Introduction to Trend

The name of the chosen trend is called 50’s Supreme. The reasons being as the 50’s and 60’s fashion was quite similar so stating the era in the name of the trend makes it easy for concumers to understand. The following research in this portfolio shows each stage of how the trend has developed. Research was based upon Hollywood Blockbusters which were due to be released in the summer of 13. Once deciding on a film, research was carried out looking at further films that were released around the same date as the chosen film is set in. This was to look in depth at costumes and styles. Iconic events of which occurred in these decades were then looked into to see if there was any link between them and a trend. The 50’s and 60’s were then the chosen two decades to look into so research was carried out looking into further depth at the styles and colours of garments. Once deciding on a wide trend, research was done to see what was on the catwalk in the pervious years and how the trend could be made different this coming year. From there the mood and colour influence of the trend was developed by looking at fashion photographer David LaChapelle and his extravagant use of colour. After creating a mood board of colour influences, the pantone palette was put together. By this point the 50’s decade in America was the chosen influence of the trend, as the 50’s was a much happier time and took more advantage of brighter colours than in Britain. Research then continued to look into textiles and fabrics and shapes of garments. This was then made into two collections; a daytime and evening. Once the Spring Summer collection had been made, it was adapted for the Autumn Winter season, this was done by adding heavier and thicker material and using darker tones from the pantone palette.

Film

The Butler Hollywood blockbuster is due to be released in 2013 and is set in the late 50’s to early 60’s. Due to their being such a famous cast featuring in the film, it is almost certain it will be up for future awards. With this in mind, a link is being created from cinema to the 50’s and 60’s fashion suggesting it will be a successful trend this summer. The fashion from the film will be an influence in the year it is being released and will be discussed a lot within the media such as magazine publications and blogs.

Grease, 1959

Breakfast at Tiffany’s , 1961

The Help, 1960

Gentleman Prefer Blondes, 1953

The Parent Trap, 1961

The following research is showing more icon films, which have already been shown in the cinema, highlighting 50’s and 60’s fashion. The colouring of the clothing is very influential and also the tailoring; tight tops paired with a skater styled skit, to extenuate a female’s small waste.

Calamity Jane, 1953

From looking at the costumes of all these films, it is clear to see a how a trend could emerge from the original fashion. They all have very similar colours, patters and styles, which could be used in today’s fashion, with just a few alterations; brighter colours, more embellishment to tailoring and more detailing to finish, such as hems, neckline and added lace.

1950’s Fashion

The following images are of women’s fashion in the 1950’s. After looking at cinema and films, a trend is being identified, which could have a huge impact on fashion in Spring Summer 13, taking the catwalk by storm.

The following images are research showing iconic and fashionable style in the era of the 1950’s. The colours of these images are very striking and influential for a Spring Summer collection. With the use of commercial colours these images are very visually interesting and represent an aspiring life style.

4

1960’s Fashion

The following images are of women’s fashion in the 1960’s. The two decades of 50’s and 60’s fashion are very similar and could possibly be interoperated into one trend. Colours from the 60’s could work better with a garment influenced by the 50’s.

With the swimwear, however the following image suggest that the 60’s swimwear is a lot more fun, using brighter colours and patterns, a range of different shaped costumes and eccentric accessories, such as oval and cat eye sunglasses.

5

Catwalk SS12, 50’s Style After looking at films to costumes to iconic events to styles, research started to suggest the 50’s and 60’s look could be a big trend on that catwalk for SS13. Therefore further research was carried out to look into what was on the catwalk of Spring Summer 12.

The following images show that the catwalk was very much influenced by the 50’s and 60’s era. However a lot of the shaping of garments was loose, with bold and bright patterns. Therefore a trend began to form, which would have a different look to the ones being shown here; Focusing on different styles, emphasizing on tight tailoring and a more dominant impact of colour. The following images are from SS12 Catwalk shows, and show a range of all designers’ collections. www.swide.com.

Louis Vuitton Catwalk SS10-12 The following images are of Louis Vuitton’s Spring Summer and Autumn Winter 2010 collection. The inspiration for this trend was based around the 50’s style; the tailoring is very tight, nipping in at the waste to extenuate the silhouette. The use of colour is placid tones and statement prints and graphic have been incorporated.

Mood and Theme

The mood of the theme is inspired by celebrations with bright vibrant colours reflecting this, which shown in the following images of research. They include celebrations of carnivals and weddings to symbolise an uplifted, excited mood. Last year on the catwalk the 50’s trend was based around darker tones of colour, with the use of a lot of browns, greys and dull shades. Therefore this upcoming trend will brighten up last years; by celebrating and embracing beautiful confident colours, which would hopefully reflect on people’s personality when dressing in them.

Mixing up and experimenting with these bright colours will make the trend a lot more fun, especially for summer evening wear, however there will also to be an element of seriousness to the trend, reflected by the original style of garments. This is why darker tones within the colour palette have been chosen, for a more traditional and professional look. The trend will signify wealth with a middle to upper-class look to it, just the same as it would have done in the 1950’s, although it will be sold within high street stores.

8

Colour Influence

The colour scheme for the trend has been greatly influenced by the eccentric photographer, David LaChapelle. His bright, vibrant emblazon represents happiness, excitement and lust. Hopefully these feelings would be felt when people look at and wear the clothing of this trend.

These colours really contrast well with the 50’s era as they are similar, however these tones are to an exaggerated and overemphasized palette.

Orange 021M

Vibrant Yellow 13-0858 TPX

River Blue 15-4720 TCX

Pink Lemonade 16-1735 TPX

Bright Green 15-5534 TCX

Ice Green 135414 TPX

Prism Pink 14-2311 TCX

Colours for the High Summer Accents are very bright and bold, without any wishy washy tones. I wanted to use similar colours that were used in the fashion of the 50’s and 60’s to keep the trend realistic, however use much brighter shades, tones and blocked statement colours. By doing the trend has been revived with a much fresher look and will look great in the summer season.

Creampuff 131026 TCX

White Alyssum 11-1001 TPX

All these colours will easily work well individually as clothing pieces for dominant statement garments such as a dress. As a lot of the bottom half of this trend will be to a skater styled skirt, the colours will be flattering to almost every figure. If a female is larger on her bottom half, she will still be able to wear a bright orange on her bottom half, as the skirt is styled to extenuate the waist, making it look smaller and flare out at your biggest part; the thigh.

For the base colours, the following tones will be used, as they are not too dark, but not light enough to be used for summer clothing. The brown, yellow and grey shades are what will be applied to heavier textile clothing such as, the cigarette trouser style, cardigan and jumper garments, and shoes. As spring is still fairy cold and I feel these light tones would compliment heavier clothing by making the material appear lighter.

Base Plaettes

Bronze Brown 18-0937 TPX

Coccoa Brown 18-1222 TPX

Bombay Brown 18-1250 TCX

Black would only be applied for embellishments and finishes, such as buttons, pockets, patterns and graphic and stitching as well as shoes and clutch bags. The reasons being because the trend is going to be a celebration of colour and for people to wear colours and tones that make them feel happy and confident, which is not what black does. Also due to the spring summer season, black is too dark and heavy to be used as anything more than an embellishment.

Mineral Yellow 14-1046 TPX

Cedar Green 18-0328 TPX

Steele Gray 18-4995 TPX

Black 6 C

Spring Accents The spring accents would be used for both summer and spring clothing. The tones are dark enough to be used in spring as they are not too vibrant yet light enough to be worn in the summer, teamed with a brighter piece to tone down the look slightly, for example one of these colours in a cardigan would tone down a bright summer dress, but would also lighten brighten up a grey pair of trousers in spring. All of the colours could easily be adapted to the majority of garments; blouse, tops, dresses, skirts and shoes. They are basic colours that will bend well and compliment each other.

Fabrics and Finishes Cotton will be used for a lot of the garments for this trend; the majority of the skater skirts, evening dresses and cardigans.

Lace will be used down the middle of the daytime shirts, either side of the buttons.

The pearls will be used for around the collar of the evening shirts, and also around the cuffs.

Linen material will be used for daytime shirts, as it is light and airy for the summer season.

Broderie Anglaise will be used as another material of daytime shirts as well as daytime dresses.

The Chino material will be used for the cigarette styled trousers.

The 50’s Supreme trend is going top be focused on the fabrics, embellishments, colours and material without the use of patterns and graphics. Last year on the catwalk a lot of floral was incorporated within the designs and it was all very busy. This trend however is focused on basic garments bringing the look back to the original style of the 50’s.

Chiffon material will be used for eveningwear. The outer layer of some skater styled skirts, as well as smart blousesand head scarfs.

Small plastic buttons will be used for shirts, trousers, jeans and skirts and will very basic. They will consist of plain colours, such as grey, black, cream and white.

The tweed material will be used for heavier material such as jackets and blazers. These garments would be introduced into the trend in early spring and reoccur in early A/W.

Crepe material will be used for summer skirts, and the drop waist past of dresses.

Denim will be used only for the drainpipe styled jeans.

Broaches will be attached to particular evening garments, such as chiffon blouses, dresses and blazers.

Flannel material will also be used for blazers but much lighter than the tweed material. This thinner material will be used more for the spring summer season.

Sequins will be used mainly for eveningwear, on clutch bags and finished on the collar and cuffs of shirts and dresses. 11

Garment Silhouettes Â

Â

The main focus of the trend to be on tailoring; synched in at the waist to give the illusion of an hourglass figure. This will apply to blazers, skirts and dresses. I want the skater skirt style to apply to both the skirts and dresses of the trend, this will flatter all figures as for a slim frame the tailored waist will emphasize curves. It will also make a larger frame appear slimmer, as the bottom half will flare out from the thigh. Straight cut knee length dresses will too have a tailored in waist with mid length arms. This look would be suitable for the work place as it is sophisticated and has a professional look to it.

The shirts of this trend will be very light and airy. I will have two main styles, one that ties at the front, like the one below. The other will hang loosely from the breast downwards, which ideally would be tucked into a skirt or pair of trousers. Jeans of the collection will be suited to a slimmer frame, as they will be very tight with a drainpipe leg. They will cut off above the ankle giving them a more summery look. The trousers of the collection will be in the style of the classic cigarette trouser, however will be high-waisted. These trousers can be used for a causal look teamed with a shirt and flat pumps, or dressed up with a pair of court heels and a blazer. Once again the trousers will be tailored in around the wait, emphasizing the hourglass silhouette.

The daytime look of this trend will be very smart and sophisticated. Bright bold colours will be worn teamed with dainty accessories, such as a pearl necklace. For a more casual look the cigarette trousers with a linen shirt and cream cardigan would be a good look. This could be parried with a pair of pumps or for a smarter look, a pair of pointed mid heels. The colours next to each garment are suggested tones, which would be best suited. For more summery look a shirt tucked into a skater skirt would look great, or a bright dominating coloured dress teamed with a small handbag and a pair of pumps. 13

the eveningwear of the collection, one again the look will be very smart and very glamorous. The neckof the dresses will be high up and no cleavage will be shown. As the base of the trend is all around taing, the dresses will synch in at the waist, as will the trousers skirts and blazers. Most of the jewellery will be over the top costume jewellery, big statement pieces, such a pearls and diamonds.

st of the dresses and skirts will come in a variety of different colours, all from the colours in the high accent tion of the pantone palette. The trend will be flattering to all sizes as for curvier women there is the skater ed garments, and for a slimmer build there are the straight dresses, emphasizing the waist as well as the cigarette trousers.

ere will be a lot of glitter, pearls and sequins stitched onto the collars and cuffs of the clothing to add lots of z and glam’ to the look. The clutch bags will have a lot of sequins on them too and shirts will have bright broaches to give them a glamorous finish. 14

50’s Supreme Adapted to High Street and Designer Brands 50’s Supreme would be a successful trend and would adapt well to the Topshop brand. The colours would be perfect as Topshop love to experiment with tones; every year having block coloured statement pieces, such as dresses. Some alterations would have to be made however, as the look of the trend is very sophisticated and the target consumers of the brand is of a younger more fashion conscious age. Therefore some of the skater skirts would have to be taken up slightly shorter and garments couldn’t be as plain as they stand now. Textiles and finishes such as items covered in sequins would have to be adapted, rather than just plain pleated cotton.

Lower cut necklines would have to be incorporated into the trend for Topshop, as they have a younger market and more variety would be needed for the consumers to chose from.

Pink Lemonade 16-1735 TPX

Topshop use a lot a cotton and crepe material, with sequins and plane plastic buttons, therefore material and fabrics wouldn’t have to be altered as their budget would be the same as what the trend already stand at. Jewellery would need to be brighter an with a more varied selection, including small studded earing are over the top eccentric earrings. Lastly, the pointed mid heals would have to be made slightly higher to appeal to a younger market, as they would be worn on a night out dancing, rather than in the office.

Â

Dark Purple 19-2524 TCX

50’s Supreme would also be a successfully sold trend in the designer market and Karen Miller would be a perfect brand for it to be sold in. Karen Millen has a very sophisticated and classy look. They too focus on the tailoring of garments synching the clothing in at the waist to emphasize the silhouette. Below the knee dresses would not need altering as they are of a very similar style to the dresses the brand already produce, however as the target consumer would be to a middle to upper class lady, the skater styled garments would have to be made longer.

Creampuff 131026 TCX

Â

The colours and tones of the clothing would have to be darkened down slightly and more neutral, to reflect a more pristine, elegant look. As the consumes of the brand are of a middle to upper class, Karan Millen can afford to spend mre money investing in expensive luxorious materials, so this would need to be changed. The brand use a lot of acetate fabric for dresses in particular, to represent silk and produce a lot of garments using around 60% of wool. Tweed would also be adapted ito the fabics for or the fabrics of heavier blazers.

Black 6 C

Delicate jewellery would have to be added to the trend, as it is a sophisticated brand that signifies class and wealth. Also, as the target consumers are likely to be aged from their mid thirties, elegance would be the key to their style.

50’s Supreme Autumn Winter 13/14

The following items have been added to the collection to adapt the Spring Summer trend to Autumn Winter. However all clothing from the previous season can be used all year round but with darker tones from the colour palette using the base and spring accents colours. Dresses and skirts can be teamed with a pair of thick black tights and material will be made thicker for garments such as cardigans and jumpers. The trend is still focused on the tailoring, which is shown by the style of jackets that will be adapted.

The following colours have been chosen from the colour palette above and would adapt well to all the summer garments. The clothes have been taken from the Spring Summer collection of the trend and are being used as examples, to show how they colours and winter trend would merge together.
