Hui starts new charity fund Friday, June 24, 2016, 10:05 a.m. A hui of Mauna Kea observatories has started a new charity fund aimed at supporting scientific, cultural and environmental programs on Hawaii Island. The Maunakea Fund at Hawaii Community Foundation includes $100,000 in seed money that will initially help support 23 grant recipients in the foundation’s STEM Learning Partnership. They include Akamai Workforce Initiative internship program, Honokaa Schools Complex and Hawaii Space Grant Consortium. Organizers say the fund will expand in years to come to include programs focused on Native Hawaiian culture and environmental stewardship. “Science, culture and environment converge on Maunakea,” Mary Beth Laychack, CanadaFrance-Hawaii Telescope outreach program manager, said in a press release. “We believe it is our responsibility to help them all prosper together, for the benefit of our whole community.” For more information, visit www.hawaiicommunityfoundation.org/maunakea-fund.
