Project Overview Tourism in Singapore is a large contributor to the economy, 17.4 million international tourists come to visit the city per year. These tourists more than triple the current population density of the country. With this clear demographic outlining itself within the city limits, there lies a need to address this unique user group with the addition of a boutique hotel - one which sets itself apart from existing tourist housing accommodations. There is importance in a new genre of hotel that can’t be pigeon-holed into a specific classification, a hotel should have a sense of time and place. Through extensive research of the Singapore culture, leisure hotel market demographics, and boutique hotel case studies - the Orchis hotel is a 7 story boutique luxury lifestyle hotel to suit the Singapore leisure market in a brand new way.
Challenges & Opportunities The floorplans for the Orchis Hotel were given to our Studio V course by HKS, an architecture firm in Orlando, as they are existing plans for a facility that their architects are currently working on. This posed a challenge to the project in that plans of this depth and size were larger than any other Florida State studio project, although it also proposed a unique opportunity to gain industry experience within a classroom setting. This capstone project was also an international project, the first of it’s kind, so working within the metric system for all dimensions posed to be a challenging yet rewarding experience. In addition to the constraints given by professors, this project was also completed during a nationwide shutdown due to the pandemic - allowing an opportunity to complete renderings in softwares I was not accustomed to due to University softwares not being available to students.

S i t e S ect i o n s L ateral Section Orchis Hotel lies on a sloped site that envelopes the north end of levels one and two, slowly curving back to the rear of the building to expose the loading dock and Riverside dining and retail experiences. Employee corridors and offices lie in the underground portion of the building to emphasize natural light in the guest areas.
Longitudinal Section The main building entry for guests to enter from the valet parking area lies on the third floor where guests can easily attend a lunch or dinner at the lobby restaurant. The third floor has the main lobby activities and leads guests either to their upstairs rooms or downstairs Riverside experience.

Orchis Grand Entry As guests enter the space, they are greeted with a grand archway that draws them towards the front desk within the reception area. The Orchis logo is inlayed into the glazed sandstone porcelain floor. Biophilic elements are evident within the reception area as well as many brass accented organic features. A blend of textures and cultures are celebrated throughout the grand entry and reception spaces to bring a luxurious feel to guests as they check-in.

D h ya n a S pa & Fi t n e s s Center Guests are encouraged to relax to the fullest extent and the Dhyana Spa makes it an achievable task through all-inclusive spa treatments, massages, and facials. The Spa houses a window-lined fitness center, studio stretch room, yoga studio, nail salon, sauna, and even a juice and tea bar. Two entrances to the spa are included to allow guests just choosing to use the fitness and locker rooms to enter without disturbing guests waiting for spa treatment. Key Plan

Standard Suite options come in both double-double and King arrangements for varying guest parties, and Deluxe Suites are all offered in King options. Deluxe Suites feature a kitchenette, full-service bar cart, lounge area, and desk for completing tasks.

Mewah Market The lower level of Orchis Hotel is reserved for guests wishing to enter from the Singapore River Riverwalk, as there is a lower level reception for those guests to check-in. This lower level is also catered towards visitors who are just visiting the hotel for the day and wish to partake in a dining or shopping experience at the Mewah Market. The Market features 3 restaurants that have grab-and-go style options on one wing of the building, and the other wing is a rentable vendor market for local artisans to sell and share goods with locals and tourists alike.

Project Overview As the FSU Primary Care Clinic expands to a larger facility, the core values of the practice remain intact - to achieve optimal health outcomes utilizing available community and medical resources. The design for the expanded building reflected a concept of growth and renewal to serve patients and encourage growth among staff of new and aspiring health professionals through the mitigation of privacy concerns in exam room layouts, incorporation of large staff collaborative areas, and a soothing color palette and comfortable furniture pieces. The new clinic spotlights possibilities at the intersection of space, wellness, and community by incorporating elements which create a productive staff and an environment in which patients trust their healthcare providers and engage in their own wellness.
Challenges & Opportunities The FSU Primary Health Clinic is unique in that it is a teaching facility where exam rooms are 20% larger than a traditional facility, and it uses an integrated-care approach to medicine. The clinic runs using an enhanced medical assistant scribe model, as well as accommodates a broader scope of services including procedures, x-rays, and counseling sessions for the broad community surrounding the area. This challenged the space planning process to accommodate these larger exam rooms and collaborative teaching spaces in the existing building shell. Overall, this project was an opportunity to assess operational flow of an existing healthcare clinic and expand on that footprint to create a new environment which encourages growth and renewal.

Design Development Exam rooms are conveniently located central to each wing to allow for circulation f rom both the waiting area as well as side entrances, and staff and patient corridors are separated by these exam rooms to encourage efficiency among physicians. S o u n d M i t i g at i o n D i a g r a m The physical and psychological effects of sound on patients, caregivers, and physicians call for measures and systems in place that move beyond HIPPA constraints in healing environments such as this ambulatory care facility. Noise has been directly linked to patient stress levels, staff concentration disruptions, and overall disorientation as it is the number one environmental stressor in a healthcare environment.
Acoustic sound baffles and pink noise systems will be placed in collaborative employee areas to reduce speech intelligibility in adjacent patient rooms and act as a sound barrier amongst staff
Exam room walls will be constructed with a high STC value and will penetrate the ceiling to improve sound attenuation
Sound masking in patient rooms will reduce distracting noises to keep patients calm as well as act as a noise barrier to keep HIPPA privacy constraints in place

A Natural Aesthetic
Patients enter the space directly off of the parking lot for smooth transition and ease of accessibility. A central front desk greets patients upon initial entry and provides a semi-private consultation space around the corner for community members seeking payment consultation or electronic tutorials. A variety of seating options meet patient needs, such as wide benches to accommodate bariatric patients with dignity, arm options to support older patients, and a large desk area to promote dialogue.
Life-long Community Connection Recognition is given to donors of the new FSU Primary Care Clinic through a display in the community room. Large laminate panels display the names of donors in a feature wall for users of the community space to enjoy. Overall, this donor wall celebrates life-long community ambassadors and the tie between health and community well-being.
Lab & Blood Draw Stations A central lab and blood draw area is open and inviting to both patients and staff, encouraging both parties to take in natural light and have access to biophilic elements. The reception desk sits in front of the enclosed lab processing area so staff can communicate via the transaction counter about results.
E xa m R o o m E f f i c i e n c y & Way f i n d i n g Exam room exteriors feature clerestory windows to bring in natural light from the exterior without compromising patient privacy as well as sliding door systems with soft-close dampening which reduces noise from closing behind & an acoustic mitigation system seals all four sides to maintain privacy standards. ADA signage is hung 55� AFF and is installed on the latch side of the door. Exam room interiors feature self-weighing exam tables as well as key diagnostic equipment - wall-hung for physician use. Ample storage is supplied and physician, caregiver, and patient zones are clearly defined within the space.

Promoting Collaboration in a Work Island Two central staff work islands are placed on each wing to cut down on physician steps to the exam rooms. A staff only corridor runs off of each of these work islands and divides the exam rooms to employ a physician onstage/off-stage concept to enhance the care experience to patients and organizing staff pathways to improve operational effectiveness, thereby reducing patient wait times.

Project Overview
Tallahassee Statistics
The Tallahassee community is a vibrant atmosphere with a wide variety of residents, many of whom are either beginning families or currently have children. With a growing youth population, the resources available to them need to broaden to meet their growing needs. Current community centers in the area are limited as far as the resources and recreational activities that they offer for the youth. Currently, the Tallahassee community lacks indoor recreation that accommodates both children, young teenagers and their caregivers. The community also falls short of providing after school care and learning centers where children have the opportunity to cultivate their learning beyond traditional methods. This highlighted the need for a recreational and educational enrichment center in the city of Tallahassee to support the needs of all residents in the area.

Challenges & Opportunities This project was an adaptive reuse of an existing Toys R Us building in the area which was abandoned due to company bankruptcy. Constraints were placed to keep 80% of the existing structure intact which posed a challenge in the space planning process. Code studies were applied to refit the former business space into a recreational and assembly space to support the community and apply principles of adaptive reuse. This project was an experience to learn to apply former building constraints and apply research on the community at large to create a facility to help the community and all of it’s constituents.

Inspired by Abstract Regionalism, the design will both integrate and celebrate the local Tallahassee community while introducing modern and minimalist design to inspire wellness in a new way. Providing a solution to the lack of modern recreational and educational wellness facilities in Tallahassee, Abstract Regionalism addresses the needs of the local community while abstracting traditional architectural design, to create a space that welcomes youth and their caregivers to grow, move and be inspired to better their personal and community health. Abstracting traditional linear design into curved and playful forms, provokes imagination and creativity in youth while giving the community a refreshing and modern design to spark change. Tallahassee is a historic city with a need for a fresh space to connect the community and promote modern health and wellness.

Reception & Entry The Reception will be staffed to provide safety and assistance to guests. Here, guests will check in for classes and events, and receive guidance on where to go in the large space. There is minimal seating to provide comfort if needed while encouraging people to explore the space further.
Studio & Spin Room Elevate is home to three studio rooms, as well as one designated spin bike room. These multi-purpose studio spaces are used for group exercise classes, private events, and supplemental classroom breakout spaces. The exibility of the studios allows for functional movement to be catered to any needs and promote ďŹ tness at all ages.
Reception & Entry Guests are welcomed in and invited to engage in the recreation and learning opportunities inside. Through the archway, guests enter into the teaching kitchen and cafe as well as lounge area. Here, healthy habits in cooking and eating are taught and practiced with the option to order grab and go snacks and drinks. A large lounge area provides a multi-purpose space for guests to relax, socialize and work. Visually, the two volume space creates an airy and clean feel with visual interest of the overhanging track and central gymnasium. Setting the tone for an inclusive community space, the reception and entry spaces are open to allow for guests to interact freely and not be separated by boundaries.
Gymnasium & Track As a recreation center, Elevate provides spaces for people to better their physical and emotional health. Spaces include, a full sized basketball court, workout gym and three lane track. Through the inclusion of these spaces, people of all ages are given to opportunity to be active. All materials are highly durable and cleanable with resilient flooring to support both equipment and users. Unisex restrooms are included on the second story for ease of access, as well as accessibility to towels and water. While caregivers and guardians are waiting for their child’s class or activity to finish, they are able to better their personal fitness while still having viewing access to their child. These spaces create an open community environment and curates intergenerational interaction through the visual openness of these spaces.
Cl a s s r o o m & E d u cat i o n S pac e s Classrooms provide learning spaces for children of all ages to supplement traditional classroom learning. Technology is integrated into each space allowing for endless opportunities. In addition, art supplies, games, books and toys are supplied to enhance learning. Each classroom is staffed allowing for guidance and support while challenging kids to grow and create.
Track & Physical Fitness Center The rock wall and children’s exploration play area are accessible for children of all ages and employ large shapes to allow the children to create their own adventure rather than pushing them to play according to constraints. Seating areas and an overhanging stretch and track area are open to allow parents and guardians to view their children as they play and interact with others. Parents are encouraged to pursue their own fitness goals which is why they are provided with recreation areas specific to them, with clear sightlines to play spaces.

Project Overview
Concept: Breaking Barriers
The Tough Mudder organization is one which prides itself on teamwork and testing mental and physical boundaries. Starting out as a company who designs traditional 8-10 mile courses, the organization has since grown into a corporation with a variety of obstacle courses and the new addition of fitness boot camps. The office was designed to suit client’s, their staff, and prospective visitors, by serving as a work space where everyone can complete work and potential clients can communicate in a comfortable area. Tough Mudder HQ is located in Chattanooga, TN - a growing center of art and business professionals.
Tough Mudder Headquarters has a company culture that not only encourages teamwork – it enforces it. A concept of breaking barriers will echo the duality of nature and the built environment, the single and collective workspace, and the basic human construct of adversity. Organic forms and clear sight-lines will seamlessly work together to create an intuitive and collective workspace. Intersecting spaces as well as protruding forms create clear spaces which will overall convey the concept of breaking barriers.
Challenges & Opportunities The modern workplace prioritizes employee needs, which is echoed throughout this project. Spanning across two vertical stories, the project posed challenges regarding space planning to join all departments together. Overall, this project opened my eyes to the importance of the user experience and how it impacts the modes of work.

F lo o r P l a n s Design Development: Floor Plan Levels 2 & 3 The floor plan for the Tough Mudder Headquarters is flexible for all modes of work and prioritizes the workers by providing them with comfortable enclaves, workspaces, a cafe, and relaxation coffee stops. The Tough Mudder Organization consisted of 5 major departments which were separated according to relevance to each other and a large employee work cafe was added to accommodate the remote workers of the company. 2

Front Entry & Work Cafe The work cafe is a flexible space for both visitors of the Tough Mudder office and employees to relax or quietly get work done. Located right off of the reception area before the staircase - the work cafe is centrally located so workers can grab a quick snack or meet with a visiting client. Earthy materials and organic forms are reminiscent of the outdoors - a key aspect of the Tough Mudder company.

A central shave station allows products to be tested or a custom shave to be provided. Products are displayed in a variety of options including wall shelving as well as floor based shelving and dispensary stations.
Merchandise & Cosmetic Vending Two dispensary stations are placed in the front of the Endeavor aisle - customers can place a pick-up order online prior to coming to the store or can scroll through products on the screen to choose exactly what product works for them without browsing the aisle. Branding elements are displayed through both pictures reflecting company values as well as a dropped ceiling branding element.

Description This fixture was a proposed solution for a collaboration between Golden Lighting Corporation and Florida State University Interior Architecture and Design Department in which a residential dining table pendant fixture was created. Selected Fixture: Billow Pendant This luminaire is inspired by the quiet simplicity of clouds and the atmosphere - seemingly floating above to create a simplistic yet elegant mood. The central form of the fixture is a sphere which blends seamlessly with surrounding spheres in a horizontal fashion. A linear LED light strip hangs in the center of the four spheres, diffusing light both upwards and downwards to create a glowing effect. Blown glass diffuses light in an even distribution and stainless steel extends from two central cords to hold the fixture in place.
