THE SECOND ANNUAL NATIONAL HBCU PRE-LAW SUMMIT
Paying It Forward: The HBCU Way September 25, 2015 Greetings and Welcome Future Lawyers and Friends! It is truly a blessing and honor to once again host the Second Annual National HBCU Pre-Law Summit and Law Expo - and this time in Atlanta, Georgia – a city that is well-known for its rich African American culture, its historic role in the American Civil Rights Movement, and its famous Black colleges in the Atlanta University Center. I want to congratulate each of you for taking the time and the initiative to register for and show up to this momentous event, an event especially designed just for you – HBCU students and graduates with an interest in going to law school and becoming lawyers. The time you take to participate in this event is a necessary investment in your future. Know that every single law student and attorney who is participating in this event is doing so because they genuinely believe in YOU and believe in paying it forward. They are willing to sacrifice their time, talent and energy to make a deposit into and invest in you – future members of our beloved legal profession – one that is in tremendous need of greater diversity. I am particularly proud of The National HBCU Pre-Law Summit because it was created by an HBCU graduate for HBCU students and graduates in order to fill a void by starting something that didn’t currently exist and providing a special forum for those from that particular collegiate experience. This event provides participants with a truly impactful, high-quality and game-changing information and resource-sharing, networking and connection-building event. When people ask me what makes this event so unique and different from other pre-law events, I share that this event has heart. The HBCU experience in this country is quite special because it enables African American students to work towards their academic goals in a family-like environment without having to worry about people questioning their abilities simply because of their race – which is something they will unfortunately face once they step out of that protective environment. I go on to share that at this event we not only provide the information that HBCU students really need regarding what it takes to be truly excellent, competitive and strategic in law school admission, the law school experience and legal careers; but we also directly address those additional challenges, issues and concerns that HBCU graduates face in making the tough transition into law school – and particularly entering into predominantly White institutions (PWI) – which for me was a major and dramatic culture shock that I was in no way prepared for. We also discuss the considerations for those who are thinking about attending one of the six HBCU law schools in our nation that each have incredible missions and legacies and continue to serve a very important role in advancing diversity in legal education and in the legal profession - now and in the future. And we are so excited to actually have the deans from ALL of these law schools present this weekend to talk about their institutions. What a treat! In addition, we are grateful that so many of the speakers, presenters, moderators and panelists at this event are also proud graduates of HBCUs and have a special sensitivity to and understanding of the added difficulties and burdens one must take on as African Americans attending PWIs and entering into one of the least diverse major professions in 4

our nation. They will openly, honestly and thoughtfully share their personal experiences and hard-learned strategies for navigating through and succeeding in these rough and bumpy waters. As an HBCU graduate and a first-generation college graduate, law student and lawyer, the importance of the Black college experience in my life is not lost on me. The one thing that I think it impressed upon me more than anything was my urgent social responsibility to give back to my community and my understanding that my success was more than about me achieving my personal goals but also helping others. It helped further instill that belief in paying it forward – and that is why we are all here this weekend. We are all giving our best to you - and ask only one thing in return – that you do the same for others. When I reflect on my pre-law school experiences, I most remember the fact that I didn’t have a solid support system of like-minded peers who had similar goals and aspirations of pursuing law degrees, I didn’t know any law students and lawyers who could help guide me through the process, and I didn’t have a clue about what law schools were looking for outside of whatever I could glean from reading their application packages and view books at face value. If you are currently in a similar situation, everything has changed for you by attending this event this weekend. This is a brand new day of possibilities. You now have access to other like-minded peers with high aspirations – not just from your school but from around the country. You now have the opportunity to meet law students and lawyers who truly care about your future and want to see you successfully get into law school, pass the bar and pursue a meaningful career. You now have people “in the know” who work in law school admissions environments everyday to help demystify the admissions and financial aid landscape. Although this event is free, it is truly priceless – and no dollar amount or entry fee can be affixed to the purchase of a ticket. If you fully engage and take complete advantage of all this experience offers to you, it can and will change the game for you. The value of that is something money can’t buy. We will tell you the harsh realities of the tough educational endeavor and professional pursuit you have chosen, while at the same time barraging you with positive messaging, role models and solid advice to reassure you that you can do this – and you can go even farther and do even better than we did without the benefit of this event. The only thing that both I and those participating ask from you – is that you commit to paying it forward. Help someone else, pass it along. It is what we believe in at the National HBCU Pre-Law Summit because it is the “HBCU way” – plain and simple. The Black college environment with its trials and triumphs further reenergized in me the spirit and desire to care about and give back to the community and to make sure that I was there for those coming behind me. My prayer is that this event will have that type of impact on you – so that you will remember that not forgetting those who want to follow in your footsteps is the only way we can ALL move forward. To me, you are my family, and I genuinely want to see each and every one of you reach your highest potential and receive the types of worthy opportunities that can build you up and fully utilize the amazing talent that you possess inside of you. No matter what – be your absolute best and always consider ways you can give back to and contribute in every environment you are a part of to make things better for those around you and especially for those coming behind you. You, your actions and your contributions all make a difference – every single day. On behalf of all of the extraordinary people who are here for YOU at this weekend’s event, we welcome you to law school and the legal profession. As you climb the ladder of success, we encourage you to continue to embrace and pull up others who choose to follow your path as you achieve the various milestones in this journey to fulfilling your goals. Remember HBCU student and graduate, you must - it’s the HBCU way. Wishing you the very best of good success in all of your endeavors,
Evangeline

GREETINGS FROM THE ATLANTA BAR ASSOCIATION Dear National HBCU Pre-Law Summit & Law Expo Members, Attendees, and Guests: On behalf of the Atlanta Bar Association, it is my pleasure to welcome you to Atlanta for the Second Annual National HBCU Pre-Law Summit & Law Expo 2015. Atlanta is a culturally diverse city with a very rich history and is proud to be home to many of our nation’s premier HBCUs. Moreover, in addition to being the birthplace of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Atlanta played a critical and pivotal role in galvanizing voting power, gaining access to public facilities and institutions, and increasing opportunities for all Americans. I commend you for your groundbreaking National HBCU Pre-Law Summit & Law Expo program, which I understand is the only event of its kind in the country specifically focused on addressing the unique issues, concerns and challenges facing HBCU students and graduates interested in going to law school and becoming lawyers. Formed in 1888, the Atlanta Bar Association is the largest voluntary bar association in the southeast United States, with a membership of over 6,000 members throughout the metro Atlanta region. Our programs, service and outreach continue to grow and serve our members and community and our association has earned a national reputation for successful and innovative programs. Our mission is to promote professionalism and the fair administration of justice in our community, while also providing quality programs and benefits to our diverse membership. Our vibrant bar association gives members a chance to get and stay involved in the legal community. Participation in Sections provides members with leadership opportunities with 22 different Boards and our numerous committees, social events and community outreach programs cultivate professional skills and personal relationships. We enjoy healthy, collaborative relationships with other community bar associations, including the State Bar of Georgia, minority bars and many sister bar associations. In 2000, the Atlanta Bar led the way in forming the MultiBar Leadership Council (MBLC), which brings representatives from 17 local bar associations together each month to discuss ways to enhance diversity and inclusion in the law. Further, the Atlanta Bar proudly promotes diversity in the legal profession. Our Minority and Diversity Clerkship Program, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, offers law firm clerkships for minority and diverse 1L students attending the five accredited Georgia law schools and our Summer Law Internship Program (“SLIP”) provides high school students with an opportunities for paid internships with Atlanta area law firms, corporations, pro bono organizations and courts. We commend you on your extensive efforts to promote and foster diversity in the legal profession. Again, on behalf of the Atlanta Bar Association, we are so pleased to welcome you to the Second Annual National HBCU Pre-Law Summit & Law Expo 2015. Best wishes for a wonderful program. Sincerely,

The 2015 National HBCU Pre-Law Summit
Greetings: As President of the Georgia Association of Black Women Attorneys (“GABWA”), I welcome you to the Second Annual National HBCU Pre-Law Summit. GABWA is a 34-year-old voluntary bar organization, which has a mission to nurture, support and galvanize the power of Black women attorneys, advocate for women and children and empower our communities. Our theme in 2015 is Growing Stronger in your Passion, Purpose and Power. The practice of law is a noble and gratifying profession. Our members know and understand the tremendous amount of work, time and effort it takes to successfully navigate law school and the practice of law. GABWA is proud to support the National HBCU Pre-Law Summit and commends the planners for their phenomenal work in providing transparency to the process and helping students navigate the law school admission and selection process. Over the next few days, you will be provided invaluable information that directly addresses the unique challenges and concerns that students and graduates of historically black colleges and universities have, and the special issues they will face in pre-law preparation and success, law school admission, law school selection, the law school experience, and in their postlaw school career job searches. I applaud you for taking charge of your education and career by attending this year’s Summit. My very best wishes as you embark on this journey. Don’t hesitate to call on me or GABWA if we can ever be of service to you. May you continue to grow stronger in your passion, purpose and power. Sincerely,

THE SECOND ANNUAL NATIONAL HBCU PRE-LAW SUMMIT
Greetings Legal Scholars of Tomorrow: As Chair of the National Black Law Student Association (NBLSA) and as an HBCU graduate of Hampton University, I would first like to applaud your initiative and drive. These are the requisite characteristics that a scholar seeking to enter the most prestigious profession need to embody. I commend your initiative to see fit to attend the 2nd Annual National HBCU Pre-Law Summit. Your willingness to attend this conference is an expression of your individual passion and motivation to meet your current goal: getting into law school. You are certainly one step ahead of where I was when I was on my pre-law journey. I wish you much success. Last year, I participated in the Inaugural National HBCU Pre-Law Summit at North Carolina Central School of Law. I am confident that you will leave this conference with the tools necessary to successfully matriculate into your desired law school. Mrs. Evangeline Mitchell has created a remarkable resource for you. Take full advantage! In addition to maximizing the opportunities presented at this conference, please be sure to join NBLSA’s Pre-Law Division by navigating to www.nblsa.org/prelaw. We are committed to increasing the number of culturally responsible Black and minority law students who will eventually become culturally responsible Black and minority attorneys who excel academically, succeed professionally, and positively impact the community. While this year I am not able to attend, take note of law student leaders in attendance. These are some of the brightest and most successful Black law students in the country. Get their information and stay in touch. NBLSA is looking forward to assisting your journey to legal excellence as you blaze into law school. I did it, so can you! I wish you much success on your pre-law adventure and be sure to enjoy the 2nd Annual National HBCU Pre-Law Summit. To a better BLSA,

THE SECOND ANNUAL NATIONAL HBCU PRE-LAW SUMMIT
Lift Every Voice and Sing By James Weldon Johnson Lift every voice and sing Till earth and heaven ring, Ring with the harmonies of Liberty; Let our rejoicing rise High as the listening skies, Let it resound loud as the rolling sea. Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us, Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us, Facing the rising sun of our new day begun Let us march on till victory is won. Stony the road we trod, Bitter the chastening rod, Felt in the days when hope unborn had died; Yet with a steady beat, Have not our weary feet Come to the place for which our fathers sighed? We have come over a way that with tears has been watered, We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered, Out from the gloomy past, Till now we stand at last Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast. God of our weary years, God of our silent tears, Thou who has brought us thus far on the way; Thou who has by Thy might Led us into the light, Keep us forever in the path, we pray. Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee, Lest, our hearts drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee; Shadowed beneath Thy hand, May we forever stand. True to our God, True to our native land. National HBCU Pre-Law Summit • P.O. Box 631234 • Houston, Texas 77263 • info@hbcuprelawsummit.org • www.hbcuprelawsummit.org

Quality. Opportunity. Value.
Getting a quality legal education in Miami—the largest legal market in Florida and a gateway to the global marketplace—helps maximize your employment prospects after graduation. Why? Because you will have the opportunity to gain real legal experience while here. Many of the nation’s largest law firms have a presence in Miami. There are more than 250 judges in Miami-Dade and Broward counties combined. The criminal law bar in South Florida is the largest in the state. Opportunities like these allow you to connect with a vast network of legal professionals and gain valuable experience while you study. The opportunity—and the work—is out there. The only thing missing is you.

ABOUT NATIONAL BLACK LAW STUDENTS ASSOCIATION (“NBLSA”): Founded in 1968, NBLSA is a 501(c)(3) corporation and one of the nation's largest student-run organizations of its kind, representing thousands of minority law students from more than 200 chapters and affiliates throughout the world. NBLSA’s mission is to increase the number of culturally responsible Black and minority attorneys who excel academically, succeed professionally, and positively impact the community. Its membership is comprised of pre-law students, law students, and alumni attorneys.

Pre-Law members also receive tools necessary to make their law school dreams a reality—from LSAT prep to First Year Success, and everything in between.
NBLSA’S SUPPORT OF THE NATIONAL HBCU PRE-LAW SUMMIT: Each year, NBLSA strives to give back to pre-law students by serving as panelists for the National HBCU Pre-Law Summit and the National Black Pre-Law Conference. NBLSA’s national directors seek to inspire and educate future legal leaders to pursue a legal education, while providing them with the tools necessary to succeed. We look forward to sharing our law school and leadership experiences with attendees this year, while also highlighting the benefits of joining NBLSA.
