IN MEMORY OF MOMO

IN MEMORY OF MOMO Aloha, we are Hawaii Cannabis Magazine (HCM), formerly known as The Cannabiz Review. We are a local publication based in the upcountry of Maui. We focus on sharing stories from Hawaii’s cannabis community, featuring original content and images that showcase Hawaii lifestyle and culture from the islands of Oahu, Big Island, Maui, Kaua’i and Moloka’i. Please join us as we celebrate the release of our first issue of Hawaii Cannabis Magazine, showcased at the 2019 4th Annual Hawaii Cannabis Expo on Oahu. Mahalo for your support as we dedicate Issue 01 to Monique Tong. Momo was a beautiful spirit that our community will dearly miss. 02

|

Please take a moment to read some kind words written by Monique’s best friend Leilani Zerkle. Monique, Oh Monique... I can go on & on my best friend... She was the kind of girl that would take you for an adventure, the kind you would never forget, whether it’s being mermaids on an abandoned beach, taking bong rips in a 100 year old Banyan Tree, or talking about LIFE, she always had the best advice. I can still hear her beautiful reminders & her laugh… Momo was my favorite smoke buddy. She always had her purple Zong named Ezmerelda on her & ready to go! We would go exploring all around Maui & take the most unique photos! She was the perfect model! Monique was a very strong lover & advocate for Cannabis; always teaching, preaching & medicating, she was a true stoner girl with real knowledge. We would always have a blast on our Cannabis photoshoots! These are memories that will last a lifetime. I love you Momo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -Leilani Zerkle

HAWAII CANNABIS TV

We’re looking forward to the launch of HCTV! What inspired the creation of Hawaii Cannabis TV and what are the goals of the show? HCTV is intended to be an informative and educational forum focusing on the benefits and positive aspects of cannabis. Medical cannabis patients, health professionals, entrepreneurs, lawmakers, and other cannabis advocates will be interviewed and share their stories for our HCTV viewers. The cannabis renaissance inspired the need to change the current negative stigma that some associate with cannabis. Adult-use legalization is inevitable in my opinion, and our show will hopefully help educate those who know little about hemp, medical cannabis, CBD, and other popular forms of cannabis. We want Hawaii Cannabis TV to become an important resource for people around the world, and position Hawaii as a leader in the global cannabis world. HCTV can also be a cannabis-related advertising venue for entrepreneurs involved in this growing multibillion dollar industry.

Today, we welcome the fact that dispensaries are now open state wide and Hawaii is on the march towards recreational cannabis. Thank you to Hawaii Cannabis Care and Dana Cicone for hosting this year’s 4th Annual Hawaii Cannabis Expo)

DANA CICONE

What are your goals and hopes for the expo and is it open to the general public? How do you feel about hosting the first cannabis expo, here in Hawaii? Hawaii Cannabis Care was something I started to help get more people involved in the Hawaii Cannabis movement. After attending the 2011-2014 Hawaii legislative sessions pertaining to medical cannabis I realized why dispensaries weren’t getting passed into law. In my opinion, it was because not many people showed support of the Cannabis movement at these meetings. The two groups fighting for the Island chain was The Medical 10

After watching and listening for one year, I introduced myself to Pamela Lichty and Rafael Kennedy (founder and advocates for MCCHI) and they inspired me to do whatever I could, to help get this medicine to people in need. In 2015, I was asked by the Department of Health to be on the medical marijuana task force as the designated caregiver (grower) to help develop the Hawaii dispensary program. During my time in the task force, we had our first event for MJ Kaneshiro (Hawaii’s youngest Cannabis patient) and we saw all the great people of Hawaii showing support. Now that dispensaries will be here in 2016, Hawaii Cannabis Care will continue to help move the cannabis movement along, by raising awareness through fundraisers, concerts, expos and educational seminars. We are putting on The Hawaii Cannabis Expo, January 29-31, 2016 at the Blaisdell Center in Oahu. We are hoping to educate more people and we want to change the stereotype of this plant. Cannabis is not only about smoking the plant. There are so many other ways to ingest and take this medicine, like eating edibles, using tinctures or using hash oil. At the expo, we will be doing demos and classes teaching people how to grow and all the different ways to utilize the plant. We have vendors from the mainland and Hawaii selling and show casing their products. It’s open to the public and we are preselling tickets at local destinations.

Some argue it is the most limiting element for plant growth, but don’t let that limit you! For farmers and gardeners, it can be difficult, trying to determine if our environmental nitrogen is accessible for agricultural use. This confusion has brought scientists to the creation of noxious chemical fertilizers, in their poor attempt to expand upon natures intricate nitrogen-fixing process.

HERMIE: TO SEED OR NOT TO SEED 04

EMINIZED SEEDS ARE ALL THE RAGE NOWADAYS. THEY ARE GREAT IF YOU WANT TO CLONE THEM OR GROW THEM OUT AND HARVEST THEM; THEY ARE TERRIBLE FOR

MAKING MORE SEEDS. WHY, YOU MAY ASK, ARE FEMINIZED PLANTS TERRIBLE FOR MAKING SEEDS? HERMAPHRODITIC OFFSPRING, THAT’S WHY!

I refer to hermaphroditic plants as being “Hermie”, though I have heard other terms such as “Herm”, “Mahu”, and a few others. They all mean the same thing: One plant that has both male and female flowers on it. Generally speaking, this means that the plant will pollinate itself and become a seedy bud. Who wants seedy buds, if you want to use the bud? Nobody! Seeds are terrible in terms of making a nice quality product. OK, now that I have had my rant, and gotten your attention, I will provide you with some detail. Why do feminized plants make Hermie seeds if you pollinate it with your own male plant? The answer is because the feminized seeds are actually Hermie themselves. You see, the seed-banks create feminized seeds by taking a super good, juicy female and treating her with chemicals to force her to pop out male flowers. That plant, once it pollinates its own self, creates seeds that are all essentially a clone of itself (female), and at the same time passing on the tendency to be self-pollinating. Given that all of the seeds are guaranteed to be female, therein lies a valuable product for growers who want to have a mother plant for cloning, or not worry about male plants if they grow the feminized seeds out to finish. The first generation of feminized plants rarely (but will occasionally) be Hermie. However, if that feminized line is crossed with a native male of any sort then there is a very high probability that the offspring will be Hermie. Some seed-banks sell only feminized seeds, so that customers will be forced to buy seeds from them every time. This is kind of like the genetic modification that food-seed producers do, just without the direct genetic code DNA cut-and-splice. I foresee that this type of seed will become more and more prevalent, as seed-sellers attempt to

plants bred with local males, the male flowers resemble tiny bananas tucked inside the big juicy buds. Unless you know what to look for, they are easy to miss. If you know what to look for you will see them stick out like neon-yellow lights. Seeds that you find in black-market or dispensary cannabis products are probably Hermie, and should not be planted. Also, any seeds that you make from a Hermie plant will also create more Hermies, and also possibly contaminate neighboring plants. Unfortunately, many people have not known this by Matthew Brittain

We are by no means a perfect civilization, but these ‘revolutionary’ type of events, have helped us move past some of the worst times in history. Presently we are facing a global monetary crisis. The fiat currency that we all (globally) agree to recognize (the US dollar) and use as a reference point to value all other currencies, is slowly if not steadily, losing its value and place as an economic safe haven for investors from countries with unfavorable monetary policies and political instability. I have been keeping up with the cannabis industry and watching what has been happening across the nation. In January 2016, I started a Public Relations Business that will serve the cannabis industry and nurture the networks and connections between local businesses, patients, doctors and the greater community. As I mentioned above, my fear is that locals will provide the labor force in this cannabis industry. My hope is that my business will allow me to be a leader in this industry, and encourage my community of medical marijuana patients to do the same. My business is registered in the State of Hawai’i as Kauai Kine LLC. You can find more info by visiting one (or all) of our many social media outlets.

It’s important for Hawaii cannabis industry professionals and supporters to reach out to let our politicians know that Hawaii is ready to join all the other states that have already legalized cannabis for responsible adult use. This is a very exciting development in Hawaii cannabis legalization!

2) What is your history with cannabis and why is cannabis important to you? Cannabis is an important natural medicine that has benefited humans for thousands of years. I feel strongly that cannabis was wrongly made illegal and portrayed as a dangerous drug many years ago because of the gnarly War on Drugs. It’s high time for cannabis legalization to move forward. I feel strongly that cannabis is an absolutely amazing natural alternative to pharmaceuticals. It’s time for people to stop being put into prison for a natural harmless medicine.

| 3) What did you like most about this year’s conference? I had a ton of fun at this year’s Maui Cannabis Conference! In addition to having a stacked educational lecture schedule with the industry’s top professionals I also loved that we teamed up with Maui Yoga Festival to offer yoga classes as well. It was great to join forces with two health and wellness focused events to offer attendees something different in a fun and lighthearted environment. It was wonderful to see many of the cannabis leaders meeting other professionals and having some really important and collaborative conversations. The Elevated After Party was also a total blast - the fashion show was lit, the music was amazing, I loved hosting an indoor/outdoor ocean front event right with a next level fire dance performance.
