loha, my friends. The Hawai’i Symphony Orchestra and I open the door to an enchanted season of glorious music! What delights are in store for you - this may well be our most thrilling season ever. Many of your favorite pieces are sprinkled throughout, along with some amazing discoveries, including the world premier of a double concerto for pipa and flute written for our orchestra by the great Chinese composer Chen Yi. We will welcome back conductors and soloists you have especially enjoyed in past seasons, and we are delighted to feature our own magnificent harpist Constance Uejio along with the long-awaited appearance of the legendary pianist Lang Lang. The HSO will celebrate Leonard Bernstein’s 100th birthday and feature world famous conductor Leonard Slatkin in his HSO debut Wondrous music all season long, but what is the magic ingredient? Maestro Michael Stern, praised for his remarkable artistic ascent as Music Director of the Kansas City Symphony, will lead the HSO in this blockbuster opening of the Halekulani Masterworks Season. Fabio Bidini brings his formidable talent to the stage performing Brahms Piano Concerto No. 2 – a quintessential masterpiece.

Joseph Swensen delighted Honolulu audiences as violinist and conductor last season and returns in a special program that showcases the talent and angelic sounds of our own Principal Harpist, Constance Uejio. Experience the rich Nordic landscape of Sibelius and the early genius of Beethoven.
Jeff Peterson is an artist who lives in the heart of Hawaii’s music scene. He has been honored with eight Na Hoku Awards and contributed to more than one Grammy award-winning project. The Hawaii premiere of his Concerto for Slack Key Guitar and Orchestra promises to be a highlight of the season. Beethoven’s Overture to Egmont and Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 5 will add texture and brilliance to this unique Masterworks event.

Critically-acclaimed conductor, Keith Lockhart has led the Boston Pops for two decades and is in his seventh season as Principal Conductor for the BBC Concert Orchestra. In his HSO debut, he will lead a program that celebrates Leonard Bernstein’s 100th anniversary year and his remarkable passion and genius.
Chen Yi’s Concerto for Flute & Pipa will receive its World Premiere on this program that is imbued with Eastern influences. Griffes “Pleasure Dome” is filled with dynamic change and vivid musical landscapes. Stravinsky and Borodin build on the rich tapestry of color and light that rises in the east.

Audience favorite, Victor Yampolsky, makes his third HSO appearance with this stunning program. “I Got Rhythm” Variations was Gershwin’s last concert piece and is filled with lighthearted magic. Sara Davis Buechner will perform this and the popular Rhapsody in Blue. Add a touch of Mendelssohn and we have a recipe for a truly extraordinary program.
Tchaikovsky, Glazunov, and Stravinsky are three glittering composers who have moved dancers across the stage for millions of ballet fans. The program begins with Tchaikovsky’s hauntingly beautiful Swan Lake Suite. Then violin sensation, Esther Yoo, makes her Hawaii debut performing Glazunov’s high-spirited concerto. Stravinsky’s Petrouchka, filled with color and movement, is the perfect finish for this moving concert.

Maestro Naoto Otomo returns to conduct the orchestra once again and will be joined by acclaimed pianist, Philippe Bianconi. Bianconi will perform Schumann’s Piano Concerto in A minor in a program that also includes jewels by Mozart, Brahms and Wagner.
Internationally acclaimed conductor, Leonard Slatkin, will guide audiences through a powerful program that pairs Finland’s Elina Vähälä with Finnish master composer, Jean Sibelius. The Violin Concerto is filled with rich textures that evoke a Nordic spirit and showcase the violinist’s precision and skill. The glorious Symphony No.2 by Brahms rounds out this Masterworks offering.

The Season finale brings drama, excitement, and Tchaikovsky. The Russian composer’s Symphony No.5 is filled with emotion and tension that bursts forth in the very last movement. Olga Kern performs Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No.1 in B-flat minor. The finale offers Olga the brilliant virtuosic opportunity that ends with absolute pyrotechnics.
