nce upon a time there was a little boy and a little girl, they grew up into hard working adults, but secretly they were looking for their happily ever after. Inspired by a beautiful fairy tale bed from So To Bed, the Stylista Team went in search of fairytale inspiration. Not only did we find some stunning chandeliers from the Contemporary Chandelier Company (page 10), bedding from the Kylie range and accessories from Amara but we also uncovered the perfect fairy tale retreat, in the in the beautiful Dordogne region of France. Bijou Cottage, a beautifully restored, 15th century former-gatehouse boasts modern luxuries throughout whilst retaining fairytale charm and the Ice Hotel for anyone looking for a romantic winter break. And for those little boys and girls who are still yet to grow up we have some beautiful ideas for creating their fairytale kingdom with princesses, dragons, knights in shining armour and thrones for little kings and queens. So inspired by all the little gems we uncovered I am planning to turn a little bit of our home into a corner of Neverland!

HOTEL As soon as winter begins, a team of snow builders, architects, designers and artists from all over the world gather in the little town of Jukkasjärvi far north of the Arctic Circle. Under the direction of the ICEHOTEL Art & Design Group, they create each year’s version of ICEHOTEL...

The building process starts in mid-November when the snow guns start humming and large clouds of snow start to drift along the Torne River. The snow is sprayed on huge steel forms and allowed to freeze. After a couple of days, the forms are removed, leaving a maze of free-standing corridors of snow. In the corridors, dividing walls are built in order to create rooms and suites. Ice blocks, harvested at springtime from Torne River, are now being transported into the hotel where selected artists from all over the world start creating the art and design of the persihable material. Some of them are experienced ice artists, some of them have never experienced temperature below sub zero. Experienced or not, each year they create new and unique art and design at ICEHOTEL. To be able to create ICEHOTEL and ensuring its construction; provide support to the artists and setting the lights, the construction is done in several phases. As one section is completed, it opens to visitors and overnight guests, while the other sections are still under construction

If you are on location during the building phase you can gain a closer insight into the unique requirements that apply when building and creating art and architecture in snow and ice. As they build ICEHOTEL under the open sky, using the natural materials of the winter season, their time plan and building progress depends on Mother Nature and therefore they ask guests to make allowances for any deviations from the plan. When the hotel is completed, a hectic time begins. Thousands of guests will sleep in rooms made of ice and snow, over a hundred couples will share wedding vows in the Ice church and many cold drinks will be enjoyed in ABSOLUT ICEBAR. Until spring arrives and the sun starts to unthaw the walls of snow and we finally close the hotel and let it slowly return to its origin, Torne River icehotel.com

NICK HORDERN VISITS THE LIVADIA PALACE & THE CHATEAU DU CHAMPS BATAILLE

T

he English Billiard Room is almost de riguer in the finest stately homes stretching from Yalta’s Livadia Palace to Normandy’s Chateau du Champs Bataille. Guests can unwind after dinner, testing their acumen, or lack of it, on a carpet of green baize over brandy and cigars. Yet, Livadia Palace’s salon de jeu, panelled in English chestnut, has less convivial associations. It was where Tsar Nicholas and his family spent their last sportif moments before their executions. Later, in 1945, it was the same room where an agreement was signed between Stalin, Roosevelt and Churchill that gifted Eastern Europe to the Soviets. In contrast, the chateau’s billiard room was stylish and exuberant, like its owner, Parisian Jacques Garcia. I had arrived on his birthday.

SOVIET DANUBE STEAMSHIP COMPANY In my ‘Madmen’ days in New York, two men in suits arrived at my BBDO office on Madison Avenue to quiz me on my vacation behind the Iron Curtain. The FBI were interested in my voyage on the Russian steamship, MS Moldavia, cruising down the Danube through 7 countries and transferring to a liner at the Black Sea which took me to Yalta in the Crimea. En route I had stopped off in Budapest. I had a Letter of Introduction from Borden Stevenson, son of Adlai, former US Ambassador to the UN, to call in on America’s envoy, Martin Hillenbrand. I could hear the Archbishop of all Hungary pacing up and down in the room above. Cardinal Mindszenty had been freed by the rebels in 1956 from an underground cell in the Hungarian Secret Police’s (AVO) notorious

LIVADIA PALACE, YALTA, U.S.S.R At Yalta, I visited Livadia Palace, set in spectacular gardens above thickly wooded slopes that drop to the Black Sea. It has a long façade of white Inkerman stone and a Carrara marble portico. The ground floor has the White Hall, the Tsar’s Grand Reception Study, waiting room, white marbled dining room and English billiard-room. These rooms, cordoned off with ropes, could only be viewed at a distance, and were dull and gloomy.

60 Andrassy Street. The cleric had spent a dozen years holed up in the US Embassy as a pawn in the Cold War. The U.S. Harper’s Bazaar had given me my first magazine commission, and sensing a scoop on my journalistic debut, I requested an interview with the state fugitive. It was declined. The next day in my well-appointed cabin, I breakfasted on caviar, cream cake and Turkish coffee laced with cognac, before docking at Belgrade.

Having instructed us to don our felt slippers, the officious female Intourist guide ridiculed Churchill as a drunken sot and lauded Stalin, the man who had executed as many Russians as Jews had been through Hitler’s gas chambers. My recollection of Yalta with its shingle beaches, was less of a resort than of a sanatoria, people shuffling through town in pyjamas and white flannelled bathrobes in bright sunlight, seeking the cures. After dining on sturgeon washed down by a fine muscadet from vineyards above the bay, I was invited by Swedish agronomists to a party. I returned to the Russian liner at 3 a.m.. After breakfast, I was accused of espionage by the Captain. Could I explain myself? The charge was dropped when I threatened to include the incident in my article.

CHATEAU DU CHAMP BATAIILE, LE NEUBOURG, NORMANDY I enjoyed a relaxed crossing from Portsmouth to Caen on Brittany Ferries, then drove to southern Normandy to visit one of France’s most imposing 17th-century chateaux, completely restored from near ruin by Jacques Garcia, France’s most prominent interior designer and landscape architect. Chateau du Champ de Bataille (Castle on the Field of Battle) was built on the historic site where Normandy gained its independence when William Long Sword defeated Robert the Dane in 968 A.D.. In 1651 Alexandre de Crequi intrigued against the young Louis X1V and was exiled by Mazarin, Regent. Not to be outdone, in 1653, Crequi engaged the maestros who would later create Versailles, Louis Le Vau to build his 50-room chateau, and Andre Le Notre to landscape a 90-acre garden. In 1789, revolutionaries trashed the estate and in WW1, Champ Bataille was a hospital, in WW11 German Army Officer’s Mess. When Garcia, who counts the Sultan of Brunei as one of his clients, bought the property in 1992, the place was a wreck. Only the chateau’s outer shell stood, the garden a wasteland. Today, the Champ Bataille boasts huge apartments whose

rich baroque decoration is quite breathtaking. The owner, who is an avid collector of furniture and royal art objects scattered to the winds after the French Revolution, has restored the chateau and gardens to its former glory – and added his own embellishments, such as Roman temples and cascading waterfalls. Open-air operas are performed to packed audiences He and I arrived coincidentally at the same time. “I was faced with one of the great masterpieces of French architecture. I just wanted to make it more sublime,” said the man who is a Chevalier in the order of the Legion d’honneur.. During the dinner party for his birthday, he throws caution to the winds, emptying treasures from display cabinets and feasting on gourmet food and drink served on priceless Sevres porcelain and crystal. Wonderful windows

T

hinking of redecorating a room? You’ve chosen the colour scheme, the flooring, furniture and accessories but what kind of window treatment will you use? Even right back to Neanderthal times when animal hides were used to cover the windows of a cave the key reasons for covering, dressing or treating our windows haven’t changed. Whether for privacy purposes or to keep light and/or heat both in and out there are a number of different options to choose from today but more over with the vast ranges of fabrics, colours, metallic’s, patterns and textures you make your window into a focal feature of the room. Pre 16th Century wooden shutters were the form of window treatments but due to the cold English winters curtains or draperies became popular in the late 1700’s. In the beginning these were of very basic design, just a large piece of heavy cloth attached to a long metal pole by metal rings pierced through at the top of the fabric, resembling the common curtain pole which we know today. However, as time evolved people learned to incorporate the dressing of the window into the whole interior design of a room. Luxurious fabrics like velvet and brocade were favoured by the French and Italians in the early 17th century and during this time the use of net curtains became more frequent. With the English producing net curtains using handcrafted silk imported from Belgium and Ireland while others were made from finely woven cotton and organdy, a stiff transparent fabric. Today we have so many options available to us to create a stunning window design. Whether you choose curtains of which I warn you there are around 20 different designs just in terms of how the curtain is made, for example tab top, eyelet, pencil pleats and so on, then of course you

have to choose the fabric! Or perhaps you’ll choose blinds and again not a straight forward choice from vertical slats, Venetian, Roman and more with their unique way in which they allow light to filter into a room. Personally I love the way sunlight produces a striped reflection on the opposing wall in our hallway when the slats are open on the Venetian blind. You may well choose to use a combination of products to dress the window. The large window in my bedroom occupies about 70% of that wall. The view from it looks across the fields making the window a beautiful seasonal changing picture. I wanted to frame this and not block it out with a net curtain but also needed to retain a certain amount of privacy as it is to the front of the house. The room is very sunny (when the sun is shining of course) which is wonderful and warming, however there are occasions when I need to block out the light. To meet my window criteria I’ve opted for a white black-out roller blind which when drawn immediately plunges the room into darkness, very effective indeed. Whilst it looks great up against the white walls and white wooden floor, when closed it is like a blank canvass. So to add a splash of colour and create a frame for when the blind is opened or closed I’ve used two wine red organza drapes hung from a wrought iron pole which have been hung centrally on either side and loosely knotted halfway down level with the bottom of the window sill, the remaining material reaching the floor. The composition provides my bedroom with adequate privacy and allows in ample light due to the semi-transparent nature of the fabric. It creates a feature of the wall and frames the picturesque view outside. Here are some of the hottest window treatments available, I particularly love the roller blind art on pages 36-7. Enjoy and be inspired!

enetian blinds are mainly made from wood or aluminium. They create an ambient feel when daylight filters through the slats. Whilst not the most heat preserving of window dressings they provide fantastic privacy by tilting the slats without blocking out the daylight. The downside is they do seem to attract the dust so regular cleaning is a must! I suggest using a soft cloth or duster or invest in a venetian blind cleaner for a speedier clean like this one from Dunelm Mill for £2.50!
