Letter From the the Editor:

After a tumultuous four years, I am incredibly honored and excited to say that we, the class of 2023, have made it. Through all the challenges we have faced, we now get to celebrate all our accomplishments, together.

This special commencement issue of The Hawk gathers our memories and successes as we get ready to “go forth and set the world on fire.” In these pages are reminders of all we have accomplished and endured over the past four years, as we bore witness to historic change in the world.

The class of 2023 has had to adapt to far more than we ever could have anticipated. We started our first year with the usual post high school anxieties, but ended up having to pack our bags after spring break to take classes online during a global pandemic. Sophomore and junior years were spent in the shadow of

waves of covid, and, while we have seen the end of mask mandates over the past year, covid has not gone away.

But, despite the many challenges we were still able to successfully plan events, set up virtual hang-outs and form connections through our screens. Clubs and organizations survived the transition from in-person to online then back to in-person because of their leadership skills and committed members.

Ultimately our time at St. Joe’s has not been defined by a global pandemic. Instead, we have seen our campus expand through merging with the former University of the Sciences and laying the foundation for a merger with Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences. Hawk Hill is being renovated before our eyes and will continue to change for incoming students. Whether or not we recognize campus, we will have left our

mark on it.

The Hawk’s reporting has helped guide our campus community through these momentous changes, prompted tough conversations about injustices, and provided reliable information and news to the St. Joe’s community. We have also been here to share moments of success and connection, and the efforts of those who have worked hard to make our campuses better places for all.

As we get ready to leave campus for the final time as students, we hope this issue allows you to remember your best times on Hawk Hill and the University City campus, and inspires you to take on the world beyond with the same courage and confidence. THWND!

CHANGEMAKERS CENTER FOR INCLUSION AND DIVERSITY

Alaina Head

Denver, Colo.

Sophia Pringle Philadelphia

Co-Presidents of Black Student Union, Hawk Hill

After witnessing the leadership of older students in the Center for Inclusion and Diversity (CID), Sophia Pringle and Alaina Head knew they wanted to follow their example.

As the co-presidents of the Black Student Union this year, Pringle and Head sought to make the CID an inclusive space for all students.

“I really wanted to help mold the experience for people that are in the CID and others in general and just help create an inclusive place on campus,” Pringle said.

That was Head’s goal as well: “trying to make [the CID] an inclusive space as well and bring different grades together, especially since covid.”

Daniella Campos

Queens, N.Y.

President of Latinx Student Association

For Daniella Campos, it was always about building a community and helping to make a change through St. Joe’s Center for Inclusion and Diversity (CID).

“I was really inspired by the ambassadors and mentors, seeing how much they were involved on campus,” Campos said.

In order to bring the CID and Latino students on campus closer together, Campos joined the Latinx Student Association and eventually became president.

“It was my way of being able to be a leader and also create more events and more of a community within SJU,” Campos said.

Maryjane Okonji Silver Spring, Md.

Director of Recruitment (Sincerely, SJU), Ambassador (Running Start), Secretary for Inclusion and Equity (Student Senate)

After participating in the Running Start program, an early arrival program for entering first-year students that is focused on supporting students from diverse backgrounds, Maryjane Okonji knew she wanted to follow in her leaders’ footsteps at St. Joe’s CID.

“After doing Running Start, I got more involved in the CID and just loved everything about it,” Okonji said.

Okonji described becoming a Running Start ambassador as her most memorable experience as a CID leader.

“It felt like a full circle moment,” Okonki said.

Lauren Waldron Long Island, N.Y.

President of Bridging the Gap

Lauren Waldron found herself immersed into CID world at St. Joe’s the second she arrived on campus.

Waldron joined Bridging the Gap, an organization which aims to bring all ethnicities at St. Joe’s into a more inclusive campus community. At first a general member, Waldron quickly made her way through the organization’s leadership ranks.

“I became co-publicist my sophomore year and loved it and continued to be on the executive board for the rest of my college career,” Waldron said.

One of Waldron’s most memorable experiences was as a panel volunteer for a CID Meet and Greet session for Running Start Program, an early arrival program.

“I enjoyed meeting so many new faces while also being able to share my experience as a CID leader, ” Waldron said.

Samira Toure

Columbia, Md.

Vice President of African Caribbean Student Association

As a person of Ivorian descent, Samira Toure was drawn to the African Caribbean Student Association (ACSA) when she began her first year at St. Joe’s.

Eventually serving as the vice president of ACSA, Toure’s goal as a CID leader was to educate people about diversity and celebrate different cultures on campus.

“I felt like we really needed that, especially in a very predominantly white institution,” Toure said.

Toure said she especially loved being a part of ACSA’s annual fashion show, the group’s signature event.

“We put a lot of work and effort into creating such a masterpiece, and I was so happy to see the results and how it turned out,” Toure said. “It was really fun to be around other models and other students of different cultures and different backgrounds and learn something new about them.”

DeNisa Sondai

Philadelphia

President of Bridging the Gap

DeNisa Sondai’s desire to leave a mark on campus led her to take on a leadership role as president of Bridging the Gap, a campus organization that promotes and celebrates diversity.

Last year, only Sondai and one other student were on the organization’s executive board. This year, Sondai worked hard to make the program more successful.

“Being able to turn the club around, we’ve had so many more events and just getting people engaged,” Sondai said.

One of Bridging the Gap’s most popular events is its biannual Taste of the World, which offers free tickets to an array of food trucks featuring different cuisines from around the world.

“We have so many different cultures here at St. Joe’s and [this event is about] honoring that and opening your perspective to just try other people’s food from their cultures”

Susan Mbombab

Philadelphia

President of African Caribbean Student Association

A staff member at St. Joe’s Center for Inclusion and Diversity motivated Susan Mbombab to take on a leadership role, and she eventually became president of the African Caribbean Student Association (ACSA).

“I wanted to be able to represent my identities and be able to give a safe space to other students by becoming a leader,” Mbombab said.

One of Mbombab’s favorite parts about being president of ACSA was watching students dance at the organization’s carnival.

“I’m able to bring a space where students are free to do that,” Mbombab said. “They’re just out to have fun and interact with African Caribbean culture in ways that go beyond food.”

Alexis Visco

Philadelphia

President of Black Student Union, University City

Alexis Visco has been an active member of the Black Student Union (BSU) at the University City campus since her first year, rising through the ranks to president her senior year.

“I just really like being there for students and creating events that students would enjoy and giving them spaces for things that they would like,” Visco said.

One of Visco’s favorite events was the annual BSU fashion show.

“At the fashion show this past year we had a bunch of flags from a bunch of different countries and everybody was just playing their songs, like African songs, and just dancing around and showing a lot of heritage and culture,” Visco said. “It made me feel very happy that there’s a space for people to feel comfortable to show pride for where they come from, or where their families have come from.”

POP CULTURE REWIND

“Us”

This chilling horror film directed by Jordan Peele had many people questioning the meaning of the movie. The movie left viewers’ hairs on the back of their necks standing up as they pondered the psychological meaning of the characters being haunted by a dark, twisted version of themselves. The film starred Hollywood big names such as Lupita Nyong’o and Elisabeth Moss.

“Emily in Paris”

Emily Cooper, played by Lily Collins, is an American working in Paris in this Netflix romantic comedy show. Fans followed along as Emily attempted to navigate French customs with her American perspectives inside and outside work. However, the show also garnered criticism for perpetuating stereotypes of French citizens.

“Tiger King”

“Euphoria”

Though Lil Nas X released this song in December 2018, it became a mega hit in 2019. After legendary country music artist Billy Ray Cyrus hopped on for the remix, both versions of the songs climbed up the charts of the Billboard Hot 100.

This HBO Original series quickly became a cultural phenomenon. Zendaya, who plays main character Rue, even garnered her first Primetime Emmy Award for her portrayal. The show’s unfiltered topics and scenes gained worldwide recognition, despite concerns that it romanticizes drug abuse.

Varsity Blues Scandal

One of the biggest college scams in history led to over 50 people being charged with conspiracy. Hollywood actors Lori Loughlin and Felicity Huffman were among the many who were indicted for cheating and bribing their children's admission to some of America’s top colleges. This scandal was so big that it led to the release of the Netflix documentary “Operation Varsity Blues: The College Admissions Scandal."

Lockdown

March marked the official start of mandatory lockdowns nationwide due to the spread of covid-19. Many people stayed indoors or followed new protocols for outside activities. All this free time meant a chance to bingewatch new shows and movies.

“Bridgerton”

This Netflix original historical drama was released on Dec. 25 and quickly became the most-watched English-language series on Netflix. Many fans worldwide could not stop talking about the steamy and passionate romance between Simon, played by Regé-Jean Page, and Daphne, played by Phoebe Dynevor.

This ominous documentary on Netflix had 64 million household viewers. People online discussed the bizarre inside look in the lives of Joe Exotic, Carole Baskin, and the tigers in their care. This alleged murder story had people on all platforms buzzing about it for weeks.

“Black is King”

Following up her 2019 album “The Lion King: The Gift,” the soundtrack of the 2019 live action film “The Lion King,” Beyoncé released a visual album on Disney+. The film showcases different scenes dedicated to Black American culture and various African cultures.

The Snyder Cut

Due to an unexpected family tragedy, Zack Snyder was never able to complete his vision of the 2017 “Justice League” film. But after about three years of campaigning by his fanbase, who used the hashtag #ReleaseTheSnyderCut, “Zack Snyder’s Justice League” was finally released on HBO Max. A four-hour epic, the “Snyder Cut” was critically acclaimed, much more than the 2017 version.

“Godzilla vs. Kong”

These two titans of cinema finally had their rematch, nearly 60 years after their first clash in “King Kong vs. Godzilla.” Despite having a dual release in theaters and on HBO Max, the fourth installment in the “MonsterVerse” grossed over $470 million worldwide on a $200 million budget. This success renewed the industry’s faith in the theatrical experience and a sequel is in development.

“The White Lotus”

Made under the shadow of lockdown restrictions, “The White Lotus” was an immediate sleeper hit that caught HBO off guard. A dark comedy following an assortment of entitled guests at a luxury hotel chain, what was once intended to be a cost-effective mini-series, expanded into an anthology focusing on different locations in the same chain.

“iCarly” Reboot

This popular Nickelodeon show from the early 2000s based on a group of teenage internet sensations made a comeback in June 2021 on Paramount+. The reboot follows the adult lives of some of the original cast members, including Miranda Cosgrove as Carly Shay. Many fans of the show who watched it when it first aired in the 2000s, as well as younger fans, were excited to watch the reboot, and it had 883 million viewing minutes.

“Squid Game”

Set in South Korea, this survival drama had viewers on the edge of their seats, following participants in life-or-death children’s games aiming to pay their debts. The characters’ storylines, violence, and many plot twists resulted in the show having over one billion hours of viewing time, making it Netflix’s most watched series.

“Avatar: The Way of Water”

While not as delayed a sequel as “Top Gun: Maverick,” “Avatar: The Way of Water” still comes 13 years after the original movie. Boasting one of the largest budgets in the industry, the film needed to become the fourth highest grossing release in history just to break even. The global box office gross cleared that bar with flying colors.

2022 2023

The Slap of the Century

The 94th Academy Awards saw actor Will Smith win his first Oscar, but that achievement would be forever overshadowed by a far more controversial moment. After comedian Chris Rock made a joke about Smith's wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, and her alopecia, Smith walked onstage and slapped Rock on live television.

“X” and “Pearl”

Continuing their streak of critically acclaimed “elevated horror,” independent studio A24 brought the first two installments of Ti West’s “X” trilogy to theaters. Both films star Mia Goth, who pulls double duty as final girl, Maxine, in “X” and then titular maniac in the prequel “Pearl.” A third installment, “MaXXXine,” is currently in development.

Multiversal Madness

With the release of “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” the multiverse became the next frontier in big screen storytelling. While “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” leaned into nostalgia with the return of past Marvel stars such as Hayley Atwell and Patrick Stewart, “Everything, Everywhere, All At Once” used the multiverse as a platform for a complex family drama.

“Top Gun: Maverick”

It may have taken 36 years, but this billion-dollar box office haul (the first of Tom Cruise’s career) proved it was worth the wait. The film brings back the titular Maverick to mentor a new generation of fighter pilots. The “Top Gun” sequel was a roaring success with audiences and critics.

Jackman is Back, Man

Kevin Feige declared that Phases 4-6 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe would be known as the “Multiverse Saga.” To that end, Hugh Jackman revealed that he will reprise his iconic role as the superhero Wolverine in 2024’s “Deadpool 3,” which co-stars long-time friend Ryan Reynolds as the Merc With a Mouth.

“M3GAN”

A concept almost tailor-made for the TikTok age, “M3GAN” put a cybernetic spin on the killer doll archetype. Grossing over $176 million on a $12 million budget, its winning blend of heartfelt drama and unapologetic camp, along with a fair share of scares, led Universal Pictures to greenlight a sequel within weeks of the film’s release.

“The Last of Us”

Adapted from the near universally-acclaimed video game of the same name, “The Last of Us” is the latest prestige HBO series to capture the cultural zeitgeist. Starring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey as Joel and Ellie, this botanical take on the zombie apocalypse told a compelling narrative about the necessity of love and persevering in a broken world.

Seniors of

I will always be grateful for the opportunity to lead such an amazing organization and meet some of the best people on Hawk Hill. The Hawk has helped me grow exponentially in my writing, reporting and editing skills and has challenged me to be a better version of myself. I am so thankful for our advisors that helped make issues happen, the writers that worked so hard on stories and the editors who made all the long nights worth it. I will miss The Hawk, and wish the best of luck to all our new staff!

I never thought, coming back to college as an adult, that I would find a place, a community to belong to. I found that in The Hawk. I owe a huge thank you to Dr. Bhayroo and Dr. Spinner, who gave me a home away from home and the opportunity to spread my wings and foster my interest in copyediting. My love for this work has only deepened in my two years working at The Hawk. I am forever grateful for my experience and will always think fondly of my time here.

Being a part of The Hawk has been an amazing experience. Joining this organization allowed me to branch out and meet new people, learn new skills and become more confident in myself as a person. Being a member of the Hawk granted me some of the most memorable moments of my college experience like spending many long Monday nights in the office and countless inside jokes between all of the editors. I am forever grateful that I stepped out of my comfort zone and tried something new, which in turn made me discover my love of storytelling.

As a first year, I remember being asked to design the front and back cover of the 2020 Commencement Issue and now I can’t believe I am writing about my four years of being on The Hawk staff in my own Commencement Issue. I have had so many laughs and made a lot of memories made with the great people on this staff throughout my time at St. Joe’s and I will be forever grateful for them! I will miss you all!

I am extremely grateful to be able to have the opportunity to work at The Hawk. Starting as a copy-editor in my third year, I have been given opportunities to write, edit, and meet amazing people who I would never have met without joining The Hawk. Monday night productions will always have a special place in my heart, since I was able to read all stories and laugh with some of the best people that I know. The Hawk will always be a special place for me and I wish the next generations of The Hawk the best of luck!

I’m so grateful for my roommate, Natalie. Thanks to her I found my place in the newsroom and grown so much from being here. Before Nat, I had never pictured myself at The Hawk Newsroom, and now it’s going to be one of the places I miss most on campus. The swivel chairs, slanted ceilings, and newspaper-covered walls just make the atmosphere in this building so different from anywhere else on campus. I’m so glad I was a part of this and I’m so thankful for the friends and experiences I made here my senior year wouldn’t have been the same without them.

May 2023 The Hawk Newspaper

The Hawk

Joining The Hawk turned out to be one of the most fulfilling experiences I’ve had during my time at St. Joes. It allowed me to develop an array of skills outside of my major, contribute to the St. Joes community, and meet new friends I would have never met. I’m also grateful that it provided me an opportunity to become more involved on campus, and that it kept me busy in a way that I enjoyed. Being a part of The Hawk was an unexpected endeavor that had a profound impact on my college experience.

My time at the Hawk not only gave me the transferable skills necessary to succeed in the professional world, but also allowed me to meet so many great people. I am grateful for my three years with the Hawk, as well as the opportunities it afforded me.

Caitlin Reistle Social Media Manager

The last year on Hawk Staff has been a such a fun and amazing experience. It is so special to see the hard work that goes on behind the scenes of each issue. Mixing my love for journalism and social media was so special, and I am excited to use the skills I have learned in my future career. I am thankful to have had the experience to work along side of such dedicated and genuine people!

Joining The Hawk was one of the best decisions of my college career. I’m so glad I got to know everyone and create Monday night memories in the newsroom with people I’ve come to call close friends. I will always cherish the laughs we shared, the late-night conversations and the opportunity to work alongside each and every one of you. Through my time working at the newspaper, I was able to enrich my love for writing and editing and I’m so grateful for the opportunity to have contributed to such an essential piece of St. Joe’s.

I am truly humbled that my time on The Hawk is ending. It has been a remarkable experience getting to write for features. Having the opportunity to tell the stories of so many unique and talented people will always be something I carry with me. I truly treasured each time someone reached out to me to thank me for telling their story, that will never get lost on me. I am especially grateful for the friendships I made during my time on The Hawk, I will hold onto those forever.

I started on the Hawk during my first semester at SJU. As a transfer student, I was still getting familiar with the campus and Dr. Bhayroo saw a gift of News reporting I didn’t know I had. I trained and learned teamwork and management skills throughout my time. During my first year, I had the honor of 2 stories published, 1 photo, and a collaboration piece. The Hawk has been a blessing to my individual growth and the connections I’ve made on Hawk Hill. I gained confidence in talking to people all over and that’s something I will never forget.

“One important lesson I’ve learned is that there’s always something that we can do to get rid of excess food. We don’t throw it away.”
“Time management is something that I learned from being a part of it, balancing a lot of things like schoolwork and extracurriculars.”

“I think the most important lesson that I learned from there is community because it’s nice to bounce ideas off of other people in that organization, especially the students I taught this last semester.”

“The power of vulnerability, seeing people take pride in workshopping and publishing their creative and deeply personal work has shown me how much we can all grow from leaning on one another and pushing ourselves to do the same. Also, it’s taught me the liberty to be found in expression, and how raising the voices of everyone - on both campuses - is something we should all work towards and be proud of.”

“HHP allowed me to get to know people in this school I otherwise would have never met and helped me feel connected. I became a part of a second family, which allowed me to help bring fun and excitement to campus every week.”

“I was able to grow out of my comfort zone while improving my skills on public speaking and flexibility while taking on roles and tasks on tours or in the office.”

“It’s a program that prepares you for graduating. It prepares you for the real life.”

“I definitely learned how to be a better people person, a much better public speaker and just interacting with people that I had never met before. I gained a lot of professional skills through [Phi Sigma Pi] as well, skills for future job interviews and whatnot.”

“One thing that I learned through that was basically all the skills for professional life can really be integrated into your overall life skills in general.”

“I learned how to be a leader. And I don’t just mean running for a leadership position. Leadership means realizing you’re capable of being a good leader for the organization and that you are confident you can be successful in the position. It means working to become a better leader and working to inspire others to want to also be a leader”

“Being a food marketing major, we are not in the food business serving people but the people business serving food. One great lesson I learned is to continually network with others and keep those connections close.”

“I was able to learn a lot about the medical profession and its demands while contributing to the e-board as secretary of the organization.”

DAY JOBS, NIGHT JOBS AND ALL THE IN BETWEEN JOBS

Marie Altmann

Job Title: Standardized Patient Actor at St. Joe’s

“We’re given a script about our health background or age or name, and they basically have to act like we are in an actual doctor’s office with that actual illness. They have to treat us like we’re an actual patient. It’s a lot of fun. It pays really well, and it’s fun for me being in theater at St. Joe’s because it’s something new I’ve never gotten to do before”

Kayla Sweeney

Christopher Maffuid

Job Title: Owner and Operator of Quality Affordable Landscaping

“Knowing that I have people looking up to me and being held to this higher standard on job sites, whether that be the clients or employees, I really feel like I’m a leader and a mentor. There’s always something to prove. You always want to deliver to the client. That process of working alongside my employees and then seeing the client’s satisfaction at the end of the day after we do the job well done, that never gets old.”

Job Title: Home Help Aid for people with autism

“I work with either pediatric patients with autism or I work with mainly adults with autism. What I do is just really taking care of them, making sure that they have their medications or making sure that they have everything that they need... I love connecting with my clients or patients because I love being able to help them live their daily life and be successful.”

Nick Jones

Job Title: CEO, Trovail Worldwide clothing brand

“It makes me so much happier as a person that I can get stuff done like this, and honestly, it keeps me really competitive and driven. Also, it’s really relieving because the brand can be eternal. I never need to end it for anything because I’m doing it for my own self.”

Stephanie Hiltpold

Job Title: Data Analyst Intern for the SJU Athletics Department

“I managed and visually displayed the budgets for each respective athletic team. I also monitored all the athletic teams travel schedules and states they competed in, and I was updating the mens and womens operation spreadsheets for basketball...As an athlete, I wanted to be able to use data analytics in sports, and I apply what I was learning in the classroom to sports.”

Olivia Wojtowicz

Job Title: Counselor at Child Mind Institute

“It’s so fulfilling because these kids you work with, they come in the first day, they don’t look at you, they don’t talk to you. They will just sit in one corner and want to leave so badly. And then you see that through the work that you’ve done, by the end of the week, they’re able to look at an adult and ask for something. It’s so fulfilling that you actively are helping these kids live better lives.”

Niyada Birch

Jacki Harding

Job Title: Bartender at The Merion Cricket Club

“I make drinks for all of the restaurants at the Cricket Club, and all the drinks for the entire club . . . Working with the members and meeting all the different people, you get to talk to a lot of them since they sit at the bar all the time.”

Job Title: Childcare Center Teacher at JITB JR Arrows at the Gate

“Working at Arrows, I helped students get through online schooling and challenges within their family as well as discovering their likes and dislikes. My job is to support students through life experiences while adapting to the educational environment.”
