Just because the Holidays are here doesn’t mean litter doesn’t appear. The members of the Masonic Lodge performed their civic duty of picking up trash along the highways and byways of Real County. At least four times per year the group gets together and helps to keep our community clean. Leakey Masons and wives picked up 31 bags of trash north of Leakey a few weeks

ago during the Thanksgiving season. What better way to say “Thank You” than to help keep the community beautiful. “Our Values are to reflect civility towards our fraternal brothers and others in our daily lives by adhering to the basic principals of our fraternity; Brotherly Love, Relief and Truth. This past Monday evening the Sabinal Beginning, Junior High, and High School Bands brought music for the season. Jingle Bells, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, and Feliz Navidad began the program. The bands took turns playing their selected pieces. For the grand finale, the High School Band played a number of pieces and provided sound effects while David Sprott read “The Night Before Christmas” intermittently. A lot of good memories were brought back to parents and grandparents and the students had a really gave a good performance. All I can add to that is “Merry Christmas”.

Jazz Spectacular

Well worth the trip, the Uvalde Jazz Band, with special guest performers Tom Bethke, Wally Minko, and David Zarlenga of Los Angeles; Dennis Dotson of Houston; Dr. Russell Haight of Austin; Deena Russo originally of New York; Karlos Elizondo, Gil Garza, Jim Kalson of San Antonio area, and Uvalde ISD teachers Jason Jung, Darren, and Karen McCarty put on a fabulous show at the John Harrell Auditorium. The Uvalde Jazz band students, swaying to the music, were having a lot of fun being able to play with professionals. Young Uvalde student Aidan Suarez, age 11, performed a special on one song. The Varsity Choir joined with their voices in the last section. It was two hours of pleasure for any and all jazz enthusiasts.

Community Choir

On Sunday evening at 7 p.m. the First Baptist Church hosted a special production with community members from several of the churches in town. Titled “Peace Has Come” it was directed by Steven Henry. Soloists were Ben Jacklin and Stephen Henry. Henry was accompanied by Glenda Story. Narrator was Pastor Jim Fox of Central Christian Church. Even the audience joined in with familiar hymns. A light meal was served following the presentation.

Christmas Party

When I learned that Toni Hull, a Uvalde de las Encinas Chapter NDAR member, had suffered a heart attack on Thursday, November 30, I sprang into action. Traditionally, we were to meet at her

home for our annual Christmas party and there was no way that could happen. I decided not to say, “Bah, Humbug!” I changed the meeting place to my home and got busy. This past Saturday, a small sign “D A R” was placed in the corner of my yard to help our members located my home and they came. We had plenty to eat, plenty of visiting, and then I challenged them to my “Game of Sabinal.” For non Sabinal-ians, they did pretty well. And they learned a little bit about the second largest city in Uvalde County.

Central Christian

The Wednesday Night Bible Study will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the Annex. The study on Book of 1 Peter is led by Pastor Jim Fox. The study will resume in January.

Emmanuel Lutheran

The members are in agreement to postpone the Women’s Christmas luncheon set for today and movie night on Saturday, December 15. When the fellowship hall is restored and new flooring complete, the plan is to have a big celebration for everyone to enjoy. Good plan. Upcoming events, Christmas Eve Candlelight service is set for Monday, December 24, at 6:40 p.m. and the choir cantata will be presented Sunday, December 30. A good sign of growth is the Children’s Sunday School which is set to start in 2019.

First United Methodist

Special music this past Sunday was provided by Elizabeth Hodges, Cheryl Hunter, Susan Marshall, Rhonda Marquardt, and Suzanne Mayne. A light meal followed the service. Tomorrow evening at 7 p.m. the Uvalde

Chancel Choir of First United Methodist will bring their Christmas selections and perform. They are under the direction of Susan Gerish. It is a free performance. Soup and sandwiches will follow the presentation. Movie night is at 6:30 p.m. this Friday. “The Star” is the selection and the event is free to the public with snacks included. Children under 11 need to be accompanied by an adult. Children always steal the show and on Sunday, December 16, they will do it again. The children will put on a Christmas Pageant at 6 p.m. Hot chocolate and cookies follow the production. There will be two Christmas Eve services. On Monday, December 24 at 6 p.m.,Miss Sharon Counselman will provide the music. The children will bring the message and communion will be shared. At 8 p.m, Elizabeth Hodges will provide the music. The service and communion will be at that service. Equipping the Saints will be held on January 26, 2019, at First United Methodist in Kerrville.

on in to the second quarter. With shots by Taylor, Childs, and Melody Calderon the Panthers closed out the first half 268. In the third quarter the Panthers were pulled out of the press to work on more technical and fundamental defensive skills with the younger players of the team. The Panthers maintained focus and aggression

NCHS Girls Basketball The weekend of December 8th was a busy one for N.C. Basketball, as the Prowling Panthers competed in a large 16-team tournament down South in Tilden. The Panthers fell short in their late first-round action on Thursday. They lost to the larger Freer Lady Bucks. N.C. led for three quarters, but they could not convert on the interior. The Panthers only managed 10 second-half points, while Freer sunk 18 fourth-quarter points. Shelby Pannell was the only Panther in double figures, and notched a double-double with 10 points and 14 boards. N.C. went to the loser side of the bracket falling short 32-44. Next up was Charlotte. It had been two years since the Canyon had played the Lady Trojans, and they had improved. They hustled on defense and seemed, really, more game-ready than the Panthers. And so the first quarter followed suit with Charlotte leading the Panthers for the first time in a long time at the end of one. Finally, N.C. shook the cobwebs off, and began to play a bit. They still had trouble scoring, as no Panther was in double figures. Senior guard, Mandie Carabajal (who had a good overall tournament) led the way for N.C. with 9 points and 3 steals. N.C.’s bench did produce well on this night with Helen Perez and Cadence Balderas each scoring 8 points. Posts, Grace Luce

NCJH Girls Basketball vs. Medina Last Thursday the JH Lady Panthers faced off against the Medina Bobcats. Right from the start the Panthers came out with intensity. Aggressive defense and fast break layups by Camdyn Childs and Kylie Taylor, a 3 pointer and an outside shot from Ailani Sanchez put the Panthers in a 15-4 lead at the end of the first quarter and continued

holding the Bobcats to a 34-10 lead. This momentum carried through the fourth quarter with buckets were scored by Evelyn Ibarra and Rachelle Gonzales. A stall tactic in the last couple of minutes of the game proved to be a little bit of a challenge but in the end was successful enough giving the Panthers the victory 40-15.

and Pannell, did grab rebounds against their shorter opponents. They totaled 19 together. N.C. pulled off the game with a 20-point lead 47-27. This advanced them to a pivotal round against a tough little 3-A private school out of San Antonio, Castle Hills. N.C. seemed more ready to play for this 8:30 AM game than they were the night before. They grabbed the lead and even extended it to a 11-point lead by half by breaking the press and getting the easy two. However, the Panthers turned cold in the third quarter as their fans have woefully seen them do. They put up a measly 2 points for the third. They now trailed by 3 points. Grace Luce helped her team regain the lead with trips to the foul line in the fourth. She was 5 for 6 from the charity stripe, took a charge, and showed the best overall scoring for the Canyon with 13. The game was all tied up at 42 with 7 seconds on the clock. N.C. barely got the ball down the court, only to have Castle Hills knock it out of bounds. The ball was spotted low on the sideline with 3 seconds now remaining. N.C. got the ball in the corner to Aylin Ibarra who passed up the shot to Leslie Taylor. She heaved up the last-ditch effort, and was fouled on the three-point attempt with basically no time remaining. Taylor collected herself after a timeout and calmly

knocked down 2 of the 3 to ice the game and send the Panthers into the consolation round. After the dramatic finish, N.C. took their chance at the trophy against Kennedy. They grabbed the early lead off the coattails of guard, Leslie Taylor, and post, Shelby Pannell, who now seemed to take the lid off the free throw baskets, hopefully, for good. Taylor went 7 for 9 at the charity stripe, while Pannell shot 5 for 8. This helped N.C. shoot 64% as a team. The Panthers also did a good job of withstanding Kennedy’s physical play. Luce again took another hard charge for the team to fire up the defense. N.C. extended their lead to another 20-point victory of 43-23 and got the consolation prize. Taylor led all scoring with 18 points, 7 steals, and 3 assists, and was selected to the All-Tournament Team. Shelby Pannell also had an All-Tourney performance for the three days, and ended her last game with yet another double-double of 11 points and 14 rebounds. Now, the Panthers must quickly turn their attention to the meat and potatoes of their season when they host Knippa on Tuesday for the first District contest.

Have you ever experienced times when you were excited and filled with anticipation but after it was over the expectation did not live up to the hype? It’s nothing to worry about because we all have our share of disappointments every now as this is just a normal part of life. Sometimes we even become sad and restless when life is going good which may seem strange but we were never intended to live only by our emotions. When it comes to our spiritual life, the Bible says the joy of the Lord is our strength. This is an internal confidence and peace we can enjoy no matter what we are going through. However, our joy has a tendency to leak out and needs to be re-filled constantly which also explains how easily we can fall away from God and become cold and irritable. If we feel like a grinch and looking for someone to blame, we can always point to the many daily distractions we encounter. Focusing too much attention on the things of earth while ignoring God is a sure way to become discouraged. Christians are spiritually connected to their creator and have undergone a miraculous transformation, but this does not mean they are always walking with Him or even aware of his presence. In the old life we were led by

our feelings without any respect or concern with God, His Word, or His people. But when a person surrenders their life to God, the idea is for everything to change including laying down their independence and embracing a lifestyle of trusting and obeying God’s voice. This new identity includes following his decisions and letting go of the things of earth that desire to capture our thoughts and devotion. When any of us fail to have our priorities in the right place we automatically become detached from our joyful excitement and this explains why many are miserable. No matter how wealthy or healthy we are, this temporal realm is hardly a continuous mountain top experience. Actually, our existence here on earth was never intended to be a perfect paradise because heaven is an eternal dwelling place reserved for God, his angels and his people. It may not be popular, but we will all have our share of valleys in this life as they are meant to teach us valuable lessons. By the way, the fear and darkness of the valley does not matter as long as we are holding tightly to his hand. The good news is these sad and difficult places were only designed to be temporary situations. God wants us to learn how to be an overcomer by

allowing him to open our eyes and ears so that we can know what he wants us to do. Since we all have free-will, we have the choice to do whatever we set our mind to and even Christians can make terrible decisions if this is what they really want. Jesus has always realized how easy it is for humans to wander away from him as he tells the story in Matthew chapter 18 about the sheep that becomes separated from the flock. Christ represents the shepherd and says the good shepherd leaves the ninety-nine to go search for the one that is missing. How often do we consider that God loves us so much that he is constantly trying to rescue the ones who have lost their way? How easy it is for any of us to become untied from the harbor like a small sailing vessel that is pulled by the strong currents out into the open sea. This reminds me of the old hymn that warns, “You’re drifting too far from the shore.” Many times when we are busy with shopping and entertaining we can fail to recognize why we feel a sense of emptiness and loneliness. Even when we are surrounded by family

and friends and everything seems fine on the outside, we can experience a loss of peace and contentment on the inside as if something deepdown in our soul is missing. This “something” is our personal relationship with God that we have neglected. As we approach one of the most hectic and stressful times of the year, let us take some quiet time to ourself and think about what is truly important. Jesus said in Matthew 11: 28, “Come unto me all of you that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Read more at billyhollandministries.com

AN OLD-FASHIONED CHRISTMAS If you’re weary of the push and shove… the crowds and the money, money, money... Step back to a simpler time. There was no shop till you drop! Maxed out credit cards and worrying about the quality of the gifts… the materialism instead of home and family. The holidays are a time we can actually slow down and appreciate the time we have to spend with family. So, this week’s article is not just about Christmas. It’s a wake-up call on how to focus on the important things in your life. Here’s how to enjoy the season more like our Maw-Maw’s and Paw-Paw’s did! Bake from scratch- I remember walking into my grandmother’s house and the house would be filled with the scent of baking cookies and a simmering pot of chicken and dumplings. The fading scent of the mincemeat and pumpkin pies baking, lingering with those aromas. That was Christmas to the eager delight of my 6-yearold self! It meant Santa was coming and my family would gather, and I remained excited and expectant through the weeks. So, realize first… nothing must be perfect. I didn’t even like mincemeat pie, but I knew the smell of it bought Christmas. Homemade Gifts- Homemade goodies such as cookies, candies, breads, and pies are always welcome, but you can make plenty of other easy gifts. Layer your favorite cookie recipe ingredients in a jar of some kind, and attach baking instructions. Package homemade seasoning chili or taco mixes, or make your own vanilla extract. Download a free inspirational quote and frame it. Put together a themed gift basket such as slumber party or date night, or even girl’s night out! Last year I bought pretty decorator boxes for $1.00 each and made stationary and gave “Write to Maw-Maw” Boxes to my grandchildren. They were a big hit and I get letters from them all the time for an entire year now. That of course, is my favorite part. Slow Down- Choose to stop the hustle and bustle! Make memories. Sit by the fire with your children or grandchildren and listen to them talk. Talk to them. Spend time in their world… and let them spend time in yours. Give them memories

they will take with them into adult hood. The investment will reap rewards far beyond what you will see in your life time. Our children remember… Cards, Photos, Newsletters- I actually love the idea of the newsletters some are doing now to replace the cards we used to send. Giving someone an overview in pictures and events of the last year of your family’s life is an excellent way to keep the “connections” that are becoming unraveled in our fastpaced modern society. Whatever you send… send them! Let people you don’t often see know that you have thought of them and care about them! Send a letter, to let them know you have thought about them and that they matter to you. Christmas is about love. Dress up- “When you look at old photos of our parents and grandparents, you see that everyone is dressed nicely at big holiday gatherings…” I took that quote from Post. We all want to be comfy in our PJs on Christmas morning. We don’t get dressed up anymore, and again, we are making memories and traditions our children will carry into the future. So, dress up, feel beautiful. Give your kids a special day to dress up and feel special and let your kids feel beautiful too! Say Thank you- My Maw-Maw told us manners matter. So, remember those who have remembered you. Again, it is about thoughtfulness. Say thank you, in a note or card or just in person. Send a little something to let them know you appreciate that they took the time to think of you. Whatever, you do this Christmas, remember that there are a finite number of Christmas mornings that your children will wake excited and happy, eyes all aglow, running to the Christmas tree to find out what Santa brought. Tearing into the gifts with that loving, happy exuberance. Remember this season is all about love and remembrance and tradition. Giving of yourself is the most precious gift you can give! Much love from the Hill Country Herald and wishing you the Merriest Christmas Holiday of all!

LEAKEY FESTIVITY OF LIGHTS The Leakey Festivity of Lights committee included Penny Maguire, Lana Carr, Vickie Crispin, Shawn Gray, Beatsie Rubio, Art Maguire, and Patti Berkstresser. The group’s mission was more than accomplished, as over 200 members of our community and visitors were present to help us demonstrate our community pride through public celebration of the Christmas season. The evening began with words of gratitude from Lana Carr, followed by a prayer delivered by a local minister. After the grounds were illuminated, a truly awe-inspiring moment, the crowd was entertained by Christiana and Gary Horn. The Leakey Festivity of Lights will be an annual event, and

the committee will work hard to replicate the beauty of this year’s celebration in future years. Many ideas for adding to the festivity of the evening are being discussed. It’s not too late to make your year-end donation to the LEAKEY FESTIVITY OF LIGHTS, which has a non-profit partnership with Downtown Leakey, Inc., a local 501(c)3 organization. Your donation is tax deductible to the extent allowed by law. Checks to the Leakey Festivity of Lights can be mailed to P.O. Box 402, Leakey, Texas 78873. Hurd Secures $50M in Grant Funding for West Texas Infrastructure Improvements ‘It is imperative that West Texans have access to safe, reliable highways’ The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT)’s Texas Energy Sector Rural Improvement Program received $50 million through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s BUILD grant program to improve roads impacted by the Permian Basin energy boom in Winkler, Reagan and Glasscock Counties. U.S. Representative Will Hurd (TX-23), was instrumental in securing the funds by penning a bipartisan letter of support signed by 21 members of Congress to U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao and by advocating for the projects separately to Deputy Assistant Secretary Sean McMaster. “The Permian Basin energy sector employs 444,000 people, fuels ten percent of our state’s economy and

produces thirty percent of our nation’s oil and gas. With production in the Permian projected to double in the next five years, it is imperative that West Texans have access to safe, reliable highways to accommodate increasing traffic,” said Hurd, who represents Winkler and Reagan counties where grant funding will be allocated. “These funds will allow TxDOT to connect the needs of local residents with state and national planning efforts, so that hardworking West Texans can continue to power our economy safely. I was proud to advocate on behalf of my constituents for these muchneeded infrastructure improvements, and I will continue to deliver real results for South and West Texans.” The BUILD grant funding will be

allocated as follows: • $25 million for the Winkler County Improvement Project, which will include a grade-separation overpass construction at SH 302, which has seen a nearly 400% increase in Northbound traffic and a 300% increase in Southbound Traffic, and SH 115, which has seen traffic increases of 175% in both directions; and, • $25 million for the Glasscock and Reagan County Improvement Projects, a group of projects including a grade-separation overpass construction and strategic widening of SH 137 to add turning lanes at critical intersections, strengthened pavement structure and future fiber installation along the corridor.

Pecos High School Students Win 2018 TX-23 Congressional App Challenge West Texas students create app to stay safe on the road U.S. Representative Will Hurd (TX23) named Katia Jimenez, Joshua Price and Daniel Paris of Pecos High School the winners of this year’s TX23 Congressional App Challenge, a competition aimed at encouraging high school students to code by creating their own digital applications. After their friend lost his life in a car accident, the Pecos High School students created an application called “Drive Safe,” to provide a convenient way for drivers to contact emergency services and loved ones without having to reach for their phone after an accident.

“In today’s interconnected world, the future of our nation’s economy and security depends on having enough creative problem solvers to tackle tomorrow’s problems,” said Hurd, a computer science major and cybersecurity entrepreneur. “I am proud of the hard work put in by Katia, Joshua and Daniel to learn coding concepts and create an app that not only pays tribute to their friend but also can potentially save lives. I also applaud the work of all the South and West Texas students who participated in this year’s challenge, and I will continue to champion initiatives

that encourage all of our students to learn computer science.” “For the US to stay globally competitive, we, as teachers, must train our students to become innovative problem solvers. We must make it our duty to show them what’s possible and give them opportunities to learn the technology that will get them there,” said Jerald Jolito, Pecos High School Science and Robotics Teacher. The Congressional App Challenge Winners receive $250 in Amazon Web Services promotional credits and a travel voucher courtesy of Southwest Airlines.

Use a 2-or 4-inch candy-cane-shape cookie cutter to cut dough. Place cutouts 1 inch apart on an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake for 7 to 8 minutes or until edges are firm and bottoms are very lightly browned. Transfer to a wire rack and let cool. If desired, tint part of the Powdered Sugar Icing and/or Creamy White Frosting bright red with food coloring; decorate cookies with white and red icing and/or frosting, sanding sugar, and candies. Makes 6 to 7 dozen, 2-inch or 4 dozen, 4-inch cookies. Place undecorated cookies in an airtight container; cover. Store at room temperature for up to 3 days, or place in a freezer container and store for up to 3 months. Thaw frozen cookies before decorating. Or, allow decorated cookies to stand until completely set. Layer decorated cookies between sheets of waxed paper in an airtight container. Store in refrigerator up to 3 days or freeze up to 3 months.

Yummy Candied Caramels

You can take regular caramel squares that you buy in the store and then use sprinkles, chocolate, nuts and other ingredients to give them a homemade touch. Just use lollipop sticks and dip them in chocolate or white chocolate and add the decorations that you want. They are easy to make and oh-so-yummy and are the perfect gift giving candy -orCandy-Box Caramels-These Christmas candies can be made quickly in the microwave. For gift giving and added variety, roll caramels in festive nonpareils or nuts after you dip them in melted candy coating. 12 ounces chocolate- and/or vanilla-flavor candy coating, coarsely chopped 1 cup toffee pieces, crushed; finely chopped pistachios; and/or nonpareils 48 short plastic or wooden skewers (optional) 1 14 ounce package vanilla caramels (about 48), unwrapped 2 ounces chocolate- and/or vanilla-flavor candy coating*, coarsely chopped (optional) In a microwave-safe 4-cup measure, place the 12 ounces candy coating. Microwave on 100% power (high) for 3 minutes or just until melted, stirring every 30 seconds. Place toffee pieces, nuts, or nonpareils in a shallow dish. If desired, insert a skewer into each caramel. Dip one caramel into melted candy coating; turn to coat as much of the caramel as desired, allowing excess coating to drip off caramel. (If not using skewers, use a fork to lift caramel out of candy coating, drawing the fork across the rim of the glass measure to remove excess coating from caramel.) Place dipped caramel in toffee pieces, nuts, and/or nonpareils, turning to coat. Place coated caramel on a baking sheet lined with parchment or waxed paper. Repeat with remaining caramels. Let caramels stand about 1 hour or until coating dries. If desired, microwave 2 ounces of a contrasting color of candy coating in a microwave-safe bowl on 100% power (high) for 2 minutes or just until melted, stirring every 30 seconds. Cool slightly. Transfer coating to a small, heavy plastic bag; cut a small hole in one corner of bag and drizzle additional coating over coated caramels. Let caramels stand until set. Makes 48 pieces. Layer caramels between waxed paper in an airtight container; cover. Store at room temperature for up to 1 week or freeze for up to 3 months. *If desired, substitute milk chocolate, dark chocolate, and/or white chocolate baking squares with cocoa butter for candy coating.

Candy Cane Marshmallow Pops

Candy canes, marshmallows, chocolate and nuts – nothing says Christmas more than this! These little pops are so easy to make. You just dip a marshmallow in melted chocolate, roll it in nuts, sprinkles, coconut or whatever you want and then just stick the candy cane into the marshmallow for a stick. They would be cute sticking off the side of a cup with hot chocolate mix inside. 1 child to crush candy canes (optional, but fun) large marshmallows mini candy canes melted chocolate crushed candy canes Stick a mini candy cane into the large marshmallow. Dip the marshmallow into the melted chocolate, allow excess chocolate to drip off, then roll into the crushed candy cane. Place on a waxed paper lined baking sheet and allow to set.

NEWS- THIS WEEK WE ARE GOING TO TAKE THE LIBERTY OF REPORTING WHAT IS GOOD IN THE WORLD. MERRY CHRISTMAS! DELAWARE-For the last 40 years, Ron Elliott has been using a special pickup truck to transport the bodies of dead Vietnam veterans to their final resting places free of charge – so when his faithful automobile finally started to break down, the community stepped up to help. Community firefighters and veterans raised money to buy Elliott a lightly-used 2013 Ford truck that will soon be outfitted with modifications for carrying the veterans’ caskets and repainted to feature the names of the deceased veterans. The truck was presented to Elliott earlier this week with the help of Mitchel Gauge, a retired Air Force veteran who led the fundraising effort. Elliott, who is a Vietnam veteran himself, had been driving the same 2000 Ford F150 for about two decades. It was the second vehicle that he had used for his labor of love, and it had racked up roughly 150,000 miles before it started to die. The side of the truck was emblazoned with the names of Vietnam veterans from Delaware who lost their lives in combat. Elliott has been using the trucks to transport the remains of his brothers in arms since the 1960s. Though he is based out of New Castle County, Delaware, he says that he has offered his free services to veterans and their families in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, Washington D.C., and even Kentucky. ABANDONED COAL MINES RECYCLED-With the ever-declining demand for coal around the world, there are over 150,000 coal mine shafts that are abandoned– but they might soon be given new life in the form of ultra-efficient indoor farms. Though it might seem counterintuitive, coal mines are actually an “almost perfect” environment for farming. These underground tunnels naturally maintain consistent temperatures, and they are unaffected by weather changes, seasons, or the unexpected symptoms of climate change. Furthermore, vertical indoor farms use up to 95% less water than regular land farming and no pesticides. In a former air-raid tunnel in London, scientists Richard Ballard and Steven Dring are testing their plans for future underground farms, and they are already seeing immense potential in their work. The repurposed World War Two bunker is currently providing healthy vegetables to supermarkets of the Clapham Common neighborhood, all while avoiding the dynamic – and sometimes harmful – weather conditions that most farms encounter on the surface. LUXEMBOURG- Will soon become the first country in the world to offer free public transportation to everyone. (Luxembourg is a small European country, surrounded by Belgium, France and Germany.) The European nation suffers from some of the worst traffic congestion in the world—and scores the highest cars-per-capita rate in the European Union. Though its population is small, some 560,000 residents, the number of international commuters from France and Belgium has nearly doubled what it was two decades ago. According to the New York Times, the 180,000 commuters are attracted to Luxembourg by jobs that offer substantially higher annual salaries than those in neighboring nations. Previously, trams, buses, and trains have offered free fare to children, students, and senior citizens, but starting in 2020, public transit will be free for all. Prime Minister Xavier Bettel, who was just sworn in for his second term earlier this week, hopes that the initiative will benefit the environment by cutting down on greenhouse gas emissions while simultaneously freeing drivers from such infuriating traffic jams. CHRISTMAS FOR VETS-Between studying for tests and finishing some lastminute projects, these fifth-grade students are sending 600 donated Christmas trees to service members who will be on duty around the world for the holiday season. The sweet Yuletide initiative at Bethlehem Elementary School in New Hampshire is their contribution to the Trees for Troops program, currently in its 14th year of operation. For the troops receiving the trees, the gift of Christmas cheer makes a

HOMELESS MAN FINDS $17,000.00 CASH-When a homeless man stopped by his local food bank for a meal early one August morning, he found a lot more than just food outside their door. Kevin Booth had originally planned to grab some of the free baked goods that are left outside of the Sumner Food Bank for people to take when the facility is closed at night. Instead, he saw a peculiar brown paper bag Not certified by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization sitting outside the locked front door. Thinking that it held food, Booth opened the bag only to see that it contained stacks of $20 bills. The bag was collectively filled with $17,000 in cash. Needless to say, that money would have made a great difference to Booth, and there was no one around to know that he had taken it. But the 32-year-old says that he knew that the money would serve more people at the food bank, so he waited until volunteer Anita Miller arrived to open up the facility. “There are a lot of people who would have taken it,” Booth told the News txtree@ktc.com Tribune. “I’m just not that person.” She was shocked Licensed and Insured for to hear about what had been Your Protection left outside their door, and she immediately called the police. Though the Sumner Police Department of Washington reviewed their security footage, they were not able to identify who dropped off the package.
