn't dig”. I said, “Me too, I cannot nose ride but this thing is super easy to walk to the nose.” If you’d like to ride this board tell the guys at the shop you read this article and we will demo it to you for free. We usually charge $10 but I will waive the fee for you. Try it out. Just yesterday, a good customer who’s been a member for a long time and shortboards, tried it out and ended up buying a board. So I warn you … if you’re not ready to buy a board … don’t demo this. Guaranteed you’ll want one. 320 Ward Ave Tel (808) 597-9055 Open: Mon - Sat 10:30-7:00 / Sun 10-6 www.hawaiiansouthshore.com
