Vertra sunscreen Tested and recommended by the Skin Cancer Foundation. Stays on all day long...matter a fact, its hard as heck to wash off after a surf session To remove Vertra I recommend using your favorite facial wash before wetting your face. I like using Johnsons Baby Head to Toe. I dab some on my face, rub in, then rinse with water and it comes right off. Don’t wet the face first. –David

Equipment Review Versa Traction By Keith I recently had a chance to try a brand new product called Versa Traction. This product is not a new variation of the deck pad, but a truly NEW product. It’s a peel and stick traction surface for your surfboard or stand up, and is designed to cover either the entire deck or just parts of your board, like the nose area on a long board or sup. I was a little hesitant to stick this thing on my brand new board, but decided to give it a try. In fact, the only reason I agreed to have it put on my board was because Sunny Garcia has been using it and likes it so much that he bought into the company. Installing the Versa Traction was pretty simple, but took a little time to get it all lined up and to make sure there were no air bubbles. There’s some residue on the pad that needs to be removed before you surf on it, so they recommend scrubbing the pad with a brillo pad and soap before you take it out for the first time. I didn't do this step and found it was very slippery for the first few waves, then it got more grippy the more waves I caught. I had to get used to the feel of a non-wax surface under my chest and feet, and I must say it was slippery when I wore my wetsuit top. It seems like when it comes in contact with your skin it grabs on, but doesn't grab on to fabric. I think that’s a good thing because you don’t have to worry about your shorts or bikini getting worn by the surface of the pad. I am pretty stoked on this product and I’m sure you will be seeing more of these traction pads on boards. I think it’s a great new alternative to using wax. No more waxing your board and then scraping off that same wax (what a waste), and no more wax melting in your car or your board bag.

Surf Travel Mentawai Islands Indonesia By Keith I have been talking to lots of people lately that are heading to the Mentawais this summer. Some of them have never been there before, while others have been going every year for the last 10 years. It got me thinking back to my trip there and how much I’d like to go back. I’ve been there just once in ‘05, stayed 18 days and surfed without a doubt, the best waves of my life. The only thing that’s been keeping me from making another trip there is the travel time and cost. It takes 2 days to get to Sumatra from Hawaii, then another 10-12 hours from the harbor to the Mentawai Islands. The average price for a standard 11 day package ranges from $2500 to $3500 per person, which includes 3 meals and soft drinks, but does not include plane fare. There are also extra costs for travel insurance (a must have), anti malaria pills, board fees, spending money during airport layovers. The waves there are really good... I mean really, really good. I’ve never seen waves like that except in surf movies. There are a variety of waves ranging from super fun and rippable, to gnarly shallow spitting barrels. Out of our group of 6, I was the only goofy foot which worked out perfect for me since most of the waves we surfed were lefts. There’s tons of charter boats that operate in this wave rich part of world so finding a boat is not a problem. The thing I would consider most if you are thinking of going there for the first time, is to go with a group that has gone before. Usually these guys know a good boat with a good captain that can get you to the best spots with the best conditions. The captain that we had has been driving boats there for 20 years, so he knew all the spots and when they would be working, so there was no wasted time checking a bunch of spots. We pretty much showed up and the place was going off, which is really what you want because the next spot could be 40 minutes away. You are pretty much guaranteed to score in the Mentawais. Out of the 18 days that I was there I had at least 10 days of perfect surf! I was pretty much satisfied after the first week, and any other good day of surf after that was just a bonus. Bottom line is if you want to get the best waves of your life, go to the Mentawais. I think every surfer should experience that place at least once. We offer a Mentawai package as well. The 72’ Oasis is a brand new boat that’s owned by guys from the Big Island. Check our website for booking info or www.surfinindonesia.com

Length: 6’6" - 9’ The Anchovy - A swallowtail design that creates added flex in the tail. Usually used on longer Alaias for fuller, mushier surf. This kind of surf usually breaks in deeper water and requires more paddling. A longer slightly thicker board helps with paddling. Typically with added thickness you sacrifice flexibility, but the cut in the tail decreases rigidity and increases the flex that is so important in the Alaia. Length: 5’5"- 7’0" The Stuth - Developed in Noosa by Jacob Stuth, and the Ausie Crew of Wegener Surfboards. This board is for performance and trick surfing. The Stuth model features a Parabolic outline and concave bottom. It rides much like a snowboard. Think carving in powder. This board is a favorit of proficient, progressive Alaia riders.
