TRUMPET MASTER CLASS WITH HSO PRINCIPAL TRUMPET, PHIL SNEDECOR Saturday, May 14th at 2:00 pm The Forum, Harrisburg, 5th and Walnut Streets Trumpet players take note as you will have a very special opportunity to work with HSO principal trumpet, Phil Snedecor, in a clinic and master class on Saturday, May 14th, starting at 2:00 pm at the Forum, 5th and Walnut Streets in downtown Harrisburg. The format of this special session with Mr. Snedecor will follow that of a mini-clinic in which he will first demonstrate some techniques followed by a master class, in which selected student trumpet players will play a piece or portion of a piece for critique by Mr. Snedecor. A master class is meant to be a helpful tool in a musician’s study of his/her instrument. By receiving feedback on style and technique, the student may achieve a new level of competence in performance on the instrument. MASTER CLASS OBSERVERS ARE WELCOME TO ATTEND BOTH THE 11:00 AM REHEARSAL OF THE HSO ON SATURDAY, MAY 14TH AS WELL AS THE 2:00 PM TRUMPET CLINIC/MASTER CLASS WITH PHIL SNEDECOR ON THE STAGE OF THE FORUM. TO APPLY FOR A SPOT AS A PRESENTER IN THE MASTER CLASS, PLEASE COMPLETE THE FORM ENCLOSED WITH THIS NEWSLETTER. YOU MAY ALSO FIND THE APPLICATION AT THE HSO WEBSITE UNDER THE EDUCATION TAB. www.HarrisburgSymphony.org

HSYO UPDATE

THE DRAGON IS COMING to the Mechanicsburg Middle School Sunday, April 10, 2011

The Harrisburg Symphony has not had a Family concert series for a number of years, but due to demand, the HSO is bringing great music to children and families once again, starting with The Little Dragon, A Tales & Scales Musictelling Adventure, on Sunday April 10, 2011 at 3:00 pm at the Mechanicsburg Area Middle School. Enjoyable for all, The Little Dragon is specifically designed for children in grades 1 – 5. The Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra musicians will play along with the Tales & Scales Musictellers for one memorable performance. As if the lure of a dragon and the musicians of the HSO were not enough, the HSO’s Education Committee has planned a wealth of outstanding pre-concert activities and festivities in the Mechanicsburg Area Middle School Atrium, starting at 2:00 pm on concert day. After all, The Little Dragon is a timeless tale of caring, courage, and the power of imagination. The Little Dragon is about a young girl named Elizabeth who loves stories. As she opens a book given to her by her favorite storyteller Monsieur La Flute, Elizabeth is swept into the magical world of the Little Dragon, who is being held captive in the royal palace and is taunted daily because he does not know how to breathe fire. But there are darker problems in the kingdom … The sun is becoming encrusted with ice, and everyone is cold! What will save them from freezing? Can anyone melt the ice around the sun? Elizabeth and the Little Dragon decide to take on the challenge, and their adventure is the rest and the best of the story! You and your family will have the opportunity to attend the first in a line of exciting family concerts with the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra. Join us at Mechanicsburg Area Middle School on Sunday, April 10th. Ticket prices are a very affordable $15.00 for adults and $10.00 for children under 12. The preconcert activities are included with the price of your concert ticket! Tickets for The Little Dragon are available at the HSO Box office, 717-545-5527 or on-line at www.harrisburgsymphony.org.

The Harrisburg Symphony Youth Orchestra has a new name, a new music director, and a new approach to orchestral teaching, practice, and performance. Tara Simoncic, our Music Director, has implemented some exciting features into the HSYO, including sectional coachings with professional musicians, most of whom are Harrisburg Symphony musicians. Recently, the HSYO played a very successful Holiday Spectacular concert at the Forum in Harrisburg. A fund raising Play-A-Thon at Strawberry Square brought in just over $9,000.00 for the HSYO’s continued growth and development. The Play-A-Thon featured some chamber ensembles of musician groups including a new Percussion Ensemble for the HSYO. The season is in full-swing. Look for audition information for the 2011-12 season earlier than past seasons. We plan to hold HSYO and Jr. String auditions much earlier in the late summer/early fall of 2011. Look for our posters coming later this spring!

THIS JUST IN…. 2011/12 YPC dates just announced. NEXT SEASON’S Young Person’s Concerts have just been announced. The fall YPC, designed for students in grades 3, 4, and 5 will take place on Friday, November 18, 2011 at 10:00 and 11:30 am. The spring YPC will take place April 13, 2012, also at 10:00 and 11:30 am. Details and sign-up forms will be included in the next School Sounds newsletter.

HOW DO WE GIVE OUR CHILDREN A SOUND FOUNDATION IN CLASSICAL MUSIC? The HSO has the answer for families who want to expose young people to the world of fine music. The Sound Foundation program is part of the HSO’s ongoing commitment to foster a love of live classical music in our community’s children and youth. The HSO is thrilled to offer extremely discounted Masterworks subscriptions to students who attend with a parent, grandparent, teacher or mentor to help foster an appreciation for live classical music. With a Sound Foundation Subscription, parents, grandparents, teachers or mentors can bring a child or youth to the HSO for only $27 for all 7 Masterworks performances! That’s less than $4 per concert! This $27 Sound Foundation Subscription price applies to all who subscribe to this - $27 for the child, $27 for the adult! The HSO’s new Welcome to the Concert program is designed to help demystify the Masterworks concert program for young concert-goers. The premise behind Welcome to the Concert is simple: if you know a little bit about the music and the musicians performing, you will be inclined to gain more enjoyment and meaning from the program. This program is for younger members of our audience to help them learn just how to approach a concert in the Forum. Welcome to the Concert attendees participate in activities, hands-on experiences, and even some concert-related snacks(!) for each of the seven Masterworks concerts in the 2010-11 season. If you’d like to know more about the Welcome to the Concert program, please call the HSO office or email aschwab@harrisburgsymphony.org
