Getting Checked up Is More Important than you think I know from Experience and I may have save my Life

It all started out with a persistent cold with a slight fever that I couldn't shake for several days. My wife told me for several days to get checked and after 4 days I finally listened and went to Member my physician. My cold and fever was something I didn't have to worry about but my unusually of the Month high blood pressure was something my Doc was concerned with. She ordered blood and urine tests then sent me home. The phone call the next day is what changed my life. Page 3 The tests indicated I had something potentially wrong with my Kidney. After several tests and Trim examinations by a Nephrologist (Kidney Doctor) I went to get a kidney biopsy. Redline11 The Biopsy was not fun. I laid face down, lightly sedat ed while they inserted this… man I swear was about 2 feet long needle thru my my back. I’m checking this out live on an ultrasound Page 4 itmonitor. Just before he inserts the cork screw looking tip into my kidney to take a piece he tells Toms me to hold my breath so the kidney doesn’t move. After 3 times, I was over it and asked him to speed it up.

Well, after a few days and with some complications from internal bleeding ,I get the results back.

I was told I have “Focal Glomerular Sclerosis”, which meant that the tiny blood vessels in my kidney were getting scared so they weren’t filtering they’re supposed to. Closed like I was monitored by the Nephrologist for about a year and as my health deteriorated, I started Christmas to get sick in the mornings. I remember surfing in the mornings feeling sick and I had to paddle New Year Day away from the crowd and throw up. I guess it’s the toxins that build up and it was one way my body was getting rid of it. I got to the point I where needed a transplant. Man, I was kinda Telephone depressed for a little while but I figured, this is what I was dealt so live with it and just mountain bike and surf. I had to get a tube inserted in my neck to a vein so I could be on 808 dialysis. I was told no hard activity for a while. So for that week before, I mountain biked and 597-9055 surfed as much as I could. After being on and dialysis, and I didn't know this at the time, but both my parents and most of my relatives on from my fathers side of the family who all live back East, all got tested to see if sales@ they could donate. My Dad was a perfect match. hawaiian

So 6 months later we were at UCSF getting a transplant. I recovered real fast but my father Parking took an extra 3 weeks to get better. The donor I guess has a rougher time because they had Located on the to cut a couple ribs to pull the kidney out but nowadays it’s much less invasive. I am so super lucky to have good people around me. Makai side of the store To be honest I didn’t know my Dad’s side of the family well because I spent most of my life Sat & Sun growing up in the Far East but they still stepped up to the plate. Man, having some kind of OK to park on family connection is unreal!! Mauka Side 320 Ward Ave Tel (808) 597-9055 Open: Mon - Sat 10:30-7:00 / Sun 10-6 www.hawaiiansouthshore.com

Hawaiian South Shore Your Surf Boutique For the Finicky Surfer and Clothing Junkie Our Member of the Month Alison Nakagawa A little over a 2 Months ago I asked Alison Nakagawa to let me interview her and her comment was, why do you want to interview me, I’m not some young surfer. But after some convincing I finally got her to say yes!! I’m hoping this will get others who haven’t surfed in a long time get back in the water for that stoked feeling and and hopefully it’ll create a healthy lifestyle. Because when you Feel Good you Look Good then good happens. Keep on Surfing Alison!! Keep on Surfing!! Alison thank you for taking the time to let me interview you. So when did you first start surfing? I was bodyboarding pretty regularly in the late 80s. I tried surfing once but didn't care for it because for me, it felt weird being kind of disconnected, standing up out of the water so I just stuck to bodyboarding. After I got married and had kids I stopped and 15 years just passed by so fast. Then about 8 years ago, some friends came to visit from the mainland and wanted to try surfing. So we rented some of those huge boards in Waikiki and took turns having my husband, Gary push us into the waves and I was like "Hey! This is kind of fun!" I had so much fun I couldn’t stop talking about it with some of my female co-workers. So I talked them into meeting us at Waikiki on 4th of July — not knowing about the huge annual canoe regatta with a good portion of the shoreline is cordoned off with thousands of paddlers that converge on Waikiki beach. But that didn't deter us. We still had lots of fun and we were hooked!! Where do you usually surf? I surf regularly around.. Kewalo’s but if the waves are too big for me or if my daughter and her friends want to surf I go to Canoes or Pops. Do you have any other hobbies beside surfing right now? Right now I’m just happy surfing plus I’m kind of busy right now with work and teenage daughter stuff. I should have other hobbies like gardening, even jogging or Zumba to help me surf better but no, just surfing. One of my goals after my daughter graduates from high school is to take up makule paddling. What do you like to eat after surf? My favorite thing to eat after surfing is a spicy ahi poke bowl from Foodland. Actually….that's one of my favorite things to eat anytime. What do you do for work? I work in the healthcare IT field, I work some funky hours but I feel so blessed to have the flexibility to surf before work. I have an unobstructed view of the ocean from my office so it can be a distraction but a good one, for now, at least. I hope with the flurry of condos being built or planned in the Kakaako, it doesn't disappear. My one concern is with so many moving into Kakaako, I hope the crowd and water quality doesn’t go down. Alison Thank you very much for taking the time to let me interview you!! See you in the water!! 320 Ward Ave Tel (808) 597-9055 Open: Mon - Sat 10:30-7:00 / Sun 10-6 www.hawaiiansouthshore.com

trim

A few months ago Isaac, one my staff members who’s really into the art scene, handed me a surf magazine and said Matt, his friend, is doing this mag and wanted me to have a copy. The first thing I noticed was the size. It’s about as large as a “Life” magazine or if you don’t know that mag …it’s about the size of a Surfing Mag “Photo Annual”, with much higher paper quality and each photo has this … story type of feel to it. I took it home and checked it out and to be honest placed it in my bookshelf. Then about a week ago I received an email from the crowd funding Kickstarter and it was the guys at “trim”. So I emailed Matt and told him I’d like to help get the word out. He was totally stoked so we met and talked story for a while. Well…I think I was doing most of the talking because I am super stoked on what they are doing. The whole vibe of the mag is something I really dig. I found out that they have them in Better Hotel rooms and I thought it was very cool of the hotels to support him. Hopefully, I’d be able to somehow help get the word out and maybe when Matt has time we could have an event so all our members can meet the trim staff…. Well, actually there are only two guys doing all this. As I was writing this, I emailed Matt and asked if he could send me an email about Who is Trim and this is what he sent me. Aloha HSS Newsletter readers, my name is Matt Luttrell. My partner, Chance Carpenter, and I started a surf culture magazine called trim a little over a year ago. While the majority of surf magazines focus on the sport side of surfing, we decided to go the opposite direction.

Matt & Chance

We don't surf contests. We surf because it is the funnest thing to do on this planet. We felt that the birthplace of surfing deserved a publication that could properly articulate (both in words and photographs) the incredible thrill that sliding on waves produces. Surfing is visual poetry, and our goal with the magazine is to capture the beauty and magic that makes playing in the ocean so special. Unlike Chance (who grew up in Kona), I grew up in Texas, landlocked. I don't know if that is the reason why I am so thankful and stoked every time I get the chance to paddle out at Ala Moana Beach Park, even on tiny days. Like all of you, I love riding waves. However, I might be a little different from all of you because I also love reading, researching, and talking story about riding waves. You could probably say I am a surf nerd. And that is the reason why I wanted to start trim; to take that passion and translate that perpetual stoke into the highest quality surf culture magazine possible. Hopefully you will be stoked as well, because we need your help. We just launched a Kickstarter campaign to sell subscriptions to our humble surf magazine and we could really use your support. http://kck.st/1u6vEb8 Thank you for the support HSS readers! trimhawaii.com

“One of the best longboards I've ever owned! Performed just as promised. Telling everyone to buy one. Mahalo to H.S.S. for bringing in such a great board! Thanks Kyle and David” - Manny M. Honolulu "I have been riding longboards for over 40 plus years. The Stewart Redline 11 is the ""best"" board I have ever ridden. This board is loose and fast. You can drive from the bottom to the top of the wave or into the sweet spot transitioning effortlessly driving across the face of the wave. I have yet to uncover the full potential of the board. I wish this board existed 40 years ago.” - Gordon S. Honolulu 320 Ward Ave Tel (808) 597-9055 Open: Mon - Sat 10:30-7:00 / Sun 10-6 www.hawaiiansouthshore.com
