Another spring semester has flown by and it’s time to send off another graduating class into the professional world. Class of 2017, we believe in your abilities. You’re equipped with the skills to carry compassion and knowledge into the world. We have faith that you will always look back on these years with fondness: Barbelin beach, the joys of Campion food and of course, the resilience of Hawk spirit. Together, all these little moments make up your years on Hawk Hill. No matter what class year you are, we all can reminisce on a time at St. Joe’s that brings love into our hearts and minds. Whether you are a freshman pointing to a moment that jumpstarted your four years here, or you are a senior looking back at college life, we all have something to share. As a kind of send off, we wanted to share some of our favorite times here. For those of you preparing to depart St. Joe’s and do something greater, we wish you the best of luck. Never forget that you will always have ties to this university, and carry these memories as part of this adventure we call college. My favorite memory on Hawk Hill is... ...joining The Hawk. Since that first day, I haven't been able to stay away. Everyday I feel like I am making a difference; there is no better feeling than that. -Ana Faguy ...when Pope Francis visited Philadelphia. There was such an exciting energy on campus the entire weekend and that was awesome to be a part of. It was such a great way to start my freshman year. -Sam Henry The time I had to draw a nude model for an art class. I remember feeling so embarrassed, but now it’s one of my favorite stories to tell and it always gets a lot of laughs. -Vivian Milan
...Quizzo at Landmark. Never regretted going. -Mark De Leon
ploring Philadelphia, and I loved everything about it. -Becky Hartman
...the first time I hung out on Villiger Lawn. My friends from my suite became friends with my friends from home, and we became one big friend group. It was our first memory together, and I won't forget it. -Charley Rekstis
...the very first day when I met my roommate for the first time. I asked her to get Campion with me and we ate pizza; it was the start of a beautiful friendship. -Kaitlyn Patterson
...joining the Writing Center. It was one of the first times I really felt like I had made a home for myself on Hawk Hill and found a place with such acceptance. Now I get to help people every session and it fills my heart with such joy. -Victoria Tralies ...designing the Crimson & Gray literary magazine. I'm thankful that I was able to work with a great group of editors and create such a unique composition. -Brittany Swift ...putting on a great Night of Scenes with Followed by a Bear last fall. Seeing the work that all 30 of us put into it pay off was incredible. -Rose Weldon ...when I had the opportunity as a cheerleader to travel across the country to Spokane, Wash. to cheer on the men's basketball team in the NCAA March Madness tournament. -Franki Rudnesky ...when I saw Kobe Bryant at Larry's last year. My roommates and I stole his tray as he was leaving and it's still in our freezer. -Nick Mandarano ...joining the editorial board of The Hawk. The atmosphere is great and I love creating something so awesome with such great people. -Alex Hargrave ...traveling to Reading Terminal Market during Orientation. It was my first time ex-
...when Immaculée Ilibagiza came to campus to speak about her life experiences and faith journey. -Luke Malanga ...freshman year when my friends, Sam Henry, ’19, and Mary Kate Tysiak, ’19, told me they were moving in from LaFarge Student Residence to McShain Hall. I was so excited because I lived there. -Kellie O’Brien ...taking photos at the St. Joe’s men's basketball game for the first time. Being on the court with the players and fans was so exciting and rewarding. -Madison Auer ...the snow storm of January 2016. It was the first time I had seen so much snow and seeing all the students with their makeshift sleds was the best thing. -Joey Toczylowski ...the Christmas dinner in Campion, because it's a rare occasion when the food is good and the dining hall is decorated. -Amy Ferrigno ...the first weekend I went out with a group of people that I can now say with complete conviction are some of my best friends. -Mike Zito ...meeting Cheryl LaFleur, chairman of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, when she came to St. Joe's and talked about environmental ethics. -Jarrett Hurms -The Hawk Staff

Letter from the Editor First and foremost, welcome to the 2017 Commencement Edition of The Hawk. I hope the following pages make you smile, laugh, reminisce and maybe even tear up a little. As Editor in Chief of The Hawk at Saint Joseph’s University, I was both honored and thrilled to take on the task of putting together this year’s commencement issue. During one of our first meetings with the Hawk Staff, we decided that our goal for this issue
was to make it for the graduates. We wanted these pages to be like a yearbook: something the Class of 2017 could save and look back at 10 years down the road and remember all the wonderful memories they made during their time on Hawk Hill. As members of The Hawk staff, we hope that you think about the impact your education will have on you. We continuously strive to inform the community around us,
and hope that you will take this knowledge with you as you move forward with your professional career. Take a deep breath, because you're taking another step forward in your life. With all the hustle and bustle around campus this time of year, it is important to remember that it is the students that make this campus the lively place it is, day in and day out. Graduates, I hope that your grad-
uation day is filled with happiness and joy, and I hope this issue helps you remember why you chose St. Joe’s and how you grew to love it. Today is your day to celebrate; put aside any stress and anxiety you may have for the coming future, enjoy this momentous occasion, celebrate being a Hawk and go forth and set the world on fire. -Ana Faguy '19, Editor in Chief

GOLDEN HAWKS Class of 1967 celebrates 50 years since graduation MARK DE LEON ’17 News Editor Saint Joseph’s University began inviting the class celebrating its 50th reunion for a weekend celebration during the Commencement weekend. These members receive an induction into the Golden Hawks, a distinguished group of alumni. This year’s members of the Class of 1967 and spouses of deceased class members return to a different Hawk Hill to partake in social activities, such as a golf outing, a tour of the Philadelphia Museum of Art and a discussion led by Ralph W. Galati, ’70, on his Vietnam POW experience. The weekend culminates with a memorial Mass and an induction ceremony. Finally, the new Golden Hawks walk down the aisle at Commencement in their own caps and gowns. Rich George, ’67, Ph.D., Student Council president in 1967 and former professor of Food Marketing at St. Joe’s, and Frank Sharp, ’67, MBA, Student Council vice president in 1967 are on the planning committee for this year’s reunion. The two discuss with The Hawk their experience working on this event as well as on the changes they have seen at Hawk Hill. MD: In coming together and planning this celebration, what have you noticed that has changed the most about St. Joe's since you graduated, whether it be the size of the campus, any change in focus of ideals, the types of programs and opportunities it offers, or anything else? Richard George: "First, the size of the campus was small and the size of the student body was about 1500. In addition, in 1967 we were still all male, mostly commuter, confined to a couple of classrooms. Most of today's majors were in place and food marketing was only one year old when we arrived on campus in 1963. Also, a number of our classes were still taught by some terrific Jesuits who were part of a caring, professional faculty. We were in school at the height of the Vietnam War knowing our education deferment would end at graduation. Student body not as diverse in terms of religion, gender, and location. We hadn't discovered Manayunk at that time. Most of us graduated with almost 160 credits with 15 credits in philosophy and 15 credits in theology. We were the class responsible for SJU getting rid of the jacket and tie dress requirement for class." Frank Sharp: "So many things. Tripling the student body, huge expansion of the

campus, and the corresponding expansion of the curriculum are the obvious manifestations. In the 60s, if you were interested in a business career at St. Joe's the only majors available we're accounting, econ, and food marketing. No finance, no risk management and insurance, no MBA program. I'm thrilled to see what SJU has done with the HSB [Erivan K. Haub School of Business.]" I was disconnected from St. Joe's for decades as my career took me and my family all over the place. When we landed in the D.C. area in 2006, I began to participate in local alumni events, and eventually joined the National Alumni Board [NAB]. I was deeply struck by the focus on community service and outreach that had become woven into the fabric of the culture on Hawk Hill. Bringing the spirit of Ignatius out of the classroom and into the lives of the student body gets my vote for the biggest
change." MD: Conversely, what about the school has stayed the same or gives off a similar feeling? RG: "Still terrific faculty. Still pride in being a Hawk. Still following the directive of Ignatius of Loyola to be persons for others." FS: "THWND! As St. Joe's has grown over the decades, it has managed to maintain that special, small college sense of community and commitment to the university. I feel this in my interactions with my young alumni colleagues on the NAB." MD What did you take from your education and experiences at St. Joe's that you have kept after graduation and perhaps even up to today? RG: "The term Magis was not in effect 50 years ago, but the concept of striving for something greater was evident in everything we did. We developed life- long friendships

including some of the following memories: 1. Freshmen Dink [caps]. 2. Sophomore hazing including the freshmen revolt. 3. Supremes concert. 4. NIT and St. Patrick’s weekends in NYC. 5. Top 5 national basketball ranking and NCAA tournaments. 6. Palestra games. 7. Midnight raid on Villanova campus. 8. 'Donches kills the cat.' 9. No more jackets and ties." FS: "Rich and I were big into campus politics. In our senior year, Rich was the student government president, and I was his VP. I don't think I realized it at the time, but the learnings associated with serving our constituents, mobilizing people to get stuff done, and engaging with the administration were hugely valuable going forward with life beyond St. Joe’s." MD: What advice or tips do you have for the graduating Class of 2017 as they leave Hawk Hill? RG: "Do what you love. Love what you do. Give a little more than you promise. Give back early in your career." FS: "I met the love of my life on campus, a few weeks before graduation. Here's what worked for me: fall in love, stay in love, stay together." MD What response are you hoping to get from your classmates that attend the events that weekend, and especially from walking down the aisle at Commencement? RG: "Sharing old memories. Learning about their children and grandchildren. Reliving our glorious past, the best four years of our lives, if only for a weekend. I have walked down the aisle as a student and a faculty member. Walking in this commencement represents the perfect trifecta for me." FS: "I think for me, walking with the graduates will be a moment of quiet reflection about the lifelong journey that was launched from Hawk Hill."

An A-Z guide for reflection
26 reasons why you should appreciate your Jesuit Education A: Ad majorem dei gloriam This renowned phrase translates from Latin to “for the greater glory of God.” Whether this has impacted you on a spiritual level or inspired you to act for the greater good, this motto will stick with you through life. Always remember your larger goal and purpose as you move forward. B: Barbelin Hall Barbelin is more than just a building; it is a centripetal part of our campus that reminds us that Saint Joseph's University was originally founded in 1851. This graduating class will not be our first, or our last, and legacy of being a Hawk will remain with you for the rest of your life. C: Cura personalis Cura personalis, the Latin phrase meaning “care for the whole person,” is an important value integral to each part of our St. Joe’s experience. Learning begins both in and outside the classroom; the value of our education is not equated with our final grades but how much we have grown as students and people of a Jesuit institution. St. Joe’s empowers both our hearts and minds to create change in the world and do good. D: Division I Athletics St. Joe's offers many levels of sports, from intramural, club and even Division 1 athletics. Our basketball team especially draws enthusiastic crowds and proud Hawks. Our men's basketball team even won the Atlantic 10 Championships twice during our current graduates' time here: in 2014 and 2016. All of our sports deserve a hand for all their hard work though. E: Experiential Learning The many opportunities on and off campus have already allowed you to gain some insight on the professional world from internships, service learning, study abroad and more. You’ll be thankful for the practical applications that the Jesuit missions ensured during your time here. F: Faith-Justice Institute We are all encouraged to examine the divides and tensions with a mindset of how we can promote justice. The faith aspect of our university encourages a spiritual search for promoting social justice in the world, but there are also secular approaches to these issues as well. Our commitment to the community will allow you to enter the professional world with a better understanding of how to stand up for the rights of all. G: Gratitude Gratitude is an act of humility practiced through community service and our university mission. It can lead us to empowerment as we use our college diplomas to establish justice in communities and share opportunities we received. H: Haub School of Business Valued for its roots in teaching ethical business practices, the Erivan K. Haub School of Business is nationally renowned. Senior business graduates will be leaving these halls with prestigious degrees in a competitive field. Business Hawks, use this privilege wisely. The pairing of a widely respected business-education and ethical practices is powerful and so crucial in a world with times of conflict. I: Ignatius Saint Ignatius of Loyola represents a role model for how we should lead our lives. Education has been a priority, so we should take our liberal arts experience and apply it to the

problems we face in the future. If we can all work towards education and understanding like Saint Ignatius did, then we will be able to expand our compassion for others. J: Jesuit The Society of Jesus has shaped the way we learned due to their appreciation of education. They’ve held us to high standards both academically and morally, but we’ll be able to take our experiences with us to conquer any challenge in life. K: Kinney Center The Kinney Center for Autism Education and Support relates to the St. Joe’s mission of supporting the community. Not only does the Kinney Center provide a space for students to work firsthand as mentors, but
munities they enter post graduation day. P: PSIP The Philadelphia Service Immersion Program (PSIP) may have been how you started your St. Joe's experience. The four day pre-freshman year experience is a way for students to become active community service volunteers in the Philadelphia area, while also becoming acclimated to campus life. Take a minute to be thankful for the breather you got before your four years. It may just give you a little perspective. Q: Quest for Knowledge The hunger to learn more and do more may have been what started your journey at St. Joe’s, and we certainly hope that same fire and zeal have stayed with you throughout
Barbelin acts as a centerpoint for St. Joe's campus (Photos by Luke Malanga ’20).
the center also encourages those with autism spectrum disorder to also experience the magis. L: Liberal Arts Regardless of your major, class schedule or year it’s hard to forget that St. Joe’s is a liberal arts school and for good reason, too. The ability to take tests, manage extracurriculars and appreciate the deeper meaning of artistry are just small parts of what makeup St. Joe’s graduates. Open a novel, analyze some Warhol and bask in the bounty that a liberal arts school has offered you. M: Magis Our motto tells us to do “more” and “live greater.” This Jesuit ideal encourages us to dream big and accomplish more than we even thought possible. Even if we find obstacles in the future, the magis will remind us to think creatively for a solution. Don’t become discouraged, because your education will help you achieve more than you might think. N: Nicoletti Nicoletti Music Studio provides students with a place to practice music. As a liberal arts school, St. Joe’s encourages students to explore their creative instincts and follow their passions. The music department features a few professors from Juilliard, providing a welcoming and experienced environment for students to take part in music on campus. O: Office of Inclusion and Diversity The Office of Inclusion and Diversity may have been updated only this past year, but that doesn’t mean it hasn’t been around for long. Originally titled the Office of Multicultural Life, it has continued to offer a sense of both inclusivity and warmth to the entire university. We hope the Class of 2017 continues to reflect such positive values in the com-
your stay. Sometimes, all of us get a little lost on this greater quest that we have embarked on, but graduation day is a reminder of such accomplishments. R: Reverence Reverence has a spiritual aspect, though not all of us may have practiced throughout the daily grind here on Hawk Hill. Just as you can have reverence for a sacred space, you can also have it for an event or even an accomplishment. By definition, reverence calls us to “regard or treat with deep respect.” We ask you to hold these diplomas and yourselves with such reverence. Graduating from college is a privilege only some have access to. Use your knowledge fervently, but wisely in the greater world outside these walls. S: Social Justice The many opportunities on campus to pop the ‘college bubble’ have allowed us a taste of the social justice issues that we need to remember as we move past the college days. We must do our part in speaking up for those who require justice—whether it’s encouraging religious toleration, accepting those of any race or tearing down the barriers
between social classes. We’re all part of the same community and need to work together to promote change. T: THWND There’s nothing like relishing in the school spirit that St. Joe's will always offer. From the early days of Hawk Hosts jumping in your car during orientation to graduation, take our pride to the professional world. Rely on on our fellow Hawks for help, and remember the hawk will never die. U: Unity We’re a unified school, a body of individuals and a family of learners. From the beginning of your St. Joe’s experience, you inherited the ties of Hawk pride and the bonds of a Jesuit education that will remain with you for the rest of your life. We are unified in hearts and minds and appreciative of other unique identities. This feeling of graduation will carry with you and be what makes you an active citizen of the world, ultimately bringing together others in community for the rest of your lives. V: Vision St. Joe’s mission statement calls us to be engaged and make ethical decisions. As Millennials, we hopefully envision a future where we can overcome the current tensions that divide our country. Of course there will always be obstacles, but all we can do is lead our lives with care for others and fight for the future we want to live in. W: Weekly Service The SJU Weekly Service program, affiliated with Campus Ministry, offers students a chance to connect with our fellow Philadelphian neighbors. Students are encouraged to consider the impact of their actions and reflect upon the social justice mission. X: Xavier Xavier Hall is a house on Lapsley Lane, our favorite picturesque road at St. Joe's. Not far from its entry way is Jordan Hall and Saint Albert’s, along with Claver House and the Women’s Center. These may be tucked back on the Lower Merion side of campus, but each offers a little sense of home to students. Y: Youth Youth, in itself, is ultimately ephemeral. At the end of the day, it will not stop or yield. So we hear the classic “enjoy youth while it lasts”; instead, we call you to use youth as a vehicle to live out your mission. Discernment is not over—it is just beginning. Z: Zeal From Hawk pride to bonding over service, St. Joe’s has taught us to approach everything with enthusiasm. Life is about being “with and for others,” so we should all take a moment to appreciate the present. Graduation is exciting, but don’t forget to take this eagerness with you wherever you go.

A Love Letter to my Favorite Spot on Campus Why Saint Mary’s living room is a hidden gem ERIN MCGRODY ’17 Special to the Hawk As I prepare myself to say goodbye to my beloved Hawk Hill, I cannot help but think about the people, experiences and places that have touched my heart. This past academic year I had the pleasure to serve as the RA for upperclassmen in Saint Mary’s Hall. Not only am I thankful for the residents that have transformed my life in this community, but I am grateful for uncovering the hidden gem that is the Saint Mary’s living room. Although it cannot compete with the physical appeal of Barbelin courtyard, this space is the most beautiful part
of campus in my eyes. My residents and I shared countless memories there ranging from election night coverage, programs, and life talks. It is a spot where the Saint Mary’s family can gather as a community that is completely our niche. The beauty of this space is multi-faceted. From my understanding, the living room used to be the chapel for the Sisters who once inhabited the house. As a result, the common space has a beautiful stainedglass window that provides visual appeal and some religious motivation when study-

ing becomes impossible. The Saint Mary’s living room has enabled me to complete my homework when I am too lazy to walk to the library and build relationships with my residents. We had a Friendsgiving dinner at the long Hogwarts-like-table and vented to each other on those big comfy couches. Essentially, this space is a hangout within our home. It is physically located within the center of the house, but also in my heart. The living room helped me appreciate life’s little blessings such as sharing quality time with another person. Even though sometimes my interaction with someone may be a brief 'hello' in the common space, I have also had the privilege to listen to others’ stories. Bryant McGill, published author and social entrepreneur, once said, “One of the most sincere forms of respect is actually listening to what another has to say.” At the beginning of the year I hung up quotes around the house and absentmindedly placed this quote in the living room. Little did I know then how powerful and appropriately positioned that quote would be for my community. Not only have I listened to residents share their stories, but my housemates have returned this same respect to me. I have shared my joys and sorrows in the living room. Even though the living room may appear to be a random part of Saint Mary’s, for me it is representative of all
the memories I have shared in my final year as a RA. It is the embodiment of community and has been there for me during my final chapter at Saint Joseph’s University. Thank you to the Office of Residence Life for giving me this opportunity, Shawn Washart for taking a chance on me and my amazing residents for making my last year incredible.
Going back in time
A look at the changing events of the last four years CARTER TODD ’19 Hawk Staff
From the moment the Class of 2017 arrived on campus, it was evident that there was something special about “the Magis.” Whether you’re driving down City Ave. or just talking to fellow students and faculty, it’s hard to spend time on campus without hearing about the magis. It seems so ingrained in the Saint Joseph's University experience that one might assume it has been here forever. Surprisingly, St. Joe’s did not begin their Magis campaign until 2013, when the currently graduating Hawks were new to Hawk Hill. As far as sports go, the Class of 2017 enjoyed the overwhelming success of our men’s basketball team during their fresh-
men year when they took home the 2014 Atlantic 10 Championship, securing a spot in the NCAA Tournament. This team, led by current NBA Point Guard Langston Galloway, '14, cruised to a final record of 24-10, the team’s best record in over 10 years. The A-10 trophy was won in a single day, which represented an overwhelmingly successful and entertaining ride. St. Joe’s has also been executing plans to extend the boundaries of our campus. Part of these plans were put into motion in 2014 when campus extended to the other side of Cardinal Avenue. This was to open up our new Wolfington Welcome Center for Admissions as well as the invaluable Career
Development Center. When the graduates arrived on campus, our current President Mark C. Reed, Ph.D., was still at senior vice president and chief of staff at Fairfield University. This graduating class was fortunate to be present on campus on the historic day we inaugurated our university’s first lay President in September 2015. Although much of the Greek life on campus has been around for decades, this graduating class was just getting their feet wet when Sigma Iota Rho chapter, part of Epsilon Omega, opened on campus in 2014. This class of seniors also marks the last group of incoming freshmen who were re-
quired to submit ACT or SAT scores as a part of their application. St. Joe’s joined many other schools around the nation by becoming a test score optional school, a trend that is quickly catching amongst higher institutions around the country. This decision was instrumental in making the application process to St. Joe’s simpler without making it any less selective. Of course, not everything has changed. Among all the things that have stayed the same, perhaps the most remarkable is that through their entire time here, our mascot, the Hawk, has never stopped flapping its wings.

Reminiscing about Hawk Hill
Seniors discuss what they'll miss about St. Joe's KAITLYN PATTERSON '20 Creative Director As the current graduating class prepares to move forward onto greater things, you also should take a moment to appreciate all the memories you have here from Saint Joseph's University. Seniors were asked about what they would miss most about St. Joe's. From friend and mentors to Hawk pride, there's a lot to remember fondly from your time here... “I think what I would miss most is walking to class and seeing 10 people you know that are all smiling and saying hi. I don't think I would find that at a different school and I think that has something to do with the character and friendliness of the SJU community.”-Nisha Orren “Never thought I'd ever say this, but I'm going to miss the library. While not much work went on there, it was always the best to see close friends or check in on distant ones.”- Ben Burns “What I will miss most about SJU is the overwhelming sense of community and the knowing that no matter where you are on campus, you will always see a familiar face smiling back at you.”-Sinead Egan “I think what I am going to miss most about this place is being able to walk around and constantly see people you know and have intentional and meaningful conversations at any moment of the day.” -Thom Pearsall “I will miss being surrounded by passionate leaders who constantly want to do more at SJU. I have made connections that will last a lifetime and that have prepared me for what's next.”-Emily Nonnemacher
Students walk around Barbelin courtyard during a beautiful day at St. Joe's (Photos by Luke Malanga ’20).
“I'm going to miss my department. I'm a history major, and over the years, I've had the pleasure of being taught by so many incredible professors. Each and every one of them has not only demonstrated how dedicated they are to the success of their students, but they go above and beyond what (I believe) is required of a teacher. Personally, throughout my time at SJU, I have dealt with some difficult obstacles that required me to take some time off of school. The support I received from my professors during those challenging times was always overwhelmingly positive, and this is extended to all my professors, not just history ones. The university seems to truly care about the well-being of the student body, something that doesn't al-
ways happen in college, so I'm grateful that my experience reflects that.” -Darcey Paulding “Something I'll miss about SJU is the camaraderie between the athletes of all sports and the instant relationship you share with them. The mutual respect all had for one another is something I'll miss about Hawk Hill as well.”-Prince Yakubus “What I'll miss most is meeting every week with the Women's Leadership Initiative Executive Board to discuss all things feminist and to plan a wide variety of themed meetings, events and programs that benefit SJU women throughout the year.”
- Lauren King “I'm going to miss most living within 10 minutes of all of my friends, walking around campus and seeing all of the smiling faces and club lib- just to list a few. But I think what I'll miss most is the feeling I get everytime I come back to campus. The feeling of returning home and belonging to an amazing place that forever has left a mark on my heart. Fall in love, stay in love and it will decide everything.”-Caroline Cronin “I'll miss my role on Greenfund a lot, as odd as that sounds, events like Weigh the Waste and Earth Month won't be nearly as exciting in my post-grad life. I'll also miss being the VP of Adventure Club and taking random groups of students on adventures on the weekend and driving a 12-passenger van. Overall I'll miss being able to walk around campus and know a bunch of people and feeling super connected to our community. I think I'm just going to miss being an SJU undergraduate and everything that that entails.”-Francesca Simms

The years in entertainment The top dogs in film, TV and music over the last four years FRANKI RUDNESKY ’18 Assistant Lifestyle Editor
L
ooking back on the years spent in college, it’s easy to think about what exactly within the university itself has influenced you. But inspiration and entertainment aren’t solely inside the classroom or around campus. What about all of the nights spent watching Netflix or television with your roommates, crazy concerts in the city, sneaking snacks into the movie theater, or even just jamming out to the latest hits in your car? Clearly, the entertainment industry has an impact on students at St. Joe’s in one way or another during their time here, whether it was through movies, music, sports or books or more.
Maybe you came into school pumped about Macklemore, but are leaving with playlists full of Ed Sheeran, or cheered for the Patriots in 2015 and booed them in 2017. The fact of the matter is that tastes evolve and change, with college campuses being a fertile ground for such experimentation. Not only do tastes and preferences evolve; the way that we actually access entertainment is ever-changing thanks to enhancements in technology. For instance, people have access to movies, shows and music thanks to streaming services and online radio that can be accessed on a smartphone. 33% of adult smartphone users were

Words to live by Six seniors share their mantras AMBER DENHAM ’18 Hawk Staff
W
ords are some of the most powerful tools we have at our fingertips. They have the ability to make us laugh, cry and evoke both the most raw and most simplistic of emotions. They help to shape us into the people we dream of becoming, as exciting and terrifying as that may seem. As the Class of 2017 goes into the world, they take with them their own personal words that have impacted them throughout their time on Hawk Hill.
“Life is a learning curve. As a type-A personality (and someone who takes criticism poorly), I've had to learn to let go of perfection. Not every day is going to be the most productive, not every weekend is going to be the most thrilling ever, not every idea I have is going to be original, not every friendship is going to last, etc. Realizing that I'm a work in progress puts everything in perspective. Like, freshman me would be so, so proud of senior me, and I plan on keeping up with that progressive trend.” –Niki VanAller
“What is so special about St. Joe's is the students that comprise our community. So my mantra is to take the time to get to know every single person who may cross your path. I learned a lot inside the classroom, but I learned even more from watching the people around me grow and change during the past four years.”
“I live by Pedro Arrupe's quote, ‘fall in love, stay in love, and it will decide everything’ as a way to keep my passions ignited and know that by putting love into everything I do, great things can be accomplished." –Aly Homan
“My mantra is ‘Everyone moves at different speedssome people move faster than others, but we will all eventually find our optimal speed.’ We’re led to believe that people start their lives by unpredictable circumstances determining who they become. Students at SJU come from all different backgrounds. It’s awesome that college allows people to come with a clean slate. First I was a chemistry major, and after three semesters I impulsively switched to a music major. I’ve loved music my entire life. If there’s anything I leave this university with, I can genuinely say I’m proud of the person I’ve become.” –Ian Hocson
“My mantra is ‘chill out, you’re just one person.’ My time in college has greatly influenced this mantra. Take it easy, set respectable and modest goals, be yourself and success will probably follow you. I’m not saying don’t push yourself to become better, but don’t set wild expectations for yourself. Be the best you can be and you’ll find satisfaction. By remembering ‘you’re just one person,’ you can view the things you do from an unbiased perspective. I firmly believe that living and acting this way is the best thing you can do for those around you.”
–Grace Kocubinski
–Isaac Schiller
“Do what truly fulfills you, work hard, get up when you're knocked down, share joy and love with others and have fun. It's a challenge to find a balance, but I try to work hard at what I love to do.” –Ray Akers
The prominence of peanut butter A grocery store staple and the emotional connection behind it MAGGIE MCHALE ’17 Hawk Staff At Tesco, a British grocery store chain, their store brand peanut butter costs £1.39 which converts to roughly $1.63. When I was preparing to move to London for my semester abroad in the spring of 2016, I was continuously told one thing over and over again: British peanut butter is terrible. It would feel weird and unpalatable compared to Jif peanut butter. “Say goodbye to your creature comforts.” My best friend bought me a jar of Jif peanut butter for Christmas to bring to England with me specifically for this reason. I forgot to pack the jar. When I went grocery shopping in London for the first time, I surveyed the shelves of Tesco for something that seemed even half-familiar. I finally settled on the absurd: the reduced fat version of Tesco’s store-brand peanut butter. The next morning, I made myself two slices of toast and spread this supposedly sacrilege condiment over it. I coupled it with too-dark coffee and hoped for the best. The texture felt grainy and coarse on my tongue, and the flavor severely lacked to near insignificance. This was not my peanut butter. As time went on, however, I settled into a regular routine. Wake up, get dressed, make toast. Repeat the next day, the next
week and the next month. By the end of my time in London, I had developed almost a dependency on the store-brand spread. For four months, I consumed the exact same breakfast: gritty, low-fat peanut butter on whole wheat toast, washed down with two or three cups of dark and bitter coffee. It became my comfort. At the end of my stay in London, my mother and grandmother came to visit and see the life that I had been living. I raved to them about the peanut butter, and they were understandably skeptical of my obsession. I insisted we buy a jar. I dragged them into my local Tesco, and left with three jars so I could bring them back to America with me. A few days later, my mother, my grandmother and I stood in the security line at Heathrow Airport. It was early, but it was my 21st birthday, so my mood was a cheerful one. I set my bags onto the conveyor belt, removed my shoes and walked through the sensor. Then, a security guard held up my pink, monogrammed backpack. “Is this yours?” “Yes, ma’am,”I responded. I was told that she needed to look through it; something had triggered the system. I complied, but hadn’t the slightest idea of what the issue was. She pulled out my jars of peanut butter.
“You can’t bring these in your backpack. You should have put them in your checked luggage.” Not once in my life had I ever assumed that peanut butter is technically a liquid. The jars were confiscated. I watched in horror and sadness as she tossed them into the trash bin. Heartbroken, I drowned my sorrows in more dark and bitter coffee, but not accompanied by any toast. My mother and grandmother attempted to comfort me, but I felt too upset. Now you’re probably asking yourself, ‘Why the heck is peanut butter such a big deal? Why does it even matter?’ Well, I’ll tell you. This peanut butter matters not because it’s peanut butter (though I do love some peanutty goodness), but rather because my obsession with British peanut butter directly correlates to my experience of living in London. I don’t actually love peanut butter that much where I become hyper-emotional in an airport. I don’t care about eating toast for breakfast every morning. It doesn’t matter that it’s less than two dollars for a jar. Tesco’s peanut butter became an immediate connection to my London lifestyle. I have said it before and will say it again: I have never felt more at home in any place in the world than in London. It physically and emotionally pains me every single day of my life when I wake up and
I’m not there. Nearly four months after coming home, my mom called me into our living room after returning from a business trip in Las Vegas. I asked her what this was about, and that I’d hoped she hadn’t bought anything for me on the trip; after all, my dad had lived in Las Vegas for the last eight years. She assured me that I should be excited I had no ideas of what it could be, so that didn’t necessarily assure me to any extent. She sat down on our living room floor and began sifting through her luggage. Suddenly, she pulled out a gallon-sized Ziploc bag—containing two jars of Tesco peanut butter. I immediately burst into tears; the kind of uncontrollable, gross sobbing that only happens when you’re too happy or too sad or too tired. And yes, I hysterically cried over two jars of peanut butter. One Sunday in April – almost a full year after my trip abroad had ended – I stood in the kitchen of my house on Woodbine Avenue. I took a knife and spread it across two slices of wheat toast; I had just carved out the last of my second jar of Tesco peanut butter. I stared into the empty jar and sighed nostalgically before rinsing it out and tossing it in the recycling bin. I sat and ate my breakfast: two slices of whole wheat toast, washed down with dark and bitter coffee.

Art seniors Katherine Lord, Krista Jaworski and Colin Mallee on inspirations and style evolution
ROSE WELDON '19 Lifestyle Editor
How did you start making art in the first place? Katherine Lord: My family tells me and shows me that it started when I was about three or four years old. I took colored egg shells and made trees out of them. If I had to pick a time and a place where it all started, it would be then. I was at my Grandmom's kitchen table during Easter and I insisted on taking everyone's egg garbage and making something out of them. Krista Jaworski: I started doing art at a very young age, probably pre-school. I was always just very creative and hungry to get better. I started taking art more seriously in high school, and realized what I liked and didn't like to do. Now I'm roped in; I can't stop. Colin Mallee: I actually started out drawing. I would doodle all the time in grade school and even tried to start my own comic series that ran for three issues. In high school I started taking art more seriously and it was my art teacher who pushed me towards painting. I hated it, because it wasn’t the same as drawing at all. I didn’t start to love it until last year when I painted as an independent study. I found that when I painted things that I liked it was more fun. Then this year when I did my senior project I found a way to combine drawing and painting through my graphic style and now I love to paint.
Where do you find yourself taking inspiration from for your art? KL: My inspiration comes from my thoughts. Specifically whatever current things I am processing at that given time. Things I am usually processing come from my past. The memories are events, experiences and even conversations that have severely impacted my life. KJ: I pull the most inspiration from social media and the way people live their lives on and offline. I’m a double major in communications and art, so I've studied social media, and my own experiences intrigued me. Sometimes the way people use their social media really makes me angry, and from that anger I saw potential to showcase these problems in my art. I'm not anti-social media, I mean I'm a very in-
volved user of many apps. But I see people taking excessive measures to gain arbitrary validation, and caring way too much about the results, that it just made me want to snap people into reality and realize they're freaking out for no reason. CM: Mostly anime that I really enjoy, like “Dragon Ball Z” and “One-Punch Man.” [They are] shows that I appreciate for their outrageous concepts that are presented as common place. It’s really amazing how normal some anime pretend to be.
KJ: Just do it. So many people are scared to even try because they've given themselves some standard of what it means to be "good." Just because you can't paint a bowl of fruit that looks exactly like the bowl of fruit in front of you doesn't mean you're bad at art. That may have been what art was hundreds of years ago, but now art can be
literally anything you want. Just grab some paint and do it. CM: Everyone can make art. Even if you think all you draw is stick figures, that is still art. As long as you are enjoying what you are doing, then you are making art.
How do you think your style has evolved since your freshman year? KL: It has definitely become more sophisticated. I think that it is really hard to say exactly how it has evolved, but I have definitely picked up a lot of knowledge that has helped create my current work. KJ: Freshman and sophomore year I mainly did the assignments and perfected my techniques. I drew more and made pen drawings showcasing typography. Junior year I discovered 1) I liked painting and 2) I was good at painting portraits. Before then I avoided faces altogether. I didn't want to paint some flowers for some assignment so I painted Albert Einstein instead from a Xerox hanging in the art room. When it turned out well, the natural next step was to paint many famous figures, and that was fun. Senior year, I kept the faces going, there's almost always a face in most of my work, but I used different techniques to give the same impression. As far as the bright colors go, I did that randomly and since it was way more fun than the colors we see in real life, I kept doing it. CM: I’m more confident now and my work reflects that, I think. I stopped caring so much about what people think of it and really focus on whether I enjoy the piece or not. My paintings have turned into little inside jokes with myself and I love it.
What advice do you have for anyone hesitant to do art? KL: I would say if anyone is hesitant than they must try it, in fact I implore them to. Art has many uses, and in my case it has helped me heal and process everyday life. It can let you express yourself, it can allow your mind to have a distraction and it can give you a sense of accomplishment. Art can do so much for anyone, even if they are not "artistic." I truly believe that it is an important part of life that no one should miss out on. So, basically my advice is to just get started, go and do anything and any type of art.

Hiking at Torrey Pines was a beautiful experience that I really enjoyed.” -Becky Daub, Defense “Our California trip this year and going to A-10s last year.” -Maggie Egan, Midfield “I would say my favorite memory would be going to A-10s last year. It wasn’t even all the wins that made it fun; everyone was so happy and we had so much fun.” -Mallory Grey, Midfield
Field Hockey “My favorite Hawk memory thus far was making it to the Atlantic 10 Tournament semi-finals in Pittsburgh last May. It was a great feeling and a tremendous accomplishment for our program to beat several teams that we had not defeated in a long time.” -Nora McCallion, Attack “The first time going to Manayunk and meeting the team as a freshman. Everyone was so welcoming, and it made me so excited for the next 4 years at SJU with my teammates.” -Maura Monti, Defense “Getting to Hawk Hill in January and joining such an awesome group of girls and coaches.” -Liz O’Sullivan, Goalkeeper
“My favorite memory so far during my collegiate career was being in the Atlantic 10 tournament last spring and competing for an A-10 championship ring. This entire experience as a member of the women’s lacrosse team has been incredibly special to me. What’s even better is that I can end my collegiate career right here on Sweeney Field in May.” -Sarah Smith, Attack
"My favorite memory of being a part of SJU athletics is when my team won regular season of the A-10, and the night before we headed to Richmond we were sent off by warm words of encouragement from Phil Martelli. It was such a unique and special experience and is definitely a moment I will never forget sharing with my teammates and best friends." -Melanie Colozzi, Midfield "My favorite memory as a Hawk is the feeling of game day. In addition, being selected for the A-10 first team all conference was a great memory because it reminds me of how much I have grown as a player and the field hockey team has grown because I would not have been selected without my team beside me growing together everyday." -Kerri Turk, Forward

Men’s Tennis "With myself and my teammates Tristan Boustany and Tim Stierle having won our matches, we only needed one more victory to clinch an upset over George Mason [University] and redefine our season. Peter Dewitt was the last player on, and towards the end of our match we were fully engaged in an electric, cheering atmosphere. After he won the last point, we rushed the court and celebrated our win jumping up and down together, in a true moment of team unity. " -Kyle Chalmers

favorite memories As athletes' four years come to an end at St. Joe's, so do the sports that many of them have played for a lifetime. Some of our senior Hawks decided to reflect on their athletic careers on Hawk Hill and share with us their favorite memories.
The Hawk Mascot “My favorite memory in my two years of being the Hawk was winning the Atlantic 10 Championship and going to the tournament last season. I am proud to be one of only four Hawks that has a piece of net and an Atlantic 10 championship ring. Going to the tournament in Spokane was an experience of a lifetime, and winning the Cincinnati game in the fashion that we won made it that much more special. The best part about that was after the Cincy game ended, Isaiah ”Zeke” [Miles '16] did an interview while we all went back to the locker room. I took the Hawk helmet off since the game had ended, but once Zeke got back in the locker room, the celebration around him was incredible. There were a couple photographers in the locker room and some pictures might have surfaced of me without the Hawk head on, but the joy in the entire team was great. THWND.” -Timmy Parks

“My favorite track and field memory was winning gold watches at Penn Relays after we broke the school record in the 4x4 meter.” -Torey Doaty, Hurdles/Long Sprints “My favorite memory during my collegiate career was all the bus rides and time spent on the road and at meets with my teammates.” -Jack Magee, Middle Distance
Women’s Track & Field and Cross Country “My favorite memory was representing Saint Joseph’s on the national stage at the 2013 U.S. Junior National Outdoor Championships in Des Moines, Iowa.” -Dannah Hayward, Hurdles/Long Sprints “My favorite memory was submerging in the water pit during my final lap in the steeplechase at the 2016 outdoor Atlantic 10 meet. I mustered up enough adrenaline to stumble my way across the finish line in sixth place.” -Julia Jenkins, 3000 meter “I would have to say that travelling with the team to weekend-long meets, because at practice, we are all together but we are working. When we travel for meets, we have ‘off ’ time and we get to spend quality time together and grow to know each other on different levels other than just the track. I would also say that being a part of breaking school records will forever hold a special spot in my heart..” -Angelena Minniti, Long Sprints “The first time we did [assistant coach] Teddy’s “Friday 800’s” during preseason, there was literally a hurricane. I’ve never been so happy to finish a workout.” -Carly Montgomery, Short Sprints
“Joining the track team where I ended up meeting some of my closest friends.” -Kiersten Moylan, Long Sprints “My favorite memory was winning the Atlantic 10 champion title for the 1000 meter my junior year. Sydney (Coughlin) and I made it to the championship race and we ran each lap together and ran the race as a team. I discovered the type of racer I could be that meet. I’ll treasure that memory forever.” -Sarah Regnault, Middle Distance “My favorite memory of my athletic career on Hawk Hill was winning the 400 indoors at ECACs this past indoor season.” -Courtney Foster, Long Sprints “My favorite memories are “Surviving the 10k”; and my last XC race at Van Cortlandt Park.” -June Chiango, Distance “Laughing and telling stories on the way to and from the meets on the buses with my teammates.” -Katie Gross, Jumps

experiences that will last a lifetime." -Darren Weidman, Right-Handed Pitcher "My favorite memories at SJU consisted of the many experiences that I have obtained through the invaluable friendships that I have acquired over my four years on Hawk Hill." -Steve Powles, Right-Handed Pitcher "The Liberty Bell Classic. Hearing the Phillies PA announcer introduce myself and the rest of the Hawks before taking the field at Citizens Bank Park. Winning the game and celebrating twice on the field was incredible. fours years later my favorite professor is... DANIELLE ZABIELSKI ’17 Hawk Staff “Ron Dufresne, Ph.D., of the management department. He’s had the biggest impact on my time at St. Joe’s. I've been lucky enough to have him as an advisor, as well as for a professor twice. He is an amazing mentor and truly cares about his students, whether they're in the management department or not. I’ve always looked forward to going to his classes because I’ve been challenged in the best ways possible. He has helped guide me on a path of success in academics as well as in my professional career.” -Victoria DiNaro, LEO and food marketing double major
“Jenny Spinner, Ph.D., associate professor of English. She's continually pushed me to be my best, and has absolutely aided in figuring out my ultimate life path. I knew that I planned on pursuing journalism, but Spinner took that to the next level. Additionally, she helped me in securing my current job with JUMP Philly, which has opened innumerable doors and opportunities not only in the Philly music scene, but nationally as well. I am forever indebted to her for recognizing my passion and strengthening my abilities.” -Maggie McHale, communications major with English minor
“Tom Coyne, M.F.A., professor of English. He has been the most influential professor I've had at St. Joe's. He's taught me an incredible amount about writing and fostering creativity, of course, but he's also taught me about how to be a good person and how to find happiness. I've never explicitly said it to him, but I look to him as a mentor.”
-Jimmy Wyatt, English major
“Phyllis Anastasio, Ph.D., professor of psychology. Passionate and intelligent, she genuinely cares for each of her students. As a psychology professor, she’s always made her classes engaging and wants her students to succeed. She never failed to remind us that we are all capable of so much more than we think and to not fear the future, but to embrace the uncertainty. The things she taught me will stick with me far beyond my time here at St. Joe’s.”
“Jim Caccamo, Ph.D., professor of theology. He was a tremendous professor who taught me so much about the applications of Christian values and ethics in our current media landscape. He’s helped me become a better person through sharing his theological ideas.” -Kyle Fischer, communications major with an English minor
-Stacey Oakes, biology major
“Decision and system sciences professor John Yi, Ph.D. Yi motivated and challenged me to be a “superstar,” both inside and outside of the classroom. He always pushed his students to be their best versions of themselves and instilled confidence in all of his students. He created a community in the class.” -Daniel Barabino, marketing major
“Tia Noelle Pratt, Ph.D., professor of sociology. She has been, hands down, the greatest professor I've ever had. Her classes made waking up early bearable and made the rest of the day go by a bit easier. I think sometimes people don't understand her because she occasionally gives out tough love, but that's just because she wants everyone to reach their full potential. Also, her jokes are the best.” -Ariana Rivero, English major with a sociology minor
“Theresa Crossan, Ph.D, professor of food chemistry. She made her 8 a.m. class more pleasant, interesting and engaging than any other class. Not only was she helpful and encouraging in the classroom, but she has helped me achieve some of my college goals, both personally and professionally. I'm so grateful and blessed to have had her during my time here.” -Kristen Adams, food marketing major
“GEP lab coordinator Brian Forster, Ph.D. I was his teaching assistant this past semester, and I learned so much about being a good future science professor through watching him interact with students. He's really great at engaging students and making them truly learn and enjoy it, even if they aren't science majors.” -Kimmie Wodzanowski, chemical biology and environmental science double major
“Eric Hoffman, Ph.D., professor of philosophy. Hoffman taught me more about life than I care to admit. I never realized just how many things you could have a personal philosophy about — and just how much it matters that you have those philosophies.”
-Katherine Lord, art major
“Aisha Lockridge, Ph.D., professor of English. What started as taking a class solely for GEP credit turned into the wisest decision I made in my college career, thanks to her. She is a phenomenal woman, with what seems to be a never-ending wealth of knowledge to share. She is wise, hysterical, wonderfully blunt and pushes her students to be creative, innovative and unique in their work. She also has a great way of making herself available to her students, whether they are struggling with academic or personal issues. She is a shining star at St. Joe’s, and I will miss her after graduation.” -Jamie Petragnani, English major with a communications minor

Unsung heroes
Graduates of the cheer and dance teams reflect on their time at Saint Joe's ALEX HARGRAVE ’20 Assistant Sports Editor
Every basketball game, St. Joe’s students come out to see the Hawks dominate the court. When fans come out to a game, there is never a second during which they aren’t entertained. Of course there are two halves of exciting basketball, but there are also timeouts and a 15-minute halftime. This is where the St. Joe’s cheer and dance teams shine. Most of the cheerleaders and dancers who are graduating this year have put four years into entertaining students and fans with little tangible benefit. The cheer and dance teams are not recognized as official NCAA Division I sports, so there are no scholarships associated with them despite the many hours put into practices and games. The graduating members of the St. Joe’s cheer team are Samantha Byron, Nicole Fisher, Alexandria Hutta, Keiya Rankin, and Georgie Streb. Cassie Boone, Stephanie Garvey, and Allison Simpson are all graduating dancers. There are other benefits to being a member of the St. Joe’s cheer and dance teams, as their numbers have increased greatly over the last four years. The cheerleading team has so many members, they are divided into three teams: the competition team, the stunt team, and those that we see at basketball games.
While cheerleaders and dancers are not given the opportunity to receive athletic scholarships, they are still acknowledged by the school. “We have certainly been recognized and appreciated by the school,” Streb said. “We have traveled with the Basketball teams as well as gotten support for our personal NCA [National Cheerleading Association] Nationals. I think every aspect of Game Day helps bring spirit to the school, and I was lucky enough to be part of it.” Something that resonates with the St. Joe’s cheerleaders and dancers is that there are more benefits to doing an activity than receiving scholarships or being able to put it on a résumé, a concept all college students can learn from. “Winning at nationals and placing is worth the cost of not being a scholarship team,” Byron said of her time cheering for the last four years. The graduating cheer team has had their share of success, placing second the last three years in a row at Nationals, and __ their freshman year. The dance team competes at National Dance Alliance (NDA) nationals in the pom and hip hop categories. In the Division I hip hop competition, the Hawks have consistently placed in the top three over the last four years and have also placed in the top three in pom the last three years. Despite their successes, the cheer and dance teams could not receive funds. “The lack of scholarship or any finan-

cial compensation for my time did not deter me from joining the team because it was always just about cheerleading,” Hutta said. “No factors could affect how much I enjoy being a part this program or my passion for cheerleading.” The lack of scholarship has not always been easy for members of the cheerleading and dance teams, as they are required to pay for their uniforms and for any competitions they go to. The financial hardship, however, does not compare to the experience of being on one of these teams. “We put in just as much, if not more, effort than the D1 teams and have to pay for almost everything ourselves,” Garvey, a dancer, said. “To have that kind of recognition from the school where they are granting us financial compensation is something we will always strive for. This team is so
much more than scholarship money that I would still audition over and over again knowing this after these past years.” The Hawk cheerleaders and dancers live out the St. Joe’s motto of being people with and for others, as they do everything they do for the spirit of the community. “In the moment when we are practicing for 13 hours it very well seems that it [our effort] goes unnoticed,” Garvey said. “No one sees that time and work that we put into practice and to perfecting our routines. But when we perform at the men’s and women's basketball games and hear feed back from our peers, family and fans, we know that the time and effort we put in is worth it.” It is hard to imagine basketball games without Hawk cheerleaders and dancers who embody the THWND spirit.
Leaving a legacy
Seniors leave their mark by establishing club sports teams EMILY GRAHAM ’20 Hawk Staff
Club sports play an important role for Saint Joseph’s University’s campus life, and the Class of 2017 has made some significant contributions to this component of St. Joe’s athletics. The most recent additions to club sports include Gaelic Football and Women’s Ultimate Frisbee. Both teams have made their rise in within the last four years and credit much of their success to their senior captains. Gaelic Football officially became a club sport in 2013 and is now captained by senior Sam Giacino. Giacino heard about the team from a friend, attended the first practice, and despite having little prior knowledge about it, continued with the sport all four years. Because Giacino has been with the team since it first started, he has been able to follow its growth and success. “It’s been an intense roller coaster ride, but I’m happy I stuck with it all these years,” Giacino said. He also said the past few years have been learning years, but the team’s original leadership and their determination have gotten them to where they are today. While

the club started out with 10 to 20 people at each practice, it has steadily increased its numbers to 30 to 40 people per practice. They become more competitive and played against the Philadelphia Gaelic Football team this year. During his time as captain, Giacino has tried to maintain the motivation and passion that the original captains had left. He hopes that the team will continue on its upward path after he graduates, and that the current members will keep spreading the word and playing with tenacity. In addition, women’s Ultimate Frisbee
has also come a long way in its first year as an official club sport. Senior captain Keira McHugh founded the team after participating in a Men’s Ultimate Frisbee tournament over the summer of 2016. She had no prior experience or interest in the sport, but after playing with the men’s team, she knew she needed to start a team for women. McHugh got the team approved as a club sport and quickly found that there was a great interest among other female students to join. Although the team is laidback and welcomes all regardless of past experience, they have already played in a
tournament this year against other women’s college teams in the area. This tournament is one of McHugh’s favorite experiences from being on the team, and she is extremely proud of how her teammates played despite competing against more successful teams. Although it was still a learning experience, McHugh said their opponents were supportive of them, and they were able to keep up. “That really says something about the community and Frisbee culture,” McHugh said. “They’re really supportive, understanding, and welcoming.” McHugh has formed the team atmosphere under positive values, and she hopes this continues after she graduates. “I hope that it stays this energetic,” McHugh said. “I hope that everyone is excited to come to practice and is making friendships on the team.” Friendship and community are two important parts of the team that make it what it is, according to McHugh. She hopes that women looking to join the team will feel empowered and find a campus family through the opportunity. These two sports encompass the spirit of club sports, and their successes are another legacy left to us by the Class of 2017.

Two-timers
Hitting rewind on the 2014 and 2016 men's basketball championships NICK MANDARANO ’18 Sports Editor For the first time in program history, Saint Joseph’s University men’s basketball has a class that can claim to be two-time Atlantic 10 champions. The Classes of 2016 and 2017 now boast rings from the 2014 and 2016 championships. St. Joe’s defeated Virginia Commonwealth University by a score of 65-61 in 2014. Langston Galloway, ’14, led all scorers with 19 points. The season closed with a controversial overtime loss to the eventual
champions in the University of Connecticut in the first round of the NCAA tournament. St. Joe’s defeated VCU again, this time by a score of 87-74 in 2016. Brendan Casper and Javon Baumann, both juniors at the time, along with the Class of 2016, became the only Hawks in history to decorate a second finger with a championship ring. The Hawks made it one round further in the NCAA tournament this time around. In the first round, Isaiah Miles, ’16, hit a three from the wing to put the Hawks up two points against the University of Cincinnati with 7.3 seconds remaining. The

Hawks held on for the win and advanced to play Oregon University in the second round of the tournament, where their season came to an end. “They have a wonderful team character, and they have been like this since August,” Martelli said to SJU Athletics of his squad following the win. “They went
step-by-step and let us coach them. It’s a special achievement for that group, especially for the older guys.” The Hawk family extends their gratitude and appreciation to two-time Atlantic 10 champions Brendan Casper and Javon Baumann.
The juniors and seniors of the 2016 men's basketball team show off their two A-10 championship trophies.
