Introduction Welcome to the world of ICT. Flexibility of content and relevance to your subject areas enables both experienced and inexperienced to benefit from the programme. This paper is one of three in the Professional Studies strand of the Graduate Diploma. These papers interweave through your chosen curriculum papers and those of the Education Studies strand. We look for direct application of these when you are on Teaching Practice. Short Course Description This course examines the rationale and strategies for the integration of information and communication technologies (ICTs) into the teaching and learning environment, while providing opportunities for students to extend their confidence and competence in using these technologies. Aim To develop use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) for teaching and learning purposes and for organisational aspects of classroom practice. Learning Outcomes Students will demonstrate in the production of personal resources: a
Critical appraisal of ways in which information and communication technologies can enhance learning and teaching.
b
Competency in the use of computer applications such as word processors, databases, spreadsheets, drawing and publishing packages.
c
Design skills and knowledge of conventions as appropriate for specific contexts.
d
Informed and critical use of Internet and Intranet.
e
Appropriate use of Information and Communication technologies for organisational aspects of classroom practice.

Course Requirements It is compulsory to complete and pass all course assignments to pass this paper. Willing and active participation is expected in all course sessions. Computer Applications Competency Students who do not pass the Computer Applications competency assessment in the ITLE programme will be required to attend classes in identified areas and to reach competency in those areas before commencing Practicum One. Total Course Hours 35 hours Course Points 3.5 points Restriction/s Students who have completed ICT01P – Information and Communication Technology are not eligible to enrol in this course.

Teaching Method Discussion, workshops, speakers and demonstrations Some weeks in this course students will be given tasks to complete for the next session, it is expected that these will be done.
Course Assessment Assessment Tasks A pass in this course will require the satisfactory completion of each of the assessment tasks. Formative assessment must be an integral part of the teaching programme and must involve constructive feedback. • Demonstrate basic competency in a range of technologies relevant to their teaching practice. (Learning Outcomes a-e) • Produce resources to support their professional practice that demonstrate an understanding of the effective use of ICTs in teaching and learning contexts.(Learning Outcomes a-e) Assessment for this course is awarded on a pass/fail basis. Assignments Assignment 1 Competency Assignment You will produce evidence of basic competency and the ability to apply simple design principles using a range of applications and information and communication technologies. This will be demonstrated through work done prior to course entry and it will be formatively assessed during the course. Further assessment will relate to in class tasks and resource production in the second teaching block. Assessment Criteria Pass
Able to use a range of applications independently and effectively. The range includes word processing, spreadsheet and presentation software plus internet and email. Able to organise and manage files appropriately. Able to use an aspect of multimedia effectively for teaching and learning purposes
Assessed through: • Observations during teaching blocks. Gaps will be clearly identified and student progress monitored. • Formative assessment during course.

Resource Plan Due: Friday 27th July 5.00 pm Finished Resources Due: Week 43 – week of October 15th. Assignments handed over after class presentations. Students can hand in prior to this date.
Detailed Requirements for the Assignment You are required to produce two resources to support your professional practice. These resources will demonstrate an understanding of the effective use of ICTs in teaching and learning contexts. Resource Plan – fill in form (attached in course book) with brief description of subject area, content, ICT programme/s you will use, any areas you require support in and a timeline. 1 Teaching Resource - to be produced for your own use in one of your subject areas. The resource should: a. Demonstrate your capability to produce material of an appropriate standard and relevance for use in a school. b. It will be accompanied by a rationale (or unit plan) that explains how and why you would use it. Possibilities could include: PowerPoint, interactive board resource, webpage, web quest, video, selected Digital Learning Objects (DLO’s) with follow-up tasks 2
Student Resource – To be produced, or explained in relation to active student engagement with using ICTs in a creative and purposeful way by your students in their subject area. This resource should: a. Enhance student’s knowledge and/or skill development in the chosen subject area. b. Promote the use of ICT as a tool to enhance learning in a meaningful way. c. It will be accompanied by a rationale (or unit plan) that explains how and why students will use it. (This must be an original resource not copied from a template e.g. millionaire game) Possibilities could include: PowerPoint, interactive board resource, webpage, web quest, video, selected DLO’s with follow-up tasks In your Curriculum and Learning through Language (LTL) courses you are required to produce resource/s as part of an assignment. You may wish to use these 2 resources for this and will need to make sure that you are also meeting the specific criteria for those assignments too. Suggested Format This will vary depending on what ICT tool and type of resource you choose to create. If you have any questions or would like some suggestions please talk with Andrea.

Assessment Criteria Pass The resource(s) produced Comprises of two resources - One for teacher use and one involving active student use of ICTs • For students in one of your subject areas. • Clearly demonstrate understanding of how student learning can be supported by the use of ICTs. • Follow relevant design guidelines and are accurate. • Fit the stated purpose ie class level, subject, learning intentions.

Pre-submission of Assignments I will be willing to give feedback on whether your assignment meets the pass criteria, up to one week before the due date. Resubmissions Assignments cannot be revised and resubmitted for remarking. Students may appeal an assessment result – refer to the Senate Policy on Assessment of Student Performance: Principles and Guidelines (see Academic Policies, below). Extensions Students must apply in writing to the Head of Course before the due date for an extension of time (no longer than one week) to submit an assignment. Where an extension is granted assignments will be considered for a pass. Late Submissions No assignment will be accepted for marking after one week of the due date without an extension being granted prior to the due date. In exceptional circumstances (cases of illness, accident, family bereavement or on the recommendation of the Intake Supervisor) the Programme Director may permit a late assignment to be considered for a full pass. Plagiarism/Dishonest Practice You should make sure that all submitted work is your own. Care should be taken to correctly cite the work of others and the teaching team are happy to provide guidance on this, or you can consult materials provided by the Student Learning Centre (see http://slc.otago.ac.nz/studyskills). Plagiarism is defined as copying or paraphrasing another's work, whether intentionally or otherwise, and
