hris Medina has had his share of hardships. Born and raised in the Philippines, he experienced poverty during childhood and then systemic infections as a teenager. As a result of his illness, he had to have several surgeries that left him in a coma for 2 months, and sick and vulnerable to bullying from classmates.

And a few days later, Chris’s brother was murdered. Shocked and devastated, Chris borrowed a friend’s credit card to buy himself and his mom plane tickets back to the Philippines for the funeral. He had to borrow money to pay for his brother’s burial, which only compounded his debts. Upon returning to the U.S., Chris knew something had to change.

Years later, when Chris and his wife had a chance to make a new life for themselves in the United States, they jumped at the opportunity. Together with their five-yearold son, they immigrated to America, each with a nursing background. But they had no credit, Chris was working two jobs until he could pass his nursing boards. After a few years they were on their feet again, and Chris and his wife decided they needed to invest their money to continue to create wealth for themselves. What they weren’t expecting was the economic crash of 2008 that decimated their property investments and left them in a financial mess. “I lost my house, my credit cards were maxed out, and we were living paycheck to paycheck,” Chris says. “It was a nightmare instead of a dream.” When his brother, a former police officer called him in late 2010 to ask for money, Chris had to tell him “I can’t.” Even though his brother was living in a dangerous situation back in the Philippines and needed to get out, Chris didn’t have the funds to help. “He asked to borrow some money that could help him get away, and I was so broke I couldn’t send him anything,” Chris says. “I was so swamped with debt.”

He needed to be able to support his family, pay off debt, and save his ailing marriage. Chris, while mourning the loss of his brother, came back to the United States with a newfound motivation and conviction. Fortunately he’d been reintroduced to Yoli.
