For October we have lots of events planned. Our sample sale/swap meet is coming up on the 3rd. Sell or trade your unused and unwanted surf related gear. To reserve a space you must register by calling us before Oct 2, and the cost is $5 per person. You will have to bring your own tent, tables, and chairs. Companies like O’Neill, Lost, and Von Zipper will be selling their samples for cheap! What a great opportunity to get some of your Christmas shopping done early. Then on the 31st, Halloween, we will have our 3rd annual blood drive. Make sure you don’s miss this chance to donate and give the gift of life. We have open slots every 15 min starting at 9:15 thru 12:45. You can check our website for more info on both of these events.

Tony Hawk, Shaun White Top Forbes' List of Richest Action Sports Athletes
Well known for its interesting series of "most wealthy" lists for sports, Forbes recently stepped outside of the traditional sports world and released its rankings of the top 10 highest-paid action sports athletes for 2008. The names at the top of the list -- Tony Hawk, Shaun White -- aren't all that surprising, but the earnings (Hawk alone apparently made $12 million in 2008) are nothing to sneeze at, even compared to wages earned by well-known professional athletes.

A brief HISTORY ON the surfboard fin Tom Blake—the founding father In 1934, Tom Blake—-legendary surfer and inventor of the hollow surfboard and waterproof camera housing, among other things—-decided to use his ingenuity to solve the problem of board control. Legend has it that he asked a speedboat skipper about the skeg on his boat, and was told it was to help stabilize the boat during hard turns. One day Blake noticed an abandoned boat on the beach. He took the keel off, modified it, and attached it to his surfboard. At first he didn’t like the sensation, but once he caught his first wave, he was hooked. “When I first went to the Islands, they used wide-tailed boards and they used to spinout on a steep, critical slide,” he said. “I figured it would be easy to correct that problem, just add something - a keel. Finally, I got around to it. You didn’t hurry things up over there. You were having too much fun surfing every day. Finally, I put a fin on the board and it worked fine. It was a shallow fin, about 4″ deep and a foot long. It took ten years for that thing to catch on and then the boards kept getting lighter and smaller and [then] the fin became more effective for steering

The evolution of the fin from Tom Blake’s first prototype was a slow process, sometimes taking two steps forward and one step back. The keel fin that Blake first created was modified by Bob Simmons in the mid 40’s into roughly the same shape that is used today. Simmons was the first pioneer of the multiple fin setup when he invented the twin fin design.
The original 40’s keel fin didn’t come into its own until the 70’s, when Steve Lis used it on a twin fin setup on his revolutionary “fish” design. Lis’ boards were originally shaped as kneeboards with two extended keels that allowed him to rest his flippers and reduce drag, while still retaining the performance aspects of a pintail. The fish shape soon exploded in popularity.
George Greenough is credited with creating narrower fins with more flex, modeling them on the tail fin of a blue tuna. He first used this high aspect ratio design on his kneeboards, but the new fin style was so successful that it eventually made its way to standup boards when Bob McTavish implemented the design into his lighter, shorter boards.
Surfers were still riding single fins into the early 1970’s, but that would soon change. Australian Mark Richards took the new Californian fish design and modified the twin fin design slightly. He then rode it in competitions, stunning the judges and crowds with some of the sharpest turns ever seen in regulation contests. Richards won four consecutive world titles with his twin setup from ’79-‘82, forever changing the direction of modern surfing.
Third Evolution In 1980, surfboard fins would undergo a monumental innovation. In the late 70’s, Young Australian Simon Anderson was becoming known for surfing the giant waves on the North Shore of Oahu. He was frustrated, however, by his inability to adequately control the Richards style twin fin in larger surf. One day he noticed someone who had a twin fin board with a smaller, half moon fin in the middle. He modified the idea for himself, creating a new design with three fins of equal size. Dubbing it the “thruster,” the design has remained unchanged to this day. The thruster design enabled more radical, spray-throwing maneuvers than ever before, and surfing has grown monumentally since its inception.

Taiwan get waves! Taiwan get good waves!!! A few years ago my friends Matt and Margaret over at Bing Surfboards went to Taiwan. When they came back they showed me what they had discovered. Perfect left and right points with only a few people surfing. Matt’s a good source for judging how good waves are, so when he says the waves are good, I know they’re good. Last month I took a trip to there to see for myself what kind of waves this part of Asia had to offer. Taiwan is located in the western pacific between Japan and the Philippines. The best time to go there for surf would be during the typhoon season which runs from summer to Oct. Taiwan is an island so there’s surf around the whole island. I stayed in Kenting which is located on the southern most tip of Taiwan and about an hour and a half drive from Kaohsiung Airport . It’s the perfect place to be based out of because you can drive from the east coast to the west coast in 20 min depending on which way the swell is coming from. Warning: during typhoon season, Taiwan gets hit by at least 2 major storms per year. If you travel there looking for surf during the typhoon season you may get stuck there if a major typhoon hits. Getting to Taiwan was easy but long. We flew JAL into Tokyo (8 hours), laid over for 2 hours, then flew direct to Kaohsiung Taiwan (4 hours). The only thing that sucked was we could only take 1 board each to avoid the outrageous board fees that JAL charges. 1 board is $42 the second board would be an additional $200+. I stayed at Fu Dog Surf, the owner Sammy is from Houston but has been living in Taiwan for 11 years. Our accommodations at Fu Dog were really nice, large rooms with private baths, flat screen TV, refridge, A/C, and all the drinking water you need. I would definitely recommend Sammy’s place to stay and as a surf guide. Without a guide you’ll be driving around looking for the surf spots, with Sammy, he’ll take you straight to the best spots or find a spot that suits you. The rates and more info can be found at Sammy’s website. Surftaiwan.com With so many varieties of waves in Taiwan you’ll never get bored of surfing the same types of waves. You can take your pick, maybe a beach break in the morning and then reef point in the afternoon. Or how about a reef point in the morning, river mouth in the afternoon, and then a beach break in the evening. I think that’s were Taiwan to me, beats out some of the other places I’ve been. There’s so many different types of waves within a half hour of each other, and with there’s the potential for world class waves. The one thing that kind of got to me was the heat. It was 92 degrees with 90% humidity everyday. Some days I couldn't stand being outside and had to retreat to my room where we had the A/C pumping 24 hours a day. And there are things like the nuke power plants water discharge being let out in the ocean right a Nan Wan. But what the heck we surfed that spot a few times and none of us is glowing yet. The food to me was ok. Some stuff was good some not so good. We got most of our meals from the local 711. The 711’s there are like the ones in Japan. They sell all kine stuff like bentos and musubis and it all taste good. Some of the food shops that lined the streets were good while others I wouldn't dare try, talk about mystery meat.
