HCH Genetics
Editorial HCH Genetics have had a very busy year on many fronts. Our embryo flush centre has now been accredited to enable us to harvest export embryos, including the EU. Embryos destined for Canada, the US and New Zealand have been produced, with more on the way. Results from the centre have been pleasing with high percentages of A grade embryos. We are particularly selective with embryos produced to ensure pregnancy rates remain high. Our final ‘stick’ rates have been excellent and are consistently above industry average. HCH Genetics continues to select globally elite sires for our customers, this year we are offering some outstanding new Angus bulls; 8 new bulls in total. It is worth noting the success Compass has had over the last couple of years. Brought into Australia by HCH Genetics as the pick of his flush brothers, the bull has gone from strength to strength and shows the importance of fully researching potential AI sires rather than simply looking at their numbers. Having said that, not only is Compass phoenotypically outstanding with a strong, sound pedigree, his EBVs demonstrate this, with a massive 12 traits sitting within the top 7% of the breed. The bull line up presented in this catalogue, demonstrates some of our recent work into a wider variety of breeds with a larger selection of Charolais sires, the inclusion of Wagyu, Speckle Park, Limousin and Salers and a new exciting Hereford sire. HCH Genetics will be venturing overseas again in 2019 to inspect new up and coming sires. Give us a call if there are any genetic lines of interest you would like inspected. Please feel free to contact our staff with any questions. highcountryheifers@bigpond.com www.hchgenetics.com www.breednfeedbeef.com
Please note that all EPD, EBV and genomic numbers were correct at the time of editing this catalogue. For the most up to date figures it is advisable to research the animal on the specific breed society web site.

Explanation of American EPDs
It is often very difficult to compare cattle ‘numbers’ on a global scale, which is frustrating considering the frequency with which genetics are swapped between countries. We recommend to look at where the animal is ranked within a population. Therefore, if you are looking for a calving ease sire, if the animal is ranked within the top 10% of the breed you are good to go. To assist with sire selection, on HCH Genetics’ web site, we put all our sires on one table based on the % ranking within the breed for that trait. To assist you in reading the American EPDs in his catalogue, we have included the trait explanations as they appear on the American Angus Association’s web site (some abbreviations). EPD: Expected Progeny Difference is the prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform relative to the progeny of other animals listed in the database. Production EPDs CED: Calving Ease Direct is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. BW: Birth Weight is expressed in pounds and is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires. WW: Weaning Weight is expressed in pounds and is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. On our web site we compare this to the 200 day weight of Australian EBVs. YW: Yearling Weight is expressed in pounds and is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. On our web site we compare this to the 400 day weight of Australian EBVs. RADG: Residual Average Daily Gain, expressed in pounds per day, is a predictor of a sire’s genetic ability for postweaning gain in future progeny compared to that of other sires, given a constant amount of feed consumed. DMI: Dry Matter Intake, expressed in pounds per day, is a predictor of difference transmitting ability for feed intake during the postweaning phase, compared to that of other sires. YH: Yearling Height, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling height, expressed in inches, compared to that of other sires. SC: Scrotal Circumference is expressed in centimeters, is a predictor of the difference in transmitting ability for scrotal size compared to that of other sires. Doc: Docility is expressed as a difference in yearling cattle temperament, with a higher value indicating more favorable docility. Maternal EPDs HP: Heifer Pregnancy is a selection tool to increase the chance of a sire’s daughters becoming pregnant as first-
20
calf heifers during a normal breeding season. CEM: Calving Ease Maternal is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf daughters. It predicts the average ease with which a sire’s daughters will calve as first-calf heifers when compared to daughters of other sires. Milk: Maternal Milk is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters. MW: Mature Weight is expressed in pounds and is a predictor of the difference in mature weight of daughters. MH: Mature Height is expressed in inches and is a predictor of the difference in mature height of a sire’s daughters. $EN: Cow Energy Value si expressed in dollar savings per cow per year, and assesses differences in cow energy requirements as an expected dollar savings difference in daughters of sires. Carcass EPDs CW: Carcass Weight is expressed in pounds and is a predictor of the differences in hot carcass weight of a sire’s progeny. Marb: Marbling is expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. (Difficult for us to compare unless you look at the percentage rank and remember that often US beef is corn fed, whereas Australian is often cereals or sorghum which can affect marbling). RE: Ribeye Area is expressed in square inches and is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Fat: Fat Thickness is expressed in inches and is a predictor of the differences in external fat thickness at the 12th rib (as measured between the 12th and 13th ribs) of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. These explanations have been simplified. For a more detailed explanation, go to the American Angus Association’s web site.
$Value Indexes $Value indexes are multi-trait selection indexes, expressed in dollars per head, to assist beef producers by adding simplicity to genetic selection decisions. The $Value is an estimate of how future progeny of each sire are expected to perform, on average, compared to progeny of other sires in the database if the sires were randomly mated to cows and if calves were exposed to the same environment $W: Weaned Calf Value, an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for preweaning merit. $W includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk and mature cow size. $F: Feedlot Value, an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning merit compared to progeny of other sires.
$G: Grid Value, an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for carcass grid merit compared to progeny of other sires. $QG: Quality Grade represents the quality grade segment of the economic advantage found in $G. $QG is intended for the specialized user wanting to place more emphasis on improving quality grade. The carcass marbling (Marb) EPD contributes to $QG. $YG: Yield Grade represents the yield grade segment of the economic advantage found in $G. $YG is intended for the specialized user wanting to place more emphasis on red meat yield. It provides a multi-trait approach to encompass ribeye, fat thickness and weight into an economic value for red meat yield. $B: Beef Value, an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires.
