My family makes a LOT of garbage!
Dinner scraps My old toy The shoe I chewed up
Think of everything you threw away today...
Leftover lunch
But where does all this garbage go?
???
Workers pick the garbage up in a truck.
The truck takes the garbage to the landfill.
That sure is a lot of garbage!
Some of this garbage doesn’t have to be thrown away. It can be recycled.
Some products we use can be made into new things. This is recycling.
When you put bottles, jugs, cans and paper in a recycling bin or cart, a different truck picks it up and takes it to the recycling center.
When the truck gets to the recycling center, workers and machines separate the recyclables.
Next it goes to a factory where it gets made into something new.
Old metal can make new metal appliances.
Old papers make new paper.
Old plastic can make carpet.
Old glass makes new glass.
Since the new things are made from recyclables, we are saving natural resources.
Recycling also saves energy. It takes less energy to make new products from recycled products.
Composting is another way we can recycle. Composting is nature’s way of recycling.
You can save fruit and vegetable scraps, leaves, and grass to make a compost pile.
When you compost, insects, bacteria and fungi (FBI) break down the material.
COMPOST BIN
Your scraps turn into nutrients that can help flowers and vegetables to grow big and strong.
Some things can’t be recycled or composted, but they can still be reused.
The best way to help save energy, natural resources and put less in the landfill is to reduce how much we use. When we use less of something, we are reducing.
Recycling Song
Sung to "Row Row Row Your Boat"
Save, save, save the cans, throw them in the bin, We can help to save the earth if we all pitch in. Save, save, save the paper.... Save, save, save the bottles.... Save, save, save the plastics....
