harles and Frank Springer founded CS Ranch on the Cimarron River in 1873. They applied for a permit to build Eagle Nest Dam in 1907. It took almost 10 years of red tape before construction on the dam began in 1916, with completion in 1918. The dam’s engineer was Neal Hanson. One of the largest privately constructed dams in the United States, it is 400 feet long, 9.5 feet thick at the top, and 45 feet thick at the bottom. It is said that eagles built nests on the sides of the new dam, hence the name “Eagle Nest.” The lake that formed varies between 1,500 and 3,000 surface acres. The dam is one of the region’s most important pieces of infrastructure, supplying water for Angel Fire, Eagle Nest, Raton, and Springer, as well as

irrigation water for downstream ranchers. Cutting ice from the lake and storing it in ice houses filled with sawdust was once one of the town’s biggest industries. In 1919, Talmadge D. Neal bought land from Charles Gallagher and put up a building on Moreno Creek at the junction of the Cimarron, Taos, and Red River roads. A post office was established on August 28, 1920. T.D. Neal, the first postmaster, named the town Therma after the daughter of the postal inspector. Annie Haddow, the second postmaster, changed the name to Eagle Nest in 1935. Eagle Nest Lake and Eagle Nest Dam were sold in 2002 by the descendants of Frank Springer to the State of New Mexico.

Y

ou are in the home of bears, elk, mountain lions, and cougars. Be alert! Hike in groups and make enough noise to prevent surprising an animal. Keep children close at hand, not ahead of or behind you. Carry a walking stick and bear pepper spray. Keep pets on a leash. If you see a wild animal, do not run. Pick up small children, face the animal, and back away slowly. Leave room for the animal to leave, and do not approach. Make noise, shout loudly, and make yourself look larger by lifting arms up. Do not feed any wild animals, and keep your trash put away. Wild animals can be dangerous; being smart, cautious, and aware may prevent incidents and attacks.
