Today we received a new shipment of reusable shopping bags. Since we don't have a forklift two of my staff members and I, unload the truck and
Hours stack it in the warehouse. I would Break the pallets, place the boxes at the Mon - Sat end of the lift gate. 10:30-7:00 Then each one of them would grab the Sun 10:00-6:00 box run to the Closed warehouse stack it. Christmas The truck lift gate ThanksGiving was getting full and I New Year Day stopped both of Telephone them and told them not to run back and forth. One person garb it from the lift gate and drop it at 808.597.9055 the entrance of the warehouse and then the other Email person take it into the warehouse and stack it. In Sales@ other words I had to tell them to form a Bucket Hawaiian brigade. First of all it’s faster and in the long run SouthShore.com you end up using less energy. I thought that was Parking common sense and to be honest I could not Located Makai figure out why they didn't do that first place. But I side of the remember helping a friend out at his operation store and I had to tell the guys to from a Bucket SAT&SUN brigade also because all 8 people were running back and forth. OK to park on After we finished unloading and I had time to Mauka Side reflect on what I had to tell them. Then I remembered it was something we did in the Navy all the time especially when we were relishing underway.

You see when we are underway (out to sea) for a couple weeks we start running out of food and other essentials. I think the first thing we ran out of first was always milk. Then we would be served some kind of Milk alternative. I think it was some kind of UHT (Ultra-Heat Treatment) milk. It had a shelf life of 6 to 8 months. Believe me it didn't taste good unless it was chilled. I highly doubt it was good for you. When we ran out of OJ they would make instant juice. I drank it for a while but stopped ever since I found out they would use it to clean brass fittings. The fittings were placed in a bucket full of instant juice over night and in the morning the fittings were like brand new. After seeing that I was blow away they would let us drink that. Anyways when we received replacement underway it was a All hands job. Everyone would form a very long line to the warehouse and it would get loaded in a couple hours. After several years of doing this it become natural. To the point when our ship got re-home ported here in Pearl Harbor and I lived in Pearl City with several people. We would unload our groceries like that…I guess it was ingrained into us I guess. haha

really damaged. It got to the point somebody she knew said “Lisa you really have some damaged hair” so she felt really embarrassed. So out of the blue she decided to use coconut oil to see if it would help. The results were softer hair and no split ends, so she continues to use it before surf. The Simple solution to surfers hair. I noticed she always has a bottle of coconut oil. I asked her and rubs it all into the ends of the what she uses it for. She started off by telling me hair. she got back into surfing in 1990 her hair became 320 Ward Ave Tel (808) 597-9055 Open: Mon - Sat 10:30-7:00 / Sun 10-6 www.hawaiiansouthshore.com

Wound Closure By Spencer Chang, MD Sports Medicine Fellowship Trained Orthopaedic Surgeon at Straub Clinic and Hospital WSL Orthopaedic Consultant So the 1st thought when one gets a wound or laceration is, how do we close it? Problem is, if the wound isn’t adequately cleaned up, closing a wound might trap the bacteria in the wound and cause a serious infection. Medical professionals in the military used to get courtmartialed when they closed open wounds. Well, at least that’s what my Attendings told me as a Resident doing my rotation at Tripler. Some wounds like animal bites, puncture wounds (deep wound, small opening), and heavily contaminated wounds should never be closed tightly, as the risk of infection is too great. If the wound is about 1 cm long, it will generally heal well with or without stitches. Here are some ways to close wounds: Adhesive strips: This includes Steri-Strips, Bandaids, cloth tape, and even duct tape. Using a tincture of Benzoin or Mastisol helps the SteriStrips stay on better. You can trim hair, but shaving may increase the risk of infection. Application is placed perpendicular to the wound, and this technique may work on small lacerations that aren’t deep. When there is tension on the wound, the adhesives may cause blistering of the skin. If the wound sweats or gets wet, the wound can become macerated (the softening and breaking down of skin from moisture), can start to look whiter, and may often lead to wound breakdown or infection. All of the adhesive techniques fail in water. There are certain glues that may be used for closure as well like Dermabond or Liquiband. These are also good for small, linear wounds, but often don’t work well on hands and feet., or

wounds with tension and movement. These closures also fail when it gets wet. Skin staples are a great way to close wounds. They hold up better in water, but do leave “train track” scars. It also takes much less skill than suturing, and are a good idea to bring on surf trips with a staple remover as well. The gold standard of closure is sutures or stitching. These also do hold up better in water. With that said, ideally you would want to keep a wound clean and dry, any where from 5 – 14 days, depending on the severity and location of the laceration. I’ve used occlusive dressings like Tegaderm or even better Ioban to allow pro surfers to get back in the water and lessen their chances of wound infection in a freshly repaired wound. If you are going to go surfing after a wound closure, be sure to meticulously clean the wound on land. Change any dressings immediately after your surf, rinse with clean fresh water, and pat it dry with a towel. Reapply dressings and try to keep it as clean and dry as possible. Application of a topical antibiotic ointment like Bacitracin is also a good idea. If the wounds are soupy and wet, leave it uncovered at night to dry up with a thin layer of antibiotic ointment. If the wound starts to drain more, especially thick, foul smelling, yellow-white (pus), and there is redness, more swelling, and fever or chills, you have an infection, which should get treated by a health professional as soon as possible. Much of the information was obtained from Surf Survival: The Surfer’s Health Handbook. This is an awesome book, discussing first aid, travel, dangerous animals, fitness, big surf, and injury prevention. It is co-written by my great friend and partner at Straub, Dr. Clay Everline. If you’d like an appointment with Dr. Everline or myself, call us at the Straub Bone and Joint Center at 522-4232. Just say Dave from Hawaiian South Shore sent you! Also, if you have anything you want me to discuss on upcoming newsletters, shoot me an e-mail at Skychang@straub.net.

David: what high school did you go to?
Lisa: I went to Castle high school. I graduated 1979, then I worked at Zippy’s.

there's not much of a break. I don't get a lunch break, so, yeah. I run to the bathroom and I grab my snacks. I get all these snacks prepared so I can run to the bathroom while I'm eating my snacks. (laughing), Because we don't have a break.

David: Wow that was your first job Lisa: That was my first job. Then, I drove the School Bus. The best bosses you could ever have. Then I moved to Denver and I was a nanny for a couple years.

David: Wow, that’s tough, so what kind of snacks do you eat?

Lisa: Then I came back home. Then I moved to Vegas and was a change girl.

David: Healthy!

David: A change girl? Lisa: I switched money. David: Ohhh yeahh, yeah, yeah.

Lisa: Like cucumbers, apples... Lisa: …oranges, and some things I get at Costco. You know, some healthy snacks. Yeah. David: How did you get into surfing?

Lisa: And then I moved to the security office; eye in the sky, watching everybody (laughing) do their thing. Get calls from the security, somebody's robbing. You know, there's always something going on, always something in Vegas. And I came home, I was a dental assistant. That was kind of a crazy job (laughing).

Lisa: I always either body surfed or boogie board, or I was in the ocean. And then I was going through a, kind of low time in my life, so the guys at work told me to ask this other guy that we worked with, if he could teach me. So I started going out with their friends and learning to surf, and that was in 1990, and I kind of gave it up because I accidentally hit somebody!

David: Whoa, you’ve done all kinds of jobs!

David: Oh no…

Lisa: Yeah.

Lisa: So I was crying in the water because I hurt somebody! And then they brought out their surfboard, and he says, “No you just have to go! Don’t worry!” So I would, I just got into it.

Lisa: Then I’ve been driving “The Bus” for 26 years. David: So what are your hours like? Lisa: So, I try to get the early schedule, because the traffic's so bad on this island. So I start at about 4 or 5 in the morning. I get up at 2 so I can do my exercises.

Lisa: I'm not good, but hey, it's just for the exercise.

David: What kind of exercises do you do?

David: So your eyesight is really bad?

Lisa: I do things for therapy because of my- I have a lot of injuries from work. When you drive the bus you get all busted up! (laughing)

Lisa: Yeah. So I can see the waves.

David: Really?

Lisa: They take me to different places, but you know, I don't surf with my glasses so… (laughing)

David: Sometimes you come drift over to our area and we have to tell you…(laughing)

Lisa: (laughing) Yeah!

Lisa: Yeah! (laughing) I know. Thank very much! Because my guys, they just let me go.

David: from sitting down and…?

David: (laughing)

Lisa: Well sitting down, and carpel tunnel, and from the steering, all the bouncing because the roads are so bad.

Lisa: I hear the Marine-land guys: Lisa, you're at the wrong spot. Thank you! Because my guys at Straight Outs don’t tell me nothing!

David: What time do you get off?

David: (laughing) They just let you drift off?

Lisa: About 12:30, 1 o'clock, 2 o'clock, around there. And then I go and do my therapy after work because I'm trying to avoid surgery. I don't want to have surgery. So I figure if I can keep my body up to par, even though I have the injuries and it hurts, I still keep going.

Lisa: (laughing) Yeah! They’re terrible! (both laughing)

David: So what do you do for exercise in the morning.

Lisa Thank you very much for letting us do this interview! See you in the line up…oh if I see you in the line up I’ll let you know you drifted to the wrong spot…haha

Lisa: Oh. I do stretches, I do some jumping jacks, and some leg exercises to strengthen my knees. Because, you know, you're sitting for over nine hours. And

Lisa: They just get a kick out of it. (both laughing) End…..
