HISPANIC WORKING WOMEN: YOUR VOICE, YOUR VOTE, YOUR VALUE!

Letter from the President & CEO

Our goal for 2020 was to tell a complete story of service and we have achieved that goal. Whether it was virtual or live we're proud to have been able to hold all of our signature events in a safe and meaningful way. Dear friends and members, This Fall has been full of action at the HCC. With the help of our great staff, Board of Directors, and members, we have been able to successfully transition our events into COVID-19 safe settings for the safety of our members. The season kicked off with both Hispanic Working Women and our annual Adelante Awards broadcast virtually. The HCC STL Foundation’s 14th Annual Golf Classic hosted nearly 200 golfers at the Norman K. Probstein Golf Course for a beautiful day of play benefitting the HLI and HS HLI programs. Celebrations such as the Adelante Awards are more important than ever during these challenging times. They remind us how resilient, innovative, and successful our community is. Our members have achieved great things during a difficult year, and we are proud to be able to continue to provide our support. We have been fortunate to gain new board members during this time. In October, Claudio Abreu, Jomo Castro, Elias Corpas, Robert Clark and Suzanne Sierra were voted onto the HCC Board of Directors. Their dedication to the HCC STL mission is well known and we are excited to have them join us. Our goal for 2020 was to tell a complete story of service and we have achieved that goal. Whether it was virtual or live we're proud to have been able to hold all of our signature events in a safe and meaningful way. We will continue to support and celebrate our members in the coming year. Our dedication to our members and commitment to excellence means that we have continued to grow during this time, adding over 35 new members since August! These new members join over 375 other businesses in the area who are invested in the mission of the HCC. Together, we will continue to improve, enhance, and advocate for opportunities for the Hispanic community. Thank You!

HCC STL Foundation Holds its 14th Annual Golf Classic

The

On Wednesday, September 23rd, 2020, the HCC STL Foundation held its 14th Annual Golf Classic at Norman K. Probstein Golf Course in Forest Park. 165 golfers spent the day in sunshine for a socially distant day of fun, food, and festivities! Custom HCC STL Foundation face masks, courtesy of Bespoke Apparel, were handed out to all golfers, staff, and volunteers. During registration and throughout the day, guests had the opportunity to purchase digital raffle tickets for a chance to win exciting prizes.

A

fter registration, guests enjoyed boxed lunches from Havana’s Cuisine and Guido’s Pizzeria and Tapas food trucks. During lunch, guests were greeted with words of welcome from Karlos Ramirez of the HCC and Kelvin Taylor of Midwest BankCentre. Next, Alejandra Berra of Commerce Trust Company and Santiago Beltran of Builda-Bear Workshop each shared memories of their time in the HCC STL Foundation’s Hispanic Leadership Institute (HLI). Proceeds from the Golf Classic help to fund HLI and High School HLI, both of which develop leadership within the Hispanic community. After lunch, golfers made their way to their carts to find a goodie bag full of treats donated by the day’s Title Sponsor Midwest BankCentre, as well as other HCC member businesses, before the 1:00 pm shotgun start. The sunshine and 70-degree weather made for a beautiful day of play. After completing the course, golfers returned to the pavilion for a delicious dinner provided by the golf course. During dinner, guests who participated in the raffle were able to pick up their winnings from the prize table. While guests enjoyed their meals, Karlos announced the day’s winners, handed out prizes, and gave a toast of gratitude to all the participants. The HCC STL Foundation’s 14th Annual Golf Classic was made possible by our sponsors whose generous contributions allow us to pursue the HCC STL Foundation’s mission of strengthening Hispanic participation in the St. Louis business community through leadership development. “It’s been a great day, and we are thankful to have everyone together to support a great cause and congratulations to the day’s winners!” Karlos said as he celebrated the day. Your Voice, Your Vote, Your Value

On August 27th, 2020 over 180 attendees tuned in for a virtual broadcast of the HCC STL’s Hispanic Working Women event. This year’s theme was Your Voice, Your Vote, Your Value in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, which gave women in the United States the right to vote. Speakers and guests discussed the topic through a panel, Q&A session, and keynote presentation all centered on the topic of Your Voice, Your Vote, Your Value.

T

he evening began with a bang as a winner was drawn from among the attending members for the beautiful Dillard’s gift basket that had been donated for the event! After the winner had been chosen, guests were welcomed with warm words from the evening’s sponsor, Midwest BankCentre. Kathleen Spies of Midwest BankCentre spoke about the impact that Hispanic women can have both with their vote and with their finances. After hearing from Kathleen, guests were welcomed by the night’s moderator, Gabriela Ramirez-Arellano of the HCC. Gabriela explained that the panel would be followed by a Q&A session, which would then be followed by a presentation by the night’s Keynote Speaker, Marcela Manjarrez Hawn of Centene Corporation. After a quick explainer of the night’s format, Gabriela introduced the evening’s distinguished panelists: Elizabeth “SiSi” Beltran of Build-a-Bear Workshop, St. Louis City Treasurer Tishaura Jones, Dr. Julia Lopez of Washington University, and Adriana S. Ocampo of Boeing. The ladies shared their insights on topics such as voting, the #metoo movement, and how to emphasize the value that you bring to a situation. 8

After the panel and audience questions, the panelists gave the viewers these final pieces of parting advice: §   “Be courageous and believe in yourself,” Adriana S. Ocampo. § “Lead with empathy,” Dr. Julia Lopez. § “Be kind to yourself,” SiSi Beltran. § “Never apologize for making time for yourself,” Tishaura Jones. Following a brief intermission, Gabriela welcomed guests back for the night’s Keynote Presentation by Marcela ManjarraezHawn of Centene. Marcela is the Senior Vice President and Chief Communications Officer for Centene Corporation. She also manages the Centene Charitable Foundation, which makes substantial contributions to initiatives that improve the quality of life and health in our communities. Marcela spoke about how her experiences as a Hispanic woman shaped her career. Hispanic women, she said, have a shared cultural heritage which allows them to connect. “Given our shared values, I hope that the next few minutes will be more of a conversation than a speech. I will be a little personal, a little professional, and a little political,” she said.

She told the audience how she grew her voice through education at the University of Missouri at St. Louis. Although she was a standout student, there were still those who questioned her abilities. She realized that those questions had nothing to do with her talents but rather had to do more with the insecurities of those around her. She spoke next about her professional journey. She began the first phase of her career at The Federal Reserve and was balancing motherhood, a career and graduate school. Central banking, she explained, was a man’s world when she first began. One of the keys to her success, she said, was finding mentors to support her. Her mentors offered her advice, support and even book suggestions to help her navigate her multiple roles. Connecting with and learning from other female leaders helped Marcela grow as a leader herself. She also learned to ask for what she wanted. “I asked to attend conferences, I asked to travel internationally, to exchange best practices with counterparts or other central banks. I asked for additional roles and responsibilities and to my surprise, the answer was always yes,” she said as she recounted the importance of asking for what you want. She closed out her presentation with a call to action for Hispanic women to make their voices heard in American politics. She encouraged them not only to complete the 2020 Census, but also to register to vote and to ensure that their friends, family, and coworkers follow suit. “It is time to maximize our voices. Whether we speak with accents or not, our voice is one of our main assets,” she said as she stressed the political power of the growing Latino population in the United States. At the conclusion of Marcela’s moving presentation, the audience was given the opportunity to ask her their questions. Questions came rolling in as attendees eagerly submitted their questions.

I asked to attend conferences, I asked to travel internationally, to exchange best practices with counterparts or other central banks. I asked for additional roles and responsibilities and to my surprise, the answer was always yes After the Q&A session, attendees took the chance to connect more deeply with several of the panelists and the keynote speaker during a ladies’ only networking hour. Attendees shared book recommendations, discussed juggling career and familial expectations, and learned more about each other as they closed out the night. Hispanic Working Women: Your Voice, Your Vote, Your Value was made possible by support from our title sponsors at Midwest BankCentre. Reopening Talks with the HCC Completes a Successful Run

As news of the COVID-19 pandemic spread across the United States, we started to see first-hand the impact and challenges for our members. Gabriela Ramírez-Arellano, Business Counselor at the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Metropolitan St. Louis (HCC) and Alejandro Santiago, Membership Manager at the HCC, started reaching out and hearing from members about their struggles and concerts and began to brainstorm how to best provide insight, resources and support to all members of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

I

10

n the beginning, the specific needs were unclear. We didn’t know the impact the pandemic was going to have on the many different organizations and industries that we support. So, we decided to take swift action and started sending weekly emails that included the latest information. These weekly bilingual emails included information about webinars, new grant opportunities, family resources, inspiration, and many small business resources from across the county. As we progressed in our journey to provide helpful resources to our members, we saw a growing need for live conversations that shared not only expertise but also lessons learned. We decided to go live on our Facebook page and share thoughts, experiences, and lessons with each other. In a matter of days, Reopening Talks with the HCC came to life.

Through Reopening Talks with the HCC, we were able to hear the impact the pandemic was having in people’s daily lives and how they were being creative, resilient and innovative to soften the blow the pandemic had on us. From taking advantage of social media platforms, changing restaurant menus, adding a service or even seeing an increase in sales, we heard very different stories from all our members, but one commonality was always there; everyone had learned something that would change their business for years to come. As the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, we also learned from this initiative; to use the avenues that we have within reach, to connect and collaborate with others and to create a system in which ideas and experiences flow.

Our first video aired on May 18th, 2020, the same day as St. Louis City and St. Louis County officially lifted some of the restrictions that kept businesses closed for many weeks. It was our intention to provide guidance on the recovery of those businesses but also shed light into what many of us were doing, as not everyone was going through the same journey. And we did exactly that for more than 5 months.
