Surf Authority Across Sports Authority
Aloha All, It’s August already and summer is almost over. I don’t know how many times I’ve said it but this year is flying by. This summer has been one of the more better ones I can remember. Not really big swells but just lots of swells which has been keeping everyone satisfied. In this months issue we talk about different fin set ups. Single, twin, thruster, quads, we break it all down for you, Plus surfing in Japan.
Surf Nippon By Keith I have just returned from a short vacation to Japan a few weeks ago. The plan was to surf and eat and surf and eat. I spent 5 days in Chiba where it was pretty small the whole time. Knee to waist high and maybe chest high if we were lucky. The conditions were prefect, clean

glass but the water was a little chilly. I had to wear a spring suit some of the mornings. We primarily surfed this river mouth that was a perfect right that peeled along the sand bank. The water was pretty dirty and nasty but that spot seemed like it had the most swell and push so we surfed it every day. The last day the waves came up overnight and was head high and glassy. I checked out this left reef point but it was just a little to small. If it was a foot bigger it would have been perfect spitting chocolate barrels. We ended up surfing around Ichinomiya and got some really fun waves that day. If you are interested in going to Japan to surf I would highly recommend it. Its not the cheapest place to visit but you will definitely have a good time. You can find some really good waves if you know where to look and when to go. If you need info about surfing Japan you can contact me at the store.

I surf in the Early Mornings and noticed the other day the clouds were different from what I am use to seeing in the summer. It looked like the Mainland when the weather changes to fall, and its a little chilly for this time of the year and thought about wearing a long sleeve top but that was to hot then Keith suggested I wear one of the Vest, I’ve never wore one, he says its keeps him warm enough during the days its cool but doesn’t restrict his paddling… Maybe I will try one… The one I’m thinking about trying is the O’Neill Original Super soft and it has that smooth skin that won’t let the wind through… Hey if you want to try One let me know and I will hook you Up with a 15% discount… call us to find Out if we have them in stock before driving Down to the shop David Kelly

Fin Set Ups We get a lot of questions about what is the difference between the fin set ups and how would you ride them? So I put together some info hopefully this helps.
Twin Fin
Single Fins
Most think Single fins are good for only small waves but they are good for any size surf from knee high to giant Waimea size. The traditional retro long boarders prefer single fin, for smooth wide turns off the bottom and to the top. More gracefully type of surfing. As the illustration shows its best to surf the board with long drawn out turns and use the top of the wave to get speed down the line. Its best not pump the board down the line use the weight of the board, with the height of the wave to get speed. For faster or smaller arc turning place the fin up forward in the box, this will place the pivot point closer to the center of the board (kind of like shortening the wheel base of a car to turn in a smaller radius). If you want long arching turns just pull the fin back and take your time surfing and enjoy the wave.

No fin in the middle making the board very loose or squirrely when surfing. Best to surf more top half of the wave with sharper turns using the rail to rail transition. When taking off on the wave I wouldn’t go all the way down to the bottom, since there is no center fin it tends to slip.

“BRA BOYS” NARRATED BY RUSSELL CROWE
Solid line shows the best way to ride Thruster Tri fin or Thruster More for radical top to bottom surfing you can generate good speed. Since there is a center fin you can drive all the way to the bottom drive back up with out slipping. Most people are more comfortable with this set up. Quads The new quads are not the ones from the 80’s these are faster and way better than what was available in the past. Especially with all the new fins from Futures and FCS your selection is endless. It doesn’t matter on the type of board they now use Quads on Short, Long and SUPs boards. The Surf size does not matter either from small surf to tow in size waves, Quads are used. Real Positive and fast down the line. You will be able to make sections that you had trouble making in the past. White wash will not be a problem also it’s positive in it. Think of it as turbo charging your board.
