i am collective was formed in 2015, as a collective it strives to support and bring together creatives in leeds. the success of a previous event held at nation of shopkeepers in december 2014, ‘lca x lcm’ which combined artists from leeds college of art and leeds college of music for a night of live music, live art and an exhibition. this encouraged the rebrand and start of iam collective, to open up to all creatives in leeds. the collective strives to support local artists and creative people to encourage them to exhibit and perform their work in a social environment and engage with the public.

the first event was held on 3|12|2014. lca x lcm was the beginning of the collectives’ ethos. the success of this event encouraged the start of iam collective. by rebranding the name, it has opened up to all creatives in leeds to become a community of artists that are encouraged to network and communicate with eachother and the public to display their work in a creative, social environment.

“Although now passed, the ripples of this [lca x lcm] event continued, and have lead to the genesis of something more. Stepping into the Leeds art scene is a new creative group, going by the name of IAM COLLECTIVE, and we must say, they looking pretty exciting. -independent leeds

for each artist, they were briefed to submit 100 words that describe them as an artist or a description of their work. this was to show how iam collective represent them as part of a community and also for the audience to understand and connect to their work.

meeting before the event, the artists were briefed on the exhibition, the advance was handed to them detailing the setup times. as the event was held at a bar, the transition period to turn the space into a exhibition was very tight therefore a clear schedule and briefing was important to communicate to the artists.

curation of the exhibiton incorporated the space of nation of shopkeepers, using the existing interior to hang work in a creative display.

the iam artist labels enabled the audience to appreciate the artists work, also to display the artists name, to encourage networking and self promotion. this worked really well, as an collective we feel it is important for the viewer to understand the work and the artist as it is a form of communication and connects the viewer to the work.

With the event on the near horizon, we couldn’t help but excitedly look onwards and ask what the future would bring for IAM Collective : ‘Without giving too much away…we want to explore new interesting places, spaces and the independent venues that Leeds has to offer. Extending to reach a wider audience to create further dialogues and networking events to support, encourage and celebrate Leeds arts and music.’
