EDITOR’S NOTE

VIBRANCY IN LIFE The summer sun is invigorating. It energizes. It inspires. Its blazing heat propels one to just go and accomplish. It doesn’t matter whether it’s to travel, revisit an old hobby or just savor the surrounding and just be grateful. HCG feels the same warmth, the same drive. As the skies open up again to another fruitful year, HCG wants to do something different from the norm, shift a little and share how good life is! It’s a time to give back the same vigor and support it has received through the sailing years. As happy and grateful as the daylight, HCG introduces Home and Comfort Goodness, a collection of stories from appreciating architecture and interior design’s beauty to trying out a relaxing hang-out place and all the things in between that will let one see the beauty and comfort of living. In this maiden issue, HCG carved out a space for the recently concluded ArchiNEXT: HCG Young Designers’ Competition 2015. It’s a CSR program that celebrated the talents of young Filipino architecture students in the country. Alongside, Robinsons Land’s Tera Tower is also in ‘Limelight’ as one of the latest LEED buildings in the country. In every turn of the page, HCG has more things delightful to share with you. Welcome to the very first issue of Home and Comfort Goodness!

The Timeless facade of Tera Tower at Ortigas Center

TERA GOES FOR GREEN LATEST GEM OF ROBINSONS LAND

Green is in. And the latest to join the ranks of LEED certified buildings in the country is Robinsons Land’s Tera Tower. It is the first structure to rise in the upcoming development Bridgetown Business Park. Situated east of Ortigas Center along C-5 Road, Bridgetown is a master-planned high-end community that will feature office, commercial and residential spaces.

3 | home&comfortgoodness

“Everything is within reach at Tera Tower”

The 20-storey Tera Tower is set to be a commanding structure with its timeless façade and monochromatic building envelope. Elegant in its simplicity, the building exudes both corporate and professional feel. Tera Tower is also designed according to Feng Shui principles and features eight (8) vertical fins, which represent infinite progress. Tera Tower is ideal for demanding businesses like multi-national companies and BPOs with its 3.70m floor to floor height in all of its 15 office floors. Yet it seamlessly blends with the rest of the community with retail shops and wide al fresco dining areas on the ground floor and a bridge linking Tera Tower to nearby shops and restaurants. And amidst that, Tera Tower’s most impressive feature is its aim to be a sustainable building. Jason Corpus, LEED consultant for Tera Tower, explains that to be LEED certified a building must meet the triple bottom line: environmental, economical, and socially friendly. Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is the standard which every green building in the United States, where it started, is measured. Now the rest of the world follows suit. But Tera Tower didn’t just want to be simply signed off as LEED Certified. It wants to be LEED Gold Certified, which means, it targets to score higher than the baseline. continue to page 5

LIMELIGHT How is that possible? Here are the eight prerequisites to be LEED certified and Jason Corpus walks us through it:

WATER USE REDUCTION

ENERGY PERFORMANCE

Another goal is to use water wisely. In order to achieve that, the builders chose to install highefficiency toilets (HET) such as HCG’s where water consumption is at least 20% less than ordinary toilet without sacrificing performance.

The baseline is for the building to cut back its energy consumption by 10%. But with Tera going for the gold certification, it aims for more than 10% reduction.

FUNDAMENTAL REFRIGERANT MANAGEMENT

STORAGE AND COLLECTION OF RECYCLABLE MATERIALS

INDOOR AIR QUALITY

Refrigerants should be CFC (Chlorofluorocarbons) free. Green buildings boycott the use of it because CFC refrigerants have been known to cause the depletion of the Ozone layer.

During the building process, aside from keeping construction activity at the minimum, other waste should also be collected and if possible, recycled. Furthermore, future tenants shall also be provided with means for 3R: reduce, reuse, and recycle.

ENVIRONMENTAL TOBACCO OR SMOKE CONTROL

FUNDAMENTAL COMMISSIONING

CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITY POLLUTION PREVENTION Aiming for green starts at the construction level where pollution from construction activity should be contained and kept to a minimum within the project area. This means to not let water runoff or dust fly off. Whatever runs off should be filtered; while dust is controlled.

In connection with high indoor air quality, cigarette smoke is also banned inside Tera. Not only inside but within 25 ft from the building, any whiff of cigarette smoke is a no-no.

5 | home&comfortgoodness

Ultimately, to ensure that all the measures to be green are followed by heart, a third-party body does the verification. An unbiased view is essential in keeping the sustainable claim credible.

Have you ever been in a building where there’s nothing to inhale but air-conditioning? Tera Tower is different. With its design, it lets the building “breathe”. It means that fresh air can be freely enjoyed.

Tera Tower is designed to be a conducive and balanced workspace

The way to green should also be felt and seen by those who will use it. In this regard, Tera Tower also sports a green roof. Plants would be installed on the deck as well as planter boxes on the 6th floor. Technically, these would help store rainwater which will then be used for watering, essentially reducing the need for potable water. The roof decks would also be coated with Solar Reflective Index (SRI) paints. Additionally, these green roof would be a good refuge to recharge and rethink.

Going green – especially in this time of climate change – is beginning to be a crucial practice. But developers and even aspiring home owners are put off due to several factors. High upfront cost and too much effort are two of them. But as Jason Corpus points out, it’s not just the environment that wins when we go green. “Dapat nila isipin ang benefit and cost. (They should think about benefit and cost). The mark-up cost is higher but the operations cost would be lower.”

The building would also encourage its tenants to use Low-Emitting and Fuel Efficient Vehicles (LEFEV) or better yet, cycling to work with its bicycle racks and shower room provisions. More than promoting less carbon footprint, it upholds healthy lifestyle.

In the long run, everyone – both developers and tenants would benefit from being sustainable. Going green would mean energy efficiency, which translates to lower utility bills and a healthier, more conducive workspace for everyone.

SUMMER FRESH

A SUMMER-SUITABLE STYLE TO STEAL FOR YOUR BATHROOM AND LIVING ROOM The living room and bathroom may be the smallest and over-utilized rooms in your house, but it doesn’t mean it should be bereft of style! Take time to decide on a distinct style before construction or renovation. If you’re working with an existing living room or bathroom and can only afford minor tweaks, adding a few key pieces will do the trick. How does Country Style sound like? Refreshing, right? You cannot go wrong with this mom-approved style. Imagine summer in Provence or some romantic European countryside—or even our local probinsyas. Here’s how to pull of the Country Style look.

7 | home&comfortgoodness

STYLE

COLOR SCHEME Light-colored neutrals and pastels are your best bets. Blue also easily comes to mind when one thinks of Country Style. Choose two to four different shades of blue (Ideally one each of these: light, medium, dark) and balance it out with white. TEXTURE AND MATERIAL Go for functional accessories and dÊcor with wholesome, natural materials. Think burlap or canvas laundry bags, little wooden caddies in bleached or distressed wood, and woven abaca or raffia baskets. If you have the luxury of space, you can even include a small rustic side chair with throw pillow in a dry part of the bathroom. Veer away from glossy and lacquered finishes. MOTIF As for motif, go for pastel prints of flora and fauna. Have an anchor piece, say an inexpensive wall art. It could be a one striking piece or a group of small-framed art works or even photos you took yourself—perhaps Instagram shots of flowers? MOOD Adding some real fresh flowers and succulents and spritzing fresh-scented room spray will improve the ambiance. Other options are scented candles, potpourri, and dried flowers.

DEGUSTATION & DESIGN

PERUVIAN RHAPSODY

PARTLY COZY AND PARTLY PLAYFUL THIS DINING SPOT BOASTS HUNDRED PERCENT UNDERSTATED PERUVIAN CHARM. Not all people have a strong image of Peru that instantly comes to mind at the mere mention of the country. Don Andres, a restaurant in Quezon City solely dedicated to offering authentic Peruvian cuisine, can very well serve as a good introduction to this South American territory.

Chiam and Warner Lee.

Aside from offering superb savories such as arroz con mariscos and ceviche de pescado, the restaurant is equally remarkable for their interiors that exude the essence of Peru—from the soft furnishings in a range of vivid colors to the choice of background music—without ever coming off as too themed.

“We chose vibrant colors that depicted the colorful textiles Peru is known for. Another key items are strings hanging on our walls and ceiling. We wanted a modern twist but still showing how playful and homey our space could be.” The streamlined droplights in different shapes are also a good addition that reflect the restaurant’s Mod-playful vibe.

“The inspiration behind the restaurant’s design is mainly the vibrant colors and feel of Peru. Since we boast of our food’s authenticity, we also wanted customers to feel the vibe of Peru hence the Peruvian music we also play inside the restaurant,” says Jules Chan, one of the co-owners of Don Andres, along with Jordan

The owners worked with a designer in realizing a restaurant with a very homey feel and Peruvian punches here and there. Chan cites soft elements such as chair upholstery and even their servers’ aprons as their key items.

We’re already used to Spanish and Mexician cuisines, but most of us are practically clueless about Peruvian cuisine. In the mood for something new? Give Don Andres a try. Kick back, relax, and enjoy the food-and-ambience tripping to Peru.

HUE

One of the easiest ways to update the look of a bathroom, or any room at that, is to change the color palette. It can be as major as changing fixtures or repainting the walls, or as minor as incorporating pops of color by way of the small items or décor. Whether you’ll go all out or not, here are some palettes or color combinations to consider:

COLORS PERFECT FOR SUMMER PICK A PALETTE FOR YOUR HOME

3

1

1 CORAL PINK + PISTACHIO

GREEN

Let your room bloom with a gorgeous shade of pink partnered with pistachio green. Adjust the shades according to your liking. The rule of thumb is to have a stronger color. If you’re going for a really girly shade of coral pink, your shade of pistachio green shouldn’t be too light. You can also go for avocado green in this case. 2 TEAL + SUNNY YELLOW Ahh, the elements of summer: clear skies, sunflowers and shiny, shimmering beach! Contain that vision of a perfect summer in your room. But instead of using a light shade of blue, opt for something deeper and more sophisticated like teal or cerulean (remember “The Devil’s Wear Prada”?) to balance out the chirpy shade of yellow.

2

3 ROBIN’S EGG BLUE + LIPSTICK RED Red is hardly the first color that comes to mind at the mention of summer. Here you will just need spots of it to break the light shade of blue. If you can have a bit of wallpaper added, get a print with this kind of palette. This is an option for those who like a subtle summer color combo.

ARCHINEXT HCG YOUNG DESIGNERS’ COMPETITION 2015

HCG YOUNG DESIGNERS’ COMPETITION 2015

SHAPING YOUNG VISIONARIES INTO ICONS

A LEGACY OF ARCHINEXT The beginning of all things are small. Two decades ago, HCG started with barely a handful of employees. The dream of putting up a local manufacturing plant to serve and give employment to the community was still a blur. Yet as years went by, these goals were one by one achieved. Consequently, from an insignificant brand it rose to be one of the trusted bathroom fixtures providers in the country. As it enters its 20th anniversary, HCG wants to give back to the community. HCG believes in the talent of the youth, the fair hope of the nation, to conceptualize sound yet sustainable architectural masterpieces envisioned to spur inspiring trends. ArchiNEXT: HCG Young Designers’ Competition, in partnership with the United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) and Council of Deans and Heads of Architecture Schools in the Philippines (CODHASP), was created to tap the limitless creativity of these young students. Moreover, provide them a platform to showcase these ideas that have the potential in solving pressing problems of the country. In the Philippines, despite modernization, rural areas still lack decent facilities resulting in practice of open defecation. Not only that it causes diarrhea especially for children resulting in deaths but worse, it pollutes water systems. The first year’s challenge is a Sustainable Community Comfort Area (SCCA) for a neighborhood of

11 | home&comfortgoodness

fifty (50) families with an average of six (6) household members. Functional even when water supply and electricity is limited, the SCCA must not only provide a humane comfort room, but also boost the people’s self-worth no matter their social standing. A total of 110 students from all over the country submitted their vision of a sustainable community comfort area. These entries were trimmed down to 42 in a preliminary screening held last February. A week after, final judging was held at Luxent Hotel last March 2015 for another round of screening and scrutinizing. To ensure that only the best design concept exhibiting limitless creativity will be declared winner, the most adept judges screened the entries from Ar. Michael Tomeldan, uap, piep; Ar. Luis Ferrer, uap piep; Ar. Ted Inocencio, uap; Ar. Rey Gabitan, uap; Ar. Fidel Jose Siapno, fuap; Ar. Ma. Benita O. Regala, fuap, asean and Hocheng Philippines Corporation (HPC) President and industrial designer by profession Sam Chen. In the end, the concept of Laredo Angelo Paras, Jr. from Tarlac State University gained the respect and admiration of the judges. Aside from its aesthetic appeal, according to the judges, it is also well planned and executed. Laredo of his concept said, “My main concept is more on simple construction…I used bamboo which is readily available on site. The shape is simple as well, I patterned it in a leaf to give it more character.”

Second prize winner is Joanne Pauline Villanueva of Polytechnic University of the Philippines with a design that is practical and considerate of its built environment. Third prize winner is Gino Vincent Diongzon from University of the Assumption with an out-of-the box yet integrated design concept. Meanwhile, Christian Salvador Martinez, Jann Paolo Emmanuel D. Dela Cruz, Clarisse Estela S. Peralta, Riziel Dahren A. Soliveres, Klina S. Reyes, Marchie Teodoro Borja, Nerique Louis P. Taruc, Regie A. Rico, Marco F. Andriade, Chris Cyrill P. Reyes, Deo V. Balanay and Michelle R. Vergara were the runners-up of the competition. ArchiNEXT also gave scholarships to 10 deserving yet needy contestants provided they submit additional requirements together with their entry. The Scholars are Dorothy Joy Casbuse, John Paul Aloy, Marchie Teodoro Borja, Mc Jaspher Hernandez Aguila, Christian Joy T. Abril, Rafael M. Vicerra, Jerwin B. Andres, John Will Jay Dumot, Daniel C. Talion and Sultan Dave M. Puglay. Winners, runners-up and the scholars of ArchiNEXT were awarded during The UAP Awards Night of CONEX last April 17, 2015 at SMX Convetion Center where a thousand architects were in attendance. From making the dreams of the young trailblazers come true, HCG also hopes to bring their designs into reality; and in turn, positively affect the lives of many.

IN FOCUS

BEST SEAT IN THE HOUSE

WHAT MAKES UP A WORLD-CLASS BATHROOM FIXTURE? No other seat in your house – or just about anywhere – gives you more comfort and relief like the loo. But to be honest, have you given the least thought on what goes into making one? The answer most probably is no since you just sit down, do your business, get up and go. In reality, much goes into creating your beloved throne. The nice guys at HCG gives us a glimpse into the process. So what does it take to create your beloved throne? Here’s a simple walkthrough of the entire process. 1. MIXING AND MILLING Like most ceramic products, the toilet is made up of the slip and the glaze. The slip is the mixture that is poured into a mold while the glaze gives it a shiny finish that protects and makes the toilet hygenic. HCG’s slip is comprised of six to seven imported clays which is milled and mixed for six to seven hours. It is then let to sit for 14 days which later on is screened through a magnetic filter for iron deposits that could cause cracks when exposed to heat. 2. CASTING The mixture is then poured into a resin or plaster mold that was glued together by a substance called “gooey slip.” 3. DRYING The cast is left to air dry for five days and then another one under a machine called a fast dryer. The fast dryer continually blasts hot air unto the cast for an entire day until the last drop of moisture has dried out. Any moisture left in the cast could lead to fractures when the cast is finally placed inside the kiln. 4. INSPECTION Technically, it’s called a white body inspection since the cast – after being taken out of the fast dryer – appears to be white. It is then thoroughly checked for exactness of dimension, hidden cracks, and

13 | home&comfortgoodness

the like. It is also blasted with air to remove dust in preparation for glazing. 5. QR CODE PLACEMENT Workers place a special strip on the cast. This strip contains a QR code that records important information such as the date of casting, mold number, batch number, person who handled the cast, and so on, and allows the plant to respond quickly if errors surface at any part of the process.

2 1

3

4 6. GLAZING Three layers of an extensively tested glaze is then spread evenly all over the cast. The glazed cast is then placed on a conveyor belt which would take it to the kiln. 7. FIRING HCG’s kiln is 102-meter long and heats up from 500C to 1200C. Each batch of glazed casts goes through it for 16 to 18 hours depending on certain specifications. 8. PACKING Toilets that pass the quality test are boxed up, slapped with QR codes – this makes it easy for HCG to easily track each product, and then shipped out to stores and distributors.

Moreover, the company belives that healthy employees are efficient workers. “We care not only about making a good product, we also care for our employees,” says Eugene Lin, assistant vice president of HCG’s Supply Chain Division. HCG goes beyond providing the employees with one of the cleanest plants in South East Asia and safety equipment like dust masks, aprons, hair caps, back supports, and lifting assistance devices. In fact, they also provide them with food - fruits and vegetables grown in the lot beside the plant and with tilapia which is farmed in a fishpond that is connected to their water treatment plant. HCG also cares for the environment with their steps into reducing their emissions and recycling energy whenever they can. In fact, the energy they use to dry casts are actual emissions from their kiln. The entire plant is lit by efficient LED lights which makes it friendly to the the environment. With all these steps and processes, you’ll never look at your loo the same way again. Bow down before the throne of your home, at least. home&comfortgoodness
