YOUNG PERSON’S CONCERT SCHEDULE FOR 2011-12 ANNOUNCED

April 13th 10:00 am and 11:30 am The HSO is delighted to announce that the Hathaway Family Foundation has once again given the gift of music to thousands of young people throughout Central Pennsylvania through their funding of the HSO’s Young Person’s Concerts for the 2011/12 concert season. YOUNG PERSON’S CONCERT...CONTINUED Two concert dates have been selected for very special student performances of great classical music with the HSO: Friday, November 18, 2011 and April 13, 2012. On both dates two 45-minute performances will be offered – the first at 10:00 am; the second at 11:30 am. The fall concert, targeted for older elementary students (ideally grades 3, 4, and 5), will feature music inspired by nature: Surging Sea (Debussy’s La Mer) and twentieth century composer, Alan Hovaness’ Mysterious Mountain. If you’ve been in attendance at one of the HSO’s Young Person’s Concerts previously, you will know that Maestro Stuart Malina and the Harrisburg Symphony prepare a fabulous ageappropriate program that incorporates some conversation – roughly one-third of the program will be spoken word and conversation with the audience – and two-thirds beautiful orchestral music performed by the HSO. Storytelling will capture the imagination of middle school age students as Maestro Malina and the HSO take to the stage in April with music of myth and legend featuring Aaron Copland’s Billy the Kid Suite and Don Quixote by Richard Strauss. This program promises to delight all ages with particular attention to the adventurous middle school audience.

The Harrisburg Symphony Youth Orchestras are comprised of both the HSYO (full orchestra for grades 9 – 12) and the JYSO (string players in grades 6 – 9). Maestra Tara Simoncic, Music Director of the Harrisburg Symphony Youth Orchestras and conductor of HSYO is pleased to welcome Krista Kriel to the artistic staff of the HSYO as conductor of the Junior Youth String Orchestra and Keith Richardson to the administrative staff as Harrisburg Symphony Youth Orchestras Administrator.
Hardly a newcomer to the HSYO staff, but in a newly created position, Mr. Keith Richardson is the now the HSYO Administrator. Mr. Richardson is currently Director of Bands at Lower Dauphin High School in Hummelstown. There he directs the Concert, Marching and Jazz Bands. He has earned a B.A. in Music Performance and a B.S. in Music Education from Lebanon Valley College along with a Masters in Music Education from Duquesne University. Keith was also honored in 2009 by the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards with its “National Board Certification” in recognition of his exemplary teaching. Welcome to these new Harrisburg Symphony Youth Orchestras staff persons! IN OTHER HSYO NEWS: Rehearsals for both the HSYO and JYSO will be held on MONDAY evenings for the 2011-12 season. The JYSO will rehearse from 6 – 8 pm at Central Dauphin East High School. The HSYO will rehearse from 7 – 9:30 pm on the same Monday evenings. As you will note, there is a planned schedule overlap, allowing the two orchestras to plan cooperative efforts and to rehease together upon occasion. The streamlined schedule will also allow for efficiency in sectional coaching dates. Both the HYSO and JYSO will have six coaching sessions throughout the season, enhancing their skills as fine ensemble players. First rehearsal night is Monday, September 12, 2011.
PERFECT CONCERTS FOR FAMILIES!
Krista is a 1992 graduate of Messiah College, holding a Bachelor of Science in Music Education with an emphasis on violin. She has been instructed on violin by Dr. Norman Nunamaker and Kathy Ferguson. Krista has taught for 17 years, starting her career as an Elementary Band and General Music teacher in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania. Her last 13 years have been spent teaching and conducting string and symphonic orchestras for the Carlisle School District and the Gettysburg Area School District. She conducted the District 7 String Fest in 2008 and the Dauphin County High School Orchestra Festival in 2010. Along with teaching in Gettysburg, Krista is an Adjunct Assistant at Sunderman Conservatory, teaching a collaborative Instrumental Methods class. Recently Krista and her auditioned high school string ensemble spent time in Germany and Austria where they performed at the Neuschwanstein Castle in the Alps, Mirabell Gardens in Salzburg and at the Haus der Musik in Vienna. Her high school orchestras have competed throughout North America and in 2000 were ranked in the top 10 of all competing orchestras within North American Music Festivals. Besides teaching and conducting, Krista plays violin for the Carlisle String Quartet, and the Gettysburg Chamber Orchestra. Krista has also played for the Gettysburg Festival Orchestra, Theatre Harrisburg, the Cumberland Valley Symphonic Orchestra, the Gettysburg College Orchestra, the Hanover String Quartet, the Grosse String Quartet and the Latimore String Quartet.

Last season, the HSO’s Education Committee experimented with a new program especially designed for young people attending Masterworks concerts. Welcome to the Concert is back for a second exciting season with crafts, activities, musician interviews, conducting lessons, and more. Young people attending Masterworks concerts are invited to take part in this free program (outside of Forum section 208) in the Forum Lobby 45 minutes prior to concert time. That’s 7:15 pm for Saturday evening concerts; 2:15 pm for Sunday afternoon concerts. Parents and grandparents are welcome as observers. This program is all about young people becoming familiar with the music, the composers, styles and forms in music, and best of all, the musicians who are playing the concerts.
