This space provides an informal events space as well as connection between a new theatre street entrance, café & workshop space and the refurbished theatre foyers. The auditorium is completely redesigned within the retained historic circus shell, increasing capacity by over 100 seats in a variety of formats using a combination of repositionable seats and retractable rostra & bleachers, as well as a fully demountable and adjustable proscenium. The material aesthetic is durable and expressive of each material’s natural characteristics, including reclaimed cotton from denim clothing reprocessed as acoustic felt, refurbished ‘as found’ concrete floor surfaces, Swedish pine plywood joinery, visible fir timber floor joists, recycled rubber sheet flooring and restored brickwork. These will age gracefully, assembled to express their connections with raw welds, bolts, joints, pipes and cabling becoming a visible barcode to the craft of theatre making.
