Great Aloha Run Sunday before The Great Aloha Run, I was reading what Carole Kai wrote about the experiences they had during the first Great Aloha Run 30 years ago - with wind and rain making the organizers nervous, it cleared up and the inaugural event went off without a hitch. A few hours later I was heading in towards the start and...it was windy and rainy. The runners stayed dry for the most part until later in the race, and it was great conditions for the 30th. version of The Great Aloha Run. In front Polina Carlson and Thomas Puzey led the 20.000+ runners from Aloha Tower to Aloha Stadium with convincing wins. The Great Aloha Run is a reminder of why we do what we do...participating in races, organizing races, and sharing information with athletes so that we can create a healthy society with great experiences for all levels and abilities. Now it is time to plan the rest of the year, there are many exciting events to participate in, they will help you keep the training up and stay motivated. Happy Training

1) Both the top and bottom held out great for my long run. The shorts did not ride up or bunch up between my legs at all. The top felt very lightweight throughout the run, it breathed well and it felt incredibly comfortable.
1) These shorts may not be ideal for runners whose bottoms are flatter than average. Due to the extra material in the back, the bikini style liner may hang a little.
2) The singlet top is conservative and loose fitted, flattering the body without I had an extremely good time testing highlighting any bit of unwanted extra out this product. The material looks fat. The top well compliments a extremely cute and feminine but I was woman’s body shape. not sure if it could withstand a long run. HILEVEL PROFILE
Karen Elizaga
The year is 1985. I’m teaching a holistic health class to the sophomores at Punahou School. A portion of the curriculum involved fitness – namely, a six–lap run for time. A girl shows up in street clothes with an excuse not to run. Whether the excuse was valid, I don’t know, but I approve it, and the run and life go on. Fast forward to 2014 and the girl is back in my life. She is transformed completely — fit, extremely hip and she doesn’t own an excuse, legitimate or otherwise. The girl is Karen Elizaga, executive coach, author, attorney, wife and the mother of two beautiful children. Through her book, and more important her presence, she brings a gift. It is a blueprint for living a process that involves hard work, through which arises an improved sense of self — a process that allows us, as the book’s title describes, to “Find Your Sweet Spot!” Karen’s client base is largely in New York City, where she has had incredible results working with corporate executives. Despite the geographical differences, we employ many of the same tools and techniques. Namely, the Power of Appreciation (Wanting to be present, embracing challenges and being grateful) and the Need to Adjust: (Performance breathing, positive self–talk, visualization, debrief and reframe). In review of Karen’s book and her history of success, I’m proud of her accomplishments and extremely grateful for the healthy example she sets for us all.
The sweet spot: A place where we are able to find clarity for what we want, the confidence to achieve it, the complete health that radiates from it, the acceptance to embrace challenges, the enthusiasm and endurance to find joy in hardship… and be grateful for the experience through it all! Karen’s process, which she formulated over the course of her career and personal development, is deep and meaningful. Following an elite education and misguided career as a lawyer, she accessed her inner truth and ultimately cultivated the security to pursue the work that nurtures her completely, and the courage to create a marriage that works. Now Karen enjoys a family that has fun together,
extreme fitness, and the capacity to create an abundance of all things important and significant.
In the words of the poet Mark Repo, Karen has learned to “live with things and not in front of them.” She has the energy to be present each moment in her daily life, her own personal triathlon. Her version of the swim–bike–run is broken down into family–work–energy. Somehow Karen has gone from resisting physical activity to embracing it, thereby creating the energy necessary to be a loving wife and mom, listen to her clients, write and promote her book and live the lifestyle that allows her to have the strength and endurance to do it all again tomorrow.
Karen has worked hard to cultivate the confidence to accept challenges while maintaining her ability to enjoy the moment. She finds satisfaction from her efforts and expresses her passion for the completion of the task at hand: “In writing my book I simply saw it done. Karen has eliminated the negative self–talk that creates resistance to being present and stifles growth. She says, “For so many years, I endured a very negative mindset. Because I wanted perfection in so many ways, I shied away from risk and was never enough. And
I never let myself forget that.” Now, Karen feels totally liberated. As she counsels her clients, she strives for excellence, rather than perfection, in every pursuit. She talks herself through with encouraging words throughout the process. With this adapted mindset, she can take on risk and therefore enjoy new adventures.

PUSH THROUGH RESISTANCE
Karen’s seemingly endless supply of enthusiasm comes from her ability to debrief and reframe negative emotions and experiences in her life into positive sources of energy. Her free–spirited nature is grounded in her creative approach to resolving issues and achieving excellent results. “I used to get discouraged – stymied, really – by negative emotions and experiences. Now, I have a totally different outlook. I figure out what I can learn, allow myself the opportunity to feel and push through whatever negativity I have, and then look forward to the next thing.”
BE PRESENT
Karen is “old school” in that she is disciplined and works hard. She is “new age” in that she uses purposeful breath and practices gratitude as she goes through unpleasant experiences. All of this adds up to her ability to be so completely present and to take on the amazing adventure that is her life. “I am truly grateful to have learned techniques that enhance my every day. They may seem hokey to some (I will admit that was my first reaction), but my life is so much better because of the ‘new agey’ stuff!”
Karen is able to choose each moment to focus on training for energy: to maintain a lifestyle based on consuming the right amount of healthy foods and fluids, getting the right amount sleep, and living the life of an elite athlete. Each activity is carefully considered in terms of the energy required to maintain just the right balance of work and play, rest and relaxation. Karen says, “I never realized how much the quality of my food and nutrition, as well as my physical activity and rest, affected my performance and mind-set. Ask the Trainer KC Carlberg, MPH, Owner of Try Fitness www.tryfitnesshawaii.com Aloha everyone. We are just a few months into 2014 and studies show that motivation starts to wane just about now. Never fear, just step back, take a deep breath and know you are exactly where you are supposed to be. It is time to give yourself a break and renew those goals. Our first question here deals with just that – how do I stay motivated? How do I stay motivated? That is a fantastic question and for most of us our focus ebbs and flows depending on the amount of external stress going on in our lives. There are many strategies that can help us stay on track. Find a group. Group training provides accountability. When you’ve got people waiting on you for a workout it helps keep you on task. Furthermore, a group provides additional energy and challenge for your workout. Write it down. Benjamin Franklin wrote his goals on a piece of paper and looked at them every day. When your goal is in the front of your mind, it helps you to stay focused on target. You can write it on a paper like Ben did and stick to
yogurt as being a wonderful addition to a good nutrition. I’m currently doing a greek yogurt challenge so check out my facebook for updates. Now then, studies show that all diets are equally affective for losing weight provided you follow them consistently. Yes, it’s true. The caveat here is that not all diets are equally nutritious. The trick is finding the diet that is right for you and your lifestyle. For example, Jenny Craig and Nutri Systems deliver pre-packaged food conveniently to your door. How easy is that? Easy, but good for you …maybe not. Any food that contains more than 5 ingredients and ingredients that you don’t even know how to pronounce is probably not that great. Furthermore, your body has to break down all this processed mess and in the end the nutrition left for energy and critical body functions is miniscule. Your best bet is to stick to whole foods (fruits, vegetables, whole grains, water). Once eaten, these foods are more readily absorbed and can be utilized by your body for optimal health. A whole foods diet is your best bet. It may take a bit more planning and preparation on your part, but you will see the benefits in your energy level for daily activities and athlete performances.

Westcott confirms that “over the course of a year, that's about 10 pounds of fat -- without even changing your diet.” STRESS When it comes to relieving stress, cardio has the edge here. According to a 2005 study in the European Journal of Sports Science, the headclearing effects of swimming or playing tennis, for example, show up faster than it takes to get a brow wax. Just 15 minutes of aerobic activity two to three times a week can reduce anxiety significantly, according to Madhukar Trivedi, M.D., director of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center Mood Disorders Researc h Program and Clinic. Madhukar goes on to say that if you engage in cardio activities 3 to 5 days a week and you can cut fatigue by nearly 50 percent. "Cardio elevates serotonin levels in the brain, a key neurotransmitter involved in improving symptoms of depression," Madhukar Trivedi, M.D. added. INJURY PREVENTION And finally, when it comes to staying injury free it is a little closer battle, but strength edges out cardio slightly. Cardio’s edge is its repetitive nature. Cardio puts serious pressure on your joints, ligaments, muscles, tendons -- and the cartilage in between. If you've got a weak link, you could get injured, unless you hit the weight room.
your computer, refrigerator, somewhere in your car or your bedside clock. Somewhere you will look often every day. Create a vision board. Cut out pictures and phrases from magazines that best relate to your goal and glue them to any size piece of paper. This is an awesome way to get that visual in your mind. The more clear you can be with your goal – how will if feel when I achieve (insert goal), what will it look like, taste like, sound like. Really get specific. Telling a friend, finding a group or committing your goal to writing or pictures is a great way to stay on track and stay motivated.
Cardio vs. weight lifting, which is better? Ah, the ever eternal question. There was a great article in Women’s Health that addressed this very question. Whatever your goal is, both are beneficial for optimal health. Whether you want to run a marathon, look great naked or just reduce your stress, head to head here are the results of that study: EXCESS FAT
If you are just trying to get rid of excess fat, strength training has the advantage. Although you burn 8 to 10 calories a minute lifting weights, your will burn 10 to 12 per minute running or What diet is best? Last month we looked at cycling and of course that depends on how much

Your best bet is to choose moves that work your core, improve your balance, and force you to bend at multiple joints -so lunges, rows, squats, and presses are all excellent choices. Thus the winner is strength. Whether you want to lose weight, run faster or climb Mount Everest, a personalized program is your best bet in achieving those goals. THORACIC MOBILITY FOR ATHLETES Q: What is thoracic mobility? A: The thoracic region of the spine includes the twelve vertebrae from your upper to mid back. Due to increased ligamentous attachments and structures (i.e. your ribs), the thoracic spine tends to have less motion than the neck and low back. To make matters worse, many of us sit at a desk for work, which causes forward, rounded shoulders, and stiffness in the mid-back. For this reason, improving the mobility of your thoracic spine can be difficult. Q: Why does thoracic spine stiffness cause injuries? A: Think of the spine like a chain: If certain segments aren’t moving enough, the segments above and below will make up for the lost motion. In this scenario, the neck/shoulders and low back tend to have increased mobility to make up for decreased motion in the thoracic spine. The segments that are moving excessively are more prone to instability, which places athletes at risk for injury. Low back strains and fatigue, neck pain, and shoulder impingement are common injuries that can be prevented by increasing thoracic mobility.
Thoracic rotation.
Q. Why do athletes need thoracic mobility? A: Athletes need a moderate degree of thoracic mobility to allow them to rotate the trunk for activities like swimming and paddling. Activities such as running require an appropriate amount of shoulder blade and arm motion, which is more difficult with a stiff thoracic spine. Stiffness in this area places athletes at a high risk for neck, low back, and shoulder injuries. Q: So what’s the solution? A: The foam roller is a great tool athletes can use to improve thoracic mobility. Do these three exercises every day to improve your thoracic range of motion and your posture! Thoracic Rotation Stretch: Start on your hands and knees with the foam roller positioned lengthwise on the right side of your body. Keep both arms straight and reach your left hand under your right arm, placing the back of your hand on the foam roller. Rotate your trunk to the right and allow the foam roll to assist your motion. Hold 5-10 seconds and repeat 1015 times. Repeat on your left side.
Thoracic extension.
Thoracic Extension Stretch: Place the foam roller under your upper back. Keep your knees bent and feet flat on the ground. Place your hands behind your head to support your neck. Keep your okole on the ground and let your head fall towards the floor as you exhale, then come back up to the starting position as you inhale. Repeat 10-15 times. Chest Opener: Lie lengthwise on the foam roller with your feet flat on the ground. Keep your arms straight and let them fall out to horizontally toward the ground. Hold 30 seconds. No fins, hand paddles, or other equipment permitted. SAFETY: SWIM CAPS ARE MANDATORY. Caps will be provided if needed. Competitors without caps will be disqualified. No personal escorts. Lifeguards will patrol the course during race. TIME LIMITS: Swimmers must pass the half way point in the Chun’s to Waimea, Laniakea to Puena, & North Shore Challenge 1 hour 15 minutes. Swimmers not passing half way mark will be escorted to shore. INSTRUCTIONS: 8:45 am. Anyone not present at course instructions will not be allowed to compete.
