and the incorporation of plants for healing. Cannabis has had a history of healing properties for over 5000 years. Medical Cannabis research has shown effective outcomes for multiple health conditions worldwide. In the state of Hawaii, there is a list of possible qualifying conditions that a patient must fit in order see a certifying medical professional to apply for a 329 certification. These conditions include Post Tramatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Cancer, Glaucoma, Lupus, Epilepsy/Seizures, Severe Pain, Severe/Persistent 02

Muscle Spasms including Crohn’s Disease, Cachexia or Wasting Syndrome, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), Rheumatoid Arthritis, Multiple Sclerosis, HIV/AIDS, and Severe Nausea. As a member of the American Cannabis Nurse Association, I continue to follow the most current research regarding Medical Cannabis. In 2018, I completed a program in Cannabis Nursing. In addition to ACNA, I am also a member of the American Holistic Nurse Association which supports integrative healthcare. I have been a LPN for over 25 years with a focus on integrative healthcare - which can be defined as a state of well-being, of mind, body and spirit. Medical Cannabis and Wellness is Integrative Health.

I continue to support and provide educational opportunities to the community pertaining to Medical Cannabis. In August, 2019, I held the first For Nurses by Nurses Medical Cannabis Conference on Maui, which was well received. This event created an opportunity for nurses to have access to medical professionals working with patients and medical cannabis. In June, 2020, through University of Hawaii, Maui College’s Extended Learning, I will be offering a class on Thursdays from 6:00 - 7:30 pm, June 4th, 2020 thru June 25th, 2020. The course is titled: Medical Cannabis in Wellness. Mahalo, Shirley Ramey

PLANT TISSUE CULTURE’. Plant Tissue Culture is a collection of techniques used to grow and maintain plant cells, under sterile conditions on a nutrient medium. PTC was developed to store and supply clean plants for the future! For the future of planet Earth and even for the future of planets beyond Earth. Anthropogenic impacts like habitat deforestation and rising levels of sulfur dioxide are some of the challenges that drive PTC science in an exploration of habitat restoration and germplasm storage. PTC relies on three main principles. First, we isolate plant parts from an intact mother plant. We refer to this isolated plant material as the explant. Second, we provide an appropriate environment for development. This hinges on the control of factors like oxygen, temperature, relative humidity, nutrients, and light. The third principle involves sterility. All PTC labor is conducted under completely sterile conditions. Everything from the tools to the technician must be sterile. In order to imagine the very beginning of a clean virus-free plant, we must start with the initial explant. Visualize a test tube from chemistry class. At the bottom of the test tube sits a small dollop of nutrientrich gel. This gel is called the media and acts as a food source for the explant. Already surface disinfected and chopped down to a small enough size, the explant is inserted into the media, buried at the base for nutrient uptake. PTC is divided into four stages. Stage I Initiation is the most valuable time to address contamination and the release of undesirable compounds. Stage II Caulogenesis is necessary for shoot proliferation. It is during Stage II that we encourage shoot growth

giving rise to a healthy plantlet. Finally, we arrive at Stage IV Acclimatization. In this final stage, we remove our plantlet from inside its clean vessel and expose it to the outside environment until it becomes happy and hardened with microbes. Now, why on earth would we go through all those stages when we can just take a conventional

ANNABIS LAWS ARE CHANGING RAPIDLY ACROSS THE COUNTRY, THOUGH EACH STATE’S APPROACH

TO CANNABIS LEGALIZATION CAN BE VASTLY DIFFERENT. HERE IN HAWAII, WE CAN USE THIS TO OUR ADVANTAGE BY LOOKING AT WHAT DOES AND DOES NOT WORK IN OTHER STATE LEGISLATIONS.

Cannabis legalization is coming very soon at both the state and federal level. It is more important than ever to personally involve yourself in influencing how legal cannabis will look in Hawaii. Hawaii grown cannabis will be in high demand in-state and worldwide once laws change globally. Beyond the year-round optimal growing conditions, we also have an automatic selling point simply from being grown in Hawaii. Every shop in every state will want tropical, exotic island-grown flowers on their shelf. Supply will likely have a hard time keeping up with demand in the global market, which will keep Hawaii-grown flower prices much

the soil and local environments have on the crop. Agri-tourism will also have a huge economic impact state-wide with legalization! Again, much like the wine or craft beer industry, people are curious and want to know more about the people and the farm where their favorite products are grown. Vineyard tours and tasting tours at craft breweries bring in big bucks to small farms and local communities. They employ tour drivers, bar/bud tenders and extra staffing at the farm or tasting room. The opportunities are endless for Hawaii grown cannabis big or small! impact state-wide legalization could create if done correctly. Ask them to support home grows, consumption lounges, craft farms, and no jail for a plant under any circumstances. Let them know the monopoly system does not help the average Hawaiian. They need to know the law should be written in a way that allows for export after federal legalization passes. It’s not a matter of if anymore, it’s when! Recent events at the federal level suggest that it’s coming sooner rather than later. Hawaii sun-grown cannabis is some of the best in the world and I look forward to the day that we can legally offer it to the world market! Ü by Andrew Simmons ISSUE 02

more classically renowned artists. As this current movement creates more of a wave, we are now seeing more frequent features of heady artists in renowned galleries. However, we are still in the early evolution of this movement. Propelled by passion, Mark and Shannon made a huge contribution to the Hawaii cannabis community when they founded the Heady Hawaii glass gallery. Since establishing in 2016, these guerilla curators have hosted events with prominent glass blowers, as well as made appearances at multiple glass art conventions across the country. Although the industry takes them nation-wide, Heady Hawaii still honors their local roots. They vitalize the Oahu glass scene by hosting events such as gallery style viewings and partnering with local artists such as OG Tubes to 20

lead classes. Thanks to these hosts and artists, we can now present you with the reason behind the madness and the drive behind our passion, the art! While in residence, Salt collaborated with many local artists including Who’s Your Gaffer Glass and OG Tubes. ‘Globular Caldera’ is one of the amazing works that was auctioned during the Summer Solstice with Salt event. Who’s Your Gaffer Glass has a very distinct personal style. He creates airy nebulas from his use of color patterns that softly blend in and fizzle out of each other. Gaffer started working with soft glass back in 2003 while doing furnace work: vases, goblets, light fixtures, bowls and cups. He went to Murano, Italy for about a year with some of the world’s most underground and talented artists.

The “Globular Caldera” RipCurl collaboration by OG Tubes and Salt Glass depicts a monstrous volcano shaped body merged with a “Globularshaped lava caldera bursting at the top” as described by Heady Hawaii. There are also eye accents by Salt dispersed throughout the lava flow. Sheltered by this flow and hidden within the wall is the S.A.L.T. Perc, a Salt Glass signature. This beast measures 6” high and 3.5” in diameter. It also features teeth guarding the mouthpiece and though appearing to have a smooth disposition evolves to a textured base to further resemble magma. After an eight-year hiatus, Gaffer had an epiphany that inspired him to hop back on the torch. He started off using a crock pot with vermiculite as a kiln and figured out flame and color chemistry. He eventually found his main material: boro. Gaffer explains his love for boro stating that, “the details we can achieve in boro seems limitless. Though

This community is built around sharing knowledge and interests with others. It’s no different from the more traditionally recognized art scene: everybody knows different artists and likes different pieces. When you converge with everyone in one room, you get a knowledge pool to swim in and further your insight with people who desire to do the same. This is a movement of empowering a subculture of art that has been forced underground for years, the passion of the people is what fuels the flame. A creation in a class all its own, the Zen “Soul Window” Rip Curl created by Salt Glass and Who’s Your Gaffer Glass features a wave like appearance with a touch of texture. The color work features a dichro over stack and Wig Wag design by Gaffer. In the ribs of the creature lies the “Soul Window”, referring to the window exposing the 2-hole S.A.L.T. movements that were once underground now get This Multi-Faced WarpCurl is a piece that carries many entities within itself! A Warp Curl has “a pushed up center base causing the water to sit in a donut shape”, as noted by Heady Hawaii. This promotes the water to function in a unique circular motion. An ensemble of faces structure the neck of this piece, leading down to a region of teeth that protect the lustrous transparent base and dual holed gill perc. Fathered by Salt Glass, this collage of characters features Purple Rain, Haterade, Gold Amethyst, Blue Dream, and Raindrop. Housing a dual hole S.A.L.T. Perc, this being also holds accents of Gold and Ruby on the mouth piece and joint. Standing 7.5” tall and 3.2” wide, the technique and artistry speaks for itself. Heady Hawaii perfectly explains this terrestrial sculpture, the Salt & Danger Visual “Solstice Island” volcano rig: “This piece was originally designed by Danger Visual for our Summer Solstice with Salt show flyer. It was brought to life by Salt! What a stunning execution by both artists. Made with Gun Mount Gray, Silver Strike, Roswell, Timber and Chocolate. There is so much detail and energy in this piece! The volcano erupts a twisting tentacle surrounded by molten lava. The volcano is further accented with a fiery eyeball milli, a row of sharp teeth around the beach, palm trees, and a view window on the back to view the S.A.L.T. Perc function. Also includes a (removeable) burst of lava plugs the 10mm joint. This Illustration of craftsmanship measures 5 inches tall with a base diameter of 3.5 inches.”

to see the light of day. Art is a universal language that has the ability to reach people on impossible levels; and to be honest, this author would hate to see where the Cannabis Movement would be if there weren’t some pretty sick bongs to look at. Ü

UE TO POPULAR DEMAND, I AM OFFERING THIS ARTICLE TO CLARIFY VARIOUS LAWS, RULES, AND REGULATIONS RELATED TO MEDICINAL CANNABIS IN HAWAII. THIS IS

NOT A COMPLETE ANALYSIS; RATHER, ANSWERING THE MOST IMPORTANT (IN MY OPINION) QUESTIONS. WE TRAVEL THE ISLANDS AND CERTIFY PATIENTS ON MOST ISLANDS, AND THE INFORMATION I WILL TELL YOU HERE IS IMPORTANT, NO MATTER WHAT ISLAND YOU LIVE ON.

Will I lose my County Housing (Section 8) if I get a cannabis card? Only if the inspectors find it. The county housing office has no access to the cannabis registry. Therefore, they won’t know that you have a 329 card. Furthermore, even if you show it to them, that is not proof that you actually have ever used or possessed cannabis. Therefore, they can’t penalize you for simply having a 329 card. I’m not sure if county housing authorities are able to seize your biological sample for drug testing without a warrant. Does anyone have information on that topic? Theoretically, if they can, then such would be bad news. I have never heard of this happening, though. The most common reason that people lose their county housing related to cannabis is that they get arrested and charged for cannabis outside of their Section 8 home. Once an individual is a persecuted drug offender, then county housing can terminate their benefits. If, however, a person has their 329 card, then they are at a much lower risk of getting arrested and charged, and hence their Section 8 housing is protected. Just don’t grow plants at a section 8 residence. It is hard to move them when inspection time comes along. So, bottom-line, having a medical cannabis card actually reduces the chance of losing county housing benefits. Who has access to the 329 registry at the Dept. of Health? Only law enforcement, and only when they have reason to believe a certain location or individual has cannabis; also, dispensaries need to confirm that a patient is certified before a sale is made. Employers do not have access to your medical records, and medical insurance

Why? Because good bud is about 20% THC.

Clarification/Addendum: All cannabis containers in a home with minor children present must be childproof. Violations of this law are criminal in nature.

Can I legally make my own extracts? YES, as long as you don’t use butane. Butane Honey Oil (BHO) is a Class B Felony in Hawaii.

Therefore it takes at least 5 ounces of bud to make one ounce of extract like Shatter, Wax, Rosin or C02 extracted Dabs. Realistically though, it takes more than five ounces, as some of the product is lost in the manufacturing process. Law enforcement doesn’t care about that, though. For other extracts, like coconut oil-extracted herbal preparations, the product is tested for its THC content and subjected to the same formula, accounting for the

EET CONTEMPO SPECIALTY PACKAGING, A COMPANY THAT WE CAN ALL GET EXCITED ABOUT. As consumers, it’s important to think about the waste

that is being created when purchasing our medicine’s packaging. Plastics can cause staggering damage to the environment. Sustainability is more important than ever and must start becoming a norm. We are more than excited to see this happen. Let’s start by making a good choice, let’s change our conversation on being Sustainable, it’s no longer a question of ‘if we should’ but rather a question of ‘how we do it’. Contempo realizes the importance of creating sustainable packaging to hold our medicines, knowing that the containers won’t be held for long and will soon be disposed of. Contempo use a number of innovative raw materials in their 30

manufacturing so that the packaging decomposes in a safe way. They are working on several options which will be home compostable! With a history in the fashion industry, Contempo’s jars are beautifully designed and can be personalized for any type of business that would need them. They fulfill wholesale as well as private orders. In Christmas 2019, Contempo unveiled the latest additon to their product line: the child-proof jar called The Industry Jar. They’ve proven that child proof doesn’t mean giving up on style. Be sure to check out The Cannabis Packaging Show, Contempo’s educational YouTube channel that breaks down in-depth the sustainable options of packaging manufacturing. Which I highly recommend.
