t h e s to ry Replay is a creative program at The Skateboard School (TSS) in Denver, Colorado.

already there instead of letting it sit for a few thousand years?

The founders, mostly skateboard coaches and seasoned ex-hippies, saw a need for more constructive uses for old skateboards.

Furniture, shelving , clocks, jewelr y, artistic sculptures, lamps, shutters, and door handles are just a few examples of ways old skateboards & their parts can be used.

Over the years they saw that decks too worn to give to a rookie skater are usually either stuck away in some forgotten place, added to a trophy row of well-loved skateboards, or simply thrown out. They figured the planet is fragile enough as it is and doesn’t need more stuff in landfills, so why not do something with what’s

Plent y of companies out there sell furniture inspired by skateboard culture for wealthier enthusiasts, and most skate shops have at least one bench made out of old decks, but that’s not all Replay does. It’s not just about skateboards. It’s place where kids can come and feel

is often especially difficult to get them interested in a new idea of fun.

After all, decks aren’t the only cool things in dumpsters: tires, broken motors, baskets, egg cartons, fabric, and much, much more are all waiting to be repurposed. Even stuff that’s supposed to be sent to recycling pl ants can be reused in cool er ways.

Replay fills that void perfectly. It’s a place to get artistic energy out in a safe (but not too safe) environment without someone dict ating what to do or think, while still teaching kids how to think creatively when it comes to recycling instead of learning to throw ever ything away.

Kids are thrown so much negativit y in today’s culture and a lot of parents are tr ying to get their children involved in popular activities that are fun while still being a valuable, educational experience. A lot of times that’s hard to come by, and it

why re p l ay? So what’s a good name for a program that makes cool new stuff out of old skateboards? Here were some words of inspiration that identified what the company was all about: • • • • • • •

skateboarding recycling trash-to-treasure creativit y fun freedom building skills

These led to: • re-build • recycle • reuse • refurbish • ...and finally, replay. People hit the replay button for skate videos and awesome songs, so why not for trash? Instead of just the old play (use) and stop (throw out) options, there’s a new possibilit y. The life of the skateboard can now replay.

Trevor Silvey is a quiet, creative 13-year-old who is either out skating or tinkering in the garage on one of his several art projects. His favorites are the ones made entirely from stuff his

OCD mom threw out. Jack’s parents want him to continue pursuing his artistic t alent and suggested finding a way to integrate it into a more social setting to help him become more outgoing .

Marni Jones is involved in prett y much ever y afterschool activit y possible, including leading the “green is extreme” club; impressive for an 11-year-old. She’s learning how to skateboard

at TSS and wants to get into the culture more, but her dad

Jack Donaldson is a fearless 7-year-old always getting into trouble at school. While she loves his intense energy,

help steer him in the right direction. All he seems to be interested in these days however, is skateboarding , and she’s not sure how to get him interested in making art, not just destroying things.

Trevor ’s hippie-at-heart mom thinks getting him involved in a kind of art program might
