What an epic summer it’s turning out to be for waves. We’ve had waves for most of the month of July with more swell on the horizon. Lets hope it continues for another few months. Or better yet, another 6 months would be good. Some were saying it’s the best summer in 10 years, but I think it’s been longer than that. I’ve been surfing for 25+ years and I don’t remember it ever being this consistent. Then, just the other day I saw an interview with Pat Caldwell the surf forecaster, he was saying it hasn't been this consistent with over heard waves since 1970’s. I’m stoked like everyone else is to be getting so much waves. No need to take a surf trip this summer, can just stay home and surf waves in my back yard, save money. //Keith

Product Review
I got my hands on one of these Go Pro digital board mount cameras recently and gave it a test run. I was curious to see what the quality of the pictures would be like so I took some shots out of the water first. I was really impressed by the clarity of the pics and how wide of an area the wide angle lens captured. This 5 megapixel camera comes packaged with 2 board mounting options. You have the adhesive mounting disc that is a peel and stick type. Just peel the backing off and stick it anywhere on your board. Then you have the FCS mount adapter which attaches to the camera and fits into a FCS plug that you can have installed in your board. I chose to have an FCS plug put into my board (thanks to The Ding Kings) because it’s lighter and looks better. The package also contains all the cables you need for transferring your pics and videos to your computer. This camera can do amazing things. You can set it to take a picture every 2 seconds or every 5 seconds, and you can also record video. A 2Gig SD Card is required and can take about 1400 pictures or almost an hour of video. I thought the camera did a really good job of taking super clear and crisp photos as well as video. The wide angle lens lets you capture yourself plus the wave in the back ground. The camera is very light weight so I didn’t even feel it on my board. I tried it out mid day on a semi sunny day and got really good results with both the stills and video. I was also really surprised how easy it was to operate this camera in the water. This product is definitely worth looking at. We have gotten so many stoked customers that have purchased this product. Check out the gallery page. These were all taken with the Go Pro board mounted camera. //Keith

SURF TRAVEL By Keith What do you look for when planning a surf trip? The standard answer would be...scoring perfect waves with nobody around. Well that would be just part of it. The other part would be the adventure, and also exposing yourself to other cultures. A surf trip can be so much more than just surf, eat, sleep, surf. I took a trip to Southern Japan a few years ago and got some really, really good waves. Miyazaki Prefecture, on the island of Kyushu has tons of quality surf with lots of empty lineups, warm weather, and warm water. It felt more like Hawaii than Japan. There were palm trees everywhere and the ocean was as blue as here. The best time to get waves there are from Aug - Oct. That’s when there are a lot of typhoons happening in that region. Typhoons = Swell. Last year there were 20+ typhoons during that time! Getting there...Fly into Narita Airport, then take the limousine bus to Haneda Airport to catch the domestic flight south. It takes about 90 minutes from Narita to Haneda so make sure you allow enough time between flights. There’s also an express train you can catch but, found the bus easier. The flight to Miyazaki is pretty quick, maybe 2 hours at the most. There are other ways to get there, like different airports , but I choose this option just so I could have a few days in Tokyo before I came back to Hawaii. I met up with a friend in Miyazaki so transportation wasn't a problem. If you want to rent a car, there are a bunch of places to rent from but be prepared for high rental fees. I stayed at a minshuku (bed and breakfast) in Aoyshima for $30 a night. It happened to be right across the street from a fun beach break. My first day I got waves that were pretty fun, maybe 5 feet but with less power than the waves in town. I surfed a peak by myself only 30 yards away from the main peak which had 50 guys on it. For some reason the Japanese surfers like to all surf together, like it’s some kind of big social event. I’m pretty anti social when it comes to surfing. I took a drive down the coast to Nichinan where there are all kinds of surf spots. Reef points, river mouths, beach breaks, Nichinan had it all. I surfed the day at a fun river mouth with some locals. I would have liked to have driven further south to explore more of the coast line but with the limited amount of surfing days I had I decided to get as much surfing in with the least amount of driving as possible. Up the coast in Hyuga, there were deserted beaches with really fun looking beach breaks but I was kind of sketched to paddle out by myself. Instead I followed the coast and came upon a surf spot with a few guys out. I met an aussie lady in the line up who has been teaching English in Japan for 8 years. She was so happy to be speaking English to someone, she showed me where a good camping spot was just up the road in the mountains. I was going to camp on the beach but thought the mountains would be a nice change of pace. With 2 days left in Miyazaki the weather turned bad. Rain and a cold wind made me decide to start the 1000 mile drive back to Tokyo a few days sooner. The original plan was to haul ass back to Tokyo so I could visit some friends for a few days. Now I had an extra 2 days so I decided to stop in Hiroshima and Kyoto on the way. Both of those places I’ve never been to but have always wanted to see. Hiroshima is a place I would recommend every one to go to at least once. More specifically, you must go to the Peace Memorial Museum. You’ll leave there with a different out look on things. Kyoto felt like old school Japan, I really liked it there. There are so many temples and narrow streets, it really gives you a feeling of how Japan used to be. I meditated in this one temple and felt relaxed and refreshed after I came out. 3 days later and back in Tokyo I got to participate in a Mikoshi festival. This particular festival only happens every 100 years so I was lucky enough to be there when it happened. I don’t care what anybody says, that Mikoshi is heavy. Even with 20+ people carrying it, I was struggling to keep it on my shoulder. Surf trips can be so much more than just surfing…
