NAHB Announces New Chairman

At the conclusion of last month’s Spring Leadership Meetings, NAHB Chairman Dean Mon informed the Board of Directors that he would be unable to complete the remainder of his term due to personal reasons and was resigning his chairmanship.

Mon will continue to be an active member of the Federation, providing guidance to both NAHB leadership and members going forward. His leadership this year during the COVID-19 pandemic helped position the housing industry as an essential business that allowed our members to continue working, providing for their families and building homes during this critical time.

Effective immediately, NAHB First Vice Chairman Chuck Fowke, a custom home builder from Tampa, Fla., will take on the duties of chairman. His chairmanship will continue through the 2022 International Builders’ Show, Feb. 8-10 in Orlando.

Immediate Past Chairman Greg Ugalde will continue his duties as past chair during this same time period. Jerry Konter, of Savannah, Ga., will remain Second Vice Chair and Alicia Huey, of Birmingham, Ala., Third Vice Chair until the next senior officer election takes place at the 2021 Builders’ Show in Orlando Feb. 11, 2021.

These changes will pull private development practices into the UG so that in can be changed more efficiently in the UDO. The proposed updates to process and procedures were passed through the Planning Commission on May 28 and then through City Council on June 9. These changes went into effect immediately. Staff will continue to keep the builder community informed once the updates to the Standard Specifications section of the manual are finalized.

Cheers to 20 Years: Wishing Gina a Happy Retirement

Although most of us know Gina Battle as the Parade of Homes Director, she first joined the KCHBA staff in the early 1980s. Her first tenure at KCHBA lasted almost a decade, during which she focused on membership healthcare. It was not until Gina’s second time on staff at the KCHBA that she became the Parade of Homes Director. Gina’s first Parade was in the Fall of 2010, which clocked in at 192 homes. For 10 years Gina oversaw a Parade of Homes that steadily grew, with Parades now frequently being double the size of her first one.

Gina retired at the beginning of June. Before she packed up her office, we sat down to talk about her almost 20 combined years with the KCHBA.

How did you first come to work for the KCHBA?

“The first time around a coworker at my current job moved to the HBA,” said Gina. “She referred me and I was hired by the HBA shortly after.” In 2010, Gina was made aware the KCHBA needed a Parade of Homes Director and she joined the staff once again. Continued on page 9

What have you seen change over the years?

The KCHBA itself has seen major changes in its 83 years. When reflecting on her first tenure, Gina says the difference in meetings sticks out in her head. “Board meetings were a big affair, with cocktails followed by a steak lunch.” Monthly membership gatherings also looked a bit different. “We had to book a hotel ballroom every month to hold these meetings. Times have really changed.”

Gina has also seen housing design trends evolve. In her opinion, it was often for the better. “I really enjoy the way the houses look right now. I love the modern take on retro trends and all the mixed materials being used within the homes. I also love the diversity of lighting fixtures. They add so much character.”

What have you enjoyed most about being the Parade of Homes Director?

“I loved being part of a project that I believe to be of great value. Not just to the builders, but to the vendors, suppliers, the trade force, realtors, bankers… all the different trades that make a house a home. It was a pretty great gig.” And Gina always loved seeing everyone come together to celebrate the Parade. “I’ll miss the awards ceremonies. They’re just fun; I get energy from them and everyone is happy to be there… I have also had great co-workers. We had a lot of fun over the years.”

One thing Gina will NOT miss is lugging Parade guide boxes around. Which makes sense, as she regularly ordered upwards of 1,500 boxes for each Parade. “Luckily, I had more help with that over the past few years.”

What are you most looking forward to in retirement?

“So much!” Gina exclaimed. As far as a daily routine, “I look forward to being able to get up and stay in my pajamas until 9:00 or 10:00 while I drink my coffee.” Although getting a few house projects completed is on her agenda, Gina does not plan to spend all her time at home. She is looking forward to future travels, seeing more of her grandkids and friends, and possibly volunteering with Veterans Community Project.

We already miss seeing Gina around the office, but the KCHBA congratulates her on a well-deserved retirement!

NAHB Safety Handbook Primes Builders on Newly Released OSHA Regulations

NAHBNow, 6/16/20

In the residential construction industry, a safe work environment and well-written, up-to-date safety program isn’t optional; it’s essential. Not only does it keep employees healthy and safe, but it can stave off huge losses, including everything from workers’ compensation to equipment issues, administrative costs and even periods of low productivity.

BuilderBooks, the publishing arm of NAHB, recently released the fourth edition of its Jobsite Safety Handbook to help home builders navigate and comply with the latest OSHA requirements and keep workers safe on the jobsite.

The comprehensive guide, that features both English and Spanish translations, describes how those in the residential construction industry can comply with OSHA regulations while focusing on the most common hazards found on jobsites. It also covers the key issues residential builders and trade contractors need to focus on to reduce accidents and injuries.

The pocket-sized handbook includes a series of general safety tips that are explained in simple terms and are accompanied by illustrated, colorful examples of common best practices that can be incorporated into a company’s safety and health programs.

“The health and safety of our workers is the top priority on any jobsite,” said NAHB Chairman Dean Mon, a home builder and developer from Shrewsbury, N.J. “The new edition of this handbook is a great resource that covers key safety issues and offers concise tips for complying with OSHA regulations to keep workers safe.”

Continued on page 11

With clear illustration and color photographs, the Jobsite Safety Handbook includes new information on topics such as:

Fall protection for ro ofing work and around openings

Personal Protective Equipment

Working in confined spaces

Heat and cold stress

Hazardous materials and silica

First aid and medical services

Employer duties, including training and protective equipment
