CHILDREN’S TOWN
NURSERY SCHOOL DESIGN(THESIS PROJECT)
What Is separation anxiety? There is a significant problem that kids cry and scream when their parents leave them in a new environment; the anxiety occurs when children are frightened or upset to be away from a parent or loved one. To create a school for 2-4 years old children where they can feel safe, feel free to express themselves, have different learning experiences. Children’s Town is a mini version of Manhattan; there are mini Central Park, big streets, houses, restaurant, and gym. The inspiration is coming from this cityManhattan, New York. New York is a unique city; there are thousands of people with different backgrounds. However, their kids will grow up as New York residents. I want to use the New York languages to give them a sense of hometown. When they grew up, the hometown memory can still be recalled.

02 WHITE HOTEL MONTREAL PUBLIC SPACE_Lobby/Restaurant
A boutique hotel developer based in New York City is looking to expand their global presence and has recently purchased the Beaux Arts-style Canadian Express Building located at the edge of Old Montreal in Quebec, Canada. Since the hotel is located in Montreal, Canada, the concept is from a winter point of view, the world is that covered by the ice and snow. Montreal’s winter is long compared with other cities. Thus, the local people have a lot of different events to enjoy the winter. For example, they use ice blocks to create a restaurant, and use snow to create sculptures. The hotels look similar in different countries, although they have different cultures. I used the architectural and interior design languages to connect the space with the local unique nature, make it special and marry into the local picture. I think winter is beautiful, everyone should enjoy the beauty of winter. The materials selection on the Lobby and restaurant area was focused on glass and creamy wood finishes to create a ice world. I used lots of linear languages to express a ice box image.

The public space is a double height space, the purpose is first to show the main element which is the column dramatically, and play the different scale to create a ice world. Since there is no second floor, a mezzanine is applied which turned to a standing bar for guest to look down the whole space. There are a lot of thin linear lighting whitch are falling down from ceiling to make a iced winter forest image. The staircase is also a custom piece which is made out of glass blocks in order to marry the whole environment well.

GUEST ROOM
Since the public space’s concept is ice world, to create different elements of winter, the model room’s concept is coming from snow world. The image of snow is usually white, soft, and clean. In snow world, there are no straight lines. Thus, I used curved lines and geometric shapes to build a picture of snow day view. There is a column in each guest room, instead of hiding it into the wall I chose to expose the column and use it as a lighting and a decorative fixture. The column is designed as a tree, and the headboard is designed to be a board that displays the leaves falling down from the tree. I used a dynamic shape to show the leaves, the crown also has the same shape which echoes leaves. The wall corners design and the FF&E selection are all base on the concept of creating a dynamic space which they are all rounded edges.

Guestroom Floor Typical Floor Plan
The guestroom floor has six guestrooms, two service rooms and one common space for peole who are waiting for someone and having happy-hour(food and drinks will be offered). The sizes of each guestroom are relatively similar, because I would like to let each guest to have same living experience. The lobby column is also placed at each guestroom floor to echo the public space.

UNLOCKING IIDA TRADE SHOW BOOTH
The intent of this booth design is to take advantage of a trade show booth space, bring in contemporary furnishings and accessories to create a visually dynamic and exciting co-working space which IIDA branded. The basic concept is coming from a “fingerprint.” With the development of technology, we all noticed that our design world had changed a lot. There are plenty of computer programs to let us draw the drawings, to build a threedimensional model and even render a photo realistic perspective. These different technologies help us explore our main idea. I think people must be very familiar with fingerprints, because a lot of people are using iPhones or iPads. The beauty of the fingerprint is that we use it to unlock the devices and get the information. I use the “fingerprint” concept to give the whole space a meaning which is “unlocking,” and sends a message to people that they can unlock the ideas and knowledge, exchange the opinions at the IIDA booth. A unique point of the design field is even though we can use different applications to do the design, lots of people still choose to use the pen and paper to draw their initial concept sketches. Thus, the “paper” concept was coming in as the secondary theme. I chose to use the sticky notes and rolls of tracing paper these most daily office supply that everyone uses in the design world as another language to give the booth a contrast of high-tech VS traditional tool, New VS Old. By using the most everyday office elements, the booth will let people get a sense of familiarity and resonating. It can make them feel free to exchange their thoughts, and then come up with new ideas about their works and design.

Retail Store of Julep Julep Maven is an e-commercial brand which is selling cosmetics online. They believe everyday looks and trying new trends should be easy, effortless and inspiring. The task is to develop the “architectural branding of the ecommerce business and to then design the prototype store. The general concept is mixing the science lab and a nail polish gallery into one cohesive store. Since cosmetics have a closed relationship with science and hightech, thus a image of science lab will be the main concept. The whole interior will use the white color tone to match the atmosphere of a lab, and there will be highlighted points which help the whole space have a sense of futuristic feeling. For example, a space tunnel. Nail polish are the major products of Julep. Therefore I want to design a special area to highlight this part. The polishes will be placed on the custom shelf which can create a impact to the clients.

Lobby design for The New York School of Interior Design
Introduction:
The reception lobby is the lobby of New York School of Interior Design’s 70th st. building. The facade is in beaux art style. The project is a rennovation of the lobby to make it modern and full of art sense.
Concept:
Since the building has a iconic facade, thus let the “outside image” continue to the inside is the main concept. The lobby is relatively small, incorporating horizontal lines will help create an illusion of a spacious space.
The lobby area is not big, thus use the correct layout and interior languages are important to this limited space. The line language which is a continuation from the outside facade create an associative perception.

KINTSUGI RECEPTION DESK
The inspiration is from “Kintsugi”--a Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with mixed powered gold. Kintsugi relates to the Japanese philosophy of “no mind”. The meaning is stay peaceful and accept changes. Since the lobby’s concept is stay calm, the “kintsugi’s” idea echoes the lobby’s picture. The New York School of Interior Design is a design school, it is a school that all about art and design. Therefore, I used the “kintsugi” to show the craftsman spirit, to send a message to not only the students, but also the visitors that here is a place of art and design.

HOUSE DESIGN/ARCHITECTURE PROJECT
The project is about designing a house in Tokyo, Japan. The people who live in the house is one family which has grandparents, parents and their kids. For this big family, I decided to use the old traditional Japanese wood structure to bring the old time back to the family. The purpose is not only for the old generation, but also for the young generation to learn the beauty of tradition. I think the wood structure is very beautiful and full of magic in it. By playing with different size and shape of wood piece, the whole space can be created clean, simple and alive.
