Artists have created work on the theme, “Transformation of society or transformation of self” and how this is perceived in a creative sense. Inspired by the idea of the caterpillar transitioning from a “belly crawler,” isolated and alone—taking shape in a cocoon of her own protection or the protection of others—into a magical creature able to fly free with a changed perspective on her own life and potentialities. Emi Hart EMI HART

Hawaii born singer & songwriter Emi offers listeners a fresh viewpoint into the mind of a real girl stuck in a plastic world. Her songs reflect on a life full of lame ex-boyfriends, lessons in self-acceptance, female moodiness and a sincere love for nerdy boys. A champion for real beauty and underdogs everywhere, Emi will touch your heart with laughter, honesty and love.

Hope has been penning songs for over a decade, many of which have been recorded and performed by award-winning musicians. She has quickly become a mainstay in Honolulu’s emerging Chinatown art and music scene, and is considered to be one of Hawaii’s most sought after performing songwriters.

SIMPLE SOULS & FRIENDS

Simple Souls holds it down with a killer list of songs. Both members add flavor to the group. Zaysha, with a voice that was destined for rock ‘n’ roll, is the duo’s powerhouse. In early 2007 architect Guy Jennings was diagnosed with brain cancer. Upon word of his father’s illness, Guy’s son Grey returned to the house where he grew up to help his family. In the nine months that followed, Grey watched the father who had fed him as an infant, struggle to hold a spoon; the mentor who had taught him draw, lose his ability to design; his hero who shared the secrets to mending a broken heart, fail to form cognitive thoughts. Songs began to appear in Grey’s notebooks and served as a release and an escape from this period. In an attempt to disguise these notebooks that held his

ugly recollections of brain cancer, Grey labeled them Shopping List. Soon, a group was formed. Eric Pecoraro’s fierce skill on percussion and Toni Wong’s feverish techniques on bass, seamlessly integrated into these songs, emphasizing their meaning. Understanding how ineffective preaching to an audience is, Shopping List practices subtlety on the topic when performing and let the songs do the speaking. The band plays music with no interest in any capital growth, but rather takes anything they make and applies it to organizations funding the research and treatment of brain cancer. Shopping List destroys cancer with music.

Learn the simple and beautiful tools of heartfelt communication for lovers, family, friends and more. Council is a time-honored means of authentic and heartfelt communication. This circular dialogue has been practiced throughout the ages. Its modern application can be found in many places where a deeper conversation is desired. From intimate relationships, to family gatherings, from classrooms to boardrooms, Council creates community. It offers its participants a safe and sage environment in which to open up and share thoughts and feelings. This extraordinary exercise in the art of listening holds the key to being heard. Please join Bonnie Tamblyn in a Council circle and share your story. We will explore the basic principles of listening and speaking from the heart, creating community, and reconnecting to the power of the Voice of the Circle.

FILM PREMIERE & GIRL PARTY

Thursday Nov.

Soraya, born in Brooklyn in a working class community of Palestinian refugees, discovers that her grandfather’s savings were frozen in a bank account in Jaffa when he was exiled in 1948. Stubborn, passionate and determined to reclaim what is hers, she fulfills her lifelong dream of “returning” to Palestine.

Once there, slowly she is taken apart by the reality around her and is forced to confront her own anger. She meets Emad, a young Palestinian whose ambition, contrary to hers, is to leave forever. Tired of the constraints that dictate their lives, they know in order to be free, they must take things into their own hands, even if it’s illegal. This is a Hawaii Premiere you won’t want to miss

Historical Context 2008 marked the 60th anniversary of the Nakba, the ethnic cleansing of Palestine. In May 1948, Israel was declared a “Jewish state” despite the fact that the majority of the indigenous population consisted of Palestinian Arabs, Christians and Muslims. Zionist leader David Ben Gurion instituted Plan Dalet in order to change the demographic makeup of historic Palestine and secure physical control over the territory. As a result, thousands were killed and approximately 75% of the total Palestinian population, over 780,000 people, was expelled and dispossessed of their homes and land. More than 530 Palestinian villages were depopulated and/ or completely destroyed, either bulldozed to the ground or bombed from the air. And, the world’s largest and longest-standing refugee population was created. To date, Israel continues to refuse the right of the refugees to return home, in violation of the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 194, and legitimizes the dispossession of Palestinian lands, houses, property and businesses offering no compensation for what was lost in 1948.

The jerk split, the concert rocked on. Pretty cool in our “book of cool.” If you don’t have fun at this concert, there’s something wrong with you.

About the Artists

NICKI P.

Nickie P. (a.k.a. Sick Nick) has pleased crowds all over the midwest. Nickie was primarily trained in classical, Broadway and Italian Opera, but Nickie found her true passion in Hip Hop music at the young age of 14. In 2002, Nickie became a member of her brother’s Hip-Hop crew and, in 2009, Nickie signed with Daleth music group from Southfield Michigan and put most of her focus and drive into finishing her first solo project “The Glitter Wars” (2009). Nickie is currently recording and performing around the U.S. For more info on Nickie P., visit: www.myspace.com/nikkipakasicknick www.myspace.com/sevenchakraz7c www.dalethmusic.com & www.nickiep.com

Dirty Genes

“Hold tight to what is right, you gotta use your voice and follow through. Time and knowledge and shifting masses will sway attitude, and those bigots will be hanging their head real soon.” ~ from the song Red Tide by 86 List, written by Josh86 (also lead singer of Black Square) BLACK SQUARE

Black Square’s sound is a blend of ska and reggae delivered with the urgency and intensity of punk rock. As reggae music was the backdrop for these Hawaii raised punk rockers, the sound of Black Square came about organically from their musical and geographical upbringing. The band’s name comes from the Russian artist Kasimir Malevich’s 1915 painting of a black square. The theory behind the painting was that the material matter of art was without value and the true value in a work of art was in the feeling it expressed or provoked— without leading the viewer to a specific object based reflection. Black Square seeks to do the same with their music. The band includes Josh86 on guitar, Taylor on Bass, Brian Kim on drums, T.R. on alto sax, and G-Bone on the trombone, Babyface McEvan on tenor sax, and Jonny Boto on trumpet.

DIRTY GENES

A Honolulu-based collective who have no limit to where they take their music. They started writing original music 4 years ago in the UH Manoa dorms with a gamer headset and computer program to record guitar, bass, melody, pretty much any musical idea that came to their heads. They have since infused HipHop, Dub, Roots/Foundation, Drum N Bass, Rock, Jazz/Fusion, Funk, Dubstep, Progressive, and Electronic elements with their music. Don’t be surprised if they have a 30 second disco or country breakdown within a Hip-Hop song. Dirty Genes is a 5-piece band consisting of: Spitzberg (MC, percussion), ADD (Bass), Dr. Dubnstein (Guitar), Ranking K. (Drums), KoKey (Keyboard, Sax).

www.girlfesthawaii.org | 8

HELL CAMINOS

Following countless U.S. tours, he Hell Caminos have returned home. For 6 years, The Caminos have constantly pushed barriers and torn down walls in Honolulu’s underground music scene. Easily moving from swing to rockabilly to punk, they show you what its like to live on caffeine and sleep deprivation. Their music is astounding. Profound, Dark, Imaginative, all abound with the energy they use to convey their message. Best known for their manic live shows, they embrace showmanship like no other. They will burn a hole through the stage and a hole through your brain. The band includes: Michael Camino - Upright Bass, Nick Danger - Guitar, Handsome Jack - Standup Drums.
