collision zone

sticky campus

flipped learning

“Collision zones” are a collaborative touch down spot that is built for faculty, students, and entrepreneurs to work together. These spaces can typically be found in in-between spots, work cafes, or other mobile spaces.

“Sticky campus” is a campus that has every amenity a student might need, which provides plenty of reasons to visit and none to leave. Google’s campuses follow this same practice.

“Flipped learning” is a classroom with completely mobile furniture that can be re-conigured in minutes. The beneits of lipped learning for students include adapting to different learning modes and control over postural choices.

Pros of Collaborative Learning Soft skills are one of the many beneits of collaborative learning because they force students to work out of their comfort zone. The soft skills developed from collaborative learning are communication, teamwork, time management, and public speaking. Employers are looking for employees that can not only discuss their working ideas for solutions, but who can also transform those ideas into physical reality. Collaborative learning prepares students for this environment by providing gallery spaces and different types of media to illustrate on such as TV monitors, pin up spaces, and mobile white boards.

10

Technology is another beneit of collaborative learning because it forces students to use and learn the newest technology in the ield.

the client Located in St. Louis, Missouri is Hotel Louis, a boutique hotel insipired by the old-world architecture and unqiue lifestyle of New Orleans, Louisiana. St. Louis and New Orleans are both cities with an incredible soul. From jazz music to French inluences, these cities stand true to who they are and inspire a connection to both the past and the present.

goals To develop a four star boutique hotel that is inlunced by the culture and lifestyle of its metropolitan environment. To design the space and its components with restrictions and guidelines in terms of design aesthetics and hotel brand speciications.

26

Project Type: Team of 4

Software: Revit, Illustrator, and Photoshop

CONCEPT French Quarter Filled with streamboat cruises and bohemian charm. The old-world architecture and century-old restaurants inspired the design of Hotel Louis.

Frenchman Street

Most musical location in all of New Orleans. This vibrant, buzzing street inspired the concept for the restaurant, bar, and grill, Soprillo.

Garden District Gleaming white homes framed by canopies of leafy green trees. The opulent, southern elegance inlunced the design of the spa, Uptown Sugar.

Bourbon Street Always the life of the party in New Orleans. The neon lights and colored beads heavily inlunced the design intent of the rooftop bar, The Raucous.

New Orleans, Louisiana

St. Louis, Missouri

Hotel Louis takes the inluences of New Orleans and immerses them into the city of St. Louis creating an exciting travel destination. Each facet of the hotel is intended to represent a different part of New Orleans, including the French Quarter, Frenchman Street, the Garden District, and Bourbon Street. QUIET ROOM Design intent came from the classic elegance of the Garden District. Ironwork canopy hangs from the ceiling draped in greenery adding a natural sense of calm to the space and replicating the serenity of the garden. Water feature found within the quiet room acts as a focal point and a relaxation component. There is a glass covering over the water that is lush with the loor to provide a safe walking surface.

34

TREATMENT ROOM Whitewashed brick and off-white walls are inspired by the extravagant homes found in the Garden District. Greenery is implemented into the spa to reduce stress and clean indoor air by absorbing toxins. Privacy and noise level reduction is also a beneit of plant life. HOSPITALITY

Dermatologist created

about the project Location: Stockholm, Sweden to New York, New York Space: 2 levels, 40,000 s.f. Type: Corporate Training Center

the client Hi Jen is a luxury skin care company from Stockholm, Sweden. The company is built on the belief that people should not conform to the world’s beauty standards; instead, unconventional and natural beauty should be celebrated.

goals To create a lagship training center that will be used to train employees from all over the country. To develop a design that relects the corporation’s high energy workforce and impress visitors through its innovative use of architectural design elements. To build a corporate image while only using Steelcase and other associated vendors as the only sources for FF&E.

46

Project Type: Individual

Software: Revit, Illustrator, and Photoshop

CONCEPT

Hi Jen seeks to provide a product that seamlessly promotes minimalism through harmless, clean chemicals while visually encouraging diversity with a wide variety of skin tone foundations. They provide services from consultations to sales to empowerment seminars.

Concept Development, Programming, Space Planning, Revit Model Building, Lighting, Material and Finish Selections, and Renderings

47

RESEARCH human centered design support

Support is accomplished by working in a relaxed, fully supported position, which relieves stress, minimizes injury risks, and helps maximize performance. Ergonomic task chairs will be implemented throughout the space to relax the body.

neutral reach zone

The neutral reach zone relates to having work tools and materials within reach. The neutral reach zone maintains a healthy, supported posture. For instance, an adjustable keyboard should be located only 1 or 2 inches above the lap, and a mouse should be shaped to it the hand.

indoor air quality

Indoor air is ive times more polluted than outdoor air. Dust, allergens, and gases pollute indoor air, and cleaning products, upholstery, and carpeting harbor germs that are carried through the building via recycled air. These pollutants contribute to the health of a building’s occupants, who may experience headaches and fatigue.

proper lighting

A proper lighting source for looking at both the monitor and paperwork should be provided. Indirect, general lighting as well as task lighting at each workstation to provide adequate light that eliminates glare and eyestrain must be speciied.

company’s goals diversity

The space is diverse to accommodate the various employees tasks. The space also relects the diverse backgrounds and cultures of the occupants, which will promote individuality and sense of ownership.

empowerment

The space empowers its occupants by supporting mental and physical health. The users will spend most of their day at work, so the space must not only provide comfort, but also good air quality, acoustics, daylight, and encourage movement.

minimalism

The space is minimalistic in order to enhance the given space and the people who occupy it. Minimalistic design will not over-stimulate the employees, thus providing visual comfort.

Preliminary Sketches

CONCEPT Fleeting Beauty was inspired by the cylinder shape of a cosmetic case. From a tube of lipstick to a glass Q-tip holder, the geometric shape has transcended through the decades for cosmetic packaging. Because brushes are very visible in the make up application process, the legs are attached on the exterior of the chair.
