FEASIBILITY REPORT

MODULE DESCRIPTION An individual negotiated enquiry and research based module. The module enabled me to develop specific knowlege, understanding, arguments, evidence and critical anlysis of primary and secondary sources which inform and support the individual chosen Major design project. It required me to identify a building and suitable purpose for it. Through the report I have investigated and analysed the building, site context, new purpose, precedent material, case studies, conceptual inspirations and technical material to aid the creative design work. The report stood at around 23,000 words and was graphically considered throughout as I continued to develop the design alongside it.

FINAL MAJOR PROJECT LEVEL 6

Birmingham City

Jewellery Quarter, Birmingham

Building Name: Standard Works Location: , 45 VITTORIA STREET Vittoria Street and Regents Place, Jewellery Quarter Birmingham, B1 3ND Date of Construction : 1879 Architect: Thomas F. Williams Listing : Grade 2 Listed Date of listing : 08-Jul-1982

CONTEXT The building for the proposed design is situated in the heart of the Jewellery Quarter, located in the north west of Birmingham City Centre. The Jewellery Quarter is famous for being home to Jewellery Manufacturing since the 18th Century and still stands today for being one of the last remaining areas in the world for mass production within close proximity for 200 years. The site sits on the corner of Regents Place and Vittoria Street which is also home to Europes largest Jewellery School which has an exceptional reputation and is highly valued by the local area. The Birmingham School of Jewellery have formed extremely close connections with the surrounding Business’s in all aspects of the trade, helping students step into the field with a high skill set of knowlege and enables them to gain experience within the proffesional world. Birmingham City Centre is currently under a re-development scheme called the Big City Plan which aims to form an enterprising, innovative and green city which will strengthen its position within the international stage. The Jewellery Quarter is an important part of Birmingham’s Heritage as a centre of excellence in the manufacture and trade of Jewellery. Studio 47 will become a part of this development process whilst restoring the historical heritage of the trade in which the area is famous for.

Hayley-Grace Card IAD Portfolio

BRIEF Studio 47 explores the transition from the traditional form of Jewellery to the Introduction of the potential within the contemporary world, reflected through the restoration and adaption of the building itself. Inspired by the Journey of the Diamond., Studio 47 will take one on an exploration process providing an entertaining, interactive and educational experience to remind society that although the importance of tradition within the production line will remain highlighted, one must be accepting of the new and unfamiliar. The concept of embedment and adornment provides for the scarring of the building to be restored and clearly portrayed through the suggestion of the adornment of the body and how this is achieved in the contemporary world. The proposal for which is currently known Standard Works will aim to provide an expansion for the Birmingham School of Jewellery’s Facilities to equip them with a site they are able to visit for the enhancement of inspiration and stimulation. Studio 47 will restore the site and be manipulated to form a contemporary space for public, students and curators to be educated and inspired through the exhibits encased in the building whilst respecting the heritage on the same level as technological strategies.

CONCEPTUAL APROACH

The concept for the Contemporary Jewellery Exhibition has been driven by casting the negatives of human body parts. The main concept which has driven the scheme is the contrast between embedment and adornment. Jewellery is known to be adorned to areas of the body however embedment is not so common. The first sign of this was when Burmese Rubies were embedded under the skin of warriors in battle for protection. Embedment is now becoming a popular form of Jewellery design; An example of this is Naomi Kizhner’s ‘Energy Addicts’ Collection. The concept has evolved into creating structures which ‘push the boundary’ in terms of its architectural structure; this structure will be embedded with materials to create sensory spaces and to form arrangements for display. The negatives from the castings provide enclosures where the items on display can be ‘embedded’ for visitors to discover. The Journey of Jewellery is particularly important as it is passed through many hands in manufacture and ownership and therefore the journey around the exhibition will be tailored with that in mind. It will aim to stimulate all ages as it will encourage visitors to find the embedded ‘hidden gems’.

SITE RESPONSE The Jewellery Quarter is sectioned by 7 areas which are defined by their nature of use and are distinguished by their subtle differences in characteristics. The Site response below focused mainly on how the 7 areas competed for business and also love from the community. It also showed how certain areas were blocked by one another from the city centre in terms of access. The piece was moveable to show the freedom and restrictions of each zone as well as looking at the kinetic energy of the body. 7 sections of the Quarter South West Industrial Fringe The Cemetries The Golden TriangLe

DEVELOPMENT WORK

DEVELOPMENT WORK

This visual is driven by the development of the concept of positive and negative. The newer area of the building is at the rear of the elevations basement and ground floor, this is the area which is most suited to the exhibition area. This proposal shows that the space will be divided by the floor plate seperating the two floors. The ground floor will act as the positive space and the basement as the negative. The idea for the exhibition is that the Jewellery exhibits will be protected via glass screens which have been formed in cube like shapes which pierce through the floor plate. THE ENTRANCE The materiality of the pavement naturally guides one through the threshold, as they receive a gentle transition from outside to in, signifying no distinct boundary between the two. The visitor is transported into a world of visual music: fragments of sparkling light bouncing off the suspended installation above which holds beautiful materials of the world. Each with their own special story of a journey to life, they highlight the staircase and lift as key features to the magical space. The double height foyer introduces the visitor to a sense of history as it displays it’s scars of how it once stood.

Hayley-Grace Card IAD Portfolio

THE VAULT The visitor owns the independent choice of which direction to take, one may be enticed by the piercing beams of light bursting through metal sheets creating a suggestion of security laser beams in which the visitor would dare to break. The sense of this acting as a combination to enter this space. This introduces the visitor to interact with the contemporary world.

THE MAIN EXHIBITION

Hayley-Grace Card IAD Portfolio

THE BRILLIANCE ROOM The cut of the diamond is the most important aspect of the process. This space captures the reflection and refraction of light resembling the way in which wearable technology is beginning to capture the imagination of many designers and ultimately the future of the world. The brilliance room marks the end of the journey revealing the newest collections of technological wearables for all public to see and experience.

Non-precious metal sheets are introduced at varying thickness’s apart with bright artificial light placed directly behind in order to create beams of light across the walkway leading to the new staircase. There will be a large suspended installaton formed from elements of glass, precious metals, plastics and other materials commonly used in the world of contemporary design. Mixed within these will be NUD lightbulbs which have a gem like quality in themselves. The light will create reflections and shadowns off the suspended materials which will hit the existing bare and scarred walls and floors.

The exhibition plinths. The plinths were designed to look and stand like fragments of a broken material. At this stage in the exhibition the Diamond is being cut and polished and therefore the fragmentation suggests this. Each diamond is also cut uniquely and no two diamonds are exactly the same; this is the reason that the plinths are of varying shapes and sizes. The plinths are lit internally and glow suggesting that the diamond is coming to life and to attract ones attention. Screen Detailing. The screens have been designed in order to create a sense of direction for the visitors so that they are guided around the exhibition in an order so that the views of the displays are pre judged. The screens follow the concept of embedment and adornment as they are attached onto the exisiting columns similarly to the way a piece of jewellery attachesto the body.

EXHIBITION CURATION 4 students including myself were assigned the task of curating a small exhibition of Students works from both Second and Third year whom worked on a live design brief at Catterick Racecourse. The exhibition was open for public viewing within Leeds Beckett University on the Degree show evening. A selection of Students presented their Briefs and proposals to the well renowned Art Collector; Greville Worthington, whom is the owner of the Site. The task involved : - Gathering and Selecting Students Work - Designing 8 Boards which held a narrative which linked to the nature of the site. (Indesign) - Fixing any broken models. - Locating the exhibition with the most suitable lighting. - Sending the Boards to print and dressing when complete. - Clearing the surrounding spaces for health and safety as well as aesthetic quality. - Very Limited Budget.

SECOND YEAR

IAD 5 . 3 S PAC E S R E - R EAD : RESEARCH (Design Report)

This module was to help expand on knowlege, research, analysis analytical capabilities. The final result being a design report which would be the underpinning of the emerging philosophy for the design. This was also a chance to enhance ability to structure visual and written material to communicate with employers and other

Threshold - ‘Upper Mills’ is tucked away just on the headland which is on the curve of the River Calder. The Site and the main entrance for visitors are on opposite sides of the river and therefore are joined by a bridge. Therefore the first threshold is the moment that they step onto the bridge. The bridge is simplistic however inviting. Because the site feels very secluded and split off from the main road it provides a gesture which is welcoming as it invites you across onto its land. You take the journey across the bridge which is a moment of appreciation for the aesthetic beauty around. Once stepping off the bridge you approach the entrance to ‘The Hepworth’ and at this point are introduced to concrete steps which lead you down onto the level of ‘Upper Mil.’ There are two key materials which are in place at the moment which are contrasting being laid concrete and grass, this was the third threshold upon entering the building itself.

This module was the culmination of design work in the level and involved a complex Interior Architecture and Design project with comprhensive scope. In particular it looked at approaches to re-purposing and re-modelling an exhisting Corn Mill in Wakefield paying particular detail to responding to the exhisting buildings fabric and context. This module included development of a full design report which critically analysed precedent and supported personal interpretation and development of the design project from inception to finished presentation.
